2023 Media Thread - Part 139
Ghosts of Greywoods
A dramatic and gothic yuri. The drama is really nice and the plot and storytelling really dwell within its genre. It makes for something that feels pretty unique compared to what I've read, although it could have always gone 'deeper' with that aspect. The weakest aspect is unfortunately the romance and bond between the main characters. There is some cute stuff, but with a fairly large cast, the time each character gets is spread a little thin and the time for moments that really develop and show their bond is even thinner. Overall its a fun and interesting read.

Wait, what is this about incest in I’m in love with the villainess? Could you tell me in what aspect, if that’s okay? Because that sounds stupid as hell. I’ve been sorta keeping up with the anime to see if it gets any better (bc tbh the protag’s actions towards the villainess in the first couple episodes have been extremely male gaze-y and sexualized), but that one convo they have about homosexuality made me think it’s got some potential.
the convo abt homosexuality had me all hyped bc it was actually well-done, but yeah later it's revealed that these two siblings (already forgot their names and role in the story) are in love with each other. and the protagonist explicitly says she feels bad for them because her homosexuality is also seen as perverse. so the narrative compares homosexuality to incest. and i was like nah, i'm good. waste of a fantastic premise smh
#answered#weeb hours#weebfem blood pact#i have GL recs#begging everyone to read her shim chong#also kakeochi girl#and despite being a schoolgirl GL i loved yagate kimi ni naru (bloom into you)#i also recommend getting to know grace/grace gildeul-igi it's a little darker#in a similar dark vein is ghosts of greywoods/siseonui kkeut#and sayonara rose garden is a good historical romance

Broken Pieces, Shattered Dreams
ft @mikael-winters
Nathan had seen it back at the beginning, if he really thought about it. When you put it in perspective, it was all the little things that added up. It stacked like blocks, one by one, until eventually the wavering tower grew too unstable and toppled to the ground.
It was in the small things that most people might not have noticed at all. The off hand comments that had to be slipped into conversation which poked fun at Mikael and dug deep at his insecurities; spoken with a smile and a jest that everyone else chuckled at, but it had a sharpened edge meant to open wounds. The way that a strong hand would come in to turn Mikael away, words that twisted and contorted into something ugly if you thought hard enough about it, but could just as easily be something said out of kindness and caring. But they weren’t. Were they? Eyes that were constantly watching, watching, watching…looking over his shoulder, watching his every move, butting in at anything he didn’t like. It was because he was just so in tune with Mikael, because he loved him, that he wanted what was best for him.
Wasn’t it?
Mikael had always seemed so happy, when they’d come around, that Nate had assumed the best. He’d seemed like a nice guy, a supportive boyfriend, someone that made Mikael smile bright. So Nate brushed off that small scratch at the back of his mind that said something wasn’t quite right about it all. He’d set aside the actions that gave him pause, that made him think there was something deeper going on than what the surface looked like - because Mikael had always laughed at the jokes, had smiled back, had always conceded with a thank you and agreement and a comfort he hadn’t seen before. Mikael was happy, and Nathan didn’t want to be the one to step in the way of that.
But should he have? Before it had gotten too bad? Or would it have broken things between them even more? Driven a fissure between the two and pushed Mik even closer to the hellfire that burned beneath?
His hands were shaking before he knitted them into the sheets. He wasn’t sure how long he’d been sitting there, shot upright in bed and trying to catch his breath, still tangled in the blankets. He could feel it still, lingering, ghosts that the dream and the memory left behind, marks of a hand slapped across a cheek, a fist thrown in anger. It had never been done to him, of course - but watching Mik’s face as it took the blows from Hector time and again, the bruises that had been left behind before they were covered and hidden away…They were marks on Nathan, too. Hits that burned and bled in different ways in the waking hours following the past that replayed on the inside of his eyelids. Tears that raced tracks against Nathan’s cheeks, mirroring Mik’s that wouldn’t leave his memory.
It locked pieces into place, slowly but surely, to paint the full picture that had been obscured for Nate since Mikael’s return to Greywood. The lingering questions had gotten answers, but he didn’t feel any better for it. He should’ve known. He should’ve done something. He should’ve... he could’ve... he would’ve…
Mikael had been screaming for help all this time, but Nathan hadn’t been listening.
