glasgow will never be the same again
the first g2 stock trains were built in 1977, they entered service in 1980 and became a fundamental part of the city over the next 44 and a bit years. grew up going on those trains, comfy, loud, aging, characterfull, ionic.
but in december 2023 the first g3 stock entered service, and the old g2s started really showing their age and breaking down what felt like every few days.
then today was the very last day of service for the trains which defined the city, at least to me, but with virtually no fanfare
the city won't be the same again and the g2 stock will be missed
128 'Tony Curran' is at riverside, but and least most of the rest are getting scrapped
so in memory of the g2 trains 1977-2024

Is coma leamsa fuck mu dheidhinn "exploring new writing, performance, song, and contemporary approaches to Gaelic arts", san fharsaingeachd ach gu seachd àraid is e air a shanasachadh agus le fiosrachadh sa Bheurla a-mhàin. Cho sgìth de "choimhearsnachd na Gàidhlig ann an Glaschu"

So, in Scotland, usually if a place has both an English name and a Gaelic name, they're very similar - either an anglicisation of the Gaelic name or a gaelicisation of the English name, depending on which came first. Usually some slight discrepancy in pronunciation, but still very similar. Glaschu, Obar Dheathain, Inbhir Nis, Dùn Dè. Dùn Èideann is one of the relatively few that's actually a translation instead; both it and Edinburgh mean 'Fort of Eidyn' (and nobody really knows what 'Eidyn' means other than it's a very old Brittonic name for the general area).
Hop over the Irish Sea and a similar pattern applies to many settlements over there. Daire, Béal Feirste, Corcaigh, Gaillimh.
Then there's Dublin! Now, 'Dublin' is a perfectly serviceable Irish name in itself; comes from 'Dubh linn', 'black pool'. Except that the city's name in modern Irish is Baile Átha Cliath, which is completely and utterly different in both meaning ('town of the hurdled ford') and pronunciation.
I'm not really going anywhere with this. I just think it's interesting.

FREAGAIRT MISNEACHD AIR BILE NAN CÀNAN ALBANNACH
Tha Misneachd air freagairt mhionaideach a sgrìobhadh air Bile nan Cànanan Albannach a tha ro Chomataidh Foghlam, Cloinne agus Dhaoine Òga Pàrlamaid na h-Alba an-dràsta.
Tha sinn a’ fàilteachadh na bile san fharsaingeachd agus a’ creidsinn gur e ceum cudromach air adhart a th’ innte a thaobh stiùireadh nas làidire bhon riaghaltas air ro-innleachd poileasaidh nàiseanta na Gàidhlig, a’ neartachadh foghlam Gàidhlig, agus a’ cruthachadh chothroman ùra gus ceann a’ mhaide a chumail ris an riaghaltas, Bòrd na Gàidhlig agus ri buidhnean poblach eile.
Aig an aon àm dh’fhaodadh a’ bhile a bhith na bu làidire ann an cuid a dh’àiteachan. Bidh tòrr an crochadh air mar a bhios an riaghaltas a’ cleachdadh nan cumhachdan ùra a tha anns an lagh a thaobh fo-reachdas, riaghailtean agus ro-innleachdan reachdail, agus dè an ìre maoineachaidh a bhios ri fhaighinn airson diofar raointean san àm ri teachd. Tha Misneachd ag iarraidh air an Riaghaltas barrachd soilleireachd a thoirt seachad cho luath ’s a ghabhas air na gnothaichean seo.
’S e a’ phàirt as ùire den bhile Earrann 4 a tha a’ dèiligeadh ri ‘sgìrean cànain sònraichte’, a’ coileanadh gealladh an riaghaltais gus ‘Gàidhealtachdan’ oifigeil aithneachadh. B’ urrainn dha na sgìrean seo a bhith air an sònrachadh ann an sgìrean far a bheil sgilean Gàidhlig aig co-dhiù 20% den t-sluagh, far a bheil foghlam Gàidhlig no gnìomhachd Ghàidhlig eile stèidhichte, no far a bheil ceangal eachdraidheil no cultarail ris a’ Ghàidhlig. Tha e coltach, mar eisimpleir, gum b’ urrainn an dà chuid na h-Eileanan Siar agus Glaschu an inbhe seo fhaighinn.
Tha Misneachd a’ cur fàilte air an inbhe ùir seo a tha a’ daingneachadh a’ phrionnsabail gu bheil feumalachdan sònraichte aig diofar sgìrean, fhad ’s a thathar ag aithneachadh gur e cànan nàiseanta a th’ anns a’ Ghàidhlig aig an aon àm.
’S e an duilgheadas a th’ ann leis an earrainn seo nach eil e soilleir dè bhios an inbhe seo a’ ciallachadh no dè seòrsa ghoireasan, structaran-taic agus guth coimhearsnachd a bhiodh ann, nam biodh sìon, aig ìre nas ionadail na ìre na sgìre chomhairle.
Tha Misneachd air dreachd leasachaidh a sgrìobhadh gu chur an àite Earrann 4 sa bhile, stèidhichte air siostam nan sgìrean planaidh cànain ann an Èirinn fo Achd na Gaeltacht 2012. Bhiodh seo a’ sònrachadh aonadan cruinn-eòlach ionadail, anns na h-Eileanan Siar co-dhiù, a bhiodh co-shìnte ri uàrdaichean taghaidh na comhairle, agus bhiodh plana cànain coimhearsnachd, co-dhiù aon oifigear leasachaidh làn-ùine, agus buidseat ionadail anns gach sgìre. Tha sinne a’ moladh buidseat de co-dhiù £150,000 sa bhliadhna do gach sgìre, no £2.7 millean sa bhliadhna do dh’Alba air fad.
“’S e suim mhòr a th’ ann an taca ri na tha ga chosg air leasachadh coimhearsnachd Gàidhlig an-dràsta, ach meadhanach beag an taca ri buidseat na Gàidhlig uile gu lèir, gun luaidh air an sporan phoblach san fharsaingeachd,” thuirt an Dr Christopher Lewin, ball de Mhisneachd agus neach-acadaimigeach a chuidich gus freagairt na buidhne a sgrìobhadh, agus a tha a’ fuireach ann an sgìre Gaeltacht ann an Èirinn an-dràsta.
“Tha sinn ag aithneachadh gu bheil staing eaconamach ann, ach tha cosg ann gun a bhith a’ toirt airgid a-steach dha na coimhearsnachdan seo, agus tha luchd na Gàidhlig airidh agus feumach air tòrr a bharrachd taic.”
Fo na molaidhean againn, bhiodh e cuideachd mar dhleastanas air comhairlean sgìrean a shònrachadh far a bheil 20% den t-sluagh a’ bruidhinn na cànain, seach a bhith roghainneil, mar a tha e sa bhile an-dràsta.
Tha freagairt iomlan Misneachd ri leughadh an seo: https://rb.gy/6sykqd, agus tha sinn a’ brosnachadh an t-sluaigh gus an uiread freagairtean a chur a-steach ron cheann-latha, 8mh Màrt.
Tha pàipear rannsachaidh leis an Dr Lewin mu leasachadh cànain sa choimhearsnachd ann an Èirinn agus ann an Alba ri leughadh anns an iris Scottish Affairs. Tha tionndadh saor an asgaidh ri leughadh an seo. “Cha bhi cothrom mar seo ann a-rithist fad ùine mhòir, ma bhios gu bràth,” a thuirt an Dr Lewin. “Feumar a’ bhile seo a neartachadh uiread ’s a ghabhas, agus ìmpidh a chur air an riaghaltas maoineachadh iomchaidh a chur seachad.”

