Looks like Wangjue is back on the menu y'all! My 3 month wip is done at last and I can't believe how far it has come! Like I really sketched this out back in October and merged all the layers tonight. This took a long time due to the amount of characters I had to colour and my indecisiveness with how I'd colour them. In the end we got here and that's all that matters!
My love for Wangjue and @riikaa-chan is strong 💖💖💖💖 [ No matter what the future holds for AH LOL (✿´ ꒳ ` ) ] Please check out "Awakened Hearts" by Riaball on AO3 to really appreciate this moment! Hint: it's in ch 27.

RivaMika FanFic Rec List Part 1
Tumblr media
Hi friends!
I decided to make this rec list because I've been consuming so much RM fic lately that I've been having a hard time keep tracking of which ones I'm recommending. So, I decided to make this for my selfish reasons lol but I figured this would be good to share since it seems we have some more incoming RM fans our way.
We're currently at 916 RM fics as of today. When I first started reading about this wonderful duo, there were only about 600 or so and it just exploded over the past years. It's so awesome to see our little ship gain some headway.
As always, feel free to add in your own recs! This is merely a beginning list. The links to the fics are attached to the title. I'll include some ratings and brief summary. See the tags below for quick info:
Tags
+ = Completed work
- = WIP
* = nsfw
The Song Remains The Same by MoraLeeWright. Rated M, * and +. What can I say about this masterpiece that hasn't been said already? This is probably the best intro to rivamika that you can ask for. Really good rival to lovers done in a realistic manner. So damn good, you'll consume it in less than three days. Recommended to anyone who is a bit iffy about this pairing and needs some convincing. The smut is beautifully done too. Fantastic slow burn.
Just Until The Storm Has Gone by MoraLeeWright. Rated E, * and +. When I tell you I screamed at some of these scenes! A much more angsty composition to the post canon au fics out there, but done so well. You almost forget how much angst the characters feel when the sweetness of their actions outweigh them. Author is incredible and has more works, but these two are just *chefs kiss*.
Surviving Peace by die-forellex (heatinfreezing). Rated E, * and +. This fic was my first RM fic, and I'll never forget it. It's hot, sweet, and oddly comforting. There's a particular, ahem, mouth on private part scene that always me fan myself in chapter 2. The satisfaction you feel when these two are finally finally happy, it's so wholesome. Just mind the tags--ackerbaby and pregnancy is big in this one.
To you, five years from now by a_sassin. Rated E, * and +. A different take on a post war au that has Eren and Armin alive, trying to navigate their last years as Mikasa returns to them. Oh, and she's pining for a certain captain *grins gleefully*. This is angsty but not as heavy as you'd expect. Very spicy but sweet. Definitely give this a try.
The Sound of Lightning by LycheeGreenTea. Rated M, * and -. Ackerbabies? Ackerbaby. This cute but action packed WIP is such a worthy check out. There's something about Daddy!Levi and Mommy!Mikasa that eats at my rm heart. Another take on a post war au that leaves you wanting more. A spicy scene and some domestic fluff is all you need to want more from this author.
After The War by loneackerman (aka the wonderful @rivaille-13) Rated M, * and -. THIS STORY. Anyone who is reading this can attest to just how amazing the plot and development of these characters are. There's a delicious slow burn element to it, and it's recently been resolved...let me tell you, worth the wait. Author is almost done with the fic I believe, but please check this story out. It's one of the best post war canon healing au's out there.
Same Old Thing by Raewyll. Rated M, * and -. Did someone say underground adventure? This was one of the best stories I had the pleasure of following along for a while now. I think the author has one more chapter left over. This is great for those who want something kind of spicy but not too spicy. The tension, plot, and action are all still there though.
I am from a burning village by @valya-azucena. Rated M and -, possible *. There's so much I want to say about this fic but can't coherently describe how amazing it is. The tension and build up of these characters is so SO good, and I screamed at the last update. 10/10.
Inexorable by @alienheartattack. Rated T and +. Hello modern au! I devoured this fic during work shamelessly. It's short and sweet, and there's just something so hot about the secretary/boss trope that eats me up.
Paths in Constellations by LamentableBrat. Rated E, * and -. HOLY SMOKES. This fic has torn me apart, y'all. When I tell you I cried AND am hotly bothered, no one else can do this but this author. It's an incredible fic and am so excited to see where it goes.
Soldiers Don't Get Happy Endings by heretosayhello. Rated T and -. I had to do a double take when I saw this was rated T because holy heck, this author just writes the tension between them like no other. There's a lot of Ackertalk and new plot lines I'm incredibly jealous of that I didn't think of first. SO GOOD.
Deep Sea Running by @linaxlight (shameless self plug). Rated E, *, and +. Post canon AU of what happens when the old Levi squad comes back to Paradis Island. Everyone else seems to have moved on three years after the ending of the war, and they make their peace saying goodbye to Eren. But Mikasa chose to stay behind back then, and she'll need to face Levi eventually. Sequel has Ackerbabies because I love them.
That's all for now folks! I'll do a part 2 next time.

Hey, how u doing? I wanted to ask for you for indications on washette fanfics, what are the best that you have
p.s. and yes, I do want to hear as well about yours in that list as well, 'cause they're gold
Hey! I'm doing alright:) Thanks for asking! What about you? (is this the correct tumblr to anon etiquette?)
Oh goodness this is such a loaded question because the answer is many. I hope you're alright with a big list sorted by category <3
Fluff! Fluff!!
The French Mistake
One of the first washette fics I read, so it holds a special place in my heart. A little silly, a little lams, ultimately very cute and good time.
Under the Arches of Moonlight and Sky
Just very good, cute, soft weary bed sharing. (this is only wholesome, I swear)
Let's Dance
Short, sweet fic with dance instructor George and our beloved two left feet Laf:)
I Like You Better in Real Life
Did someone say Influencer/Youtuber!Laf and President!George?? No??! Well start and read this fic. Seriously, it's a longer one, and just really damn cute. A bit of slow burn in terms of internalized homophobia (done in a good way) and trans Laf?? Yes. It's really so good.
The Prince
Ok, ok, it's one of mine. The one chapter is deceiving, it's decently long and featuring Prince!Laf and Royal Knight!George!:) Also magic!! angst, fluff, denial of feelings but then of course love confessions;) after angst though, don't worry haha.
Fathoms and Foundlings
Ooooohh boy. This. This one. Mermaid Laf and regular ol George! So so so well written, I mean, the feelings, the war, the weather, literally everything you can name, it's spectacular in this fic. Be warned, it is incomplete, but I remember when the latest chapter was released when I lost all hope (plus the author is still active) so I definitely don't count this one out of being updated!:) But, I'll be honest, I'm unsure about it being finished BUT I still think you should 1000% read this because you really will not find something like it anywhere else and it's just so cute!! Did I mention fucking amazing?
Whom can we trust now?
Platonic washette!! Really well written and just altogether really well put together!:) comfort after Arnold's betrayal! Seriously, I highly recommend this fic it's just so perfect of their relationship and cuuute.
The Particulars of Language
Oh goodness. Oooh goodness. This is so so cute. A nice little blend of angst and fluff and did I mention internalized homophobia? (In a good way, if that makes sense) Also so well-written by an incredible author, I just- language confusion. Need I say more??
Marque
Ok, ok, it's been too long since I read this one, so I will say, it is very tentatively going in this category. I just love soulmate au washette! Angst! Kidnapping? ...no final chapter. So I'm not sure, it could've been planned on ending very happy and fluffy! I do believe overall, this leans on the darker side, but I know I really love this one and they love each other. I want more washette soulmate aus.
Breaks your heart, puts it back together
what's my name, what's my station
Oh God oh fuck it's this one. (said with love). Brutal? Hot? Expanding my vocabulary?? An incredibly beautiful use of metaphors??? Actually feel like crying when I read it. Yeah. This is amazing.
May the Melody Disarm Us
Oh Godd oh Fuck it's this one. (maybe I should change this section's title) this one isn't even angsty per se, it's just like...brutally beautiful. They love each so much but oh my god. The metaphors, the way the author sets the scene and environment and everything! Ugh. So so good.
Let Down My Guard
Oh dear lord in heaven above preserve me. I'm gonna be dramatic but there are simply not enough words in the universe I have that can describe how I feel about this fic and how damn incredible it is!! And boy do I mean it when I say this one breaks your heart and puts it back together. I have seriously never sobbed over any piece of fiction like I did this. Just ahhhh. The feelings they develop for each other, the confusion of cultures, the secrets revealed?? I didn't even tell you Laf is a mermaid yet. Just- please. Please read this. It will rip your heart out, but it will put it back together. But really, this is just a fucking masterpiece and so so beautiful.
Porn With Plot
that dress you like
Very nicely done smut + feels! (Did I mention how nicely it's all done?) Oh! Did I mention genderqueer Laf? Yes.
Mon General / My Marquis
Ok the only reason this is going in this category is because I find the others up there more heart-breaky than this one. I love this one!! The historical details! Their loving relationship!! Very very good and lovely. With some angst of course.
The Mistranslation
Oh God oh Fuck it's this one. (I'll be saying that a lot). Would you like all these categories put into one beautiful fic?? Here it is, here. It's incredible. Please read it. It's free serotonin. (Did I mention incredibly written??)
The Things I Would Do to You
Ahhh ok. So. Super duper sweet, lots of angst sprinkled throughout but Laf's visit to Mount Vernon + feels + (smut). Need I say more??! Seriously, this is wonderful.
Not So Easy to be the Teacher's Pet
Oh. Oh god it's this one. So this is borderline Oof (Laf is 17) but if that does not bother you, then you are in for a treat!(??) Ok but really, lots of feels, denial of feelings, way-too-sweet-for-his-own-good Lafayette and poor confused George. Just fantastic.
Devil to Pay
Hoooo boy. If you like pirates or sea adventures, (hot pirate captains. I'm just gonna say it) then I'm literally begging you to read this. Kidnapped noble Laf?? Slowly falling for the pirate captain Washington?? Not to mention so many maritime details and wonderful emotions, beautifully crafted just. Spectacular. Please, read it if you haven't. Even if pirates don't appeal to you, they will after this fic.
A secret weapon
Ahhhh!!! Thiiiiiis. Is everything. Ok, yes, it includes more than washette, but I mean come on, it's (sexy) demons. It's desperate Washington trying to win a war and fight his gay feelings (guess which fight he wins?) But also, super well written and detailed and feels!! I adore this fic, and the whole series is a treat. Go read it. It's wonderful, you won't regret it.
Oof (not in a good way)
The Sweet Enjoyment of Partaking
If the not-so-sweet side intrigues you more, this is one of the few washette fics that I do love and is...not so nice. It's really good as a not nice piece! Pretty straightforward and fucked up. Ya (I) love to see it.
Transmutation
Oooohhhhhh. This is a fic I didn't read for a while just because I didn't know what it was but boy let me tell you, it is soo good. I'll say it's not as oof as the fic above, but oooh maaaannnnn. I don't know how to describe it just, don't expect sweet things, but if darker takes are your thing please go read this. You will not regret it. It's so damn good.
OW
Day One Way, By Night Another
Ok ok here me out. This one might seem a bit random and it is. It's very short and for the longest time I didn't read it until I did and said ow because ow!!? I find this has the most impact going in unarmed so...watch out. (but like check it out. it's just so unique I really do love it)
Once More, With Feeling
Oh GOD. This one is quite brief and straightforward but if you are looking to rip your heart out with feels and angst then boy do I have the perfect fic for you. But seriously, it's so well-written and just expresses all the feelings so so perfectly. But at what cost? (Pls read it)
A Beautiful Tragedy
Hello darkness my old friend. Ok but seriously, this fic still remains so impactful in my own mind just as the writer. It's not a happy ending, but I try to leave you with hope. Pretty music that I highly recommend listening to, I don't know. I think it's really good, I don't say that often about my own stuff soo if you're ok with heavy amounts of angst and pretty aesthetics then check this ok!:) (but guard your heart, sorry not sorry<3)
Porn Without Plot
Betrayals and Allies
So, admittedly, this one very tentatively goes into this category because I find compared to the others, this one has less feels and less focus on it, but don't get me wrong this is very emotional!! It displays their relationship and love so cutely (and smutily..? new word) and as extra bonus it fills in the gaps of the deleted scene from Turn. You know the one;) It's very good!!
Cold Nights
Look at me adding another of my own. This is super duper short, but I kinda like how the emotions turned out. I think this was the beginning of my first dive into my current style of writing so that's cool I guess? But yeah no, it's porn without plot lol.
What Good is Honor When You're Starving?
Oh dear, another of mine in this category. I barely put this here, but the main focus is on the smut, but there are many many feels aplenty. Oh wait, did I mention vampire Laf? George definitely not falling in love... but really, I like how this one turned out!:) Good sexy vampire times (with feelings)
Ah wow! You stuck with me! Thank you! I...tried to keep it brief. This is not an exhaustive list by any means btw, there were a few (many) I decided to cut because I wanted this list to be all encompassing of many authors, styles, etc.
But anon, thank you for the ask and giving me the chance to rant about my favorite fics! My apologies on taking so long to finish, I hope you can understand my life has been a little hectic, but I always try to make time for washette;)
Thank you!!<3

