So the link above is my explanation of my own timeline that I thought up, to explain the evolution of The Social Experiments under the assumption that the side characters we see in our version have already gone through it before. But I realise that post is really really long, so here's the timeline just as it is, so more people can see it:
The "|" means space where a period of time could occur between two events.
EP2 Vinesauce is the Hero (protagonist). The key room is introduced for him, using his own keys.
EP2 Vinesauce completes the challenges up to the laser room. He is thrown by his teammates and successfully steals the diamond.
|
EP2 Slimecicle is the Hero. Time runs out, believes he's going to lose in Mousetrap and eats the piece.
EP2 Slimecicle becomes Patient Slime. Creates the Surgery Room challenge.
|
EP2 AustinShow is the Hero. Can't find the key in Patient Slime, fails the challenge. The audience is bored.
AustinShow becomes a side character in the Merry-Go-Round room.
| (short time skip)
Showfall Media changes the Puzzler's character to be less in control, making mistakes more. Fakes a script error to ensure protagonists find the key.
|
Niki's character swaps roles with AustinShow. She is no longer just a wife and mother.
|
EP1 Frank is the protagonist. Dies accidentally and is moved to supporting role.
EP1 Sneeg is the protagonist. Has chemistry with Frank and is moved to supporting role.
|
EP1 Ranboo is the protagonist. Advances beyond Episode 1 and does the show we know today.
Yep, so that's my timeline. My explanation is up there, it's a bit of a ramble because I was figuring it out as I went. And once again, if you have any suggested amendments, let me know! I'd love to work with someone on this.

i still think about vinny in genloss…
like everyone talks about how tragic niki’s death was, which is fair, but at least niki had more than five minutes of screen time. hell, vinny couldn’t even finish his speech on the carousel before he was cut off, and if i recall correctly, he was the only one that didn’t get to say his peace.
his lines were literally just his speech and then confidently saying he could make it in the laser room and… that was it. he was never mentioned again and the protagonists just moved on. even in death all he got was a throw away gag and an expression of disgust with an apology from The Hero. after that both Showfall and the audience let him fall into obscurity.
i still wonder if he volunteered because he truly thought he could’ve beaten it, or if he knew that the chances were not in favor of all three of them walking out alive and decided he would be the canon fodder that went first—that died first. but then again i suppose it doesn’t matter as he didn’t even have enough lines to establish a character motivation, much less why he volunteered himself to go first
(and also, what did his death look like uncensored? the laser room always stuck out to me as being odd; it definitely fits with the goofiness of The Puzzler’s other traps, but SFM always had something far more sinister waiting just beyond the veil… so what actually happened? were they just hiding how much carnage an anvil falling from that high would cause or was his death entirely different?)
i cant say i have watched his content [ironic, given the monologue that is this post, i know] but i’m interested to know what his audience thought of his appearance, the nuances i may have missed from not knowing him as a creator or a character before he died
#hell i don’t even know why he was given the title of The Hoarder#the only thing i saw was that it might’ve been because he’s a variety streamer#generation loss#genloss#gen loss#gl!vinny#generation loss vinny#vinny vinesauce#generation loss the social experiments#i’m a fake fan#i’m posting about how tragic his character is and i haven’t even watched his vlog

Sid's GenLoss thoughts, or, how Vinny is the key to all this
gif by hackerling
As I mentioned in my last post, I really don't know who anyone in GenLoss is outside of Jerma and Vinny. But I was immediately invested when I saw it was filled with lore.
I haven't seen too many people talk about gl!Vinny, so I figured I'd make my contribution by talking him in particular. (Spoilers, obviously.)
The carousel.
Vinny is an outlier in episode 2, both in his actions and how others react to him. We see this as soon as Ranboo first enters the carousel room. While there is urgency in Vinny's voice, he doesn't seem nearly as panicked as the others. Compare and contrast how everyone else acts while the carousel is turning:
To how Vinny acts:
For most of the carousel sequence, Vinny is quiet and distant. He doesn't address or even look at the camera when he passes by it on the carousel. The most we get after Ranboo first arrives is as he leaves, but in both instances Vinny's shouts are almost half-hearted.
