Victorian Era Fanged Four Fic Recs

So, like, my absolute comfort fic genre is that old staple that used to be such a standard, though you pretty much never see it anymore, and that makes me very sad. It's works set in the Victorian era, when the gang were all together and happily evil, William's a bebe fledgling learning the ropes, and you got this family unit/polycule that's simultaneously brutal as hell but kinda sweet and domestic. I will devour this fic, especially if the historical detailing is on point, and apparently some others wanna see this trope too so lemme spread the love and massacres.

Warning: A LOT of this fic contains noncon and torture and oodles of murders. If you want to know detailed warnings for a given piece, DM me. I'm also including some fics that are pre-Will's embrace but still Victorian and honourable mentions to a couple of Georgian era Darla/Angelus ones.

Ensemble Works

Peasantverse by Peasant - A goddamn masterpiece. The absolute foundational example of this genre. A series of works starting with William's siring (deliberately vague who did the deed itself) and going through the following years. Lots of intriguingly plotty stories, just so many, and everyone in the family gets some love. The historical detailing is absolutely wonderful, the dynamics are wonderful, worldbuilding is fantastic, with some delightful lil footnotes to give extra context to some of the historical points.

And while I'm here, a HUGE shout out of thanks to @weirdsociology-writes for reccing this fic!

BACKGROUND The first SW fic I've written in….five years! I've been noodling around very small fandoms since then. I mean like…under 20 fics total on ao3 for the main one (a Georgian film about gay dancers). And a 1980s band AU of a 1960s book series about a sixteenth-century Scottish mercenary where we call ourselves 'tiny fandom' for a reason. So it's both extraordinarily lovely to have so much engagement with this fic and also kind of alarming. To enumerate my alarm: (1) What if I haven't researched the world coffectly (see: misspelling 'caf' as 'kaf')? (2) What if my first fic for this fandom is my best and I have no other ideas to explore coherently? (3) What if I want to write more and it Grows Plot and I end up with just another perpetual WIP trailing its innards all over my ao3 dash? (4) What if I fluked out and wrote something people vibe with while in a trance, but my justification for my actions has bad vibes? However, I try not to cultivate shame, so Andor fandom, specifically Brassian fans: know that you are lovely and it's making Not Looking Down easier.

CONCEPT The fic ambushed me in a back-alley when I was still trying to work through what I did and didn't like about the show (having been immersed in Jyn/Cassian fic and Rogue One backstory when I last did SW fandom). But I knew that what I very much did like was that hug in Rix Road. I am an absolute sucker for second-fiddle characters who are just quietly waiting for an opportunity to fuck shit up on behalf of the skrunkly little creatures we call main characters. Thankless and loyal, competent and smart - not a himbo, but someone who's watching their friend get into trouble and rolling their sleeves up to wade in and help without being asked. The ones you trust to help you hide a body. Also for characters who seem…I don't know, too good to be true on the surface, but have deep reservoirs of potential for darker emotions. I could also have just said I like broad-shouldered black-haired guys who give the best hugs (Brasso. Irakli. Jerott.)

Anyway, I find the best way to explore the relationship between two characters I like is just to make them fuck. I'm being a bit flippant, but only a bit. Communication - spoken and unspoken - is key whether it's good or bad, and you can do a lot with a character's idea of themselves as well as their idea of the other person. It's a performance, it can be about getting a response, and there can be a lot of motives at work. So I wrote this fic to work out how I saw Cassian and Brasso's friendship through a long-term lens - the trust, but also the distance Cassian keeps. Brasso's concern for him, which is overlayed by his frustration at Cassian not telling him everything. Brasso going into these interactions with eyes wide open and still finding it worthwhile, because although Cassian never gives anyone everything he gives something of himself to Brasso that no one else gets. Cassian actually relying deeply on Brasso as a constant in the turbulent life he's made for himself and feeling something almost like guilt for letting himself rely on someone that much. But needing that little hit of stability too much not to keep coming back.