some of my ao3 wolfstar recommendations!
i have been reading so much on archive of our own recently, so i thought i’d share a few of my absolute favorites!
also this is only wolfstar rn because i’m obsessed, and most of them are 18+, so, just a warning.
also, if you’re not on ao3, please do yourself the favor and check it out. it’s so amazing and has so much to offer. i have an account that I hope to start posting on over there, right here, so feel free to keep up with me over there!
(and yes, this post IS an open invitation to message me to talk about any of these fics or just wolfstar in general because I need someone to talk about these fics with)
the works are linked, as well as the authors’ accounts. go and show them some love!
The Barista, the Burglar, and the Sofa by SeasOfTrees: Genuinely one of my favorite fics I’ve ever read. The writing is so dry and witty and so absolutely Remus-like, I couldn’t get enough of it. Part of me wished it was an actual series just so I could never stop reading it, but it’s still perfect as a one off.
All The Young Dudes by MsKingBean89: This fic RUINED ME. I am going to be completely honest and say that I haven’t been able to bring myself to finish it just because of the PAIN it caused me. If you told me this was a published piece of work and all the Harry Potter books were just fanfictions based on All The Young Dudes, I would believe you with no question. I have come so close to printing and paying for this fic to be bound into a physical copy just because it is so worth it.
Text Talk by merlywhirls: I found this fic one night after crying my body weight in tears because of All The Young Dudes, and I’ve always found texting fics to be fun and lighthearted and just an all around easy read. Remus is a kid with a chronic illness and Sirius is a wholesome pansexual who loves Remus more than anything. Truly adorable. :)
Solntse by lumosinlove (@lumosinlove on tumblr): Oh my god. Okay. So, I’ve never been one for super creative au’s, but this converted me. The idea of Russian!Sirius and a Callboy!Remus makes me melt. In most wolfstar fics, writers use Sirius’ and Remus’ trauma to give them issues in communication, and its done wonderfully, but this fic gives an entire new version of that. The language barrier acts as such a creative hurdle for them to get over, and I loved it so, so, so, much. Also, have google translate ready if you want some extra heart wrenching action. Also, I am in love with @lumosinlove and everything they make <3
Meet You At The Bottom by Remy_Writes5: This made me obsessed with Uncle!Sirius somehow even more than I already was. Also, porn with plot, basically (my kryptonite).
Sweater Weather by lumosinlove: OH MY GOD!!! This fic had me going through a roller coaster of emotions. Once again, never been one for creative au’s, but THIS. This absolutely beautiful piece of artwork had me hooked from the very beginning. The writing is beautiful, the idea is so well executed, and the characterizations are so amazing. It also has a spin off based on some of the original characters, and they are so adorable! Basically, just read everything lumosinlove has ever written, please and thank you.
Casting Moonshadows by Moonsign: Okay, so, I have yet to read this one, but from what heard, it’s like All The Young Dudes but with a different characterization of Remus...? I wanted to give it a try, and I’m adding it here because other people have recommended it to me.
The Kitchens by lumosinlove: Yes, another lumosinlove. I can’t help it. This fic is so beautiful. It has no hesitation in blatantly showing both Sirius’ and Remus’ flaws, while also being so adorable that it hurts. I’m a sucker for royal au’s and this did not let me down.
The Annunciation by bigblackdog: This fic!!! I have little to no knowledge of catholic history, but this fic made me want to. Sirius and Remus are monks set in the Italian renaissance, forbidden love, of course, and the storytelling is so captivating and descriptive. I may not have understood 50% of the religious references, but I sure did enjoy the wolfstar in it.
Dress up in You by MsKingBean89: The ever so talented author, MsKingBean89, my lord and saviour, blessed us with this amazing non-magical, modern, wolfstar, Remus is poor and in a band, Sirius is hot and a hairdresser, masterpiece. Adorable Jilly content in this. It says its incomplete, and usually, that puts me off, but the way this ended is completely fine with me and a genuinely happy ending.
---------
okay! so, there are some of my favorite wolfstar archive of our own fics. i beg you all to read them, just so I can have someone to talk about them with. i also beg you to create an ao3 account, just because it truly is so amazing. i also may or may not be posting my wolfstar greek island au fic over there relatively soon :0 okay love u guys I hope you enjoyed let me know if you want more compiled lists of my fav fics bc I am more than willing to share.

55 Hobbies for Women to Relax and Enjoy Life
There might be affiliate links on this page, which means we get a small commission of anything you buy. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. Please do your own research before making any online purchase.
Are you a career woman who’s burned out on her job?
Or do you simply want to add an enjoyable activity to your life?
Maybe you’re a mom looking for some new ways to relax while having fun.
If your answer to any of these is yes, then you are on the right page. This article will give you a list of 56 hobbies for women who simply want to relax and rest for a while.
Enjoying fun and exciting hobbies is a great way to increase happiness. Furthermore, hobbies can be good ways to achieve your highest potential.
In a fast-changing world where many women equal men in terms of career and growth, you need to find a hobby that can give you the work-life balance you deserve.
So…let’s get to it!
Arts & Crafts
1. Drawing
Explore your artistic side by learning how to draw. Drawing brings a lot of benefits besides simply boosting your creativity. It can improve your memory, enhance your body coordination, and develop your emotional intelligence.
But more importantly, drawing serves as an outlet for you to express your feelings. When you feel stressed or burned out, sketching or doodling about anything (even abstract) can make you feel relaxed.
If you are wondering how to start drawing, here’s a list of methods you can begin with.
2. Painting
Painting is one of the most relaxing hobbies to pursue in the field of arts and crafts. You can either paint the traditional way or engage in the “paint by number” trend. Aside from making you feel stress-free, painting also gives you a sense of fulfillment whenever you finish a piece.
You don’t have to be an artist to paint. All you need is a brush, a surface, a palette, and a coloring medium. To know more about how to start painting, we suggest reading this article by Artists Network.
3. Singing
Maybe you’re not into drawing or painting, but you have a wonderful voice that everybody loves to hear. Did you know that by singing, you can improve your mood in the blink of an eye?
Indeed, studies show that singing stimulates the release of endorphins and oxytocin in your body. Endorphin is the hormone associated with pleasure, while oxytocin is the hormone that alleviates stress and anxiety.
4. Dancing
Experts believe that dancing is a good stress-relieving hobby because it requires the movement of your body. Through this movement, endorphins are released and you start to feel happy.
But in addition to this physiological explanation, Psychology Today reports that dancing reduces anxiety through our interaction with music. On a psychological level, dancing to the rhythm of the music brings a satisfactory feeling.
Do you think you can dance? Make it your talent, and not just a hobby. Check out this post to find out more about how to start being a dancer.
5. Writing
Are you fond of poems, novels, and short stories? If so, then why not create your own masterpiece?
Writing as a form of art is one of the best ways to express your feelings. If you can’t say what you want, then put it down on paper. This will not just improve your mood, but also give you a sense of satisfaction when you finish a piece.
We know that there are tons of ideas playing in your mind that need to be released, if you want to share your thoughts and stories with others here are the steps you need to follow to become a published author.
6. Acting
Maybe you wanted to become an actress when you were a little younger, but you had other responsibilities to pursue. Well, that doesn’t mean you need to give up on your dream of playing a role.
Many groups out there do acting for fun, while some do it for money. Whatever your reason is for starting the hobby, find a group to join. In addition to the fun and potential profit, your confidence will surely improve too.
If you’re still hesitant, here’s a list of the benefits of acting from LifeHack that you can check out.
7. Scrapbooking
This is probably one of the best hobbies out there for moms at home. If you are the type of person who loves collecting or taking pictures of life events, then you need to put those memories into something more organized and physical—a scrapbook.
But don’t be deceived—this hobby isn’t just for moms. Whatever you do in life and whoever you are as a person, scrapbooking can be for everybody. You just need to fire up that artistic side (plus collect some scrapbooking materials) and you’re good to go.
8. Journaling
Journaling is a good way to channel your emotions into words. It doesn’t matter if you are not a natural-born writer—in your journal, you can say what you want to say and be who you want to be.
Many people are currently fond of bullet journaling—a method of organizing and keeping track of your to-do list every single day. There’s no particular format on how to do it, it all just depends on your personal needs (and how you want to style it).
9. Blogging
Since you are already writing and journaling, it wouldn’t hurt to share your thoughts and musings with the world. Start a blog and be serious about it. Schedule your writing and posting days so you can properly maintain it.
Who knows, you might even earn money through blogging. Most famous bloggers you may have encountered while browsing the Internet started blogging as a hobby.
If you are curious about what makes a blog good, you can check out this article for reference. If you are a beginner, however, you may want to check this one out first.
10. Coloring
Ever heard of the “adult coloring” trend? It’s a lot like the “paint by number” craze that many adults are talking about.
There’s nothing really new to it—it’s just the same old coloring you did when you were a kid. Perhaps the only difference is that, now that you are an adult, your life is a bit more stressful and you need an outlet.
A lot of bookstores and office supply shops sell therapeutic coloring books. If you don’t believe that these books will work, give them a try and prove yourself wrong.
11. Photography
Taking pictures can be a good hobby whether you are serious about it or not. They say that photographers see the world with a different view, so you might want to try and check if this is true.
Once you see the beauty of the world through your camera lens, you will learn to appreciate life even more. This is the key to a stress-free living–the ability to see the joys despite all the challenges you may encounter.
More information about photography for beginners can be found here.
12. Videography
If you’ve tried photography and you’re looking for more, videography can be a great next step. There are a lot of things you can do with a cam recorder.
You can create your own short films and then produce longer ones. You can also mix this hobby with blogging and become a YouTube vlogger. All you need is a good camera and a great mind (which we are sure you have).
13. Discovering New Music
When you were in middle school, you probably felt like music was your best friend. Now that you are an adult, you may still feel that music is a comfort.
Music has been a savior for many people. It keeps us sane and helps us relax—especially our old favorites. But you may also enjoy discovering new songs you’ve never heard before. Explore a genre that you kind of hated back in high school. You might be surprised to find many great songs you never knew existed
14. Playing an Instrument
People who can play instruments are often very attractive to us. Moreover, they always seem to be happy and stress-free.
Wouldn’t it be nice to learn to play an instrument? Your instrument doesn’t have to be extravagant and difficult—what matters most is that you’re determined to learn how to play it.
There are a lot of YouTube tutorials on the Internet that you can watch to start this hobby. You can even find blogs and websites that teach music.
If you want a more personal approach, you can look for a mentor to teach you how to play.
15. Origami
It may seem silly, and you might think that it’s only for kids, but origami is actually for everyone. In fact, origami is a recommended activity for adults and seniors.
This is because origami helps with various mental health concerns, such as focus and concentration, memory retention, and brain relaxation.
Here’s a beginner’s guide on how to start the art of origami.
16. Making Candles
Making candles is a craft that people who love decorating might enjoy. There are tons of craft stores (both online and offline) out there where you can purchase the basic essentials for it.
Aside from the fact that decorating can make you feel relaxed, you can also create as many candles as you want to give your home a joyful vibe.
To learn more about making candles and how to start this hobby, here’s a list of steps from The Spruce Crafts.
17. Making Jewelry
If you’re fond of jewelry, you can engage in jewelry making as a hobby. Many people have gone on to turn this hobby into a business.

Here is a cheat sheet you can check out if you want to start this particular activity.
18. Embroidery
The art of embroidery may sound like a 1950s Jane Austen novel, but believe us, it’s still popular among women today. There are even embroidery groups out there that do it as a team.
This is another hobby you can turn into a business once you get the hang of it. You only need the basic essentials and the determination to make it work.
For more information about how to start this skill, check this post from The Spruce Crafts.
19. Calligraphy

For more information about this type of handwritten art, check out this post from Lindsey Bugbee.
20. Cosplay
Maybe you’re more into designing extravagant clothes and props, or you loved dressing up as your favorite character when you were a kid. If so, you can try cosplay!
Cosplays are fun events where you can really express yourself and share your talent. There are often local events in your area where you can meet fellow cosplayers.
21. Digital Illustration
If you are more of a techy person who loves design, then digital illustration might be the hobby for you. Create works of art from the comfort of your laptop. Who knows, you might even decide to do digital illustration as a full-time job!
Udemy offers a course on digital illustration. There is a fee, but the results are worth every single penny.
Entertainment & Fun22. Reading
Reading stimulates your brain function. Aside from improving focus and enhancing your writing skills, it also strengthens problem-solving and analytical thinking skills. What is better than relaxing while improving your mental function?
To make it a hobby, always bring a book with you wherever you go. You can read a page or two during work breaks or when you simply feel like you need some diversion. Better yet, practice reading 30 minutes every day to develop the habit.
23. Documentaries
Isn’t it fun to learn new things? Documentaries are very informative. They help you understand the things around you by explaining the world.
You can find a lot of documentaries on television and the Internet. Instead of binge-watching movies or series on Netflix and YouTube, check out the documentaries that are also available there.
24. Television Series
If you get tired of documentaries, you can always go back to watching your favorite television series (but don’t overdo it). Watching your favorite actor or actress and getting excited about what the next episode will bring can help you relax quickly.
25. Stand-Up Comedy
There are two things you can do when it comes to comedy: Be the audience and have a night of fun, or be the comedian and be the source of fun.
Stand-up comedy is an entertainment style where comedians perform in front of a live crowd and deliver jokes. If you have tons of bright (and silly) ideas in your mind that you know will surely make people laugh, give this hobby a try.
There are likely several bars and comedy clubs in your local area where amateur stand-up comedy nights are held. Or, if you just want to be in the audience and have a good laugh, you can always check Netflix.
[As people say, “laughter is the best medicine”> If you want to get some of this medicine from the comfort of your own home check out some of the most popular funny podcasts.]
26. Video Games
Studies show that video games are good sources of stress relief, as they allow you to escape reality for a while. This is often deemed a hobby for men, but there’s actually a growing community of female gamers out there too.
You’re old enough to know how to limit yourself when it comes to video games, so making it a hobby can’t hurt. You are an adult and know how to set boundaries.
There is a massive list of video and mobile games available on the web. If you’re looking for the best one that suits your personality, the Internet is just a click away.
27. Puzzles
Whether jigsaw or crossword, puzzles are great stress-relievers. Contrary to public belief, they are not just for kids and the elderly. They are also for adults who find mind games really interesting.
Like painting and drawing, finishing a puzzle gives you a sense of accomplishment. They make you feel like you have done something productive and worthwhile.
If you are looking for good crossword puzzles to purchase, there are tons of sets available on Amazon and other online stores.
28. Cards
Are you alone, but still want to play cards? Try the game called solitaire! And if your friends are coming and you want something to do together, you can always play poker!
Cards are good stimulators of the mind. They keep your brain active and thinking, and they can be a great stress-reliever, too.
29. Board Games
Just like cards, board games are a fun way to spend time with your friends. They don’t just provide entertainment—they also keep your mind healthy and active.

