I've been running the Gigapets Digital Doggie for, I'd say 5 days?

I think don't nee to run it any longer to know everything I need to know about this pet. It reminds me of the Gigapets AR Tech T-Rex I ran a few years back, which was a very cute pet, but also very basic compared to things like the frog, the pixie, and the cryptids.

This is a revamp of the 2017 Gigapets AR Digital Doggie, which itself is a remake of the 90's Digital Doggie. I don't think this version adds much from the AR version besides better battery life.

It looks really goofy and weird with it's nose-less smiling face but I kind of like it. And i'm pretty sure it's an homage to the original 90's pixel art.

So confession, i'm not a huge dog person, I think they're okay, I'll et a dog and make friends, but I've had too many bad experiences with the results of bad owners, both in my family, and of the variety that let their dog out without leashes to bite newspaper carriers. And I also think if you have the chance to choose any animal companion without any of the negatives, a very common animal that is already domesticated is a very, very boring choice. If I was gifted one as a kid, I would be a little disappointed it wasn't a T-Rex or a tamagotchi, but I would still love it just the same.

I mostly got the digital doggie because I guess i'm a collector now, and I really want to support Top Secret Toys and their Giga Pet endeavors. So keep that in mind if I don't sound too thrilled.

But the Digital Doggie is still very cute, well animated, and easy to raise. It's really tolerant of neglect, which is fortunate since I do have a job and tend to sleep in on my days off.

I suspect I'm not going to have much to say about the T-Rex or the Unicorn when I finally run them, as they're also from that first wave of Gigapets AR remakes.

biography: Khairi's biological mother was far from the ideal parent. She was abusive; mainly due to her labeling him 'odd' since he was completely introverted and uninterested in whats she assumed he should. Her alcoholism and attitude escalated the situation and around age 9, he ended up with him being taken away via protective services and placed in a group home.

While there are many horror stories involving youth in the group home setting, Khai was spared heavy damage. He actually lived in a solid operated home with several others around his age. The staff there were super supportive. Although he never had an actual real family, none of the relatives on his mother's side wanted to commit. The one foster family he stayed with when he was finally taken in at the age of 14 wasn't completely hurtful and but they weren't invested in him either. They laid down basic rules, which he did abide by to keep a roof over his head along with whatever luxuries they did provide for him; or rather that they kept up to date on for whenever they got a new kid when he aged out and had to go.

His bonds were mainly formed at school as through his classmates and friends, he discovered his hobbies. What he enjoyed. Life didn't suck too much when he could dive into his fantasy worlds. In school, his teachers also realized his brilliance and they aided in accelerating him into taking AP courses. By the time he finished high school, he had already achieved his Associates of Science in Engineering.

At the age of 18, he was made to leave his foster home since he was no longer a minor. He crashed from friends to friends place until one of his former physics teacher decided to give him a leg up. Khai was offered a spare room while he looked for work. Taking a brief break from school, he found two gigs; one working part-time at GameStop & also making deliveries in the area for Insta Cart. While he stacked up his personal funds, his teacher helped him apply for grans and scholarships while Khai still furthered his education by returning to community college.

He had a goal of going to MIT, which a lot of people who knew scoffed at since it was such a prestigious school. His intellect and diligence worked in his favor, along with programs and projects he participated in with the engineering program at his community college.

He took his courses left for undergrad part-time to balance his schedule. Though when the acceptance for MIT finally came, life was truly on the upswing. He moved to Massachusetts and began his new life. His last year and a half of undergrad courses, he began the graduate program while nabbing an paid internship.

And then he was told that he's a demigod. Let the adventure begin.

the battery did NOT want to stay in place and kept dislodging every time I tried picking it up. I wound up screwing the back off just bc I could and had a look inside and dusted stuff off. I currently have something helping to hold the battery in place and it's working fine now! it's such a cute pet and I like running it.