He let out a long, stabilizing breath, trying to gather control of his senses, before the tears stung anew and he buried his face in his hands.

𝕛𝕖𝕤𝕤𝕖 𝕣𝕙𝕖𝕥𝕥 𝕔𝕠𝕨𝕖𝕟
he was born thirty-five years ago, is a human and lives in white oaks as a salvage operator. he looks an awful lot like michael vlamis.
"Now it's all residue, you're just a memory I wake up to I'm haunted by the ghost of you."
tw: dysfunctional family, alcoholism, child neglect, abandonment
There's nothing too special or remarkable to anyone's story, because they all have some trials and tribulations... they all have their ups and downs. Just depends when you drop in. Jesse Cowen's story is no different. It's certainly shaped him into the man he is today, though to say if he's a good or bad man is still up for debate. Like mentioned before, it depends when you drop in. If one is hard-pressed to label him anything, it might be some muddied middle-of-the-road conundrum- one you're not sure if you can or can't trust, let alone count on. You'd be better off flipping a coin to decide. No, of course he wasn't always so confusing and walled off. Maybe if his parents had bothered to care a little bit more, the man might have better guidance and discipline to him. Instead, his old man cared more to haggle about which curse word was best in a situation and insisted he didn't take crap from anyone, even if it cost him another job. His mom was just another trapped woman who got herself knocked up with the wrong man she couldn't get out from under, and it was hit or miss whether she'd look upon her children with a tender eye. Their home was rife with that stale, cigarette-and-vodka stench, and it was a good day if empty containers actually made it into the bin. Neither of them were really meant to be parents and everyone knew it, too... But that was their problem. At least he had his sister. Well, had his sister, yeah. His elder by just a few years, she was better mother to Jesse than his mom ever had been, which wasn't fair to either of them. She made sure he was inside by the time the streetlights came on. She made sure he went to bed with something in his stomach. She made sure he at least made some effort with his schoolwork. They would be thick as thieves one moment, and resentful of each other the next. Sometimes it was nice to have each other- sometimes, it sucked because you only had each other. Mom gave up at some point- just up and decided she deserved better, wanted more for herself, and that didn't include any of them. And dad... Well, they all knew he wouldn't hold up alone with two kids. He tried to dump them on the grandparents, and they weren't in any shape to even help themselves at their elderly years. Any semblance of structure broke down and both struggled with the knowledge nobody wanted them. Nothing but a couple of troublemakers, right, that landed themselves where people gossiped they would. Then one day, even she was gone. The circumstances of that, Jesse still doesn't know. Any hope in him, says she was taken. In the deep dark places he doesn't talk about, he knows she left too. He saw her with that strange person that was far more special than either of them would ever be, and she didn't look forced to go at all. But, call it what you will, Jesse refused she would just leave him behind. They took her, and he would find where, one day. He's been chasing her every day since. Greywood, he heard, was the next place to look.
“what power did he attain when settling in greywood?”
Intuitive aptitude- Jesse has always been one of those people prone to self-sabotage behavior. His work would be right, but the answer wrong. A smart guy, if he'd only let himself be. One of those frustrating idiots that intentionally stunts whatever growth you know he is capable of, because screw you and whatever you think he can and should do. That gift, if one can call it so, only came into sharper focus when he crossed into Greywood's territory. Before, he could figure his way through something probably, if he actually put his mind to it. Here, it's almost automatic, almost too easy, if he really wanted it to be. Problem is, he doesn't always care to let it be so. As they used to say when he was a kid, it's all wasted on him.

You should check out Ghosts of Greywoods! It's mostly a thriller with a side of romance, but I actually like that because I don't always like reading romance oriented stories but like having f/f romances to read about instead of always having to pick between f/f romance and reading a different genre + het romance
oh i love the art style already!! also ur so right. there needs to be more depictions of lesbianism in genres that are not romance. i want a lesbian dystopia or horror or thriller etc
#that’s also why movies like the perfection and i care a lot are so good#and why haunting of bly manor is so good too

A Weekend at the Hauntley Inn || Part One: Friday
Summary: A familiar stranger checks into the inn on Halloween Weekend...
ft. the Hauntley Staff (@wolf-innsheepsclothing)
It was Halloween Weekend at the Hauntley, a most beautiful and decadent time for a haunted house and all its beloved monsters. Those monsters had been waiting all year for this very weekend. It was a time for them to shed their human faces, stretch out their wicked bodies, and finally relax. One by one, the guests arrived with smiles as wide as half-moons, and Snow exchanged those smiles for room keys. For one weekend, they’d fill her dining room with laughter and conversation – roam the gardens – drink by the fire– and this old place would sing with life. They’d be more than friends to the Hauntley. They’d be part of the family.