Then there's his introduction.
youtube
The title on this clip upload is inaccurate. Unlike all the others, Vinny makes no attempt to beg for his life. He doesn't beg to be freed or try to escape. Vinny just tells us he's useful because he's a hoarder and spends the rest of the time listing the things he's hoarded. Even after becoming 'the taken', Sneeg still mentioned that looks forward to the chance of staying alive.
But Vinny doesn't do any of that, nor does he does it appear that he wants to. He just wants to talk about something else. Plug and plays. Wooden ducks. Anything other than surviving and escaping.
Vinny doesn't speak much while chat solves the pipe puzzle, but there is one thing he says that stands out: "I welcome death at this point."
Vinny's reaction to death, and the candy room.
As Vinny climbs out of the tunnel and stands up, he pauses and looks at Niki's body.
See clip here.
Although he's not as animated or dramatic as the others, Vinny is clearly shocked that she's dead. He questions why Ranboo and Sneeg are so focused on candy and Mouse Trap while Niki is dead on the floor. Of course, both Ranboo and Sneeg have been heavily brainwashed at this point, while Vinny likely hasn't. Curiously, after they brush off Niki's body, Vinny seems to brush it off too. While it may be that self-awareness only comes in bits and spirts, I think it's more likely (as we'll see later on) that Vinny was still aware and decided it was best to play along.
The other two moments in the candy room are interesting as well. Vinny takes Sneeg's suggestion and tastes a piece of candy, only to spit it out with disgust. "You're eating this stuff?" As others have pointed out, the candy is definitely not candy, but we don't know what it really is. All we know is that it didn't taste good.
And finally, Vinny makes one more comment before they leave the candy room: "What am I even doing in here?" To which, Ranboo can't give an answer.
From this point on, I'm going to skip ahead to Vinny's death and work my way backwards.
Reaction to Vinny's Death, and the laser room.
One of the few times we see Ranboo and Sneeg react to what's happening around them is moments before Vinny's dummy hits the ceiling.
It's curious that they have such a strong reaction. They did nothing as Niki screamed for help and let her die. When Ethan dies later on, they give no reaction. And Ranboo simply moves on when Austin and Sneeg are crushed to death.
But here they are, screaming at him hitting the ceiling. And when Vinny dies, they flinch at the sight. It was a subdued reaction, yes, but it was more than could be said for the others, except for maybe Slimetowel. Even afterwards, when they pass by Vinny's body, they're still uncomfortable by the sight.
Whatever really happened to Vinny was so shocking that pierced through all of their mind-control and scared them.
(By the way, this doesn't quite tie into the bigger theory I'm getting at here, I just thought it was interesting.)
"Goddamnit."
Out of all the on-screen deaths, Vinny is the calmest about his.
Niki cries after she's shot and completely breaks down before being shot again. Ethan screams at whatever it is that happened to him behind the fake wall. Austin and even Sneeg scream as they're crushed by the wall.
But Vinny? Sure, he does yell as he flies through the air and hits his head against the ceiling, but it hardly compares to the sheer horror the others experienced. When he realizes that he's about to die, all he does is lean his head back, says "Goddamnit", and lets the comically tiny anvil crush his head.
If anything, Ranboo and Sneeg have more of a reaction than Vinny does. Vinny is resigned and accepts his fate. Hell, he smiles just before they throw him. And those things he said before: "I welcome death at this point." "What am I even doing in here?"
