Gisec 2022: du plans to offer bug bounty as a service to its customers
Emirates Integrated Telecommunications Company, known as du, is planning to offer a bug bounty as a service to its customers following the success of its trial programme.
A bug bounty is a reward given to ethical hackers who are able to discover and report a vulnerability – a bug – in a computer app or software, enabling solutions to be programmed before the bug becomes widespread.
The pilot phase of du's bug bounty programme, which was completed in two months and included the participation of several “elite security people”, allowed the telecom company to explore vulnerabilities before the services go to market, said Jasim Al Awadi, head of government and key accounts at du.
“We have concluded our bug bounty programme and the results are phenomenal. Very soon we will start implementing it in our network. We will have an on-premises server, then we will offer it as a service to our customers,” Mr Al Awadi told The National in an interview at the Global Information Security Expo and Conference in Dubai.
The UAE National Cybersecurity Council launched the bug bounty programme in August 2020 with the goal of strengthening the country's cyber security systems.
Du, along with e& — then known as Etisalat Group — and the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority, were among the first to trial it.
Abu Dhabi-based telecom operator e& – which rebranded last month – completed the first bug bounty programme in October during Gitex Technology Week.
The two-month pilot was conducted in collaboration with Yogosha, a Paris-based crowdsourced bug bounty platform, and Abu Dhabi-based defence consulting firm Beacon Red.
The global bug bounty market was valued at $223.1 million in 2020 and is projected to hit almost $5.5 billion by 2027, growing at a compound annual rate of 54.4 per cent from 2017-2027, according to California-based data provider All The Research
By industry, internet and online services is the most served category with almost a quarter of market share, followed by computer software (16 per cent), financial services and insurance (8 per cent), media and entertainment (7 per cent) and cryptocurrency and blockchain (4 per cent), according to data from Statista.
Regionally, North America has the largest share of the market at almost 50 per cent, followed by Europe and Asia-Pacific each, with about 20 per cent. Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa account for roughly 3 per cent each, All The Research said.
Companies, most notably in Big Tech, have recruited the hacker community to assist them in this endeavour.
Google, the world's biggest internet company, handed out a record $8.7m in bounty payouts in 2021, with the biggest a $157,000 reward for a security issue found within its Android mobile operating system.
In 11 years, the company made almost $38m in payouts.
Apple's Security Bounty programme, meanwhile, is more lucrative. Successful hunters can earn as much as $1m, and the iPhone maker will even match donations of the bounty payment to qualifying charities, according to its website.
Mr Al Jasim did not provide details of du's bug bounty rewards scheme, but said the efforts of their participants have been well recognised.
“For the bounty programme, we are part of the community and we are engaging by rewarding them based on the agreement between us and Yogosha,” he said.
The bug bounty programme is part of the wider efforts of the UAE’s wider efforts to strengthen its cyber defences at a time of an increased threat, Mr Al Jasim said.
Du, he said, continues to invest “billions” on an annual basis on its telecom infrastructure, with security “having a good chunk of that".
“We are investing in engineers, people and processes to build all of these defence mechanisms to protect the nation and the people living in it,” he said.
“About 10 to 15 years back, cyber security was a luxury item to have, but now it’s now a necessity. Cyber security is [part of our] DNA – it is something that we need to live with on a daily basis.”

Public anonymity is quickly becoming a thing of the past. Coming soon to an airport in Dubai is an artsy, colorful video security and customs tunnelthat scans your face, adds you to a database, indexes you with artificial intelligence and decides if you're free to leave -- or not.
By the end of summer 2018, Dubai International Airport's Terminal 3 will have replaced its security-clearance counter with a walkway tunnel filled with 80 face-scanning cameras disguised as a distracting immersive video.
Travelers' eyes will roam the enclosed tunnel and its virtual shimmering aquarium as they head to their gate, while their biometric data is seamlessly collected, compared and stored ... somewhere, under unknown terms and conditions. According to officials presenting the security and customs tunnel at the 37th Gulf Information Technology Exhibition (GITEX) Technology Week at the World Trade Centre in Dubai, its video shows will not be limited to chicken of the sea. The airport plans to also distract its very captive audience with desert scenes, majestically galloping white horses, or ... advertisements.
"The fish is a sort of entertainment and something new for the traveler but, at the end of the day, it attracts the vision of the travelers to different corners in the tunnel for the cameras to capture his/her face print," Maj. Gen. Obaid Al Hameeri, deputy director general of Dubai residency and foreign affairs, told press.
Travelers are expected to "register" their faces at kiosks throughout the airport so they may travel. The tunnel will replace the terminal's security control desk. "At the end of the tunnel," The National reported, "if the traveler is already registered, they will either receive a green message that says 'have a nice trip' or, if the person is wanted for some reason, a red sign will alert the operations room to interfere." You can watch a video of its reporter's walkthrough here.
Australia is currently considering the same thing, filtering passengers through a tunnel that seamlessly captures their biometrics (facial scanning) as they go through the airport.
The "virtual aquarium tunnel" was four years in the making and debuted this week at GITEX. Other stars of the GITEX innovation conference included a flying autonomous taxi and drone motorcycle for police. This year the theme at GITEX is "Reimagining Realities," with a focus on smart cities.