And that was why Snow was right there at the front desk, overseeing check-in, even if it wasn’t normally her job. Oh, she’d help out here and there; Snow did so love working the front desk. Whenever she did, it brought her right back to when she was just 18, starting her first ever job at the Green Lake House BnB. She liked the idea that she’d be the first thing that her guests would see– like a perfect first sentence in a novel, or a welcome mat at the door that hinted at the things to come.
“Just two more guests,” said Snow. “Oh, but the Greywoods called, that’s right– they’ll be a midnight check-in.” She nodded, pen scratching over the registrar to make that note. “ I’ll need to have a fresh brew ready for them. I should start that–” Snow checked her watch “--hm, in about an hour? Oh shoot, I’ll run into suppertime then… I could probably squeeze it in after–”
The front door opened as the penultimate guest stepped through. Snow glanced the figure’s way and like always, easily found her smile, as the stranger meticulously cleaned his boots.
Then, the man looked up and Snow’s smile vanished.
She knew that man.
At first, she thought what any innkeeper of a haunted house would think: this man was a ghost. He drifted toward her, unfolding a past that Snow had tried to shove under her bed, or in the back of her closet, all those places where children tried to hide their mess. Yet he’d escaped there somehow, the way that real-life Bogeymen always do. He stopped in front of the desk, lip twitching in a smile she couldn’t read. His chin was covered with days-old stubble, but as he removed his hat, the light bounced off the top of his shiny, pale bald head.
I’m the bald devil. Ha! You’ll know. That was how he’d signed the first letter to her.
“Hullo there, flower,” greeted John in his Irish lilt. “Fascinating the twists and turns the roads take us, eh? For me to show up on your doorstep like this.”
Snow’s heart beat so quickly, she thought she might faint. All she could manage was, “Oh, yes.”
John chuckled. “I see you didn’t recognize my name.”
Snow glanced down at her registrar. “You– you never gave me your last name. Before.”
“Ah. So I didn’t. That sounds like me.” John put his hand down on the desk. His knuckles were rough and dirty (Snow could only imagine where he had been. In what graveyards, digging up what bodies?) “But I didn’t mean to surprise you, flower. What a lovely little place this is, eh?” John whistled, leaning against the desk with more of his body weight. “The pictures on your website don't do it justice.”
Next to Snow, Demi cleared his throat. Instantly, that pulled Snow out of her shock. She started.
“Right, well– we should get you set up in your room then!” Her voice seemed to come from somewhere else– from that 18-year-old version of herself, maybe, who stood at the front desk of the Green Lake BnB and never hesitated. Xuemei had no reasons to hesitate, no reasons not to give her smile. She hadn’t touched any dead bodies. She hadn’t met any necromancers. She was just a girl.
Snow fumbled with her papers enough that Demi quickly stepped in. “Here we are, if you could just sign these,” said Demi smoothly.
Snow watched John’s thick fingers grip the pen. His signature was wobbly and clumsy. She wondered if he was a bit drunk already. (He had always been a bit drunk, even when teaching her.)
“And just these as well, please,” continued Demi, as Snow folded her hands in front of herself. “And now the card on file– the one you used to place the reservation. Thank you! Alright, just one more moment, sir…” The keys clacked on the computer. Demi glanced toward Snow, a question in his eyes. She smiled at him as reassurance, but that smile was a lie.
“Alright. You’ll be in the Cinnamon Room. Here are your keys. It’s on the second floor. Do you have any questions for us?” Demi asked.
John gripped the keys and grinned. “Not at the moment.” He put his hat back on, tipping it in Snow’s direction. “I’ll see you later.”