How is Vinny so apathetic to what's happening without being forced to? Well…
"Guys, don't worry about it. I got this. I've done it before."
youtube
When presented with the laser room, Ranboo and Sneeg are at a loss (haha) on how to solve the puzzle. Vinny confidently tells them he's done it before. Ranboo tries to ask what he means by that, but Vinny doesn't elaborate and simply tells them that they need to throw him across the room. (I'll be fully honest, the reason I think that line is important and intentional is because it sounded like he was reciting a script word for word rather than him naturally speaking LOL)
He might be implying that this has happened during one of his funny stories like whatever happened at the wooden duck factory…but I think it's a lot more literal than that.
Repetition is a theme in GenLoss. In fact, it's what 'generation loss' means in the first place: repetition until degradation. Several people seem to have gone through trials before they happen, such as Slimesicle having a part of the Mouse Trap puzzle inside his 'slime.' And wait…didn't Slimesicle and Sneeg die on Day 1?
Everyone being held captive by Showfall has done this before. They've been trapped, put through puzzles, failed to escape, and died.
For whatever reason, Vinny remembers this. He knows the puzzles' solutions. He knows when he's not supposed to be on-screen. He knows that they've failed to escape before, and he's just biding his time until his next death.
But what if he's just being mind-controlled the way Sneeg is, you ask? He's not. Things aren't completely censored for him. He was shocked when he saw Niki dead. He found the not-candy to be revolting. He's still aware of the horrors going on around him. He's just desensitized because he's gone through it before, and he'll probably go through it again.
For a brief moment, however, something different happened. He got through the lasers farther than he ever has before. It's different than before. He smiles. "I made it!"
"Goddamnit."

The power outage is still going on, and I've got nothing else to do, so while my laptop's still running, I might as well do this! So here's stuff I thought of while thinking of things I was thinking about while watching Episode 2 of Generation Loss.
Oh how this series of posts has changed.
PART SEVEN: MY TIMELINE
As I think about it and develop the idea more, I've got this timeline in my head about the old runs of The Social Experiments. Once I copy paste this from Notepad to Tumblr, I'll try to remember to link the other post where I talk about how I imagine things to work, with characters replacing characters.
https://www.tumblr.com/subaerial-dweller/736053558324117504/aaaaaa-im-on-a-roll-now-im-just-spitting?source=share
So, the timeline of events. Skip to the bottom for the actual timeline, the rest will be explanation.
Let's focus first on Episode 1, Spirit of the Cabin. Because of the blackout, I can't pull up any screenshots or double check my evidence, so apologies for any inconsistencies or mistakes. My version of events goes like this, for anyone who hasn't read my other posts on the subject:
Frank, while alive, is put in the protagonist's position, before, when there's no secondary character. He acts alone, the hero against the villain, one on one. Until a freak accident that Showfall didn't intend, and he dies. They cover it up by putting him in the basement, saying he "lost", and bring in Sneeg as their next main character.
GL!Sneeg is the protagonist this time, and he messes up in the cooking challenge part of things, so he's also put in the basement with Frank. Maybe his other episodes, because he didn't get past Episode 1, are hanging out with Frank and trying to figure out a way to escape. But because Frank is a very fresh corpse, the audience sees him as just a very quiet guy who likes to sit down a lot. Sneeg does most of the entertaining for him. The audience loves this, and Showfall realises the secondary character is a brilliant idea. So they keep Sneeg in the basement with Frank (because where else would this guy go, he's dead), and bring in Ranboo as the next protagonist.
GL!Ranboo does their own thing and makes it past the cooking challenge, working with Sneeg as the secondary character to complete the other challenges. Frank remains there, but he's a rotting body now, so the filter thing plays it off as a joke that GL!Sneeg is buddies with a skeleton. And Ranboo goes through the motions of Episode 1 as we see it play out, and that's the end.
Three main characters. The evolution of the show, the introduction of the sidekick. We're doing great.
Now Episode 2 is where we introduce a lot more characters, and it gets really tricky. The order of events, I mean. So there's a lot of improvisation here.
