Il est alimenté en partie par les précipitations provenant de la cordillère des Andes et par la fonte du glacier Viedma qui serpente au centre de l'image, d'une longueur de 35 km. C'est le mélange d'eaux de différentes origines qui lui donne cette couleur bleue particulière. Au-dessus du glacier, de longs nuages orographiques sont visibles, témoins de la déviation du fort vent d'Ouest par le relief.