Haven't seen any compilation of all the entries apart from the official topsecrettoys insta acc, so I thought I'd make a list. I reallyyy wish the pigeon one won, I love pigeons so much. I think about that contest entry all the time lol :,D

Speaking of birds, its a shame there's not many bird vpets apart from chickens and ducks. At least digimon has some really good bird themed mons, altho im yet to see any pigeon or ibis ones 😔

The final winners of this contest were starcat/compukitty 2 in 1, pixie and bigfoot (recently revealed to have 3 cryptids; bigfoot, mothman and nessie)

I have the starcat despite not being too big on the gigapets style of vpet (and also importing to Australia is a lot) but I love cats and its nice to see more vpets in the market that isnt just bandai

So it seems all the major virtual pets from the 90s are on the market again, and I have one of each.

So far, I think the Digimon is the best one because it actually adds a shit ton of new features that werent in the original release like the ability to choose any of the classic digimon eggs plus some special unlockable ones, some new mega level digimon not in the original, the ability to raise two digimon at once as well as jogress them, battling AI opponents, it has a log that keeps track of each digimon you've already raised, so you can try to complete it, and you can put your digimon down for 3 hour naps in case you get really busy ( you can just alter the time if you need it to sleep even longer, only thing it effects is your digimon’s superficial age stat ). It also saves your progress so you wont lose data when you change batteries. They also made it easier to get the specific digimon you want ( although you will likely need to look up a guide to even know what you want ) , my only complaint is that you cant pause it, and they seem to poop more often than the original release... especially when you have two of them. They get sick every time I decide to sleep in.. oh yeah, my clock is a few hours ahead so they dont wake up at 7am.

The Giga pet is was best, but it loses by a lot because you are forever locked to the species of the pet, it doesnt have any interesting transformations, it just gets slightly bigger. It does have really smooth animations though, possibly the best animations I've seen in a virtual pet. It also has three minigames to bring up its happiness stat as opposed to just one like other virtual pets. It also took a different approach to sound than the beeps of the other pets, yhe little dinosaur makes a roar and growl. It also seems to be a lot less needy than other virtual pets, you can leave it alone for hours and it will be fine. So its good for beginners. But not the best virtual pet experience imo. Oh, there is a dog, cat, and unicorn variant too. I've also heard of a pixie that's a fair bit different and has an evolution branch, but I've not seen them anywhere.

Surprisingly, the Tamagotchi, which was the first and most popular virtual pet, is the worst, because it's the exact same as the original release. You still have to get a 2nd one if you want both the p1 and p2 Tamagotchi species. It has no new features, doesnt save if you change batteries, still has super strict requirements to avoid getting an unhealthy adult... I think it might even be worse since the pixels are kinda weak and the sound is extra loud. You can technically pause it though, by leaving the clock on the time set menu. So that's nice. It's especially disappointing considering a year or two prior, Bandai released an app that was an enhanced Tamagotchi remake that had both P1 and P2 eggs, new features and mini games, a log, and color. They discontinued it because it wasn't selling clothing or something.

Idk how many of my followers are interested in virtual pets, but there you go. If you had to pick one, I'd recommend a digimon. They're all under 20 bucks unless you get one of the new pendulum or X series. IDK why those are so expensive.

i also realized that i never posted a final update about rose, my giga pet pixie. they lived for 31 “years”, or days for us. when they were around 20 years old i assumed they were nearing the end, since that’s usually around the end of life for classic tamas. the honey which usually raised their happiness hadn’t done anything aside from lowering their health, and they were more needy lately. then the next day they went back to normal, and were still going strong at 29 years old. 

until a couple days later, when i got that low battery symbol. i was only running it for a month (compare that to my keitai, which i ran from the end of january to the beginning of may with the same battery) plus the screen shuts off entirely during inactivity so I was surprised. since the store I bought it from often has items that are a few years old (i’ve seen LPS there from the early 2010s), and this one came out in late 2020, I wonder if the factory battery was just old. since I was getting a bit tired of running 3 virtual pets at once I decided to just take the battery out for now.

if you pressed a few buttons on the low battery screen, your pixie would briefly appear, but then it would go back to the low battery screen. the screw was kinda stuck and when i opened the battery compartment, i was surprised to see the battery was held in by a spring! when I pushed and held the battery in it seemed to work, but after a minute the low battery sign came up again. trying to screw the back on with the spring wanting to pop the battery out sure wasn't fun, but I gave up since it looked like the battery really was low. I pushed the battery in again just to be sure and then it stopped showing Rose like it was before, it instead asked me to set the time and name a pixie again. there's no reset button like on the tamas, so idk why it decided to reset it then when it didn't a few minutes ago. 

i was trying to see how long i could get rose to live, but i figured that was goodbye for them at age 31. hopefully the next time i run it with a newer battery, i can get some new characters and see how long i can rly get them to live for.