Dubai: The First Government To Put Its Transactions On A Blockchain
Dubai Land Department (DLD) has become the world`s first government to adopt Blockchain technology as part of its “Dubai Blockchain Strategy”. The project has been led by the Crown Price of Dubai and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Dubai Foundation for the Future, His Highness Sheikh Hamadan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum. DLD will launch the initiative at GITEX Technology Week 2017, running from 8 to 12 October at the Dubai World Trade Center (DWTC). “Our adoption of this system is aligned with our commitment to responding to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the smartest city in the world.”, commented His Excellency Sultan Butti bin Mejren, Director General of DLD. “Following the launch of the Dubai Blockchain Strategy by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed in October 2016, which aims to make Dubai the first government in the world to apply all transactions through this network by 2020, DLD created a smart and secure database that records all real estate contracts. This makes DLD the first government entity in the world to implement all of its transactions through the Blockchain network. “, as he elaborated. “This initiative is still in a stage of infancy. In the near future, we will see many partners joining Blockchain to improve their client services, including banking, mortgages, and utilities and maintenance operations.”, according to bin Mejren. DLD has created the blockchain system by using a smart and secure database that records real estate contracts like lease registrations. Then, the information is being linked with the Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), the telecommunication system, and various property related bills, as stated in the government`s press release. Full information about the DLD work can be found on the following link. Read the full article

Robotics & AI: The Two Integral Parts of the UAE Healthcare Industry
The United Arab Emirates was the first country in the world to have a designated Minister for artificial intelligence, showcasing that the UAE is dedicated to being at the forefront of AI adoption in the Middle East. The AI Ministry aims to create a productive, innovative, and high-performing environment for artificial intelligence investments within the country.
The most recent release of the country’s “UAE Artificial Intelligence Strategy 2031” outlines how the country expects to bring AI tools and technology to various sectors within the healthcare system.
The primary goal will be to minimize chronic and dangerous diseases and use AI algorithms to expedite the processing time for chest x-ray scans. With this said, UAE has predicted that $182 billion will be added to the economy by 2035 as a result of AI adoption within healthcare.
What Healthcare Sectors Will be Impacted by AI Adoption in UAE?
Robotic Surgeries and AI Doctors: The possibility of robot-assisted surgery presents incredible value for the country since the UAE has an insufficient workforce that is open to the idea of replacing human doctors with AI robotics. Cognitive robots would be able to integrate information from pre-operative medical records with real-time operating metrics to physically guide the physician’s instruments for enhanced and precise surgeries.
Disease Identification & Detection: There have been massive strides and breakthroughs in the detection accuracy of life-threatening diseases like cancer with AI-powered programs, wearables, and devices. These devices can perform mammograms with 99% accuracy, oversee early-stage heart disease and enable doctors to better monitor diseases in their infancy. There are prototypes for cardiac monitors that remotely detect heart irregularities and aid doctors in rhythm management. For instance, the UAE government is testing new Body of Health Analysis Pods, which will be rolled out into government buildings to help the staff monitor and detect early signs of illnesses.
AI Healthcare Mobile Apps: The country’s first pharmacy mobile application was introduced, allowing users to upload prescriptions and have medication delivered directly to them. AI chatbots can help hospitals and clinics better manage patient inquiries which can help improve doctor efficiency and save the hospital billions per year.
Chronic Disease Management Via Automation: To help doctors and patients manage chronic diseases that require the use of prescriptions, a robot-dispensed prescription option was introduced back in 2017. Its goal was to dispense 12 prescriptions within 60 seconds and store over 35,000 medications at any given time. Beyond saving space, the advantage is clear, faster response times and easier access (convenience) to prescriptions can save lives.
Telemedicine: The application of Babylon, a mobile AI healthcare application, uses artificial intelligence to provide 24/7 video consultancy to patients from all around the world, is coming to the UAE.
The UAE is also testing neuro bands which help detect strokes and flow cell sensors, which alert doctors to sudden drops in vitals of ICU patients.
With these adoptions of AI, clinicians will be better able to take on comprehensive methods for dealing with disease management, coordinating treatment plans, and aiding patients in complying with their long-term treatment guidelines. Artificial intelligence is only going to streamline healthcare in the UAE, increase the effectiveness of treatment, and enable healthcare facilities to monitor and treat patients more quickly.
