episode 27 & 40 parallels || nobu’s illusion shattered

Highlighting Nobu’s facial expressions because they’re painfully great, and I wanted to praise Madhouse for depicting what he feels so well.

1: When Nobu asks Nana to tell him what Takumi told her, as Hachi hadn’t spoken a single word to her, either (like with Nobu). It almost looks like he’s expressing the slightest bit of animosity by just hearing Takumi’s name, and who could blame him, really. But it also looks like he’s sorta wary, too, bracing himself for what Nana’s gonna tell him.

2: When Nobu suddenly switches from saying “Hachi”, and instead uses “Nana” again, after having found out Hachi and Takumi are getting married. The face of someone who’s given up all hope of being with the one he loves. I can’t blame him, either, because after having found out that Hachi’s pregnant and that it might not even be his kid, Nobu finds out she’s also getting married to someone else. And I imagine it’d be difficult to keep the mindset of “one day I’ll win her back” after such a punch in the gut.