31. Collecting
This hobby can be a bit of a paradox—it can either be super expensive or super cheap. It really depends on your interest. Do you like antiques and vintage? Action figures? Shells? Anything goes!
Start collecting what best suits your tastes, and see how relaxing it can be to display all of your items on a shelf.
32. New Language
Just like learning how to play an instrument, this hobby is for those who have plenty of time. You don’t have to become an “expert” in that new language, but it’s just so fulfilling to know that you can survive if ever you visit a country where it is spoken.
As with all new technologies, apps are now a great tool for learning a new language. For many language apps, you don’t have to pay expensive fees, and you can progress through the lessons at your own pace. Check out the 7 best language learning apps.
Home & Indoor Hobbies33. Cooking
Some people think that cooking is purely a chore. But with the right approach, it can actually be a good hobby. Just imagine how it would feel to be able to do something really well that others can’t!
Learning how to cook can uplift not just your mood, but your confidence as well. Plus, you get to enjoy delicious meals you prepared with your loved ones.
Avoid fast food and take-out, and start cooking your own meals. Here’s an article from Medium that may help you start this habit.
34. Garnishing
Since you’re already learning how to cook, why not learn the art of garnishing as well? Garnishing is the process of styling food to make it look presentable. Won’t it be more fun if your food looks like it’s being served at a five-star restaurant?
For more information about how to garnish food, here’s a post from WikiHow.
35. Gardening
Some of us are blessed with what they call a “green thumb.” When you have a green thumb, you are a natural plant lover and gardener.
But who said only those with green thumbs can garden? Whatever the color of your thumb, you can still learn this hobby. However, you must have the determination and will to love nature so you can be a successful.
Curious about how to start a garden? Here’s a list of steps from Common Sense Home.

To start this hobby, check out this Udemy course by Hiromi Nagaoka about flower arrangement.
37. Sewing
Learning the art of sewing serves two purposes: You get to be creative in making your own clothing, and you don’t have to go to a shop to get your clothes repaired.
Sewing can help you channel your inner creativity into something that is practical. All you need is a sewing machine and a sewing kit.
If you want to start this hobby but don’t have any idea how, you can check out this Udemy course by Margaret Smith.
38. Interior Design
Tired of your home’s old design? Try your hand at interior design, and redesign your home like a boss!
When you’re done redesigning your home, you’ll be surprised how relaxing it can be to see your comfort zone in a fresh state. Who knows—your friends might even ask you to style their homes too.
If you want to practice your interior designing skills, there are tons of apps available on the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. We recommend checking out Planner 5D.

If you don’t know how to start knitting, there are thousands of instructions and tutorials available on the Internet. Here’s one example from WikiHow.
41. Pet Care
Maybe you are a dog lover or a cat person, or maybe you like birds or fish. Whatever animal it is that makes you happy, get one and start taking care of it!
This particular hobby is most recommended for those who live a busy life alone. Having another living thing in your house makes everything less stressful.
If you want to care for a pet but are afraid of having to leave your pet at home when you go to work, you can volunteer at the nearest pet shop in your area during weekends to be a pet parent.
Sports & Other Outdoor Activities
42. Running
In addition to making you physically fit, running can also be a great source of stress relief, as it is an aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercises initiate the release of endorphins, which are the hormones that reduce stress and anxiety.
Plus, with running, you get the chance to take your mind off your daily stressors. You become so focused on your goal that you forget about your worries for a while.
For more information about how to start a running regime, check out this post.
43. Hiking
Hiking is a great hobby for several reasons. For one, it can take up all of your attention, so you get the chance to relax and forget your problems for a few hours.

The physical practice of yoga has been shown to refresh and replenish you physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. It relaxes your mind and body so you can face the day head-on.

If you are looking for a beginner’s guide to meditation, here’s an article you may want to check out.
50. Camping

Here’s a good read from Skilled Survival about the essentials of camping.
51. Visiting Museums
When is the last time you simply stared at a painting and appreciate the artist’s skill and dedication to finishing it?
If you’ve never spent time immersed in art and information, you might not know how relaxing it can be. Visit a museum in your local area and explore the world of paintings, sculpture, history, and more.
If you’d like, you may also get a guide who can explain each display you’re interested in.
52. Stargazing
You can do this hobby anywhere, as long as you have a clear night sky with the stars shining bright.
Go for a drive away from home every once in a while. Take a friend or a special someone with you, find an open field, and lie down a blanket. All that’s left to do is relish the peace and quiet, and the incredible view.
53. Wine Tasting
If you want a more sophisticated hobby, you might try wine tasting. Look for local wine stores that offer wine tasting sessions, or ask your friends to buy different kinds of wine that you can try in the comfort of your home.
54. Travel
You might be worried that traveling can be expensive, but the truth is, you shouldn’t be. Ever heard of traveling on a budget?

If you are passionate about poems and performing, you can try this hobby and test your limits. You can practice delivering a poem, a story, or even a speech.
Interested in starting this hobby? Check out the local cafes in your area, as many host spoken word events. You may also check the schedule at Button Poetry.
56. Volunteer
If you want your time to be well spent on valuable things, volunteering might be the best hobby. Volunteering gives you a sense of self-fulfillment and belongingness. It makes you feel like you are part of something good and worthwhile.
To start this hobby, go to your local community center and check the classified ads. Organizers often post jobs or activities that need volunteers.
If you want a regular volunteering gig, the Internet is a good place to look for groups that dedicate their time to helping people.
Final Thoughts on Hobbies for Women
We hope that this list will help you find the hobby that best suits your tastes and personality—one that can make you feel relaxed and happy.
Remember that hobbies are supposed to be fun and stress-free. You don’t want to choose something that will just add stress to your life. Choose something enjoyable, and get busy relaxing!

WITHOUT FURTHER ADO, HERE ARE JUNE’S ANGEL FISH AWARDS!
Tumblr media
Nonimated by @thegirlwhorunswithwinchesters
I Thought You Were Going To Die (oneshot) by @fun-and-fandoms
My nominations for the month wouldn’t be complete without a little bit of angst. Though this one isn’t just that. If you’re easily triggered by mentions of depression and its symptoms, this one’s not for you. But it’s an important topic and I will always encourage any creator who uses their art to remind people it’s okay to talk about it. (Note from Kale, this was actually submitted in May but I missed it.)
More to Me (oneshot) by @becs-bunker
No spoilers, but I’m so glad this ended the way it did. So sweet <3
Help  (oneshot) by @blushingjared
I came across this fic and was immediately intrigued. Then I started reading and I was captivated from the first sentence until the very last. The author did such a good job with setting the scene and painting the right picture.
Talking Bodies (oneshot) by @ne-gans
This AU-Sam is such a huge weakness of mine. That, in combination with this dangerously filthy masterpiece, is nothing short of perfection.
Nominated by @focusonspn
Into The Woods (series) by @amanda-teaches
So well written, interesting plot and great development. The chemistry between Y/N and Dean is also amazing, and I loved how this mini-series could be so easily part of the show. Totally worth reading.
Nominated by @thoughtslikeamindfield
Stranger Than FanFiction (series) by @cherry3point14
The premise is similar to the film Stranger Than Fiction – a story about a story being written about you – and it’s just as hilarious. Also, Cherry Pie is still one of the funniest writers in this corner of SPN fandom.
“You’re not supposed to move your head if there’s someone trying to murder you, probably…”
No, I wouldn’t think so, but lollllll
“You’re being insane, out loud.”
Omgggg
“It tried, oh, how the door tried to divert her attention from the unknown men who could be terrible, rule-breaking influences on her. However the door was only wood and she was a stubborn woman made of free will and limbs—a woman who refused to be deceived.”
“Your hand is on the doorknob before the mention of your limbs has finished rattling around your head.  Realistically you don’t want to encourage the voice by doing what it says. After all, the voice’s ultimate goal seems to be killing you.”
BAHAHAHAH omfg you guys
I need to stop quoting from this bc I probably seem insane to those of you who haven’t read this, so stop being judgy buttheads and go read!
Nominated by @flamencodiva
The Choice (series) by @superfanficnatural
A couple of things. 1) this is an amazing fic that highlights Dean unwillingness to let himself go until it’s almost too late. and 2) the smut in this is hot hot hot hot! not for anyone under 18 years of age.
Mert has a way with words and can literally pluck you into one and make you see it as it comes to life in your head.

Lulu has an abundance of different stories she tells and this one is my favorite of her ABO’s at the moment. (although I love all of them) I think this one deserved a mention. I am glad she joined to Pond so I could help nominate and spread her amazing work!
One Night at a Time (series) by @crashdevlin

What He Lost (oneshot) by @jensengirl83
This short story by Brandy is sure to rip your heart out. she leaves just a bit of hope where you think there is a chance only to crush it completely with the ending. This one is sure to bring you to tears if you are looking for the most delicious angsty story to read.
Nominated by @risingpheonix761
Down The Rabbit Hole (oneshot) by @dontshootmespence
So, this was hysterical. XD I love crack fics, and bad smut in particular, and this one hits the spot. (I’ve also learned several new horrible euphemisms lol). The ending, though? Golden!

Poison (oneshot) by @supernatural-jackles
YES omg i feel this on such a level. I’ve gone through that shit myself. A friend who lets you down so profoundly but then acts as if you’re the most toxic person in the world.  Nothing feels as good as letting go of that shit and moving on to better things. This was beautiful, and perfect, and TRUTH.

If Dawn doesn’t continue this, I’ll riot.
Stuck On You (oneshot) by @kittenofdoomage
I rarely read a fic this long (I just don’t usually have the time) but it looked too interesting for me to scroll past, and it had me completely captivated. I needed to know what would happen as if I needed air, even though I could guess how it ended, I needed to read the words. Phenomenal.
Tumblr media
Thank you all for the awesome work and great feedback!
These are not actual awards! This system is set up so everyone in the pond has a chance to share the love and promote a fic/author that has grabbed your attention. The more people that participate, and the more everyone remembers to submit their own fics after posting, the better this will be :D
THANK YOU ALL AGAIN, KEEP UP THE AMAZING WORK, AND AS ALWAYS, HAPPY WRITING!

