yesterday, we were working on final revisions and "polishing" our papers on The Outsiders-- I make my students write like three drafts, in order to hammer home the idea that good writing takes time, effort, feedback, and revision-- and I was working in particular with one student. She had written a fairly successful draft, but my co-teacher and I had been encouraging/ pressuring her to take her ideas further and make them more specific. She was resistant at first-- wasn't this good enough? But she got into the spirit of the thing and really brought her argument together. "so how does it feel, to put all this work and revision in, and now to have written these ideas that are much more convincing?" I said, fully expecting her to roll her eyes. "It feels powerful," she said, in complete earnestness.
