I find it amazing how togashi is cishet as far as we know bc he served so much in hxh... killua is peak teen gay mess rep... pitou is peak "no longer human" nb goals... kurapika there to be the voice of the NB's whose gender is rage resent and vendetta, alluka is just weird little girl culture but make it trans, even the homophobic gays are accurate, we've all had the displeasure of dealing with hisokas illumis and poufs, we've all had to put up with the pariging couple's banter and obnoxiousness... kaito is there to make it even more diverse and show that trans people can be insufferable too also 🥺 geru and tokyarine being 😳 @ eachother but trying to keep cool and doing nothing is a very very accurate depiction of wlw... miss naoko takeuchi looked at the guy who made yyh and said "I can change him" and then really did huh

look, the person to be blamed first and foremost for the lack of skin tone variations is togashi. he draws them all with the same skin color and it's boring as fuck, to say the least.

'99 did good by fixing this and giving the main four skin color variations, but there really isn't an effort in 2011 (i don't take "a shade darker" gon and leorio seriously).

i really cringed when i saw tonpa in 2011 because hohoho we made his skin darker than the rest of them so you know he's the mini Antagonist hoho.

who else has dark skin? squala, gets killed. uvogin, gets killed. the exorcist from greed island? a plot device. geru, a character with barely any depth. the only exception is canary, but that's only because she's canonically black.

the thing is, this isn't just an issue with 2011 hxh, this is an issue of almost all anime made today, even animes that are still running, like one piece, or remakes, like the berserk movie trilogy, and it's so easy to notice this shift when you rewatch older animes, and it’s just really fucking disappointing.