Frey’s fic recs list!
I realised there’s a dry spell happening in my fic reccommendations tag (”can i interest you in this masterpiece”, perhaps with a question mark at the end idk anymore), and we’re off season, so appreciating the writers creating content now is very important, so here’s a very incomplete list of season 12 (with a smidge of CDR) fics I’m obsessed with.
It’s absolutely not all the fics I would happily rant about to everyone who listened - it’s very on top of my head - but almost all authors I mentioned have more RPDR works, so check that out and browse the tags of ships you’re interested in (that’s how I found a big part of those gems). Oh, and comment, even if it’s just keysmash or screaming. It means the world, trust me on that.
“we didn’t start the fire” by @pink-grapefruit-cafe - lesbian AU, multichap, in progress (Jankie, Ninex, Trixya + I’m hoping for Kamasia)
When I think of this story, I start smiling and bounce with excitement, because it’s just that freaking fantastic. I’m still in awe with how well Charl is executing this concept, and I stopped expecting anything less than splendind from her even before I got to know her. How does she know so much about firefighters? I’m guessing a lot of detailed research came into outlining this story and I have the most respect for that. But the plot! Okay, so it’s a firefighter AU. I can’t tell you too much not to spoil anything important, but it starts with a bang to your own head, and then it doesn’t slow down. We get to explore characters one by one, but through the lense of relationships and dynamic, and it’s done in such a smart way. I promise you’ll be hooked one paragraph in, and by the end of the first chapter- you’ll be addicted.
“A Goode Idea“ by @goodemornting - lesbian AU, one shot (Crygi)
I had and incredible pleasure of betaing it, but I’m not biased at all what I say this fic is hilarious. It’s fantastically written and had me surprised at every turn. I had the most fun reading it each time. The idea is, well, absurd. Like, literally. Crystal gets her hand stuck in a vending machine on her way to a blind date. But our girl is not a quitter, oh no, but the machine is runway commentary on Drag Race and Crystal’s hand is jokes about Michelle’s breasts. Just... can’t let it go. Thankfully, there comes salvation in a form of Gigi Goode, who’s been stood up on a blind date. Are you, like, connecting the dots here? Because they’re not. At all. This fic is prime entertainment, give it a read.
“I Remember“ by @imposterzoe - one shot (Jiji)
MY HEART WAS RIPPED OUT, SET ON FIRE, AND STEPPED ON, BUT NOT IN ATTEMPT TO PUT OUT THE FLAME. I thought about this fic and, jesus, it still hurts. It’s a great angst, truly a great one. It’s all loneliness and heartbreak and yearning that makes the lungs burn. “dear god he needed a hug. But the one person he would accept it from was in another man's arms, on the other side of the country.” - I can’t get this line out of my head and I don’t regret it - it’s a very good one, but it just hurts a lot. Incredible, incredible work.
One Direction (to your heart) by @opalescent-cheetah - lesbian AU, multichap, in progress (Jaida/Crystal)
Back to the fun stuff! IT’S A SOULMATES AU. I’M WEAK FOR SOULMATES AUs. And you might not understand my love for that trope (it’s legit my favourite one ever), but you will understand my love for that story as soon as you start it. It’s a fun spin on the soulmate tottoos trope - you’re not born with it, but once you get your first tattoo, it’s mirrored on your soulmate’s skin. And Jaida really doesn’t get the appeal of having the universe decide for you about who you’re going to love - she prefers to make that decision for herself, so when arabic letters spelling “One Direction” appear on her chest, it’s less than ideal. But she doesn’t think too much about it. That, or the fact her new coworker insists of blasting 1D songs all day long. She might not enjoy Crystal’s taste in music, but she sure enjoys her company. A lot. A whole lot.
I almost forgot to mention it, but the fact each chapter has a seperate illustration drawn for it? And they’re all so pretty? Wonderful.
Signed, Sealed, Delivered by @missjanjie - lesbian AU, multichap, in progress (Sportsdoll, Crygi)
I promised myself one rec for one author and with Joley it was the most difficult to stick to that rule (and we’ve had Charlotte on this list, and I’m whipped with everything she writes, so visualise the struggle here). But I chose this one, because it’s just!!! so good!!! Jan is a simple collage student with typical collage student problems. You know, exams, boring readings, pining for your French pen pal, morning lectures, handing in assignments on time. Crystal is her roommate, and has typical roommate problems: sharing chores, remembering which sweets are whose, and telling your secret crush you have to pretend to be in love, because your roommate decided to invite her French pen pal to your wedding, so now you have to stage everything. That’s a normal Tuesday evening for them. And an awesome story for you to follow.
“small wonder“ by wildewoman_22 - lesbian AU, one shot (Jankie)
This list is supposed to be fics that live rent-free in my head, so this one should have been put as the first one. It made me sob. It’s so unimaginably beautiful (I’m already getting tears in my eyes and I’m not even talking about the plot, oh my god). Jackie and Jan decide to have a baby, and it’s the most raw, magnificent, but also heartwarming portrayal of pregnancy and different ways to understand motherhood I’ve read. So absolutely beautiful and filled with love. Just, a masterpiece. So mindblowing.
“Some Things Are Bound To Be” by @dollalpaca - lesbian AU, multichap, in progress (Kyara)
In Polish we have that saying, “to approach something like dog would a hedgehog”, and to say that was me with that fic is like not saying anything. I love Zyanny and I’m always going to be proud of the things she creates - be it a fic, a moodboard, or a bullet journal - but I didn’t really watch CDR, and the bit I have seen didn’t convince me. So it took me a while to get to that fic. But when I did. Jesus, the only advantage of catching up on it late was the fact I didn’t have to wait for updates, because it’s so good I’d go crazy, like I am now. Kyne is an accountant in a big company, all she wants is to do her job and mind her own business. Really. Give her her papers and peace. That’s all she’s asking for. So of course she’ll get something else - a rumour she’s dating the daughter of the company’s boss. But Kiara is hot and nice and seeing her laugh makes Kyne’s heart do stupid things, so what the hell. One thing she doesn’t know is Kiara’s past, and that might complicate a few things. I don’t know Kiara’s past either and Zyan won’t tell me and I’m going crazy here. Come join me in my misery - the way her characters are written makes it all worth it.
“countless chances” by @essenceofhall - lesbian AU, one shot (Crygi)
IT’S A HARLEY QUINN/POISON IVY AU, PEOPLE. And it’s blowing my mind. The characterisation in that fic is immaculate - it’s like original personalities of Ivy and Harley were mixed with something very, very original, and it’s owned - done so surely and with so much craftmanship - they feel organic as Crystal and Gigi. This fic is the best way of creating an AU based on existing characters I’ve read, and with a lot of certainty I can say that it will remain as the best one. It’s pure brilliance. I am blown away. Impressed beyond the point of expression.
“Blue Neighborhood” by @imalwaysaslutfordrag - lesbian AU, a series of astounding one shots, in progress
I won’t write too much about this, because I probably could whip out a separate post about BN and it would be just as long. It’s one of the best stories I’ve read in my entire life, and I don’t mean just fics, I mean all literature. Every aspect I could talk about is entrancing. Phenomenal work that deserves all the praise.

jonsa fic recs
alright, i’ve had a couple requests for recs, so here is my list. these are all fairly recent fics, all written this year i think. all of them are from my bookmarks on ao3, but i picked the recent ones which are my god-tier recs, my oh-my-god-i-love-this-so-much-i-think-i’m-going-to-die, the ones i reread. they have very little in common, but if you don’t find anything on here that tickles your fancy, then feel free to check out my bookmarks. i have just over 100 on there, and every single one on there are fics that i think are absolutely phenomenal.
for @abi117 @why-cant-i-be-careless and @orangeflavoryawp
canon divergent
Victory by moutainsbeyondmountains. one-shot, 5489k.
“You won already, Your Grace,” Tyrion said mournfully. “Enjoy your victory. There are no lands left to conquer. And there are no more dragons.”
if you read no other fic on this list, read this one. seriously. it’s d.ny pov, and glorious. genuinely, i couldn’t give this high enough praise. i reread this A LOT. like, a lot a lot. i could probably quote this fic.
I Want Something so Impure by @asilentfrenzy. one-shot, 10166k.
“You have caused this, you and your queen. You allowed her to speak to me that way, allowed her to order my obedience in my own home as if I’m to be her new dog to train. I am the Lady of Winterfell, and your inbred aunt has no right to-”
“Aye, you are the Lady of Winterfell,” he growled, his eyes flashing with an added flame of fury at the mention of the woman’s newly found relations to him. “The same Lady of Winterfell who not too long ago advised me to be smart, yet it seems that you can’t follow your own advice.”
“Be smart,” she repeated, filling her face with a look of mocking humor. “By kneeling? By allowing her to seize my title and command my people? Perhaps I should offer her these chambers as well. Better, I’ll just offer them to you again, seeing as I’m sure you’ll be sharing a bed. Shall I fuck her as well? As I want to be just as smart as you, Jon.”
so if you couldn’t tell from the summary, this one is sassy af. it features darkish/dominant!jon, which is my jam, and is pretty much just 10k of smut, which is also my jam.
it’s a small crime, and i’ve got no excuse by mxash. 5/5, 8214k.
“did you see her?” sansa snarled, a hand come to pull at his collar, pulling his mouth down only hairs from her own. “your targaryen queen has dressed as though she was a whore to catch your eye.” jon smirked as she bit his lip. what was this? dany had almost recoiled in her disgust and shock, but she hadn’t been able to pull herself away from the horrific sight. my lover and his own sister.
this one serves some dark!jonsa realness, and it deserves more comments/kudos. it is written entirely in lowercase, but don’t let that distract you. the characters are dark, and devoted, and who doesn’t love d.ny catching jon and sansa fucking? seriously, this one is a must-read.
Dark in Bloom by @orangeflavoryawp. oneshot, 8304k.
"His gravity wavers, the axis of his world tilted to the measure of her lips." - Jon and Sansa. The stain of desire bleeds slowly between them.
yeah orange, i’m reccing one of your own fics to you. seriously though, this is just like ... mindblowing. i cannot overstate how much i love this one. i literally will just randomly remember it sometimes, when i’m just going about my daily business, and i’m like “shit, that fic by orange was a masterpiece. love it.” so, yeah, if that doesn’t tell you how much i love it, then idk what will.
what i’m asking by @amymel86. oneshot, 1173k.
"I'm not here to talk about that," Theon says, setting off another, thankfully smaller coughing fit. "I'm here to talk about Sansa."
Jon can feel the blood drain from his face. "Is she ill?"
Theon shakes his head, lifting his eyes to Jon as he coughs into his fist. "No," he finally says, his lungs giving him a small reprieve. "The Queen is in her prime. Which is why you are needed."
okay, ya’ll obvi know of amy. she writes so much fantastic fic. but i feel like this one kind of flew under the radar? which is a CRIME tbh. this fic was so ... it was so heartbreaking, but in the best way. it’s not that divergent from canon, bc the main thing that is truly different is that theon lives. seriously love this fic.
A Toss of the Coin by Paige242. one-shot, 3793.
Years after the war, the Queen in the North and the pardoned Queenslayer welcome their first child. Old traits emerge, and Jon worries about this Dragon in a den of Wolves.
ok, so this is a future fic where jon and sansa married. i don’t even know how to describe this one. it isn’t jonsa focused, but that doesn’t make it any less brilliant. it is so unique, and i’m yet to read another fic that explores the idea of one of jonsa’s kids inheriting some targaryen madness. there IS a part two, which was just as amazing. pls do yourself a favour and read this!
Choose by @esther-dot. oneshot, 5630k
“I know the cost of our loves. I know too well how they fall on the scale, one outweighing the other. I know what you tried to tell me. I know.” She was looking at him now, and he was afraid, but he would say the words that he had been unable to silence. “I never had the chance to choose you, but I would. I would choose you every time.”
THE DIALOGUE IN THIS IS INCREDIBLE. i just reread this to try and find my fave quote, but i actually can’t even pick. there are just so many amazing conversations, between sansa and jon, sansa and d.ny, arya and jon .. ugh, the list goes on. love this, please read.
Wink Wink, Nudge Nudge by alltheshinywords. one-shot, 3187k.
Post 8x03, slightly AU. Tormund and Jaime inexplicably find themselves becoming matchmakers when they notice a certain chemistry between Jon Snow and Sansa Stark. Extreme fluff and silliness.
this one is the least angsty on the list, and honestly it’s just such a good time. i remember reading this while s8 was airing, and honestly it was just so light hearted that i laughed out loud several times, despite being heartbroken over what happening in the show.
canon, but alternative universe
leave behind a love story by aetherae. one-shot, 9562k.
Maybe if things had been different, they wouldn't be like this. They would be worse.
ok, so, despite the summary, i naively went into this expecting a happy ending. yeah, so, no. however, this was one of the most interesting fics i’ve read in a while, because each universe it explored was so different to the ones i usually see floating around. and the writing was SUPERB.
i fell in love with a war (and nobody told me it ended) by mountainsbeyondmountains. one-shot, 18752k.
In which the North and the South have been at war for years, and Sansa unexpectedly finds herself on the run with a certain Targaryen bastard.
this is an avatar/bender au, and it is GLORIOUS. after i read this, i promptly devoured every other fic this author has written bc i loved it so much. the bending is just a backdrop to the amazing enemies-lovers this fic delivers.
modern au
Fuel and Fire by @zarahjoyce. currently 4608k, 4/?, WIP.
"You see?" Sansa says, smiling now. "If you really have to have a room far away from me, seems like you need to move into a different hotel." As an afterthought she adds, "Or to another planet."
"Bet you'd just love that, wouldn't you?" Jon asks her.
"Loads," she snarls.
He takes a deep breath, all the while just looking at her.
Truth be told Jon will give anything in the world to be able to just-- just--
-
Jon and Sansa, and all the tropes applicable to them.
All. The. Tropes.
ok so zarah in general writes AMAZING fic, they’re always so creative and inventive and i’m always genuinely shook by the fic they write. but like, this one is the god tier one BC TROPES.
when we kiss: mmmm, fire by @dancemajicdance. 8/8, 39705k.
Sansa might be seeing someone casually, but thanks to Arya, Robb, and Theon, it’s Jon who’s got the inside track on how to get Sansa to take him seriously.
aka: the one where jon finds out that sansa has a daddy kink, and he uses it to seduce her away from the dating scene and into his arms, heeeey-oh!
yes yes, it’s a daddy kink fic, and it’s fucking glorious alright. if that’s not your thing though (even though i’m pretty sure this fic is EVERYONE’S thing) then please, for the love of god, check out the rest of their stuff on ao3. you won’t regret it. even though they don’t write much jonsa anymore, the prolific contributions they HAVE made will go down in history as some of the best jonsa ever written imo.
As Long As We're Going Down by @alienor-woods. 9/12, currently 42228k, WIP.
Four years after Stannis Baratheon wins the Battle of the Blackwater, Sansa Stark finds herself summoned back to King's Landing to serve as a bridesmaid at Crown Princess Shireen's wedding. When King Stannis tries to marry Sansa off to his illegitimate nephew, Edric, she thinks quick and tells him she's already married--
--to her bodyguard, Jon Snow.
i actually don’t know how to explain how much i love this. it’s written so beautifully, and it’s so realistic and just ugh. read it. the adaption to modern royalty is the best i’ve ever read, and the characters are very raw, and very realistic. (also, yes, the characters have gotten together at this point in the story, in case you were scared of committing to a wip without the satisfaction of some hot and heavy scenes).