It's in the present continuous because I was possessed by brain worms and they insisted. I literally haven't written anything in that tense for years so…?

Well, I had to try to replicate that hug. Turning favoured scenes over and over with new words is a fun exercise. And while I am very eyes emoji at the idea of Luthen/Cassian I'm also into the idea of Cass having One Place he knows he can always go back to for safety and comfort without any sort of judgement, and that place being wherever Brasso is. Hence also the idea that, although Cassian claims it's for Brasso's safety that he won't say where he's been or who he's working for, there's also an element of Cassian preserving his bolt hole. If he keeps this relationship separate from the Rebellion then whenever the work he does becomes too much, he can always go somewhere that feels like away from the Rebellion. Which isn't exactly fair if Brasso might choose to be involved in the fight himself, were he given all the information. And is something I want to poke at properly if I can sort out the right kind of Macguffin for the plot I have in mind following up from this fic. It would encompass, in theory, Cassian moving from a state where his work for Luthen feels still like a kind of ownership/debt repayment/self-flagellation towards the kind of responsibility and service he treats it as by the time of Rogue One, where I don't think he has any kind of release valve or bolt hole or temporary place to escape/experience respite from The Cause.

All this is bound up with the idea that Brasso sees Cassian in a way many others on Ferrix don't. I think Maarva sees him, but she's too close to what she did and all the guilt and resentment around her just taking him from his home for that understanding to come without massive strings attached. And Bix, similarly, I think she understands Cassian perfectly well and she's made the conscious decision that That's Not For Her. For all the telling the series does about their previous relationship, the showing doesn't involve much pining (from my perspective), or inclination to get back together, just two people who know each other too well to put up with the other's bullshit. Brasso has that too, but with what the series gives us there's not the same kind of caveats to his understanding of Cassian. At least, that's how I see it.

Connected with 'although Cassian never gives anyone everything he gives something of himself to Brasso that no one else gets', I wanted to keep the two of them isolated from the other Ferrix survivors here. Cassian's in too vulnerable a place to face up to them all together - what's that trope, where a shapeshifter gets confused by being presented with too many things to change into? I think that would be Cass trying to maintain his armour around Bix and Bee as well - lying about the jobs he's doing and where he's been to them all together it too likely to leave him exposed. He can be selective with his information around Brasso, and he can tell when Brasso knows he's holding out and would rather he didn't, but Brasso's also not going to push too hard, because he knows that just gives Cassian an excuse to leave.

'Brasso merely nods - it's only ever just one night. The first time it happened he believed those words and afterwards, ablaze with memories of that one night, he had come to regret agreeing to it - he'd burned through the long sleepless hours between the first time and the second, convinced that he'd just learned what it was he truly wanted only to be denied any repeat of it. Then there had been a second 'just one night'. A third. Brasso had begun to understand that just one night actually meant something else when Cassian said it. It meant I trust you. I need you too much to ruin it by staying longer. I'll be back. I'll always need to come back.'

Of course, in trying to figure out how this would go as something established, I backed myself into a corner of wondering how it might have started - hence Counting on you (ugh I really wish I'd had the patience to think of better titles for these two fics). But I like the idea of seeing how this relationship came into being without ever really having been talked about, just changing bit by bit to incorporate more - as I was saying to @elwenyere, it's a ship of Theseus kind of deal, where both physically and emotionally they're scoping each other out and building on each encounter, as well as on the friendship they had anyway, but really it's just 'yes and-'ing each other without addressing their feelings directly.

