Blaine-friendly Kurtbastian Fic Recs

Putting a list together for @fallevs, but I hope this will be useful for anyone who wants to dip their toes into Kurtbastian fanfiction but doesn't want to read anything anti-Blaine! Everything included in this list will either not include Blaine at all, or if he is in the fic, it will be neutral or friendly toward him.

I've tried to include a wide range of words counts as well, so that you can start with something short and sweet or dive into something big, whatever you feel like. If anyone else has some recommendations to add, please feel free to reblog this list and add more!

Europe Is Our Playground by @glitterdammerung - 53,430 words

Summary: Eight years and half the world away from home, a chance encounter in a Paris club leads Kurt and Sebastian - each running from the ghosts of their pasts - into the diversion of chasing each other across Europe.

Summary: “I need you to—” “I heard you the first time,” Kurt interrupts, putting his fork and knife down on his plate and pushing his half-finished pancakes aside. “What I meant was: what the hell?” He points towards the neglected pancakes, trying to stall in the face of Kurt’s reaction. “Are you sure you don’t wanna finish that first?” The look in Kurt's eyes tells him in no uncertain terms that no, he doesn't want to finish his pancakes, Jesus. And so Sebastian has no option but to take a deep breath in, exhale slowly through his mouth and just… get on with it, internally cringing at how unbelievably ridiculous it all sounds when he puts it in words, all out there for the world (and more importantly, Kurt fucking Hummel) to judge. It all boils down to: I fucked up and I'm too proud to deal with it the mature way.

Summary: An AU in which Kurt and Sebastian never met in high school. Instead, they meet at &brave--an up-and-coming online fashion company where Kurt is the new assistant slash blogger (one day he will figure out a better title), and Sebastian is the less than pleasant tech support guy. Kurt does his best to avoid Sebastian and his rude attitude at all possible costs, but it turns out that technology is not his friend. It also turns out that Sebastian might maybe possibly be (okay, probably is) more than just an annoying coworker.

Come On And Mess Me Up by @pouralittlewater - 215,339 words

Summary: “It’s like...When Harry Met Sally,” Santana told him. “No. That was me and Blaine.” “How? You literally got together in months. You and Sebastian have been skirting the issue for years. This whole “will they, won’t they” thing is getting old.” Or, when Sebastian enrolls in McKinley High and joins Glee right before the duet competition. What Kurt thinks could be the start to a great friendship in gay camaraderie quickly explodes in his face as he realizes being around Sebastian makes him want to set the other boy on fire. However, over time, that feeling dissipates. Even without the title of friendship, the two become ingrained in each other's lives in a way neither ever expected to.

Note from me: this fic is definitely not anti-Blaine, however it does heavily involve Blaine and he is Not having a good time, so I maybe wouldn't recommend it if you want to avoid him (and the other boys!) being sad.

A Change In The Weather by cacophonylights - 209,414 words

Summary: The summer before college Kurt is shocked when Sebastian comes to him with a timely offer he can’t refuse.  He’ll get something he needs to realize his dreams, but in return he has to play the role of Sebastian’s boyfriend for the summer.  Neither of them know just how much their worlds are about to change. For a GKM prompt.

Note from me: this fic COULD be considered anti-Blaine, but I don't personally consider it to be; it maybe doesn't paint him in the most positive light, but I think it's still neutral enough to be on this list, and it's essentially required reading at this point! Also, it is famously unfinished, but there are a couple fan sequels: ACITW AU by @lady-divine-writes A Drop In The Ocean by @daftydraw and jwmelmoth The ACITW link above is for livejournal, but you can also find the original fic on AO3 in two parts here and here.

Are they also throwing in Swedish sometimes? Because every so often - maybe it was only the once though - I’ll understand a word or phrase, and I don’t speak Finnish. I do speak Norwegian though, and Swedish is related to Norwegian but not Finnish, linguistically. I know in Finland you all learn both languages, don’t you? I saw a lot of signage was in Finnish first, then Swedish. And I swear in season one during an interrogation, Alex said “Jag har inte idée...”

Lol sorry in advance, but this reply is going to be sooo long.

The main characters speak the Finnish dialect of the Helsinki metropolitan area. Some slang words are influenced by Swedish, as they are also by English, but it would be hard for me to pick the dialogue apart since it’s years since I saw the first season and a couple months since I saw the second, so without specific references I just don’t remember. And it’s true that Finnish is part of a completely different language family (Finno-Ugric languages) that has nothing to do with Germanic languages, but because of the proximity and history we have with Sweden, borrowed words exist in our language. Finland was under Swedish rule for 700 years, during which time the official language was Swedish, and Finnish as a language was suppressed.