Five Top 4's
I was asked by a friend to share some of my favorite media, so this post is a list of my personal favorite Books, Video Games, Board Games, Movies, and etc. Perhaps this will give you some insight into my creative tendencies, or perhaps it will just be a good opportunity for you to comment and agree/disagree/discuss with me!
Originally this was going to be a top 5 list, but I found myself with 4 obvious answers, and struggling to name a fifth in each category. So I just made it top 4—if it didn’t come to mind immediately, then it doesn’t really deserve that recognition, after all. Without further ado, here goes!
Top 4 Books
Rumo & His Miraculous Adventures - I love all of Walter Moers’ books, and if you haven’t read this author’s work before, you’re really missing out. The Zamonia series builds a wonderland-like world where whimsical species live in harmony with one another.
Good to Great - My favorite business manual. Good to Great showcases what specific elements of leadership, discipline, focus, and culture contribute to success. It’s something I’ve worked tirelessly to replicate in the offices of Level 99 Games.
The Meditations of Marcus Aurelius - One of the most influential philosophy books for me, the Meditations is a classic that instructs the reader in a calm, measured approach to life and its challenges. Much of the book deals with overcoming fear and the internal challenges that are formative to us all in growing up.
Blazing Aces: A Fistful of Family Card Games - Perhaps the best game-related book I own. Reiner Knizia turns a standard deck of playing cards on its head and uses it to play 15 stunningly original games, all based around the evaluation of Poker hands. If you want to see a real master of the game design genre at work, this is the book to get.
Top 4 Board Games
Libertalia - This game is an incredible feat of design, and it combines the simultaneous selection of games like BattleCON and Exceed with a clean resolution system and mechanics that make it appropriate for up to 6 players. The style of the game is excellent, and the mechanics lead to interesting, loaded choices every single turn. This is one game I always want to show my friends, and its something that I would recommend to players of any skill level.
Magical Athlete - Magical Athlete is not at all what we would define as a “modern” game. However, I never fail to have fun with friends when I pull this out and bring it to the table. I keep a copy in the office to remind myself that it’s important not to get too caught up on high-concept mechanics and high-budget art—all this is merely in service to fun, which can be achieved just as easily with simple mechanics and whimsical gameplay.
Dominion - Dominion is one of the most influential board games on my own personal style, and is the game that, to me, signals the temporal and stylistic break between the classic hobby games and modern ones. The incredible amount of modular content generated by shifting setups inspired the many variables present in games like BattleCON and Exceed.
Unlock Adventures - Evocative and interesting without being overwrought, Space Cowboy’s Unlock Adventure series is just the right size for a game you can only play once. I’ve got the whole collection, and eagerly watch for any new ones that drop. I love playing these with my wife and with friends, and they take only a few minutes to teach with the built-in tutorial.
Top 4 Music Artists
Scooter - Spotify tells me that Scooter is my most-listened-to artist of 2019, and a few past years to. I really enjoy the personality and character of these tracks—a Scooter album is always a bit more than an ordinary techno/trance album.
Masterplan - Classic Power Metal. I enjoy their work just a little bit better than Symphony X, Jag Panzer, and Helloween. The characters presented in the songs are a bit more interesting, and songs have a kind of progression of story that you don’t see in a lot of other outfits.
Avantasia - I’m a huge fan of Tobias Sammet’s Edguy, which is more of a traditional Power Metal outfit. Avantasia’s tunes are more orchestral and fall squarely into the Fantasy Metal genre. I love the long epics such as “Raven Child” and “The Scarecrow.”
Electric Six - Electric Six is somewhere between comedy and irony. I enjoy the catchy lyrics and tunes, with some tracks being quite nuanced, others being pure nonsense, and some simply self-aware schlock peddled for laughs.
Top 4 Video Games
Legend of Mana - A game that I’ve idolized since I first played it nearly two decades ago. There’s so much happening in this game, and so many different systems—magic, crafting, golem making, farming, music—that all feel like they fit seamlessly into the universe. On top of that, I love the world with its fantastic races. Far more than a typical “fantasy world” with a bunch of human-like peoples, Legend of Mana presents a wonderland of mythological creatures, animated objects, and talking animals as its cast.
Crono Trigger - While many games have come after it, Crono Trigger still holds a special place. It takes an incredible feat of writing to make such a well-interlaced and cohesive series of parallel worlds. I still hum the tunes from its soundtrack to this day, and the game’s most memorable moments have inspired hundreds of later games. I also enjoyed Crono Cross. I don’t care what you think.
Atelier Escha & Logy: Alchemists of the Dusk Sky - I’ve played a large number of the games in the Atelier series. I love the aesthetics of it, and I really enjoy the puzzle of making items. I’m one of those people who plays an MMO just for the gathering and crafting systems. If you’re anything like me, you’ll likely enjoy this series. Escha & Logy has a great balance of combat and crafting, and is an excellent entry point to the series.
Danganronpa - Say what you like about it, this dark, closed-room mystery series defines the visual novel genre for me. Danganronpa’s cast and situations are wild, but it really draws you in. It has a great pacing and character development that will make you love or hate every member of the cast individually, and the mysteries always take a surprising turn.
Top 4 Movies
The Lighthouse - My favorite film of 2019. Masterful film work and character acting make this CGI-free Black & White picture a modern masterpiece of suspenseful storytelling. The Lighthouse establishes Robert Eggers as the true modern successor to Hitchcock.
Wild Tales - It’s impossible to sum up this movie in just a short paragraph, so go watch it instead. This is a vignette film about revenge and human emotion, and the lengths we will go to settle the score against perceived injustice. It’s also just fun.
The Rocketeer - Between a beautiful soundtrack, high adventure in the early age of aviation, and memorable villains, there’s a lot to love in this classic. Even more than Indiana Jones, I consider this to be the quintessential pulp-action film.
Tampopo - A classic Japanese film that remains interesting time and again. Like Wild Tales, this is a vignette film consisting of several interlaced stories about our relationship with food and with each other, all tied together by a central thread.
Anyway, there’s my list! If you have checked out any of my favorites, or if you check them out due to reading about them on this list, please leave a comment and let me know! I’m curious to hear your opinions as well!

Doomed & Stoned in Iran with Roaring Empyrean
~By Billy Goate~
Tumblr media
It's fair to say that much of our view of the world is muddled by a cloud of politics, whether that comes from the strong opinions of family and friends, the news media, or our elected officials. When I heard such casual joking of bombing Iran during the 2008 US presidential elections, I cringed. Now more than 10 years later, the bluster of obstinate world leaders looms large once again, posturing with the weird flex of war. What most people are missing is real perspective on the people of Iran and, I would argue, the music of that country.
Hell, I was woefully uninformed myself, so when I started noticing more and more offerings from the heavy music community out of Tehran, I struck up a friendship with one doomedshinobi on Instagram, mastermind of the one-man band Roaring Empyrean, "a musical project aiming to create atmospheres where feelings in contrast meet, in a combination of funeral doom metal and New Age." Intrigued, I asked doomedshinobi for an interview and we exchanged words over oceans and breached the cultural divide for one of the more fascinating discussions about the joys and trials of being an artist I've encountered since starting Doomed & Stoned.
When I found doom, I was like someone who had reached his destination after a long journey.
Tumblr media
What's it like being a heavy musician in Iran? Most of us have no clue about what's acceptable and not in the culture there.
When you are dealing with a radical ideological regime, you can't reason with them. All kinds of art are seen forbidden here, unless they preach Islam or government ideologies. Things get worse when you are dealing with some art that is Western in nature. Metal is, in nature, Western. And even there, it had its problems sometimes from church and common beliefs. Here, it doesn't matter what you make and what you sing. As long as you are metal, you are seen as Satanic!
I remember reading an article in some magazine about Metallica being black metal, just because they have an album called Black. The author claimed, "They are black metal artists and black metal is Satanic, so they are making music to take away our people from God and Path of Light." I remember reading somewhere that even Pink Floyd was labeled Satanic. So things are hard for you if you are an extreme musician, like metal. You are alone in the scene here. Producers and labels mostly refuse to work with you. Stores won't sell your physical releases and stages to perform are hard to get. There have been many cases when a band got a show and then right before the show or even in the middle of performance, it was forced to be canceled. Many musicians even get arrested afterwards.
In Iran, metalheads find interest more in death and black metal, as well as power and symphonic.
Now imagine you are a musician, a metal musician, a darker and extremer type of metal musician. You are mostly alone on your own to make your own studio, produce your music and release it. This leads to many Iranian bands using free social media to share their music and send the word mouth by mouth. Platforms like Bandcamp, Soundcloud, and YouTube are blocked by the regime and someone like myself has to bypass filters in various ways to get access to these platforms. Due to the poor economy and fall of Iran Rial value, getting a full set of proper equipment costs a fortune. Many young musicians leave all they have to pursue musicianship.
The good thing, though, is people. They are welcoming metal and heavier musical styles more and more with each passing day -- especially the younger generation. But as is all over the world, heavy and extreme metal styles have less fans than most other genres. And if you are to be a heavy style musician, you have to accept this. You either want to pursue money and fame or do what you like for its own sake. There you have something like pop and hip-hop, and doom metal is scarce.
Monuments (Remastered) by Roaring Empyrean
What are you thoughts about the band Confess being imprisoned recently?
Confess is just one example known to the rest of the world of a band that has been imprisoned. I didn't know of them until I read that article, but the things that happened to them are not something new or uncommon among artists of all kinds, and it clearly is unfair. This happens in the extreme to artists pursuing foreign styles of art.
There are some charges that each time they face an opposing idea, they declare it upon the person. Like speech against Islam, against supreme leadership, and against national security! And these charges bring high punishments. I don't want to talk politics and stuff, as I am in Iran. I just wish every artist freedom to express their minds and souls, which is hard to come by. Years of prison for some art is what only a stone age ideology can decide is fair!
Song of the Seas (EP) by Roaring Empyrean
How did you first get into the darker, more expressive side of music? For example, what records have been most influential to you? When did you first start playing an instrument?
This is the most interesting question so far. As a child, I remember my father starting the day with some Pink Floyd, continue it with Metallica, sometimes going softer to Eagles or Eloy. This made me to not get into mainstream pop media even at an early age. He also listened to a lot of Kitaro and Enigma back then. And I got some Vangelis compilation from my uncle. Before 10, I was listening to rock and new age more than anything else, but I was always looking for the extremes in my life, in whatever aspect.
And so in music, I started listening to Linkin Park and System of A Down. They were fast, harsher, and wilder. But you know, there is always a loop. What is hotter than red? When you heat something, it turns red, then yellow and white. What's next? It turns blue! A cold color, but it’s even hotter. I liked to have this hotness of blue which is cold! So, instead of speed (red) I turned into slow (blue), which is more extreme.
I don't know if I make any sense at this point or not, but this is the real motivation for me to dig deeper in slower, heavier music. When I found doom, I was like someone who had reached his destination after a long journey. Doom is that hot blue. It is that extreme paradoxical matter to me. However, I didn't enter doom from the traditional door.
Many young musicians leave all they have to pursue musicianship.
In Iran, metalheads find interest more in death and black metal, as well as power and symphonic. It is hard to come by someone who started metal with stoner, sludge or psychedelic rock. Not impossible, but hard. I entered the doom from the gothic, folk, and death subgenres with acts like Empyrium and Saturnus. But now I appreciate every good metal, especially any doom I can find. That ache for extreme, however, made my primary taste to be funeral doom as we talk now.
Many records helped my musical imagination to go diverse. Vangelis' 'Direct' (1988) is amongst the most influential to me. Each track on that record is in a different style and different color. Vangelis has a diverse musical ground and his works have always been an inspiration to me. You can go right from electronic to orchestral and back to a more rockish sound all in one track! "Intergalactic Radio Station" is definitely my favorite track on that record.
On the metal side, I can't imagine anything more influential than Empyrium's LP, 'Songs of Moors and Misty Fields' (1997). The heaviness and agony in the sound, accompanying various folk and symphonic elements which lead to ever rising feel of the music. It's a rising agony. Truly a masterpiece. Many bands are cold and sad. Empyrium's music is warm and sad to me. This makes them unique. A folksy, symphonic, heavy doomy sound.
And it is not good of me to fail to mention Arvo Pärt, the Estonian classical composer. His minimal depressing compositions made me look at music from a whole new perspective. There is always that minimalist sadness in it, but a call is always moving you forth in his works. Then there is one sudden glorious, majestic rise and a tragic fall afterwards in most of his compositions. My more recent neoclassical elements are definitely due to his works.
Cosmic (EP) by Roaring Empyrean
How did you get inspired to start writing your own music?
I've always loved making music. Composing, rather than playing an instrument. And there was this other thing, called synesthesia. It is a kind of rare mental condition in which two or more of the five primary senses find a way to connect, which aren't connected normally. It has many types. I, however, can see the sounds. It makes me see every sound in my mind in terms of a shape, color, movement/direction, surface roughness, and brightness. I have had this condition since I can remember.
I don't see anything meaningful though, just some random shapes. Like the cello has a thick, dark green, rough line shape at lower notes and a bright, shining, thin green light at higher notes. So when I listened to music, there was a world of colors dancing in my mind and it fascinated me so much. I didn't know this was a thing until age 15.
You are alone in the scene here. Stores won't sell your physical releases and stages to perform are hard to get.
Being able to bring my own desired colors in music was something I wanted to do for a long time. I first started playing guitar back in high school, but that didn't give me the diversity I wanted. So I started creating instrumental tracks which were nowhere near metal -- mostly New Age music with synths. As time passed, my love for doom and heavier sounds found a way into my music. I used many instruments to paint my tracks: cello for green, piano for purple and blue, violin for yellow, sitar synths for shining red points, and guitar riffs for orange -- like a massive wall. My love for New Age and doom metal made me think of that paradoxical extreme once again. Why not try combining dark and heavy doom and funeral doom with bright atmospheric new age? This was when Roaring Empyrean came to life back in 2011.
As many New Age acts, I'd like my music to take the listener on a journey in their minds and make them think -- think about themselves and their existence. People today just follow what they are made to follow, and don't ask why. They don't think about why things are the way they are in this modern world. They lack thinking. They just obey and overfill themselves with whatever joys the unwritten rules are giving them.
What instruments, pedals, and amps do you have access to?
As for the gear, I'm afraid I rely so much on synthesizers and samplers -- not that I want to, but the poor economy here prevented me many times from getting the equipment and instruments I want. We don't produce any non-Iranian instruments, so everything is an imported product, and comparing the falling Rial to GBP or the US dollar, for someone like me, it is still impossible. But I have plans to leave Iran. Maybe then I can get the gear I want and make more lively sounds. But I can't keep quiet and not make music 'till then.
The Monarch (EP) by Roaring Empyrean
Have you had the opportunity to perform publicly?
No, never have I performed public. And I have no intention yet, unless I gather the gear I want. However, I've always liked to perform in a symphony once in my life. Maybe one day.
If you could play anywhere in the world, what would be your top scenes and would there any bands you'd love to be on the same bill with?
Interesting question! My doomy, metallic side likes to perform in the doomiest places. I'd like to perform in a sanctuary or a cave, as I have seen in some festivals like Doom Shall Rise, which is sadly is no longer going on. But there are many. Tokyo, London, and the US are generally places I'd like to perform. The other, non-metal side of me would like to perform at the Vienna Musikverein concert hall with a full orchestra and metal set together performing Roaring Empyrean.
These dreams surely seem impossible now, but there is this Persian saying: "Let the youth dream." I'd be honored to perform alongside Shape of Despair, Pantheist, Worship, Mournful Congregation, and Ankhagram more than others in the scene, but I'd be glad to play along any at all.
Mournful Congregation has a track called "The Rubaiyat" in which they sing translations of Hakim Omar Khayam's Rubaiyat -- short poems in a certain style. This makes them so respected in my heart, as I love Omar Khayam and we read those poems here as they are in native Old Persian. I'd like to play an opener for them.