I'll admit to taking a deliberately contrary stance to what I expected to be the default take on this ship - that Cassian would be more experienced, more likely to make the first move. I just prefer a dynamic in my ships where they're differently experienced and both invested in making the other feel good, so there's always a bit of a wrangle over who's initiating what. From the way Brasso meets Cassian's improvised alibi to the way he knows exactly where to find him with Maarva's message, I don't believe for one second this is a man who's shy about using his initiative. And like Cassian is, I think he's highly conscious of how people view him and his body and has learned to manipulate expectations around that - either to make himself seem less threatening or to do the opposite. It's something that's part of what they both get out of being together - no facade, Brasso doesn't need to make himself seem smaller or less threatening (he defaults to bumbling when confronted with Imperial patrols, it really takes a lot to get him swinging that brick on Rix Road) because Cass doesn't find him threatening, and Cassian doesn't need his sharp edges, or to make himself seem small in the way he does, too (I keep thinking of how those two Corpos talk about him in the bar in episode 1).

In the end, I think Cassian does believe he's not coming back. Whether because he won't last that long, or because he can't keep this reminder of life outside the dirty work of the Rebellion without the contrast hurting too much/compromising the armour he needs to do his work. And yes, a lot of this comes from pondering Cinta's attitude to her and Vel's relationship - again, if I manage to write more, expect them to be there and that to be part of it. So while it becomes clear to Brasso that Cassian thinks he's not coming back - in a different way from all the previous 'not coming backs', I think that catches Brasso off-guard. Because I think Brasso...wants to believe he would be more honest about how he feels if he really could grasp the idea of it being the last time he sees Cassian. He'd go all in if it was his last chance to do so. But without time to prepare? I think he's made too much of being the one who can let Cassian go (cf. Bix - he's always leaving) and that that's what lets him keep coming back. If you never give something a beginning how can you give it an ending?

A question I find myself confronted with regularly, 50k words in and utterly lost. Stay tuned?

I hope you will take this as a fun opportunity and not an annoyance but I was wondering if you had any book recs? I generally read fantasy and have been trying to break into Adult Lit over YA (while still liking YA and hoping to find adult novels with the same engaging settings and brisk pacing but with more advanced prose). Really liked Spinning Silver and Uprooted by Naomi Novik this year, and my favorites of your fics are Seven Suitors (obligatory), pacific rim au, and the snow queen one. I’ve never really read romance before but I’m willing to give it a try, especially if there’s other genre elements at play as well. Do you have any directions you could point me? I appreciate it!

Oh, I always love giving book recs, and thank you so much for giving me some preferences because it's so much easier to direct people when I know what they already like!

My current favorite YA author right now is Frances Hardinge, who writes truly magnificent prose and absolutely amazing worlds. If you like All That Remains, you will probably love the emotional devastation that is The Lie Tree, and a few of my other favorites are Gullstruck Island and Cuckoo Song. If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett, you also can't go wrong with her Fly By Night duology. Genevieve Valentine is another YA author I highly recommend; Mechanique is probably my favorite, but the Persona series is also top notch, and The Girls at the Kingfisher Club has a vibe that cannot be beat.

I haven't yet read Spinning Silver but Uprooted is also a fav of mine; I have a deep love of fairy tale retellings, or stories written to be like fairy tales. On that thread I definitely recommend the Winternight trilogy by Katherine Arden (I have a few quibbles with the story, but the writing is solid and the first book had me captivated for a good 3/4ths of it), The Orphan's Tales by Catherynne M Valente, plus A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth C Bunce (her Thief Errant series also lives RENT FREE in my head at all times).

Seven Suitors was fleshed out with Regency mores in mind, inspired by by historical mystery novels I read in that time period, plus some fantasy with more rigid social structure. The Crown & Court duet by Sherwood Smith is something I would consider formative for my writing in that quarter. For something actually regency set, though definitely not the same genre, I would recommend the Sebastian St Cyr series by CS Harris, which are mysteries set in Georgian London, featuring a brooding hero who starts off with an equally brooding, star-crossed actress as a lover...only to have the rug pulled out beneath him by the daughter of his father's long-standing political rival.

