In your Giving Journal, make a list of the nonprofit organizations, charitable causes, or social issues that you support financially or are interested in supporting in the future. Next to each item on your list, write down the reasons you are motivated to support them, then reflect on the following questions:

When you look at the organizations, causes, and issues on your list, is your motivation for supporting them always clear to you?

Is there a pattern in your motivations?

Can you prioritize the list?

How do you think being aware of your personal motivations for giving will make you a more effective giver?

My current list:

Junior League of Kane and DuPage Counties, Inc. (JLKD)

College of DuPage Foundation

North Central College Foundation

American Cancer Association

Kiva

Movember

Yes, my motivation for each of these organizations is clear to me. I have a personal connection with each organization. The mission of JLKD is tied to supporting at-risk children through literacy efforts, developing the leadership potential of women, and promoting voluntarism. All three are important to me because I work in higher education and believe a strong foundation is the beginning to a life-long love of learning. I am specifically a leadership educator and advise and mentor young women every day. My leadership philosophy is grounded in the theory of servant-leadership so the promotion of voluntarism aligns with my personal beliefs. I am an alumni of both institutions listed. I lost my father to lung cancer when I was in my teens and honor his memory through donations. I support entrepreneurs primarily in South America (where my family is from) through Kiva. I support my husband's charitable efforts by giving to his Movember fundraiser every year. 

I have prioritized the list above. Being aware of personal motivations for giving really helps me in the decision-making process and ultimately a conscious decision-maker. I am not randomly giving at grocery store checkouts or when asked at a stoplight for donations. If I have spare change I am happy to give but what I consider my real giving or meaningful contributions are those that are given to the organizations on this list.