Just Like Jean Valjean, Dominic West Is Done Being A Bad Guy
After a career of playing notable villains,  actor Dominic West says he’s ready to turn a new leaf. So his role as the tortured thief, Jean Valjean, in the new MASTERPIECE production of Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables, is a helpful bridge to be a better man on screen. In an interview, he talks about what it means to play Valjean, how his character seeks personal redemption and what the rest of the series has in store for the repentant former prisoner 24601.
Transcript:
Jace Lacob: I’m Jace Lacob, and you’re listening to MASTERPIECE Studio.
The story is well known — an impoverished man steals a loaf of bread to feed his family, and spends 19 years in prison. Upon his release, the convict nearly falls prey to old habits… but instead spends the rest of his life struggling to prove he has truly reformed.
CLIP
Old Woman: What are you doing there, my friend?
Jean Valjean: Trying to sleep, what does it look like?
Old Woman: Why don’t you go to an inn?
Jean Valjean: I did. They wouldn’t take me. No would take me.
Jace: In Andrew Davies’ sweeping new adaptation of Victor Hugo’s legendary epic, Les Misérables, the bleak stakes of the story take on dazzling new heights.
CLIP
Bishop: Consider this: even if the world has done you a great injustice, does it really serve you to have a heart full of bitterness and hatred?
Jean Valjean: How could I not have a heart full of bitterness and hatred? I’d like to see you after 19 years in the hulks! So don’t preach to me about God and love.
Jace: Best known for his turns in The Wire and The Affair, actor Dominic West has made a name for himself playing villainous rogues on American and British television, and his role as Jean Valjean includes its fair share of monstrous rage and sly trickery. Despite all this, he also found room for moral clarity.
Dominic West: This man’s a brute…who for whom compassion and humanity has been withheld for 20 years, and it takes a bit more to for him to be able to control that bestial side.
Jace: West joins us to explore Valjean’s story still to come in Les Miserables, why he might be done with playing scoundrels, and how he and his wife have become their own real-life Monarchs of the Glen in their castle-hotel in Scotland.
And we are joined this week by Les Misérables star and executive producer, Dominic West. Welcome.
Dominic: Thank you very much. Hi.
Jace: Jean Valjean has preternatural strength and a secret identity. Is he the first superhero in literature?
Dominic: He’s not the first because I suppose you’ve got the Greeks, but he’s the best. And he climbs buildings like Spiderman and he beats people up like Iron Man and he rescues children like Superman. But none of those superheroes did 19 years hard labor in a 19th century French jail, so he’s the toughest of the lot. I think.
Jace: We all know Jean Valjean’s prisoner number by heart and his story of redemption. What was the initial appeal of playing Valjean?
Dominic: The initial reservation was that the been played so many times before and that the film of the musical had just come out, and therefore what the hell have we got to add to it and certainly what have I got to add to the part? But the appeal came once I started reading the book and I realized it’s the best book I’ve ever read, and probably ever written. And that he’s I think the greatest hero in literature. And I quickly fell in love with him and  suppose what was most appealing about him, apart from his strength and ability to save children’s lives, etcetera, was his inner heroism, his heroics of battling your own demons and trying to do what’s right rather than what you impulsively and emotionally feel like doing.
Jace: We see Valjean not when he’s released from prison, but at the thick of it at the quarry. He strikes a massive boulder and it plummets down onto a guard, the same man who hit him earlier when he’s led through Toulon in chains. Is this an accident, or an intentional act on his part?
Dominic: Is very much intentional. He’s been brutalized for 19 years and he’s quite happy to want to kill anybody and certainly kill his tormentors. What becomes an accident is that he then rescues the guy that he’s just dropped the rock on and that of course is usually significant later on in Javert’s recognition of Valjean later. So no, he’s a brutalized brute who wants to harm people, wants to get revenge.
Jace: Even in these early scenes there’s an almost magnetic pull between Valjean and Javert that feels almost psychosexual, in a way.
CLIP
Javert: Well now, 24601. What was all that about today? You saving that guard’s life, why? If you  were trying to get yourself an early release, you tried in vain. There’s no hope of that, no hope at all.
Jace: And why is Javert so obsessed with this particular prisoner?
Dominic: Well it’s the big question it was the first question I asked in rehearsal, it’s the obvious question — What the hell is wrong with this guy? You know? What’s his beef? Why is he…? Because it’s not very apparent in the book at all. And I think we discuss this a lot and my preference is always to go for the big motivators which are love and sex. I think that’s what motivate most of us the most. And so I think there’s a huge magnetic attraction that Javert has for Valjean, and David hints that in the scene where I’m stripping off and he has a look, and it’s just one look, and it’s sort of…it just lets it hang there. David didn’t want it to overplay that bit because I think he thought what was more important was the attraction that a very small bitter mind has for the big mind, that a mean person has for a generous person, that the devil has for a saint. You know, I think that that’s probably more interesting.
Jace: These two men come to represent two very different sides in a philosophical debate about good and evil. Why is Valjean’s ultimate optimism, the notion that change and forgiveness are possible, so refreshing particularly right now?
Dominic: Well I suppose it’s fairly standard thinking now, that we’re not born bad, that we are the products of our environment and of of how people treat us. But when this book was written this was very much a philosophical debate that people believed, you know, people like Javert, that people are born bad and there’s nothing you can do about it. I think after, you know, a century of psychology and modern psychology and we realize that that’s not necessarily the case, but it’s worth being reminded of these things because I suppose you know, in modern political life in the UK and the US there’s a lot of currency in vilifying people for what they are, rather than who they are.
Jace: I mean even recently in France protesters called Emmanuel Macron president of the rich. I mean Les Misérables feels incredibly relevant and timely given the class struggles and sort of wealth inequality of today. Does that notion sort of stick with you, having played this part?
Dominic: Yeah I mean the French revolution happened because the gap between rich and poor never been wider. And I think it’s a lot wider now. And I think one thing that Victor Hugo understood was that once that chasm between rich and poor widens enough, there’s going to be trouble. And that it’s unsustainable. And I think I remember making this realizing that, you know, this what we have now, which is an enormous gulf between rich and poor in the world and in America, it’s pretty dangerous territory. And revolution tends to follow that of territory.
Jace: One year later Valjean is released from prison and giving one hundred nine francs after various deductions. But more importantly he gave his name back and becomes more than just a number.
CLIP
Javert: Here is your passport. You are required to show it to the authorities in every town and village you pass through. You have your name again, Monsieur 24601. I wonder if you can remember what it is.
Valjean: Jean Valjean.
Javert: You sure about that?
Valjean: JEAN VALJEAN!
Jace: Why is this such a powerful and profound moment of self identity for the prisoner?
Dominic: Well I suppose from what you says, he you, know he becomes a human being again, rather than a statistic or a number or a commodity. And hence his shouting to the echoing forests and wide open valley that he’s now free to roam. He shouts his name. And it’s very interesting with Valjean, his journey goes from being a number, to being Valjean, to being Monsieur Madeleine, when he’s the mayor, to being one in denial of Jean Valjean and of that being a personality that he is ashamed of, until his final embrace of that. And so it’s it’s very crucial to his arc and his development and his evolution that his names plot very clearly, what he’s called is very, very relevant to his state of mind.
Jace: I love the scenes between you and Sir Derek Jacobins Bishop of Dean.
CLIP
Valjean: You give me a bed here, right next to yours? Are you crazy? How do you know I’m not a murderer?
Bishop: That’s the Good Lord’s business, not mine. Or to put it another way, I’ll take my chance with you, my friend. Good night now, and sleep well.
Jace: What was it like filming these scenes with Derek Jacobi?
Dominic: Well it was bliss. It was. I mean I’ve admired him for years, and it is a tricky one when you got to cast the sort of most virtuous, nicest best man who’s ever lived, which is how he reads in the book. It’s so hard to write about virtue, it’s so hard to make virtue interesting. It’s easy to make the devil funny and interesting but it’s hard to make a saint interesting. And that’s what Victor Hugo does and that’s what Derek Jacobi does. And there’s very few actors who can do that, can make virtue interesting. But acting with him, who is a real hero of mine was in one sense, it’s dead easy because he does it all for a year and he’s so sympathetic and another it’s very salutary, it’s very…he was extraordinarily, he was very detached, you didn’t get involved talking much, you sat very quietly at the side of the set until he’s called. He’s very contained as an actor. And very generous, but it was great watching a master at work.
Jace: There’s a beautiful moment right before the Petit Gervais incident when Valjean collapses under the tree. We hear the church bells ringing out. We see the sunlight streaming through the leaves of the tree. It’s a really beautiful moment and then there’s temptation in this sort of Garden of Eden. The singing boy with his coin. What makes Valjean fall once more?
Dominic: Well it’s interesting, but in the book and I think in the script, too, but we didn’t end up filming it, is when he’s under the tree, after having encountered love and kindness for the first time in 19 years from the Bishop, he remembers his mother and he remembers the last time he felt loved, which was from his mother. And so that was what was going on at that moment of where the transformation is starting to happen. It’s been put in place by the Bishop, he remembers his mother and in the book that sort of precipitates his anguish, when his best side comes out, what makes him fall, what makes the scorpion sting? You know, he’s a scorpion and this man’s a brutalized man who for whom compassion and humanity has been withheld for 20 years and it takes a bit more for him to be able to control that bestial side.
Jace:You’re a dirty thief,’ Petit Gervais screams at him. How much will these words haunt him in these episodes to come?
Dominic: Well totally, and I think what’s interesting, what’s so beautiful about how Victor Hugo makes the agent of Valjean’s change being a little child, a defenseless child who is essentially, Valjean sees him, the bestial Valjean sees him as someone weak and therefore to be exploited. And what he learns is that the weak are what give us humanity and one’s attitude and one’s treatment of the weak is crucial to our humanity.
Jace: You mentioned a damascene conversion. After stealing Petit Gervais’s 40 sous, he changes his mind. He calls out to him. There’s a look of profound agony on your face as he searches his soul. Is this the moment where he where he does decide to be good?
Dominic: Yeah I think it is. I think the whole tragedy of his life and of his brutality comes crashing in on him he realizes that the deep, deep, deep sorrow of what’s happened to him in the last 20 years. And I think as soon as he’s allowed to pity himself in a way is is when he starts to love himself again.
Jace: Valjean collapses on the road curling up into a fetal ball in the dirt. Should we read the scene as a spiritual or moral or rebirth?
Dominic: Yes, very much so. Yeah, and I think that that element of the remembering the mother, which was we didn’t show explicitly, that is very much what Victor Hugo was writing I think that this is, he is reborn back into humanity.
Jace: What was it like filming this particular sequence?
Dominic: It was bloody hard. And really hot. It was really hot and it was the end of a long day that finally I had had to collapse. And I did seem to spend a lot of the shoot in tears. But for some reason at this point I couldn’t, the tears didn’t come. Which is fine, because they have to, but I was very conscious that this was probably the most important single moment of the whole story. And that can be very daunting to try and act. So I found it hard, and I’m still not entirely happy with it.
Jace: This first episode centers on both Valjean and Fantine. There are circumstances in this first episode are very different but they’re forced to make a choice by the end of the installment. Are they mirrors for each other in a way?
Dominic: Yeah, I suppose as she descends, he ascends. I suppose her attitude to Valjean the prisoner would probably be similar to what her daughter’s is later on, of revulsion and horror and what happens of course when they meet is that he becomes her protector.
Jace: Before this next question, a quick word from our sponsors…
Jace: You’ve played a lot of philanderers in your career, whether that’s McNulty or Noah on The Affair. Hector Madden in The Hour. Willie in Collette. Many, many philanderers. Why is that, do you think?
Dominic: I don’t know. I mean I’ve played a lot of villains and this was one of the, I suppose that was the initial attraction of Valjean was not playing a villain, playing the hero and the good guy, but as to why it’s philandering I don’t know. I’m not, I don’t know, I’ve no idea why people think I suited for philanderers. But they think I seem a villain. So hopefully after this I’ll be just plain, monogamous heroes.
Jace: Your big break came with David Simon’s seminal HBO series The Wire, my favorite all time series where you played Jimmy McNulty. Was there a sense at the time that this was a groundbreaking piece of television?
Dominic: I don’t think so. I think I’m sure we were all aware that with The Sopranos and that this was the dawn perhaps of a new golden era. But it’s very hard I find to take an objective view on things, I mean, and I’m only just starting to get an objective view on Les Misérables, in fact. And certainly while we were shooting no one, no one was watching it, really. I mean, a few law enforcement people and lawyers and a few gangsters but no one really was watching and certainly no one from the UK, and so I didn’t really, I wasn’t really aware of how how important it was and how what a groundbreaking series it was until much later, I think. You’re just too close to see these things.
Jace: True or false you joined: in Argentina you joined an Argentinian circus for a spell.
Dominic: I did, De La Guarda. Yeah it was, it was only in New York for a while and I did it in London for five months. Best job I ever had.
Jace: Sarah Treme, who created The Affair said of you quote, ‘He’s not afraid to let a character be complicated. There’s a flawed humanity that he seems to understand inherently.’ How do you react to that?
Dominic: What a lovely thing for Sarah to say. Yeah, I do get a lot of philanderers and a lot of villains but usually they have another side to them, and I think it’s essential no one is purely evil or purely good. Most of us are conflicted. So it’s important to be an actor who can portray that.
Jace: Given how well you nail the accent in The Wire and The Affair, are fans ever surprised to realize you’re not American in real life?
Dominic: They Oh I’m great I’m glad Yeah they still are. People still come up and I’m amazed. But I remember when I did it when The Wire had just come out in the UK and was getting quite a big following and there was a charity night and I was asked to go along. And it was a quiz night, that was as a charity night that was a quiz night, and the way the quiz was entirely about The Wire. And so it was full of Wire nuts, you know, people who really knew the show. And I remember going in and I had to ask the final question or something like that and I started speaking and I just remember sensing the whole room deflate with disappointment that hearing my accent when they realized I was a Brit. And so I you know usually in America people are pleasantly surprised, in the UK, people are unpleasantly surprised that I’m just a Brit.
Jace: Off screen you’re living your own version of Monarch Of The Glen. You recently rescued your wife Catherine’s family seat Glin Castle in County Limerick and converted it into a family run hotel. How is that project going?
Dominic: Well it’s great fun. It’s not true to say we rescued it, it was run as a hotel by her parents and then her father unfortunately died. So it was put on the market. But yeah, we decided to keep it going and to try and make it a going concern. It has been in my wife’s family for 700 years, really not much choice, but it’s going OK, actually. It’s going remarkably well, I think. You know, Ireland is sort of booming at the moment and I think once nobody from Europe is allowed to go to Britain anymore, then they’ll all flock to to Ireland.
Jace: Who is funnier —Dominic West or Olivia Colman?
Dominic: Olivia Colman is spectacularly funny and able to laugh and joke right up until they say action, when she is then able to go into a serious moment, as you can, which is not something Dominic West can do quite as well. And I felt as I found to my cost on the set of Les Mis, it was maybe that scene where we had the big fight at the Thenadier’s, and we were all crying with laughter at what Olivia was saying and then I realized of course that I had to do some proper acting. So I then tried to avoid her after that.
Jace: You directed an episode of The Wire and an episode of Jimmy McGovern’s Moving On. Is directing something you’d like to do more of in the future.
Dominic: Yeah I after doing that I thought that’s what I wanted to do forever and then I realized actually, well two things happened — when I started getting very good acting parts, I didn’t really have time for the writing, and the other one was I realized that a director is first in and last out, whereas an actor is last in and first out.
Jace: You left Guild Hall in 1995 one of your first onscreen roles that year was the Earl of Richmond in Richard III opposite Sir Ian McKellen. Was it a formative professional experience.
Dominic: Oh very much so. Robert Downey, Jr. was in it, Annette Bening was in it, Maggie Smith was in it. It was an amazing cast that I was just out of drama school and was able to sort of go around watching them all at work. And it was headed by Ian McKellen who’s a really great leading man in terms of his compassion and his ability to lead a cast and keep everybody happy. It was yeah, it was a wonderful job and an amazing job to have at an early stage in your career, because it was with a lot of people who were very generous with their knowledge.
Jace: You once reached out to wine critic Robert Parker to try and interview him. What ended up happening?
Dominic: He lives in Baltimore, so I was in Baltimore and I said, ‘Look can I come and interview you?’ and he said, ‘No you can’t but I’ll tell you what, you bring some of The Wire cast, I’ll bring the wine.’ And so we went out for dinner and there were four or five of us from The Wire. Andre, who played Bubbles, was with us and insisted on drinking Jack and Coke the whole time. I was telling him, ‘This is the best wine you’ll ever have in your life, and you insist on Jack and Coke?’ So we drank a lot of extremely great wine and I can’t remember much about it other than Robert Parker very generously gave us an hundred year old bottle of cognac and he said ‘I want you to open that when you finish the last frame of The Wire,’ and we did, which happened to be at six o’clock one morning in Baltimore. And we nailed the whole bottle.
Jace: That’s amazing. Dominic West, thank you so very much.
Dominic: Thank you very much.
Jace: Jean Valjean is the narrative core of Les Misérables. But his lifelong nemesis, the relentless Inspector Javert, keeps things moving in his pursuit of personal justice.
David Oyelowo: He has no problem in in saying that person is a criminal. And so therefore they deserve this punishment.
Jace: Actor David Oyelowo joins us next week on the podcast with a close look at how Javert’s need for truth and justice propels Victor Hugo’s epic forward.
MASTERPIECE Studio is hosted by me, Jace Lacob and produced by Nick Andersen. Elisheba Ittoop is our editor. Susanne Simpson is our executive producer. The executive producer of MASTERPIECE is Rebecca Eaton.