The people we know for certain (or for pretty certain) who have been here before are GL!Vinesauce and Slimecicle. Vinesauce because he says something like "I've done this before" when asking Ranboo and Sneeg to throw him. Slimecicle because he ate the piece of Mousetrap after he thought he was going to lose.
The others, I'm pretty sure have done this before, but I can't prove it.
SO. I'm going to start with Slimecicle.
(For clarification, I'm calling him Patient Slime for his character in Episode 2 most of the time. In Episode 1 he's the Slime Demon, and in Episode 3 he's Charlie. I do deviate sometimes but that's my code generally.)
I think he was once the protagonist, and he was going through the motions. Once he got to the Candy Room, his slimy little fingers and the other teammates lack of dexterity failed them, and of their timer, they had maybe two minutes to go. So Slimecicle, the protagonist, he eats one of the pieces in a panic. The Puzzler comes in and goes "why the hell did you do that", and fails them. Maybe this means killing them, but the First Way, where the character's dead but not the actor. I also did a thing on that, so I'll link it here when I have power.
Showfall doesn't want to buy another Mousetrap set, so they cut into Slimecicle and get it out of him. But as they do, they think, wait, this is good. We could do this for a challenge. So they add a challenge, right between the key puzzle and the merry-go-round room, they add one where the person has to cut into Patient Slime and retrieve the Mousetrap piece.
Someone else comes through as another protagonist and cuts into Patient Slime, and Showfall Media put they key in there too. But the key is hard to find, because there's too much stuff there, and the audience starts to get bored with the protagonist just constantly pulling irrelevant stuff out of a cheery surfer dude patient. So for the next round, they fake a script error, and they remake the Puzzler to, instead of being a scary, intimidating ringmaster, to be slightly incompetent, which makes him still scary, because his fuck-ups mean he's not in control, but he's more likely to read the script as "IN him" instead of "ON him". They run it again and it works well. Maybe this is when Ranboo comes in.
So that's Slimecicle's story, I think. What about the others? I might have to split this one up, it's getting really long.
I believe the protagonist who comes through and struggles to find the key is GL!Austin. He's one of the players in this game, one of the recycled actors. Obviously it could be anyone, I have literally no proof here, but I'm gonna say it's him because he's the one who looks the most horrified in the merry-go-round room. I think there's something wrong with his filter, the thing that makes everyone else see everything Normal and Fine and Happy, but he's seeing everything either as it truly is, or he's seeing disorted images, or constant flashing between reality and fiction. He's the one who looks disgusted sitting next to Frank, a rotting corpse, he's the one who reacts the most when GL!Ethan dies tragically, something is WRONG with him. Story-wise, I think it would make sense for GL!Austin to always be the one who things go wrong for. There's always something to be amended with Austin, so that's why they changed the Patient Slime challenge, that's how Showfall's going to figure out how to make the mind control things stronger, the filter. They've got to get this guy in control. Even when he's shouting stuff about how he's got a wife, his story keeps getting changed, the name of his kids, how many wives he's got. There's something going on up there, a lack of clarity in his plotline that everyone else possesses.
Our other person of interest was Vinesauce. He's the only other one I have evidence to believe has been through the show before. But he doesn't really fit in with this whole Episode-2 thing we've got going on, the evolution of the Surgery Room. Slimecicle to AustinShow to Ranboo. He doesn't fit in there. So I'll put him before all of this, before the Surgery Room was even added to Episode 2. Maybe (and of all the maybes here, this is a big maybe) he was the one who they made the key challenge for, because of his trinket-hoarding thing. I don't know how it lines up other than the fact that GL!Vinesauce probably has a bunch of keys as a part of his collection. Maybe he was the one they stole all those keys from, and he correctly identified which one would get him out of there because he knew everything he hoarded really well.
