#Repost @museumofcityny (@get_repost) ・・・ The infamous Typhoid Mary, whose real name was Mary Mallon, was born on this day in 1869. She was held against her will for the last 23 years of her life on North Brother Island in the East River because she was a carrier of typhoid and had spread the disease to many of the families she had worked for as a cook. She was outraged at her confinement and refused to believe that she was infected. In a letter she wrote to her lawyer in 1909, she said, "I have been in fact a peep show for everybody... The tuberculosis men would say 'There she is, the kidnapped woman.'" 😷 Gearing up for winter teaching and sneezing season! In winter 1894, the New York Times recommended cold sufferers take syrup of squills (squill is a plant, Drimia maritime), sweet spirits of nitre (i.e. ethyl nitrite, which can bring on a blood disorder that starves cells of oxygen), and camphorated oil (not terrible unless you mix it with turpentine, as was advised).