When London fell after the Great War, there were many mixed emotions in Scotland. Some cheered, and some cried. However the time the Scottish people were most fearful was during the coronation of King James III of Scotland.
James III, as by order of his German Overlords, created a government system based of a rigged parliament in Glasgow | Glaschu while he reigned in Edinburgh | Dùn Èideann. The reason he was feared was when he and his puppet government decided to follow the Welsh way of trying to abolish English in Scotland.
Many Scots, however, found a way around this and claimed they weren't speaking English, but actually, Scots, this would preserve English much better than it did in Wales as the government could no prosecute.
People in Scotland today travel a lot more than before the war. Most say it is because they want to travel, but in reality, they mostly want to flee to the United States.

Lean air na Sàmaich agus dùin FTMG ach do dhaoine a tha fuireachd ann an sgìrean Gàidhealach air neo an fheadhainn aig a bheil pàrantan no seann-phàrantan le Gàidhlig, seach "còir laghail" a chur air dòigh gu gach duine feadh na dùthcha, ann an suidheachadh le gainnead mòr thidsearan mar-thà. Chan eil FtmG ag obair - san amas a bhith a' toirt daoine gu bruidhinn gu nàdarra is iad a' tòiseachsdh às aonais na Gàidhlig - aig an ìre-sa, a chionn 's gu bheil e ro mhòr (air a' Ghalltachd) agus ro bheag (sna h-eileanan). Cha chuidich e idir a leudachadh nas motha air Ghalltachd as aonais atharraichean eile.
Agus dh'fhaodte gu bheil "coimhearsnachdan Gàidhlig air feadh na h-Alba", ach chan urrainn dhomh creidsinn gu bheil iad cho amaideach gun smaoinich iad gur e an AON RUD, leis an aon luach agus na h-aona fheumalachdan, a tha anns a' bhuidheann de charaidean a th' agams' ann an Glaschu agus teaghlaichean ann am Bòrnais no Tangasdal. Chan eil gòireachas nas motha na nàiseantachd na h-Alba ann a thaobh leasachadh na Gàidhlig

After David Mundell’s attempts to re-brand Scotland out of the Scottish Office, we speculated about what a further de-Scottishification process might look like – “Welcome to the Beautiful Beautiful Banks of Lake Lomond” – “Go in search of the Lake Ness Monster” – “read about the Massacre of the Valley of Coe” etc.
Thankfully Andy Arthur has produced this handy guide. A Monoglot’s Railway Map of Glasgow and West Scotland with no Gaelic, Celtic or other Foreign Mumbo Jumbo …