And then Snow’s Bogeyman slipped upstairs, each step creaking as he went. As soon as he was gone, Snow sat back onto the stool behind the desk. What had she done, letting her own personal demon into the inn?
“Miss Song?” murmured Demi.
Snow glanced up at him. “It’s… I’ll tell you later. In the kitchen. Will you get Wolf for me?”
-
But first, there were guests to attend to.
Snow had always loved that about hospitality– that no matter the disaster, you still had to make the beds, fetch the sheets, cook dinner, and throw open the windows to let the beautiful moonlight in. It was a Friday, same as ever, which meant it was busy and bustling and there was so much to do. Guests had immediate requests and Bones had to start the feast. Snow wanted to talk to her staff right away, but it had to wait. Because her guests were always her priority. Even John.
It was only until the dining room was filled with all the Hauntleys’ guests that the Hauntley staff huddled together there in the kitchen for an impromptu staff meeting where she told them exactly who the man was – John, her first necromancer teacher.
“Is he dangerous?” Demi asked the obvious question. But there wasn’t an obvious answer. At least, not to Snow.
And so she was quiet, first opening the door to the kitchen ever so slightly to peer out at dinner taking place. She found John easily. He’d grabbed one of the tables around the perimeter, ordered the lobster, and had already polished off one glass of ice water. He was working on his second, as he ate in big bites and didn’t talk to anyone else, but that wasn’t unusual. Many people came to the Hauntley Inn alone.
Snow let the door swing closed again and she told them the truth. “I don’t know. I don’t think so. He… we just didn’t end things very well,” she admitted.
The answer darkened Wolf’s eyes. She knew what he was thinking. She was thinking about it too.
The heart. The skull. The loosened hubcaps. Could those things have been John? The pieces fit together, making Snow’s stomach twist, but the motive still made little sense. Why would one necromancer attack another? John had always been so secretive and paranoid– terrified he’d one day be caught and painted the villain. He’d chased Snow away because he believed she was a risk to him. So why would he do something so risky as send her a bleeding heart? Why contact her in any way at all?
“And why would he check in?” Snow asked. “He’s been so careful up until this point, if the threats are him. And now he’s just… going to check in?”
“He could just be batshit crazy,” said Gregoria, a hand on her hip. She clucked her tongue. “I dunno, Miss Song. Maybe just let Wolf throw the bloke out. We don’t need his business when we have a full house.”
“We wouldn’t have a full house if we threw him out…” muttered Demi.
“Well, personally I don’t want a potential ax murderer staying in the Cinnamon room,” Gregoria shot back.
Snow ignored them. “If it is him, then maybe we’ll find out why he’s doing all this anyway. Or he’ll have some demand we can meet and then we can put this whole thing behind us,” said Snow. “Let’s… let’s just give him tonight. Wolf will watch him and Gregoria, you can watch him too, if he walks the grounds. He’s outnumbered here anyway.”
“Are you sure?” Wolf asked. It was the first thing he had said since the meeting had started.
Snow glanced up at him and hesitated again. Gregoria was probably right. It was easier to throw John out. It was safer to throw John out.
But he was a guest of the inn. He had paid. And right now, all he was doing was eating lobster. He was a guest, and Snow was the innkeeper, and she had a duty to him.
“Yes,” she answered after a beat. “Yes, I’m sure. Let’s all talk tomorrow. And until then, let’s do our jobs, okay? It’s our biggest weekend, everyone. Lots to do.”
The meeting was adjourned.

Reading Ghosts of Greywoods. It's good but the comments are driving me insane. People will extend any amount of grace to rich characters but once servants in the story dare to be less than the perfect savior archetype they're tearing them apart.
Idk man if I was part of the expendable social class I wouldn't be loyal either lmfao.
#like look. i love obsessive loyalty in fiction#but cmon. u cant get mad when they DONT do that#the whole appeal is that it's unhinged and acting against their own self interest#💋

S Y D - P O T E N T I A L C O N N E C T I O N S / P L O T S
Below the cut are multiple potential connections & plots for a character to potentially take up with SYD RIPLEY. Please be aware of any trigger warnings before proceeding, and message me if interested!
