Milan Fashion Designers By Sheetal Mafatlal
Milan is one of my favourite cities in the world and what sets it apart from the other fashion capitals is Milanese designers’ thought-provoking, cerebral take on the dynamism of design. First example that comes to my mind is of visionary Miuccia Prada, who’s been eclipsing style-scape by injecting intellectualism in her design process. The result is artisanal clothing, which marries design and functionality artfully. After referencing the global nomad last season, this time her gimlet-eyed focus went back to her own archive and rekindled 20s Deco prints. She played with marabou feathers which embellished the slashed-high-at-the-thigh skirts and heels. Each of Prada’s runway presentation is a socio-political commentary and its core aesthetic has always been about finding the role of fashion in today’s context. Over the last few seasons, Gucci has also become a major talking point in Milan’s chic corridors. In a very short span of time, designer Alessandro Michele has been able to redefine the house’s code and insignias, something which many of his contemporaries in other ateliers are struggling with. Amal Clooney is the latest celeb to step out in one of Michele’s designs—a silk georgette dress from the Fall 2016 collection that offers a touch of his signature whimsy with an exaggerated bow necktie. He’s dresses men in lace perhaps referencing an eccentric poet of a bygone era, he’s churned out granny dresses with pussy-bow collars and louche pantsuits presented with capes. His muse has been an eccentric dresser, who wears seventies oversized sequinned eye wear, lame pleated skirts and fur loafers. His flawless execution of the 3 D clothing as 2 D has made him the hottest ticket in Milan. One look at the Milan front row and every fashion editor is seen strutting in the label’s hottest selling fur-lined loafers. After Frida Giannini’s departure from the house, Michele has been able to inject the luxury label with a magic potion which has contributed to its success over the past few seasons. This season too, the corset trend continued here. A star and snake embossed bustier worn over an embroidered tulle gown stood out and so did the luscious Elton handbag. More is more seems to be the memo and looks like that the outré 80s are here to stay! A tiered evening dress, which had a giant red embroidered heart, pierced with a jeweled dagger on the front will be a red carpet fav come awards season. Also, I couldn’t help but notice the knife-pleated ruffles accenting a panoply of ensembles – from twin-sets to party dresses. What made the goings-on at the Gucci show quite dramatic was Florence Welch reading out the poems of William Blake on the soundtrack as Michele’s army floated on the runway.Another show which caught my attention was of the talented Philipp Plein. His label has become a major force to reckon with in a very short span of time. The likes of Rita Ora and Fergie have been his sporting his va va voom creations with elan. This time his invitation read, “Alice in Ghettoland”. The designer created a giant garden which was a playground for ice cream trucks, bare-chested gardeners and beefy car wash men. However, despite all the theatrics, the real heroes were the clothes here! Plain’s army comprises femme fatales strutting in faded wash denims accented with gold chains and layered with track jackets, metallic croc suits. A tabard dress exposing the side of the leg was sexy and felt totally of-the-moment. Paris Hilton was a vision in a cut-work off-shoulder gown exposing the thigh-high gladiator shoes. The chain-mail jewellery had an unmistakable rock and roll vibe to it.Talking of risque, Alberta Ferretti, Milan’s unrivalled queen of chiffon sent supermodel Bella Hadid in a tooled-leather corset with a long tiered ruffled skirt in silk to scorch her runway, Dolce and Gabbana’s vibrant line was high on prints depicting the Italian lifestyle – pasta, gelato, martini glasses, sunflower prints Catholic imagery on pretty party dresses. Another highlight was maverick Giambattista Valli, who hosted his Giamba show at Palazzo Litta, a Baroque palace in Milan which dates back to 17th century. I liked the lace and jacquard mini dresses and floor-length tiered numbers with sequin applique embroideries. All in all, Milan Spring Summer 2017 celebrated unapologetic glamour.