So because of this history, we have a Swedish Finnish minority (around 5% of our population speak this dialect of Swedish as their mother tongue) and Swedish is our second official language. All street signs, public announcements, basically everything official is both in Finnish and Swedish, the Finnish alphabet even has the letter å in it (we just call it the Swedish o) even though I don’t think a Finnish word exists with that letter.

You’re right in saying that you learn both languages in Finland, though really, the mother tongue for the majority (90%) is Finnish and depending on if they live in the few majority Swedish-speaking towns/cities, what kind of education or job they’ve gone for etc, they speak and understand a varying amount of Swedish, which is to say not much at all a lot of the time, so I would much contest that “all” of us know Swedish. In Finland you generally start learning English earlier than Swedish. In the school system at least the past 30 years, if you’re a Finnish kid and don’t go to high school, then you’ve studied Swedish for 3 years, and English for 6-9 years. And you can imagine the amount that this person will understand in Swedish from having taken 3 years of classes as a kid. When I was in high school, passing Swedish on the matriculation examination was mandatory, but after that it was ruled out, and for 10+ years you could pass high school without taking a test on Swedish. Now it’s been re-instated since the little Swedish Finnish party is in the coalition government, but it’s not a popular decision since a lot of Finns oppose “pakkoruotsi“ (mandatory Swedish).

In my case, I have studied Swedish for 6 years, and that’s 13 years ago. I only need it sporadically since the vast majority speak Finnish as their mother tongue, and when I say I have “needed“ it, I mean that a snobby Swedish Finn has, like maybe 5 times in total the past 13 years, been disgruntled that I haven’t prepared and studied in her minority mother tongue in my spare time just so that I could service her at the supermarket in her mother tongue that one time in two years that she wants to have service from me for two minutes. Lol. One of my friends has had customers shout at her etc. I speak little Swedish, but understand a lot more of it, and under pressure and ridicule I speak none. In higher education it is required a varying amount, and it opens a lot of doors that those who just speak Finnish and English don’t have. I would say that especially younger people know how to speak English worlds better than Swedish. You can probably see from this text that I’m also opposed to “pakkoruotsi“, even though I love languages and enjoyed learning Swedish. But it’s the whole entitlement that can come with it that I dislike. My Swedish Finnish friends never require me to speak to them in Swedish and they think people that do so are ridiculous. In my municipality, 2,7% of the people speak Swedish as their mother tongue, and it’s a bilingual municipality because of this. In reality though, the vast majority aren’t fluent in Swedish at all.

I don’t remember much about Alex’s character, but so, if he spoke a phrase of Swedish, maybe he was a Swedish Finn, or since he has a high standing in society he likely has a high education which often requires Swedish. Or I guess it’s possible he just has a general knowledge of Swedish from his school years, just as I have. It’s a complicated history that the two languages have together. And now, at the end of this essay, I’m sure you’re wishing you never asked lmao. But as they say, sådant är livet.

10 years ago, my brother and I finished our weekly viewing of American Idol. He was gonna go back into his room and play whatever video game was hot at the moment, but I asked him to stay and watch this new show with me. I said, “remember the video for Popular by Nada Surf back in the day? It’s like someone made a TV show based on that video.” And so we watched. I had just turned 29. I had been laid off months prior. I had recently been diagnosed with ibs and eating was painful. My car had just died and it would be 10 years before I got another one. I was in an interesting place in my life. And somehow, even though I was 11 years out of high school, this show got me. I was a Mickey Mouse Club stan growing up, something about teenagers singing cover tunes just does it for me. But the thing about Glee is that it’s about choosing your family, and that’s what I’d been doing for the (at the time) 11 years since my Mom passed.

I build my fandom family over the years. @sleepdeprivedmind and I go back to the TV Without pity forums in season 1. @glitterdammerung and Odd encouraged me to write fic back on Livejournal and I was amazed that fandom cool kids even wanted to talk to me. @starcitysirens @purplehairedwonder and @afortydegreeday my co-obnoxious Blaine stand and Blaindependence sisters helped me come up with some of my best ideas. @adampascalfan and @honeysucklepink are my very patient betas and my dear @korydweninterim, my tumblr wife. I got to see Darren live for the first time thanks to @afortydegreeday. When my sister needed money to make her teaching dream come true, fandom donated. I found my love of writing again. All because Ryan Murphy’s little show. I’m not around much, but I still love this fandom. And all the friends I’ve made, even if I haven’t mentioned you.