My scifi chops are rather thin-- I love the genre but I find lots of the deeper cuts here get too info-dumpy for me on the hard science level-- but I can definitely recommend The Expanse series by James SA Corey (as well as pretty much anything Daniel Abraham writes in the fantasy genre)

As for All That Remains, there are several extremely painful fantasy series I could recommend, because I love having my heart torn out, stamped on, and then taped back in. Guy Gavriel Kay is a great writer for that-- I suggest starting at Lions of Al-Rassan and then working your way forward through that setting by publishing date. The aforementioned Daniel Abraham also is amazing at this; The Seasons Quartet is a decades-spanning series that will truly make your tear out your hair at the end of each book. NK Jemisin is also amazing, The Broken Earth trilogy is where I would start out for intense heart-stomping.

This Georgian/Age of Sail AU is the perfect combination of Star Wars with Patrick O’Brien’s Aubrey-Maturin series/C. S. Forester’s Hornblower series vibes, and the perfect balance of action, humor, FEELS, and ride-or-die bestieism.

The Limpet AU by Frodogenic

This is Original Trilogy Canonverse AU comedy/family feels goodness, and this series made me look crazy with how much I was cackling while reading it; I mean, you have Skywalker Family Feels, Darth (Grand)Dadakin, and Admiral Piett is DONE With Life.

You will have emotions in some parts, and want to bust a gut laughing in others; I know I did.

Wastelands by Mistress_Siana

Leia crash lands on a planet, and with danger imminent, she must rely on a certain Force Ghost to help her make her shuttle spaceworthy once more.

Her reconciliation with Anakin is ambiguous here, but they come to an understanding of sorts.

Wish I Could Be by @melanoradrood

This actually should also be in the category of fics that made me cry, because the first time I read this, it honestly made me cry.

This is one of the best Dramione fics I have EVER read, and every moment just hits RIGHT.

It’s a Fourth Year canon compliant fic, and it’s just… Lord, I cannot recommend this enough.

I've only recently started getting into jonsa (like, looked at their ao3 tag first time this week recently). What fics should I read? I liked pining. Lots and lots and lots of pining, especially if it's by Jon, although mutual is fine too.

Jaime x Brienne Fic Recs: Spotlight Saturday #4

This is the fourth of my Spotlight Saturday fic rec series for 2020 (more on my 2020 plan here). Spotlight Saturdays will feature 1-2 stories written post-Season 8 of Game of Thrones.

TeamGwenee has been pushing out one solid fic after another for years, with a variety of imaginative premises. Their best fics are, in my opinion, their historical AUs (among their best known are the Regency AU Evenfall Hall and the Georgian AU Rough Wooings), not least because of their commitment to the appropriate style, tone, and vocabulary. Each story is clearly well-researched, but never feels tedious. I was initially going to do a Fic Back Friday featuring my go-to for under-appreciated fic in this fandom: My Fall, a historical witchcraft AU very successfully written in first person POV. However, I just ploughed through this one yesterday and absolutely loved it:

He wouldn’t be Jaime otherwise.” She gathered the papers and rose briskly. “I will declare for my Uncle Stannis, and on his arrival to King’s Landing I shall sail for the Red Keep immediately to bend the knee before the realm.” She closed her eyes and gritted her teeth, preparing herself for Varys’s protests. “That done, I will plead for mercy for Uncle Renly and the Lannisters.”

This fic reimagines Westerosi politics through the lens of the Tudors (as in the English royal house, not the TV show about King Henry VIII), which as you can imagine, isn’t a huge stretch at all. Brienne, the Marchioness of Tarth, is placed in the line of succession for the throne towards the start of the story. Prior to that, she was already being raised alongside Jaime, since Tywin was appointed her Governor after her father’s death. We then follow how the struggle for power between the Baratheon brothers has repercussions for Brienne as well as Jaime. A significant amount of plot is covered in an efficient yet fulfilling way, and the ending especially made me gasp with delight – I suppose I should have seen it coming based on the history of the Tudors, but it was still surprising, empowering, and romantic. (I did write to someone that my ovaries exploded.)

