@tolkienocweek day two | shipping | rýndil x gil-galad
Rýndil, child of Caranthir and Haleth, dwelt mostly among their mother’s people the Haladin until the fall of Nargothrond, at which time they aided in the rescue and escape of fallen city’s refugees. The leader of these folk was Ereinion Gil-galad, son of the late King Orodreth, and in thanks for Rýndil’s service he offered them a place among his people. Rýndil followed Gil-galad to the Havens of Sirion, and the two grew close in friendship and love. Upon discovering Rýndil’s parentage, Gil-galad revealed that in truth he, too, was a peredhel, the birth-son of Andreth Saelind and Aegnor Arafinwion. Though Rýndil always felt more connected to their mortal heritage and Gil-galad was bound by kingship to the fate of the elves, the two peredhil found comfort and understanding in one another in times of darkness and despair, and in honor of their love and hope, Gil-galad gave Rýndil the name Amdirfael, “brilliant hope.”

Someone: Hey Gil-galad what’s your Quenya name
Fin-galad, whose native language is Sindarin, panicking slightly and mashing together her dad and great-uncle’s names: uhhh Artanáro

[Image description: Colored pencil drawing of Littleheart and Voronwe from the Silmarillion. Littleheart (aka Ilfrin) is an elf man with light brown skin, brown eyes, and reddish brown hair pulled up into a bun; he is wearing an earring in the shape of a wave. Voronwe is an elf man with pale skin, red-orange hair, lavender eyes, freckles, and unique facial features; he is wearing dangly purple earrings and a purple shirt. End image description.]
March 21, 2020
i have some weirdly specific, completely unfounded headcanons for these two! voronwe to me has always seemed very aroace, and i was like ‘then how does he have a son’ and i’m not the kind of fan to completely write a character out of the story if i can instead find a really convoluted way to include them, lol.
SO in my version of the story, voronwe settles down in a little house by the beach after the fall of gondolin (well, that’s what tolkien said in tfog, anyway). voronwe is canonically related to cirdan through his mother, so in my hc his mom is cirdan’s sister.
i’m a fan of the gil-galad lalwenion theory, but i also really like gil-galad aegnorion, but in a world where i go with the latter i still ship lalwen and cirdan so i thought ‘give them a kid anyway!’
thus ilfrin was born! (in this verse at least) he’s born at the beginning of the war of wrath and kind of has to be a secret because lalwen and cirdan aren’t Officially Married, and when lalwen gets involved in the fighting and cirdan gets involved in the organizing, they send their son away to live with his cousin, voronwe.
voronwe basically raises ilfrin from that point on. voronwe’s mother dies in the third kinslaying; lalwen dies in the war of wrath - they are both missing their mothers and cling to each other. people mistake ilfrin for voronwe’s son, and since their adoptive relationship is kind of like that they don’t bother to correct anyone. at the end of the war of wrath, voronwe and ilfrin sail to tol eressea and wait for their mothers to be reborn :)
if you like this hc, i wrote a bit about it in my fic ATATYA (specifically in chapter 3!)
also: why does voronwe have red hair? idk i just saw the model (ilka bruhl) and was like ‘hm. voronwe.’ and went with it. his mom also has red hair - i’m drawing her next :)

was thinking about my Gil-galad Aegnorion theory and... came to a conclusion that makes... a lot of sense....
basically, Aegnor and Andreth had a peredhel child out of wedlock (before Beren and Luthien!!), and they can’t keep this kid or publicly claim him. it breaks their hearts, but that’s the way it is. so Aegnor’s nephew Orodreth, who just had a baby girl a few years ago and is in his childrearing years, offers to take in the baby and raise him as if he’s his own.
now, the child-who-will-become-Gil-galad has a lot of names. Ereinion is very political; it’s cementing his claim as high king. Gil-galad is probably a given name, about the stars, it’s very pretty, and it’s only in Sindarin...perhaps his mortal mother Andreth or his Sindarin foster mother gave it to him.
but he’s also known as Rodnor, or Artanaro. this has to be a father name, given to him either by Aegnor or by Orodreth, because it was originally in Quenya. only they would have been familiar enough with Quenya for that. but Artanaro? “high flame”? where did that one come from?
i think Aegnor and Orodreth came up with it together. after all, their Quenya names are Artaresto and Aikanaro. combine them and you get Artanaro. it’s a reference to his birth father and his foster father, how he’s related to both of them and can claim them both as parents.
i think the kid grew up mostly using the name Gil-galad, Gil for short, and claimed Ereinion later...but even if he didn’t use it much, he always knew his father-name. and later on, when he discovered the depth of his parentage, he was grateful for the hint and reminder brought by the name Artanaro.

