ginichi - chosen soulmates
here is my submission for @ginichievents for their ginichi day!! it’s based off the prompts:
arranged marriage
the soulmate quote:  “He wasn’t looking for a soulmate. That would require having a soul to share, and he’d sold his off long ago” ― Miranda Liasson, Heart and Sole
I WOULD LOVE TO THANK!!!! @fiendtalks and @cheshirecaine for helping me with the soul mark that’s in this fic!! they were lovely <3
i don’t have an ao3 account so i’ll put my fic under a cut.
summary:  “I never allowed myself to imagine that I would have a soulmate, Ichi. I never imagined that I could even have one. And my soulmate turns out to be you.”
Their empires had been fighting for decades, almost a century, and the cause of the war had been lost with the assassinations of both the previous counsels that headed the empires. The war was sustained by a vague idea of betrayal from the other side and an obscene amount of money. Both empires were able to keep replacing legions in their army but, it was coming at the high cost of a lack of farmers, leading to rationing the food supply to the army instead of their citizens, a decision which was causing internal unrest that the empires couldn’t deal with on top of the war they were fighting with each other.
Recognizing in each other that they would both fall from their powerful positions if they continued the war, the empires came to an agreement – they would have their royalty married off to each other, to end the war and to help promote good relations.
Ichigo Kurosaki and Gin Ichimaru knew the purpose of their arranged marriage was purely for politics, with the official story being each empire wanting a desire for peace for the sake of their people. They weren’t expected to have children but they were required to remain with each other until death. Neither had a problem with this arrangement. Each was aware of the serious toll the war was taking on their empire and their people and both were aware that the roles they played would bring an end to the long war between their empires.
Gin and Ichigo knew that love was an emotion that they would probably never feel for each other but, they would definitely try to be friendly with each other, to show that their empires could achieve peace after decades of war. They wanted to set an example for their people: that the differences between their empires could be overcome.
Gin and Ichigo spent everyday together, working on relations between their empires. It was an uphill battle, almost Sisyphean in nature. Though their marriage was supposed to signal an end to the war, even though the legions were recalled, the war went from on the field to the political sphere. There was constant pandering, both in public and behind closed doors, from advisors wanting to push their agenda on how Gin and Ichigo should manage their marriage to each other, how to one up the other.
Gin and Ichigo communicated their desires and needs for their empires in their bedroom, away from advisors who only care about their social standing. They exchanged ideas about how best to mend the wound their empires had suffered for almost a century, even having arguments when their ideas clashed.
These everyday communications, both in public with their advisors and in private between each other, allowed Gin and Ichigo to know each other better on a personal level, sharing private looks and inside jokes. Their mutual situation transformed from an obligation, to an easy camaraderie, followed by a close friendship and culminating in a romance.
Ichigo got terribly sick a few years into his marriage with Gin, sick enough that he wasn’t able to leave his bed without assistance. Gin was by his side: helping him to eat, walking him around the room so his muscles didn’t grow too weak, pressing gentle kisses to his forehead and hands, and helping him bathe.
During one of the baths, as Gin was washing Ichigo’s body to make sure he got as much of the sweat off Ichigo as possible, Gin saw a mark on Ichigo’s inner thigh. Ichigo was still dozing in the tub, the illness sapping all his strength, so Gin knew he had some time to look at the mark and see if it was part of Ichigo’s illness. Upon closer inspection, Gin was surprised to see that it was a soul mark, the same one he had on his own inner thigh.
Absorbing the information and finishing Ichigo’s bath on autopilot, Gin was excited at seeing that he and Ichigo shared soul marks. He couldn’t wait to tell Ichigo when he was conscious again.
Laying Ichigo down in their bed, Gin felt lucky that the man he had been arranged to marry was not only his chosen love, but his soulmate as well. He held Ichigo a bit tighter that night, eager to tell him in the morning that they were soulmates.