TW // Blood, Sexual Mention, Violence
🫂 Sedate Me - It’s a hot summer out in the middle of nowhere- and you meet a wayward young adult with an ugly haircut and a dumb smile. He’s green around the edges, and came from a family in Louisiana. But you’re far from there, maybe a traveler yourself, and at some basement party thrown by the grungy underground queer kids of a derelict city, you get to talking- but more importantly, you get to experiencing. Whatever drugs you both take leave you sitting on a rooftop somewhere, throwing water balloons at street lamps to see if they’ll extinguish. You learn about Syd’s fucked up life with an uppercrust witch family of assholes. High out of your minds, you both make a vow to be best fucked up friends forever, locking pinkies. And when Syd moves to Greywood, somehow or another, you end up there too. Before or after doesn’t matter. Fate just has a way of pulling y’all back together again.
👊 Fight Me/Kiss Me - You hate his shit face. He’s always saying something stupid or brazenly convinced something’s right when it’s wrong. Not only that, but he shows up to things and always just seems to be trying to get a word in. You don’t fully notice the loneliness there, the way Syd tries to make friends. But you revel in arguing with him- and he relishes in it right back. Drinks at the bar turns into rolling eyes and pushes and shoves, until you’re both out in the parking lot. Until he’s under you breathing heavy and the stale beer emanating from your breath has him gripping your jacket and tugging you in. You both fuck and fight like it’s your job, and you’re not sure which you enjoy more.
💭 Miss Me - You’re a similar age to the one Ripley ‘daughter’ and you get along swimmingly. You both live out in Louisiana and you often meet up with the Ripley kids when they actually go outside. The youngest is rebellious and excitable, and even as a preteen, the Ripley ‘daughter’ starts to go by Syd. You two go off into the woods and hunt frogs. You see how deep into the mud you can go without sinking like a dead gator, and you go searching for elusive ‘mystery fish’, a favorite game of Syd’s. You’re kindred spirits, made of muck and algae and the smell of wet bark. Syd’s cooler brother Chet always calls you both ‘the little swamp monsters’. In high school Syd asks you to help cut his hair, and you steal his older brother’s car and go looking for ghosts. But Syd ran off on his 16th birthday, and maybe you’ve texted and FaceTimed, but it’s not the same... until Syd shows up in Greywood, a grimy werewolf with a chip on his shoulder. How do you both restart your old friendship? Is it tough, or does it feel like no time has passed?
👋 Introduce Me - You are a werewolf, and regardless of how long you’ve been that way, you are impressive to Syd. Syd, who grew up figuring out his life and only having a few friends, only to lose them all when he ran away to Greywood. He’s spent his life driving around not really having a place to call home... and now he’s here, a werewolf, and barely understands what it means to have a ‘pack’. He needs help... and you can feel it. He’s desperate for some kind of connection but often gets into fights instead. You think he might need to be taken under someone’s wing. Maybe he needs help being introduced to the pack, to the places they go. Even just being filled in on what’s been going on around Greywood from someone who gets it. Syd is desperate to belong but doesn’t know how to make that shown- and maybe you see that, just a little bit. He’s standoffish at first, but finds you comforting and helpful. He may even see you as a form of guidance or a close friend.
🏥 Help Me - You are someone in a car at night. It’s so dark out and your high-beams are on, and the radio is turned up. For some reason it’s slow & sad songs tonight, and you’re eager to get home. Roy Orbison croons. ‘I was alright, for a while, I could smile for a while. Then I saw you last night, you held my hand so tight, when you stopped to say ‘hello’.’ The next second, you see a small man tripping out of the woods and right onto the street. He’s bloody and his clothing is torn and his eyes are wide. He’s bruised up and terrified... and against the fear screaming in the back of your head, you help him into your car. His name is Syd, and he flops back into your passenger seat after you’ve asked him if he’s alright. He’s out of it and mumbling something about a giant hairy beast. He’s trying not to bleed on your car’s interior. He’s silent for a second and laughs weakly. ‘Shit, is that- this is one of my favorite songs.’ From there on, you start to talk carefully. He’s been attacked by a werewolf, and he’s bleeding- a lot. Over the course of a few days, you help clean him up and learn about Syd’s life, traveling place to place. You finally send him on his way. But when you end up in Greywood for whatever reason, you see him again, looking nothing like the scared, shaken man you met less than a year ago.