@arafinweanweek day six | ereinion gil-galad
Rumors abound of the true parentage of G I L - G A L A D, last High King of the Noldor. Raised by Orodreth and Amathluin in Nargothrond, Gil-galad was an unlikely candidate for king of all his people, but he survived as the only heir at the end of the First Age. Close in friendship with Círdan of the Havens, he led the remaining Noldor into the new kingdom of Lindon in Eriador. As king, Gil-galad allied himself with Númenor and rejected the friendship of Annatar. When Annatar revealed himself as Sauron and attacked, Gil-galad led the counter-offense in the War of the Elves and Sauron, aided by the power of the two elven-rings Vilya and Narya given to him by Celebrimbor. At the end of the Second Age, Gil-galad led the elves in the Last Alliance against Sauron, and with Elendil of Gondor fought Sauron in single combat, where he was slain by the Dark Lord personally.
The true father of Gil-galad was unknown even to him for much of his life. His name E R E I N I O N claimed he was the Scion of Kings, but from whose line? Before her death at the Havens, his mother revealed to him that he was in truth the child of Orodreth’s uncle Aegnor and his mortal lover Andreth, making him the earliest known peredhel predating Dior by several decades. Neither parent could care for a half-elven child born out of wedlock, so they gave him to Orodreth to be the younger brother of Finduilas. This truth was kept secret to all but those closest to Gil-galad, and not revealed to history until after his re-embodiment in Valinor.

if you’re still doing the make me choose thing, how about finduilas of dol amroth or finduilas faelivrin?
Finduilas of Dol Amroth or Finduilas Faelivrin?
(ft. her new baby brother alongside her still very much baby self; gil-galad aegnorion theory)
“But I don’t want a brother,” Finduilas pouted. “I want a sister! And I didn’t even know Naneth was having another baby!”
Orodreth sighed. “The baby was…a surprise. Even to me and Naneth.”
Finduilas frowned. She was only ten, and didn’t quite think it worked like that, but Ada’s face was very serious. She frowned, trying to look very serious too.
“And Eru doesn’t let you pick if you have a brother or a sister, He just gives you what you get,” Orodreth continued. “I am sure you will love little Gil-galad.”
“That’s a long name for a little baby,” Finduilas said thoughtfully.
“You’re little, too, sunshine,” Orodreth said, tickling her. She giggled and jumped on top of him until they were both rolling around on the floor of her bedroom.
“Are you ready to meet your brother?” said a tired voice from the door. It was Finduilas’ Naneth, holding a blanket in her arms.
“Yes, yes!” Finduilas cried, all reservations forgotten.
Naneth sat down on Finduilas’ bed. Finduilas realized with delight that the blanket was wrapped around a baby—her baby brother! He had wide eyes and a tuft of dark hair, and the tiniest little fingers. His ears were small, even for a baby’s, but they were cute and just pointy enough.
“Aww,” Finduilas sighed. “He’s so cute!” She booped his nose, and he sneezed, then began to cry.
“Alright, I think he wants to sleep now,” Naneth said. “Say goodbye, Finduilas.”
Finduilas kissed her brother goodnight, and Naneth took the baby away. She beamed up at her father.
“I changed my mind,” she said brightly. “I think I like him!”
“I like him too, sunshine,” Orodreth said, kissing her on the forehead.
“He doesn’t look very much like you or Naneth,” Finduilas said. “Is that because he’s so little?”
Orodreth froze for a moment, then nodded. “Yes, exactly. He’ll look different when he’s older.”
“When I’m older, I’m going to be a princess and I’m going to tell everyone what to do,” Finduilas proclaimed.
Orodreth chuckled. “You already are a princess, Finduilas. You’re the Princess of Silliness. No one listens to her!”
“Am not silly!” Finduilas protested. “I’m the most serious! Look, I’m wearing my serious face!” She pulled a big grumpy face. “See! This is what Uncle Finrod looks like when he’s serious!”
“You remind me of my Auntie Nerwen,” Orodreth said. “I hope you can meet her someday.”
“She lives so far awayyy,” Finduilas complained. “Will she come visit the baby?”
“Maybe,” Orodreth said.
“Baby, maybe!” Finduilas sang. “That rhymes!”
Orodreth laughed. “Alright, rhyme yourself to sleep,” he instructed. “It’s bedtime for you, too, sunshine.”

I was trying to figure out when Andreth and Aegnor could’ve had a child, timeline-wise, and still have the Athrabeth be a thing, and now I’m mad bc according to Tolkien Gateway, Andreth was only 48 at the time of the Athrabeth!! like putting aside the children thing - she doesn’t die until she’s at least 92, bc she outlives Aegnor! that’s plenty of time for her and Aegnor to have revisited their relationship and gotten (back) together, despite whatever bs Finrod was saying.... rrrrghhh I just want them to be HAPPY
(also who’s to say that Aegnor and Andreth didn’t have a kid when Andreth was younger, and then have to give that kid up...to Orodreth...and they broke up bc Angst and Pain...and the Athrabeth still could’ve happened...anyway yes this is about my Gil-galad Aegnorion theory what of it)