When the sun rose the next day, Gin stayed in bed for a few extra minutes staring at Ichigo, amazed that the man he had chosen to love was also his soulmate. Gin had resigned himself years ago to never having one, knowing that, not only would having one not benefit the political game he was playing in the royal courts, he had long ago sacrificed his soul in order to make sure he was in a high position of power. Playing mind games in the royal courts didn’t leave time or space to care about himself, let alone someone else. He had done plenty of things that would be considered evil, even demonic, to people outside the royal courts, content with his choices because he was out for himself and himself only. It had never been a part of his plan to actually have a soulmate, knowing that even his soulmate wouldn’t want him after learning about the deeds he had committed without suffering a bad night’s rest. To find out that Ichigo, the beautiful, strong, tenderhearted man he had fallen for, was his soulmate, was the man who had the soul mark that matched his, was something that Gin had never even dreamed about, the possibility something he had thrown away years ago. Even as he and Ichigo had grown closer over the years of their arranged marriage, Gin never, not even in the recesses of his mind, entertained the idea. The knowledge was freeing.
As he played with Ichigo’s hair, gently petting and putting sections in disarray just because he could, Gin saw Ichigo was waking up, gently moving around as his rose to consciousness. Gin almost bit his lip to contain his excitement. He watched fondly as Ichigo blinked his eyes open a few times, leaning a bit into the hand in his hair. With a kiss to Ichigo’s forehead, Gin said a quiet good morning to him, informing Ichigo that he had news.
“What is it, lovely?”
“We have the same soul marks,” Gin answered with a soft smile.
Ichigo was stunned, and struggled to sit up. Gin helped him and repeated what he said.
“How do you know that?!” Ichigo asked, eyes wide in alarm.
“Calm down. Ichi. I was bathing you last night. Remember how I helped you there last night? You were so weak, almost asleep as we walked to the bathroom. I bathed you and saw a mark and had to look to make sure it wasn’t part of your illness. To my surprise, I see it’s the same soul mark I have on my own inner thigh, that of a lizard and a snake intertwined – the lizard is silver with your eyes, and the snake is orange with my eyes. Imagine my surprise when I saw that mark, our soul mark, Ichigo. I -” Gin’s voice broke a bit, “I never allowed myself to imagine that I would have a soulmate, Ichi. I never imagined that I could even have one. And my soulmate turns out to be you.”
Gin had to take a breath and look away from Ichigo to try and collect himself a bit. Ichigo had sat quiet while Gin was speaking, and now offered a soft touch to Gin’s face, thumb brushing over Gin’s cheekbone. He leaned over slowly to press a firm kiss to Gin’s lips, offering silent support.
Looking directly into Ichigo’s eyes, Gin pressed his hand over the hand Ichigo had on his face, and took Ichigo’s other hand to press it over his heart.
With another kiss to Gin’s lips, Ichigo said, “Gin, it’s okay. I understand why you looked and I believe you that our soul marks are the same. I feel the same way. I feel sad that you gave up on your soulmate, but our years together allow me to understand why you would have done so. I am beyond ecstatic that we are soulmates. As you know, we started this only as an obligation to our people, and the progression of our relationship has allowed us to get to know one another without the knowledge of our soul marks. While I love that our soul marks let us know that we were fated to be together, I am prouder of the both of us for choosing each other to love.”
Gin had started silently crying midway through Ichigo’s reply, overcome with happiness. He pulled Ichigo into a hug after he finished talking, pressing a kiss to the top of his head.
“Can I see your soul mark, Gin?” Ichigo asked quietly.
Leaving Ichigo sitting up against he headboard, Gin pushed the sheets down, followed by his pants. Lifting up his right leg and turning his knee outward a bit, Gin put his soul mark on display, a light blush on his red face.
Ichigo reached out slowly to touch Gin’s soul mark, in awe that it was really there. He had definitely believed Gin when he said they had matching soul marks – it wasn’t something to lie about – but to actually see their soul marks was something else entirely. Keeping his hand on Gin’s thigh, Ichigo looked at Gin, tears in his eyes and a smile on his face.
Putting his hand over Ichigo’s, Gin laced their fingers together and gave Ichigo a kiss.
