there was rustling on the other line, and a deep inhale. “hello, is this y/n?”
you narrowed your eyes at the question, the voice was unfamiliar. it was deep and gravelly, with some sort of static disrupting the way it carried through your phone. “yeah, who’s this?”
“a friend of a friend,” they answered. there was a hint of smugness in their tone, teasing you with the lack of an answer. you could almost hear the way their lips parted into a smile, the curl of their lips carrying through the phone. “i was wondering what you were up to tonight.”
your curtains suddenly whooshed with a great gust of air, your gaze flickering to them for a moment. “how’d you get this number?”
“oh, come on,” they drawled. “don’t you know everything’s online nowadays?”
you frowned, was this a stupid prank call? “who is this?”
“i already told you, a friend of a friend,” the voice said, almost soothingly. it was condescending, the way he acted as if you were ridiculous for asking his name. “come on, pretty. humor me. what movie are you watching?”
you froze, your mouth becoming dry. you looked at the tv, the romantic parody carrying on in the background. “how did you know i was watching a movie?”
“lucky guess,” they said simply. the calmness in their voice only spurred on your unease. “what kind of movies do you like, y/n?”
you stayed silent, slowly standing from your couch. you eyed your surroundings with caution, the dark hallway leading to your bedroom, the cracked closet door, and the two open windows lining your wall with access to the fire escape.
“do you like scary movies?”
a realization hit you, a moment of clarity finally breaking through the fog of fear clouding your mind.
“naoya, if this is you, i swear to god i’ll kill you,” you said with sudden confidence, turning off the tv. approaching one of the windows. you brushed past the curtains and looked outside to the street, seeing nothing but a few passerbys. “i’ll have mei do it, so they’ll never find your body.”
“woah, woah,” the voice chuckled, followed by an admiring sigh. “there’s no need to compare me to that meathead you call a friend.”
“... but would it make you feel better, y/n? if i killed him?”
“you’re not fucking funny.”
“do i sound like i’m joking?” they snapped.
you swallowed, glancing around your apartment before pushing the window closed. you grit your teeth. “who are you?”
the voice tsked. “come on, y/n. you’re a smart girl, don’t try and play dumb with me.”