Bad*ss product ideas that have turned into giants on Gumroad.
Tumblr media
One question we get again and again over here at Gumroad is... What are some product ideas that will make me some moolah?
It is a great question, a lovely question. It is the type of question we like to hear. In fact, we like the question so much that we created this massive article to better answer it.
But, let’s hit pause for a moment.
For those of you who have never heard of Gumroad... we don’t sell bubble gum. But, we can certainly help you sell your bubble gum. That is... if you are a bubble gum craftsman.
We can help you sell anything, actually.
We are a super simple e-commerce and audience building software for creators, educators, writers, designers and influencers looking to make money doing whatever it is they love.
Thus far, we have helped thousands of creators collectively make over $200 million (that is million with an “M”).
Now, where were we?
Oh. Yes. Product ideas to sell on Gumroad.
5 product ideas selling like crazy on Gumroad that you can draw some serious inspiration from.
It doesn’t matter how sweet Gumroad is. If you don’t have a product idea you are crazy about, then our platform isn’t going to do you much good.
Fortunately, we are going to play cupid for the next fifteen minutes and introduce you to a few creators on our platform that have created wildly awesome things that are now selling like hotcakes... Chocolate chip hotcakes.
(Side note: who the hell calls pancakes, hotcakes?)
While we would prefer you don’t just outright steal any of these product ideas –– that’s a big no-no–– we are extremely confident they will spark some serious inspiration in you.
Or, at least we hope so.
Without further ado, here are some product ideas on Gumroad we ourselves are chomping at the bit to buy...
1. A series of illustrated essays about The Office (the TV show not the actual office, that would be boring).
Tumblr media
Shea Serrano is a former teacher that today makes his living slinging words as an author and journalist. He is extremely well known for his works over at The Ringer and ESPN’s Grantland (RIP).
In his spare time, he will entertain the Twittersphere with his hilarious thoughts on sports, culture and everything in-between.
And, when he isn’t doing that, he is writing essays about The Office.
In July of last year, Shea chose Gumroad of all places to shower the world with his Dunder Mifflin riffings. We were beyond flattered.
Shea’s ten brilliantly illustrated essays about The Office made its debut with a single tweet...
“we made a thing it’s 10 illustrated essays about The Office and you can pay $20 and then own it and look at it on your phone or computer or whatever it’s beautiful go get it... http://scrantonproject.com”
And, it was all history after that as Conference Room, Five Minutes took Gumroad by storm.
You can buy this digital product for the paperless world, here. Or, you can start selling a digital product (or a paper product), here. Decisions, decisions.
In all seriousness, what product ideas can you pull from Shea Serrano’s recent essay series?
If you have a favorite TV show (and don’t we all have a favorite TV show?)... share your thoughts about it, craft some pretty pictures and illustrations around it and then just make it into a digital downloadable product like an ebook. Chances are if you love the show, others do, too.
And, in Shea’s experience, people will pay a pretty penny to read things about things they love.
2. A comic book about falling in love with a vampire at a blood drive.
Tumblr media
Marketing gurus adore firing off phrases like “find your niche”... “niche down”... “there’s money in the niches”.
If you are one of the lucky few that have never heard these phrases, what they mean is to find a small segment of the human population that is willing to cough up their hard-earned money for whatever the heck it is you are selling... and market to them.
The problem many creators run into is attempting to create a product that appeals to everyone. And, in doing so, they end up creating a product that appeals to absolutely no one.
But... but... what if there aren’t enough customers in my niche for me to make a living (or half of a living)?
Our answer to that is... My Very First Vampire Blood Drive... a comic book about a girl that goes to a blood drive and ironically falls in love with a vampire.
Who is the target market?
Folks who enjoy comic books about mortals falling in love with vampires.
This little masterpiece has sold like crazy and it’s proof to the Gumroadsphere, and really the world as a whole, that there is money in the niches.
If comics about vampires make your mouth water, you can get your hands on My Very First Vampire Blood Drive, here. Or you can sell a comic book of your own (or really anything for that matter), by gently rubbing your thumb, here.
Vampires aside, comic books tend to do really really well on Gumroad.
If you tore through comic books as a kid and have a cool niche obsession... create a story around it, turn it into a comic book and sell it on Gumroad. There is a good chance others have that cool niche obsession, too.
As Fred, the serial-entrepreneur, says in the tightly packed coffee shop in Silicon Valley to the young aspiring wide-eyed entrepreneur... “there is money in the niches, young blood.”
3. An alternative indie comedy channel with a cult following.
Tumblr media
Sam Hyde is a comedian birthed from the Rhode Island-based comedy group, Million Dollar Extreme or MDE. The three-man comedy squad ignited the web with giggles during the early 2010s as they captured videos of themselves hilariously screwing with random unassuming folks.
Hyde, in particular, gained a cult following as he pulled bigger, badder, much more public facing stunts like his “2070 Paradigm Shift” TEDx Talk speech at Drexel University. Give it a watch. It’s incredibly uncomfortable.
By 2015, Hyde’s career had reached an all-time high after he sold a show to Adult Swim. Unfortunately, what goes up... has a way of eventually coming down. Shortly after it aired, Adult Swim decided to cancel the show due to Hyde’s extremely controversial humor.
Hyde is still chugging, though. The comedian has now thrown a price tag on his giggles and has placed his shows and stunts behind a paywall on Gumroad, charging his fans $5 a month.
While here at Gumroad we certainly don’t support Hyde’s more controversial humor, we do support creative expression.
Regardless of your stance on Hyde’s humor, his success on Gumroad’s platform is hugely inspiring, which we will touch on in greater detail here momentarily.
But, first, if you have a dark twisted sense of humor, Hyde can be found here. And, if you want to create your own comedy show, you can get the ball rolling over on Gumroad, here.
Now, back to the inspiration. Whether you’re the next Kevin Hart or the least funny person in the world, there is one major lesson that can be pulled from Hyde...
Youtube Channels, podcasts and blogs have allowed creators to build large followings... but they have made it very difficult for these creators to monetize these followings.
Whether you’re a comedian creating skits on Youtube or some thinker that is sharing her insight on her blog, why not offer exclusive content to your audience behind a paywall on a platform like Gumroad?
You can still record your regular show or write your weekly blog post... but maybe, in addition to this, you offer exclusive content just to your paid subscribers.
Mark Manson, the author behind the New York Times Best Seller, The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck, does this on his website.
He has published hundreds of articles for free. But, offers exclusive content to subscribers who are willing to cough up a few extra dollars each month.
It seems to be working well for him. It probably would for you, too.
4. A digital handbook that teaches folks how to sketch like an architect.
Tumblr media
Besides having a name right out of a 007 movie, David Drazil knows a thing or two about architecture. And, more specifically, sketching architecture.
Drazil is a budding architect, graphic designer and CG artist from the Czech Republic currently living, working and creating really awesome Gumroad products in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Somewhere on Drazil’s path as an architect, he had a very exciting and lucrative realization... architects can draw really well and there are probably a few people out there that would be willing to pay to learn how to draw like them.
No, we aren’t for certain if his realization was this long-winded nor worded quite like this (we can’t read minds, after all)... but you get the idea.
Ultimately, some thought of Drazil’s led him to create the hugely popular digital handbook, Sketch like an Architect, where he teaches both aspiring architects or just folks looking to draw like them, how to breathe life into beautiful architectural pictures.
What product ideas can be inspired from Drazil’s work?
If you’ve lived on this Earth for at least a decade, there is a good chance you have a hobby or a skill or a passion that you are better at than 99% of people.
So... make a handbook.
If you know how to whittle wood… make a handbook.
If you know how to care for succulents... make a handbook.
If you know how to make delicious homemade ice cream... make a handbook.
If you know how to make backpacks out of recycled cement bags... make a handbook.
Sometimes, the best product ideas are simply sharing what you already know and slapping a price tag on it.
Heck, you don’t even have to slap a price tag on it. Drazil, for example, let’s his customers choose what they want to pay for his Sketch like an Architect handbook.
You’re a good guy, Drazil. And, a gosh darn good architect.
Anyway, if you’re a horrible drawer and want to change that, you can get your hands on Drazil’s handbook here. And, if you have a handbook you want to create yourself, why not sell it on Gumroad?
5. A piece of software that helps writers (and non-writers) write better.
Tumblr media
We are sure you have probably heard of the acronym “K.I.S.S.” before... and no, we aren’t talking about the iconic 80s rock band.
It stands for Keep It Simple Stupid. We like to play nice here at Gumroad so we use the word “Silly” rather than “Stupid”. But, you get the idea.
Anyhow, it is advice often given to novices overcomplicating things that don’t need to be complicated.
When it comes to writing, both writers and non-writers tend to struggle with the acronym, using big complex language and jargon that is difficult to understand.
If you are in business, you’ve probably been a victim of this.
Do any of these ring a bell?
Circle the wagons.
Low-hanging fruit.
Move the needle.
Core competency.
Open the kimono.
Put out some feelers.
Thankfully, there is an app for that. Brothers Adam and Ben Long created Hemingway, an application that proofreads writing for wordy sentences, adverbs, passive voice and other horrible lexical atrocities.
In a lovely interview with The New Yorker, the Long brothers shared some of the back story behind their creation…
“After spending our days writing, we realized a common mistake: sentences easily grow to the point that they became difficult to understand. The worst part is we didn’t realize we were doing it. Our text was more clear and persuasive when we kept it simple. While complaining about it on the phone, we decided there should be an easy way to help people realize when their writing was too dense.”
The duo decided to create a product that would scratch their own itch. And, thus, the Hemingway App was born. Obviously, named after Ernest Hemingway, the author known widely for his tremendous brevity.
While not everyone is capable of creating a software application, the Long brothers are certainly not technology whiz kids. Nope. Adam works in marketing in North Carolina and Ben is a copywriter living in the big apple.
A lovely aspect about being alive in 2019 is that it is possible to create a software application... even if you don’t have the chops to built it yourself.
If you have an idea, sites like Toptal, Guru and Upwork allow you to breathe life into that idea... and sites like Gumroad let you sell it.
If you tend to get a bit long-winded with your writing and are guilty of getting a little fancy with your language, you can check out the Hemingway app right here. If, on the other hand, you have an idea you’d like to turn into a piece of software, get set up on Gumroad so you can sell it once it is alive.
Which of these product ideas are right for you?
Gumroad is wonderful in that it offers everything you need from an e-commerce and audience-building standpoint whether you’re selling software or coloring books.
However, this makes coming up with the perfect product idea to sell on the platform, challenging. Hopefully, you were able to draw some serious inspiration from the product ideas we just shared that have turned into giants on Gumroad.
Quickly, let’s do an episode recap before you dive into ideation mode, shall we?
One...
Product ideas don’t always have to be crazy original. They can simply be you sharing your thoughts on a popular TV show, movie, book or sports team in pop culture. That’s what Shea did with Conference Room, Five Minutes.
Two...
Product ideas don’t have to appeal to everyone. In fact, it might be better if they only appealed to a select few people. Niching down (oh lord we hate that word) is good for business. If you’re skeptical, My Very First Vampire Blood Drive should dissolve this skepticism.
Three...
Product ideas can be as simple as offering great exclusive content to the audience you’re already giving away free content to. If you have an audience, be it large or small... there is a good chance you have some super fans existing somewhere in there. Ask those fans to pay for exclusive content... they just might. Ask Sam Hyde.
Four...
If you know how to do something reasonably well, you know how to do that something better than 99% of people in this world. Why not charge to teach that skill by making a handbook like the architect that might be an undercover 007 agent, David Drazil. Better yet, if you don’t know what to charge, just ask customers to pay what they can...
Five...
Scratch your own itch. And, if you don’t know how to make a back scratcher yourself, you can always hire someone else to make it for you. The Hemingway Editor is a great example of a marketer and copywriter deciding they were fed-up and downright tired of long-windedness, jargon and complex language. So, they created a back scratcher. And, if you by chance aren’t technically savvy... find someone who is.
And, once you create a product that just might change the world, don’t forget to sell the damn thing on Gumroad.
By Cole Schafer.

