She was the fourth daughter of King Frederick Wilhelm I of Prussia and his wife Sophia Dorothea of Hanover. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• She grew up at the court in Berlin, where she and her siblings shared a complicated childhood as their father was both violent and erratic. However, she seems to have had it better than her eldest sister Wilhelmine, whose governess beat her almost daily. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• On 2 July (1733), Philippine Charlotte married Karl, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel. A marriage that seems to have been harmonious and that resulted in the birth of thirteen children, of which nine reached adulthood. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• As a person, Philippine Charlotte was described as subtle, highly educated and a child of the enlightenment as she loved culture and advocated science. She used these characteristics in her role as Duchess, and was a well-known intellectual in German cultural life.