So Vinesauce completes the key challenge and goes straight onto the merry-go-round room (carousel, for the Americans and other non-"merry-go-round"-ers). He chooses who will live and who will die. Blah blah blah. He moves onto the Mousetrap thing, does well at it, whatever. Goes onto the laser room, where he's tossed by his teammates and somehow manages to steal the diamond. This is why he thinks it'll work this time, when he asks GL!Ranboo and Sneeg to throw him. I don't think he remembers everything, but he just knows he did it before. Or maybe he does remember, but Showfall's stopping him from saying EVERYTHING, so he just says what he can, like "trust me, I've done this before".
So Vinesauce was before Slimecicle was ever the main character.
I don't know where else everyone would place. Who else have we got? Ethan and Niki we haven't covered, and Sneeg, I suppose.
Keep in mind, I don't know how long Showfall's been doing their thing for. I don't really want to bring Chronicle 0 into this, because everything "confirmed" about that is speculation, and I have no idea how it's linked, and time could work really weirdly. But if we take the dates from Chronicle 0, I think that's set in the 1990s, or very late 1980s (but that's more unlikely, I think it's the 1990s). The Social Experiments could be set in 2023, but again, we don't know. So that's 20-30 years Showfall Media could have been operating for (if they're the antagonist in Chronicle 0 too, we don't know), which means there could be a bunch of gaps between my order of events.
GL!Ethan and Niki could fit anywhere, or maybe they haven't taken their turn as the protagonists yet, and they're still stuck in supporting roles. I had an idea in a previous post that GL!Niki was once stuck in GL!Austin's role, being a wife and mother, but the increase in feminist interest in the show meant Showfall moved her out of that role because they wanted to be popular with the new age of gender equality. So she could have always been stuck in the supporting character role, because she's already had her big graduation from Wife and Mother to Nonwife Nonmother, and Showfall will only make another shift when they feel it's safe, when they see intense pressure of another wave of "make women better characters".
OK OK I think we finally got to the end. I'm going to write down my timeline, but I'll put a little "|" down where I feel there could be space between the events.
EP2 Vinesauce is the protagonist. The key room is introduced for him.
EP2 Vinesauce completes the challenges up to the laser room. He is thrown by his teammates and successfully steals the diamond.
|
EP2 Slimecicle is the protagonist. He is going to lose in Mousetrap and eats the piece.
EP2 Slimecicle becomes Patient Slime. Creates the Surgery Room challenge.
|
EP2 AustinShow is the protagonist. Can't find the key in Patient Slime. Fails.
AustinShow becomes a side character in the Merry-Go-Round room.
| (this time skip, probably not very long)
Showfall Media changes Jerma's character to be more bumbling, making mistakes.
|
|
|
OK how does that sound? It's a bit all over the place, I know, but I think I've included everything I wrote down in the explanation. Let me know if you have any thoughts, I'd really love some other input on this, and I'd be so happy to do a revised version with a collaborator. Thanks for reading this far!

Wish Vinny had a bigger role in Genloss for two reasons.
1. He’s my streamer. He’s literally the only one on the cast that I care enough about. Sure, I’m a huge Jerma fan, and his parts were very entertaining, as is to be expected of him, but I started watching Genloss for Vinny. I want more of him cuz I like him
2. If he had more of a role, more people would be talking about him and his character and I want to see discussion about him and his character but he barely did anything so there’s practically nothing :(

This is the final one of the night, I've decided it. Part four. OK! Here are my thoughts about Generation Loss characters, more specifically:
PART FOUR: CHARLIE SLIMECICLE
Charlie's a really cool character to think about, because he pops up in every single episode as a different character. Most of my other rants tonight have been theories, but this is more of a headcanon about how I believe Charlie came to be in Genloss and Showfall Media, but I'll be backing it up with evidence and things so don't worry about it.
Let's get cracking!
So the common belief, from what I've seen on Tumblr, is that we all seem to think that GL!Charlie grew up in that cabin from Episode 1, because it all looks very childish. Especially the bedroom. We've got a kid bed, a photo of Slimecicle as a child, the ducky thing on the desk, a small chair, a tennis racket, the whole thing. Anyway, so if Slimecicle was raised like that, damn. He lived his whole life to be that part, the Slime Demon. That's rough, Showfall Media. Even for you. Raising a kid for that?