Yuletide Letter 2020

Dear Holiday Hero,

It’s a weird Yuletide this year. Normally, the arrival of Yuletide is a bittersweet marker of the passage of time, but this year, it’s a sign that 2020 can only abuse us for so much longer before it goes away. I’m certain that the story you write for me will be one of the bright spots of this year! I’m a gold star Yuletide participant: I’ve signed up every year, and written at least one story every year, since the challenge began. That’s great news for you, because over the years, I’ve learned that the best Yuletide gifts are the ones that weren’t quite what I had expected, and also that gifts are satisfying and joyful for me as long as it’s clear that the author put effort and care into them. Basically, as long as you avoid my Do Not Wants and run spell check, I’m going to be over the moon with excitement at whatever you write for me.

My biggest non-obvious DNW is babyfic. No pregnancy, no babies, no little kids. I’m also a grumpy Jew, so I’d prefer not to receive stories with strong Christmas themes. The “five things” format is not my favorite. Please don’t center your story around ships that I did not ask for.

But I like a lot more things than I dislike! Normally, I would be reading my Yuletide gift on the way to my annual family dim sum lunch, but I’m pretty sure that’s canceled this year. So give me something I will laugh out loud at while waiting for the takeout to arrive, or just escape into. Porn is optional, obviously, but: oral sex, eroticized hands, exhibitionism, shower sex, gender play. I like experimental structures and styles, as well as more standard ones, and I am fine with whatever POV and tense you choose. If you are the kind of person who does multimedia or interactive fiction, or just clever footnotes, I am all for that. All of my requests this year have strong and distinct voices, and I would love to receive a story that embraces their sound and feel. I like stories that stick close to canon or present interesting “what if” canon divergences, and I also like superhero and In Space AUs.

I tend to write the fic I want to see in the world, so you’ll get a good sense of me by browsing my AO3 account. My AO3 bookmarks are a recs list, and therefore a great way to see what kinds of fic appeal to me and make me happy.

And Then We Danced (2019): Merab, Irakli

I am deeply invested in making sure that these two are going to be all right. I'd prefer for them to be all right together, although genfic that focuses on a happy or hopeful future for one or both of them would work for me, too. I'm fine with a little canon-typical violence and homophobia here, as long as it's something they overcome and not the focal point of the story. Maybe they run away together shortly after the events in the movie. Maybe they reconnect years later and realize they're still in love. Maybe they're living in the same real-world trash fire we are, and reach out in the midst of the pandemic and the impending war in Armenia. Maybe they exist in a happy fanfic fluff bubble where they cook each other delicious Georgian food and have sex in the woods. Maybe it's an AU, and they meet on a spaceship 500 years in the future. Maybe it's just an extended description of the two of them dancing together beautifully.

DNW: Stories centered around pregnancy, babies, or raising children. Strong Christmas/winter holiday themes. Featured or endgame romantic/sexual relationships other than Merab/Irakli.  Extensive, graphic descriptions of homophobic violence. Character death or serious, lasting physical harm to requested characters.

Doom Patrol (TV): Danny the Street, Maura Lee Karupt | Agent Wilson

Danny and Maura, and the episodes that feature them, are a glitter ball of hope in a dark time. I'd love to read stories about what happens within Danny: adventures or problems that occur, or explorations of the traditions and culture that develop among the Dannyzens. If you want to go in a romantic or sexy direction with this, I'm up for it, not least to see how you'd do it. Danny loves everyone, but they do seem to have a special place in their heart for Maura, which I would enjoy seeing explored. Both Danny and Maura represent queer diversity in ways we don't often see on TV - play with that and celebrate it in whatever way you wish. I also love how heroic and fundamentally good both characters are, in quirky ways that suit their abilities, so I'd enjoy seeing them face and defeat a villain in a unique way. A self-contained story centered around the Dannyzens would be great, but feel free to bring in the main Doom Patrol crew if you want - I'm especially interested in Danny's relationships with Larry and Dorothy, if that's a direction you want to go in.