Author Q&A with Dana L. Davis
In your new book, THE VOICE IN MY HEAD , your main character is having conversations with God. And God sounds like…Dave Chapelle?
The short answer here is… kinda! God is patterned after Dave Chapelle’s sarcastic wit. In fact, when my main character, Indigo explains to her family what “God” sounds like, she says, “Well…he sounds a bit like Dave Chapelle.”
I can explain! One of the themes in THE VOICE IN MY HEAD is opening up our minds to a new concept of God. For so long we’ve all imagined this white faced God with a long beard, sitting on a throne, holding a scepter, doling out blessings and punishments. How droll! I think as we evolve as a race of beings, we have to have our perceptions about God and spirituality evolve too. I wanted to create the kind of God I’d want to talk to. And I’ve always admired Dave Chapelle. Not just for being funny, but for being wise and intelligent and inspiring. It’s like that song by Joan Osborne, What if God Was One of Us? I love those lyrics. I wanted to create a “God” like us. So yeah…in this book “God’s” gonna make you laugh, not cower in fear. But more importantly “God’s” gonna open up your mind and help you realize that perhaps you’re the power you seek.
Tumblr media
It’s 100 years from now. How do you want to be remembered as a writer?
This question is everything! One I think all authors should seriously ask themselves before they write another word. I want to be remembered as a person who stopped complaining about how people of color were being represented in film and TV and in literature and who decided to do something about it. I want to be remembered as an author who worked hard to normalize the black experience. In 100 years, there will no longer be a go to narrative for black stories. I want to be remembered as an author who contributed to the new movement.
What’s your author pet peeve? Like…what really drives you crazy about the publishing world right now?
Comparison! I think platforms like Goodreads have given people a voice to say things like… “It wasn’t as good as (insert an entirely different book by an entirely different author with an entirely different life experience).” Look…don’t do that! If a book doesn’t resonate with you, don’t waste your time reading it! But for the love of everything good and pure, don’t read a book and then find an online platform to state… “Well…it wasn’t as good as this other book I read!” There are authors who create these lush, literary masterpieces and I read their works and I cry and I’m transformed and I see the world differently. There are other authors who create a laugh out loud, wild experience and I love it. Another author might create a sexy, fun love story. I can’t compare the lush, literary work that changed my life to the sexy rom com that made me not wanna be single. It’s not fair to authors. We have to stop comparing and allow authors to feel good about exactly where they are in their journey as a writer.
What’s your all time favorite book. Like…ever.
WHAT DREAMS MAY COME by Richard Matheson. This book wasn’t just spun from the author’s imagination. I mean…many parts were. But he compiled a ton of research on near death experiences and really took his time to compose such a beautiful story. I found so much truth in it. It truly changed my life and gave me a lot of peace about life on the other side. Glad I’m talking about it now because it’s one of those books you really should read more than once. I’d love to read it again someday. The movie that’s based on the book is interesting and I certainly enjoyed that too. But the book is truly a work of art.
Your first book TIFFANY SLY LIVES HERE NOW was about family. THE VOICE IN MY HEAD is about family too. What gives with all the family?
I’m all about breaking down stereotypes and normalizing the black experience. We don’t always have to be what you think we should be. We are princesses, queens, lovers, haters, doctors, lawyers, teachers. We are laughing ‘til our eyes water with tears, we are hanging out with friends. We are anything and everything you can imagine. In order for me to help people to truly understand that the black experience is just like any experience, I decided family is a great place to start. Families are the building blocks of who we are and who we become.
What makes you sad? What makes you happy?
I’m still living with anxiety…that makes me sad. It’s a tough road to travel. It’s heartbreaking at times. One of the things I miss is reading for enjoyment. My anxiety makes it nearly impossible to read. I also find it tough to focus on TV, so I don’t watch much of that. I had a blast writing TIFFANY SLY LIVES HERE NOW because it helped me to share a bit about the experience of living with anxiety. What makes me happy? Seeing the people I love succeed. Whatever success is to them. There is nothing better than celebrating a friend. Seeing their dreams come true.
What’s next?
More books! It was actually just announced that Inkyard Press acquired rights to my THIRD young adult novel Roman and Jewel. It’s a “witty, modern and unforgettable take on the classic star-crossed lovers story with a divers cast of characters.” I can’t wait to share it with the world. I feel like I came to Earth specifically to write this book! Ha. Can you tell I’m excited about it?!

I Wrote a Novel, Now What? The 4 R’s of Editing
Tumblr media
When it comes to editing and perfecting our novels, we need all the help we can get! Today, author and Municipal Liaison A.K. Child shares her advice for those NaNo novelists with a complete draft and who are wondering what comes next:
Whew! November is over, and if you were successful, you should have at least 50,000 words of novel sitting on your computer (and on the cloud, a few thumb drives, and in a hard copy, just in case!). And even if you didn’t quite reach 50,000, you still have the workings of a draft to your name. Some of you may have finished a novel, and others may have been working on something else, but finishing is key. Reaching those sweet, sexy words, “The End,” is just so satisfying.
For the sake of argument, let’s pretend you reached a “happily ever after,” and you have a full draft sitting there, teasing you. “You’ll never pick me up again,” it taunts in its whiney, ill-formed voice. “What will you do now?”
But that mocking pile of pages is so very wrong about your tenacity and dedication to creativity! You did manage to finish a draft. You did get to the coveted “The End.” It was all you. Don’t let that draft get the better of you now. Show it you are the master of your own destiny!
It’s time to edit!
1. Refresh
No! Wait…it might not actually be time to edit. It will be soon, I promise. First, you may want to take a break. Put your draft in the freezer. Think about something else. Binge watch all those shows you missed while you were writing in November. Detox from the caffeine overload.
Okay, now that you’ve had a rest, you can start the editing. Getting away from your piece for a little while does a couple of things. First, it keeps your mind from imploding. Second, it allows you to look at your story with fresh eyes to see the errors you might otherwise miss. Third, it gives you some time to think about things you may have skipped over, like names or that massive plot hole your characters decided it was best to cover with a tarp and never speak about.
2. Rearrange
So how does editing work? Well, that depends on your story. If you are like many writers, you may work on different scenes in random order. The first thing to do is put those scenes in logical order. Make a timeline! This will allow you to see where any gaps might exist. If you’re like me and have to write in logical order from beginning to end, you can skip this step, unless you just feel like rearranging stuff to procrastinate. Then go for it.
3. Reread
Now that you have your story put together, the best way to edit is to read it. You can do this on a screen or print out a hard copy, whatever works for you. You may want to read it aloud too (especially in public, because that’s always fun!), so you can hear the words as well as see them. The errors have a way of standing out if you perceive them differently. This is neither a fun nor fast process, but it is necessary if you expect to show your work to other people, especially if you want to publish it.
4. Review
Once you’ve gone through your story, it’s best to share the love. Find beta readers. Relatives are usually the worst, and friends aren’t much better. They may not know much about writing and may not give you critical feedback. Writer’s groups and other writers are the best reviewers, plus you’ll be able to sell your books to your friends and family and they can write reviews for you later.
I hope this gives you a small idea on how to move forward. Good luck, and let me know when you’ve published so I can read your masterpiece!

Morris Finalist Interview: THE HATE U GIVE by Angie Thomas!
Every year, I’m reminded of how lucky I am to be a part of the William C. Morris Award family. Former winners get to interview the new Morris finalists each year. This year, I had the incredible honor of interviewing one of my best friends, Angie Thomas, whose stunning debut The Hate U Give has already taken the world by a storm. So far, The Hate U Give has been at the top of the NYT bestseller list for almost an entire year. It received a record-setting 8 starred reviews, won the Boston Globe Horn Book Award, was longlisted for the National Book Award, and is soon to be a major motion picture starring Amandla Stenberg. This book is a straight-up masterpiece.
Tumblr media
And here’s what Angie had to say!
BA: The Hate U Give is honestly a modern classic, and I don’t think anyone is surprised to see it on the Morris finalists list. Huge congratulations on this incredibly well-deserved nomination. What was it like hearing the news that you were a finalist?
AT: You are the absolute sweetest (but I’ve told you that a million times haha). I’m absolutely honored that my book is a Morris finalist. It’s amazing to share this honor with some incredible books and authors, both past and present. (like you!) I’m completely blown away any time THUG receives any sort of recognition, and this was definitely one of the highlights.
BA: THUG has had quite a ride since its debut in February 2017. Think back to the moment you finished your first draft. Off the top of your head, what are five moments from your debut year that – if you’d have known – would have blown your mind?
AT: 1. Seeing so many people from all walks of life read and connect with the book. 2. Meeting President Obama(!) 3.  Visiting the movie set 4. Going around the world to promote the book. 5. Having so many black girls particularly thank me for this book because Starr is them.
Tumblr media
One of Angie’s many fans, at her launch party.
BA: The Hate U Give features a huge, vibrant ensemble cast, and every single character feels like a living, breathing person with their own life happening beyond the scope of the book. Are there any details you can share about one of the supporting characters that didn’t make it on the page?
AT: These questions are so flattering haha. One of my favorite supporting characters is Maverick, by far. People would be surprised by some of the things they learn about young Maverick. But I can’t reveal those…yet. Possibly for a good reason.
Tumblr media
BA:  What was your favorite memory from visiting the set of THE HATE U GIVE movie? Is there anything about the book-to-film process that surprised you?
AT: The best part about visiting the set was being a part of the family atmosphere amongst the cast and crew. They pulled me right into the fold. The only thing that really surprised me was how cold it can get in Atlanta at night lol.
Tumblr media
On the set of THUG with Angie and her amazing mom!
BA: Having toured with you, I’ve had the opportunity to see some of your young black readers share what THUG means to them. What has it been like hearing from the kids who connect with Starr – and who might never have seen themselves in a book before?
AT: That is by far the best part of this journey. Every single time a black girl or even a black woman tells me that they are Starr, I feel like I’ve done my job. It’s an honor to show my fellow black girls our beautiful selves and it is an honor to write for them.
BA: Your next book, On the Come Up, releases this year, and it follows a brilliant, badass teen girl rapper named Bri. What has it been like for you getting to know Bri? What are you most excited about when you anticipate sharing this new story with your readers?
AT: It has been so much fun getting to know Bri. She’s different from Starr despite the fact they live in the same neighborhood. Her voice has been so fun to write – she’s somehow funny despite the awful situation she is in. I can’t wait for readers to witness her black girl magic.
Tumblr media
Lightning Round:
BA: If Starr could have a BFF from another YA book, who would it be (can’t be her cousin!)?
AT: Haha! If it can’t be her cousin Bram, I’d say Abby then from Simon Vs and Leah on the Offbeat. :-)

Seriously, if you haven’t read THE HATE U GIVE, you should fix that right now. Order it here.  Preorder ON THE COME UP here. And check out Angie’s website here, but feel free to ignore all the shade she throws at classic Oreos.
Angie, congrats on being a Morris finalist. I love you a lot. <3