A photo I took of all the modern Giga Pets in order of colors in the rainbow, at the request of someone on the Giga Pets discord. They thought it would be satisfying to look at... I agree.

I've run only two of these devices so far, blame the frog, I loved it so much I started buying the rest of the new releases, but I also loved it so much that I didn't want to stop playing until 100 days had passed.

I ran the T-Rex and the Pixie, but they were older releases. T-Rex was from the AR line that had no adult form, and worse battery life. It was still a cute device. The Pixie's main problem is that more your pixie evolved, the longer and more tedious the minigames became. I'm not sure how this new model is different yet but i've been told it's more balanced.

I had a digit doggie in the 90's too... but I lost him mere days after my grandma bought him for me. I look forward to running all of these but i'm already running three Digimon and the Cryptid so I'm not about to pile any more on.

So I learned that the GigPets Star Cat/Compu Kitty I got is a version 1, which is known to be somewhat broken, as in, it dies very easily.

But in the official GigaPets discord server, I was told to e-mail them and they'd either swap out my V1 for a V2 if I provide proof of purchase, or they'll give me a half off discount with free shipping from their website.

I gave them a screenshot of my amazon purchase and now they're sending me a shipping label.

Guys, my fellow virtual pet enthusiasts, I really think it's worth supporting Top Secret Toys. They are so genuine and helpful and are very transparent.

Also, they have aparantly made a version 2 pixie that addresses some of my complaints. So i'm gonna check that out, and I also have a Unicorn in the mail, and with that, I will have every modern Giga Pet except for the troll ( which... im not sure I want. That shell is super off putting )

Speaking of Gigapets...

It looks like Top Secret Toys is teasing the return of Gigapets Trolls.

My guess is they won't be Halloween themed, and the stitches, scary teeth, and hats are all drawn on for the Holiday picture.

These were launched alongside Gigapets AR T-Rex, Unicorn, and Puppy, and the AR releases were said to be overly basic with very poor battery life. I was impressed with the T-Rex, but indeed, the battery did fail after about two weeks of play.

The trolls on the other hand, I found their shell designs too off putting to buy, so I know nothing about them, other than having a cancelled minigame that was reused for the pixie, and so the troll cameod in it

I still don't know if I want one, but I am practically a Giga Pet collector at this point. I'm not looking to get every shell or anything, not unless each one has a different pet. I just want one of each device.

I do hope they get a significant redesign though.

If I recall, they said their next release would be early next year, maybe spring time? That's around the time the frog launched.

On my way to work, my Floppy Frog changed to it's next stage of evolution. It's now got little front legs... even though that's not quite how it works with real tadpoles.

Unfortunately, the change caught me off guard, his minigame changed, and the temperature mechanic changed into the scolding icon. I could not slow down on my way to work to figure it out. Sadly, no pause function. You can make it nap, but it's going to wake up when it wants to wake up, which could be very shortly after you put it down, so I had a lot of catching up to do after work. I hope this won't keep me from reaching the final stage of it's life because it's health drops too low when i'm working. I know these are sold with kids toys ( and are mercifully priced like one ) but I think Top Secret Toys knows that the bulk of their audience are former 90's kids who are now adults with busy lives, they should really consider adding a pause function.

The new froglet actually hops in and out of the water, and you can actually get different food options and a different mini game depending on if it's in the water or on dry land. That's a pretty neat detail. I actually really like stage 2's under water mini game, have not yet figured out the dry land minigame yet.

So, day 3 and I'm very impressed with the Floppy Frog so far. Could be my new favorite Giga Pet, though I've only played with three of the modern ones so far and I hated the pixie.

decided to put batteries in my giga pet pixie the other day and named her Callie. it was fun collecting ingredients and mixing a bunch of the potions. later that day the battery died (it was old) and I've been too lazy to put it back in lmao.