DNW: Stories centered around pregnancy, babies, or raising children. Strong Christmas/winter holiday themes. Stories where transphobic or queerphobic violence is a central plot point or threat to the requested characters. Direct engagement with real-world political events or the COVID-19 pandemic (metaphors are fine). Character death or non-canonical serious physical harm to requested characters.

Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist: Mo

I want to know so much more about Mo. Get her out of her sassy best friend rut and put her in the limelight, please! The glimpses of her relationship with faith and her church were fascinating, and I'd love to know how that grows and changes. If you want to go in a romantic direction, I'd be happy with Mo/Eddie, Mo/Simon, or Mo/Zoey, and I'd be excited to read anything that celebrates her fat, Black, genderfluid body. I'd also enjoy reading the AU where she, and not Zoey, has the heart song superpower. Or an In Space AU. Or a musical.

@qserasera​ tagged me to list out ten songs i’ve been listening to lately, so here’s my list together with too much commentary because I’m just Like That.

Departures by Joe Hisaishi (from the movie Departures)  I've already tag-yelled about Merry-Go-Round of Life so have a non-Ghibli song (PS: Departures is an excellent movie. It's about death and encoffinment, but it is very worth watching). While you're at it, just go listen to everything on Joe Hisaishi's channel. Or you could just listen to his two hour Studio Ghibli concert. 

Strawberry Swing by Coldplay According to this article, this song is one of the top 10 most relaxing songs in the world. I feel calm listening to it. Plus, it's Coldplay. And the music video is incredible. 

Wandering in the Afternoon Sunlight by Takeharu Ishimoto (FF7: Crisis Core OST)  While the world is playing Animal Crossing or looking forward to the FF7 Remake, I (who has neither a Switch or a PS4) busted out my 10-year-old PSP and started replaying Crisis Core. Imagine yourself wandering the plains exploring while you listen to this song (from the isolated room you're currently stuck in!) 

Exogenesis Symphony Part 3 Redemption by Muse  I also recommend that you watch Evgenia Medvedeva's gorgeous figure skating Short Program to this song. I wrote a lot of fics to this song last year.

Counterattack Mankind by Hiroyuki Sawano (Shingeki no Kyojin OST) I haven't kept up with this series since season 1 but this song was a rec for good music to work out to. Also it's the opening music to the No Regrets OVA (aka Levi and Erwin's first meeting) so... 

In The End by Tommee Profitt ft Fluerie & Jung Youth (Linkin Park cover) The reason I know of this cover? Purely because of the Georgian ice dance team of Maria Kazakova/Georgy Reviya, so please watch their freaking epic Free Dance. They. Are. Incredible (I am gutted they only got silver at Junior Worlds).

Into the Unknown by Idina Menzel & Panic! at the Disco (fanmade mashup)  Frozen 2's soundtrack isn't as memorable as Frozen’s but this song really grew on me the more I listened to it. And then to have Idina and Brendon's vocals in one mashup together? Godly.  

Owarihajimari (Remix) by SAWA (The World Ends With You, Live Remix)  This was the song that Squeenix put up to troll us when they did a seven day countdown back in 2012. The entire fandom freaked out because we thought it would be a sequel announcement, but it ended up being just a mobile app port............. anyway, it gave us a bunch of remixes and I love this one because it has groovy beats.

Deliver Us by Hans Zimmer (Prince of Egypt OST)  This song kept coming up on my playlist and it's stuck in my head now so... anyway the emotions this evokes feel quite apt for the state of our world right now.

Romeo and Cinderella by Hatsune Miku  I play this mobile game (Tower of Saviors) which has a lot of crossover events with Japanese anime/series, including a Vocaloid one last year. I run a Miku-led main deck and this song plays every time the team maxes out their stats in battle so I associate it with positive things (aka, like knowing that I’m gonna flatten all the bosses).