My thought is, and this is where the heavy headcannoning comes in, so there will be little to no evidence from this point forward.
Have you ever read The Maze Runner? Spoilers up ahead if you haven't, so... yeah. In the prequel book, The Fever Code, the main bad guys (the morality surrounding them is complicated), WICKED, houses all these kids in a top secret facility to try to figure out a cure to the almighty plague thingy. These kids are all immune, except for some (*sobs*), and they're all special. And they form their own little bonds and it's all nice and sweet except for the unimaginable horror zombies and child experimentation.
ANYWAY.
That's what I'm imagining for Genloss. All these kids are in one facility, and they're being raised to be performers. I think GL!Charlie's one of these kids who lives in the dorms. But early on, I believe he was seen as a talented actor, so he was taken to live in his own little room, the cabin, so he could form an attachment to it. That's his main role, I believe, although he circles around in Episode 2 and 3 because Showfall thinks it's funny to see him there, but he's always the Slime Demon in Episode 1. And they raised him just for that, so that's why he has so many personal effects in his cabin, like the photo and the sports equipment. He even has his own portrait.
Anyway, I'm imagining him to still interact with the other kids, at lunchtime and break and stuff, when they're not working. I'd like to think that's how he meets other Main Cast, like Ranboo and Sneeg, as well as others like Niki, Austin, Frank (when he was still alive), Ethan, and Vinesauce. So he knows them as he's going into the show, but once they put him under, he forgets them and has no moral qualms about what he's doing.
Continuing with the Maze-Runner-ish thing (this isn't an AU I swear), I think he might've been given away by his parents at some point. Because has the photo, it could very well be a headshot, like actors put on their CV, or it could be a school photo from when he was actually outside. I saw exactly One Video about the book It Was Just Another Day In America by Ryan David Ginsberg (I'm going to read it when I have it), and the idea of selling your kids because you have no other choice is painful and dystopian and exactly what I think would happen in this Generation Loss world. The outside world, the audience (not us), is failing and collapsing but everybody is buying buying buying and everything is getting very very expensive so some people, if they want their kid to live, if they want to live themselves, well, there's no other choice. Showfall Media conveniently swoops in with an offer and pressures them til they can't say no, and takes their kid for a hefty sum and hopes the parents won't recognise them when they end up dying on live TV.
Does this happen for GL!Ranboo? I don't know. I like this idea of him meeting GL!Charlie and the others in the Showfall dorms, but I also like the idea of them just going missing one day, picked up off the streets and flung into this whole mess. I don't know if that was confirmed by the pre-release short videos they put out, I can't tell anything from those other than a sense of "oh fuck", but yeah. For Charlie, I like this headcanon.
Maze Runner style.
If I were to substitute characters out (I'm doing this for fun now, it isn't relevant to the headcanon), I'd do it like this:
Charlie Slimecicle - Thomas. He's kept apart from them, but he still sees them. He's an outsider and he's particularly special.
Sneegsnag - Alby. He's the leader of them, he's dry and bored. He's not as serious as Alby, but he seems the most confident, so he's the leader.
Ranboo - Newt? I think so. He seems pretty timid when I think of him, but they're rather chill and definitely aren't a pushover when it comes to interacting with the other characters. I think Newt works because they also would be the one to help out Charlie (Thomas) when he first comes down.
Frank could be anyone, really. I have no idea of his character. Minho is a very core character, obviously, and Frank could definitely fit that. Happy, upbeat, childish, a strong bond with Sneeg which would carry on even after he stops talking (whether from psychological damage or actual death, I dunno).
That's it for the night, folks! I'll be posting more of these. If you're sick of me, I'm sorry, it's just my random thoughts at this point.
