girldad steve au (stonathan)
Steve smiles at him, one of those heartstopping grins he’s always been good at. “Heya, Byers,” he says. “Been a while.”
“I…” Jonathan’s mouth is dry. He swallows back the words that want to come out. “I guess it has.”
The little girl smacks Steve’s cheek, whining to get his attention. “Daddy, who is it? Who is it?”
Daddy. His heart clenches a little, even though it has no fucking right to. Steve was with someone. Steve’s been with someone long enough to have a toddler, and Jonathan never knew. Was deliberately not told, because he’s seen Steve several times in the past few years and talked to him even more, and yet it was never mentioned. The betrayal stings as much as the jealousy.
Steve laughs. “This is my friend Jonathan,” he tells her, gently prying her hand off his face. “You remember I told you about Jonathan?”
He told his daughter about him?
“Picture-graphy!”
He told his daughter about his photography?
“Photography, baby-girl.”
“That’s what I said!”
“Sure it is,” Steve says, amused. “Well, Jonathan, meet Elena. Elena, can you say hi?”
“Hi!” She waves, a massive grin on her face. “I like your houses!”
He blinks, slow on the uptake. “My houses?”
“Your pictures,” Steve explains. Elena wiggles, and he puts her down. She runs for the crate of toys. “I showed her some, and her favorite was the room series you did. With the rays of light? It was really pretty.”
Jonathan knows exactly which pictures he’s talking about. Remembers being twenty-three and lonely, and seeing sunlight stream through a window. The dust floated in a way that mesmerized him. Soft, calming, and bright. So unlike the shadow that came out of Will all those years ago.
It wasn’t his best work, or his most popular. But it was something. Apparently it was enough for Steve to show his daughter.
“How old is she?” He asks, watching her. She’s stacking blocks, happily humming a little song and ignoring them.
“She’ll be four soon.” Steve sounds proud. Sounds happier than Jonathan’s ever seen him.
“Who’s the mom?”
“Oh, uh,” he rubs the back of his head. “I adopted her, actually. It’s been…I wanna say three, four months? Met her on the job, yanno? Parents didn’t make it.”
“Oh.” Well now Jonathan feels like an asshole for being jealous of a woman who doesn’t even exist. Jesus, did he really think Steve would hide an entire family from him for years? Paranoid, much?

Christmas Traditions
When Steve was young, his parents would make him stand with them for a family portrait to feature on the christmas cards they sent to work acquaintances, extended family, superiors they wanted to impress. Their entryway became a hall of mirrors with two dozen families staring back in their varying shades of Christmas sweaters, their varying quantities of dour-faced children.
Steve found it odd that he wasn’t allowed to smile - Christmas is a happy time, surely they should be smiling? But no. It wasn’t the image his parents wanted to convey: strength, power, longevity. So he pressed his lips into a line and let his mother fuss over his hair, let her peck his cheek and offer him a small smile that would never see the flash of a camera.
When he grew older, and found love beyond the careful affection of his parents, Steve shared how he’d always hated not being able to smile in those pictures, how it felt so forced and joyless. When they extended their family, bringing a tiny new life into a place where smiling would always be encouraged, Steve’s husband Eddie gently suggested they could take their own photos for their first christmas card as a family of three. Steve was of course hesitant, until Eddie lifted one finger in a staying motion and disappeared into the study.
There was a rifling of paper and a thud of something Steve wasn’t even going to ask about, and then Eddie returned to the living room, a sheaf of notepaper in hand.
“I thought you’d be against the idea - all scratchy sweaters and pouty faces and shit. Which is why I had some…ideas. Here.” Eddie passed steve the paper, and on each was a sketch. Just stick figures, but there were clearly two adults and a baby in varying positions: knelt beside a crib with robes on and what steve could only deduce to be a donkey behind them; the baby peeking out of a pile of wrapping paper as the two men shake tape off their hands; piggybacks, snow angels, reindeer antlers and a tiny beard. And in every sketch, all three faces were perked in a smile. Eddie had been sure to include a grin on every face, toothless or not. And how could Steve say no?
Maybe old traditions weren’t all bad.

"Please?"
"Nooo," Steve shakes his head at your little one, perched in the shopping cart in a flowery blue dress, "Not this time, bug."
"But she's so pretty!" Delaney points to the doll she'd found in the toy section, the fake, wiry hair twisted into an intricate bun, "Look at her hair!"
"Very pretty," Steve nods, pushing the cart past where the doll stood, "But very expensive. How about this, though, I'll make you a deal."
Delaney's interest is struck, and she raises her eyebrows suspiciously up at her dad.
"If you don't fuss about not getting the doll," Steve bargains, wary of how close her little sandal-clad feet are to his legs: easily in kicking range, "I'll do your hair like that tonight, and Mommy can take pretty pictures of you."
Delaney deliberates the offer, tapping her chin in thought the way she'd seen cartoon characters do. Then she grins brightly at her dad, a few teeth missing from the expression, "Okay! But you have to do it good, daddy."
"Promise." He links his sturdy, strong pinky with her tiny one, shaking once, then continues to the register, "C'mon, 'Laney, let's get Mommy some chocolate."
