On this day in history, 8th of June 1492, Elizabeth Woodville, queen consort of Edward IV, died at Bermondsey Abbey aged about 55.
The cause of her death is not known, it is commonly suggested however that her health was failing in the last year since she made her will on the 10th of April 1492.  Like her predecessor Margaret of Anjou, Elizabeth apparently had little of value to leave at her death.
“ IN Dei nomine, Amen. The xth daie of Aprill, the yere of our Lord Gode Mcccclxxxxii. I Elisabeth by the grace of God Quene of England, late wif to the most victoroiuse Prince of blessed memorie Edward the Fourth, being of hole mynde, seying the worlde so traunsitorie, and no creature certayne whanne they shall departe frome hence, havyng Almyghty Gode fressh in mynde, in whome is all mercy and grace, bequeath my sowle into his handes, beseechyng him, of the same mercy, to accept it graciously, and oure blessed Lady Quene of comforte, and all the holy company of hevyn, to be good meanes for me. It’m, I bequeith my body to be buried with the bodie of my Lord at Windessore, according to the will of my saide Lorde and myne, without pompes entreing or costlie expensis donne thereabought. It’m, where I have no wordely goodes to do the Quene’s Grace, my derest doughter, a pleaser with, nether to reward any of my children, according to my hart and mynde, I besech Almyghty Gode to blisse here Grace, with all her noble issue, and with as good hart and mynde as is to me possible, I geve her Grace my blessing, and all the forsaide my children. It’m, I will that suche smale stufe and goodes that I have be disposed truly in the contentac’on of my dettes and for the helth of my sowle, as farre as they will extende. It’m, yf any of my bloode wille any of my saide stufe or goodes to me perteyning, I will that they have the prefermente before any other. And of this my present testament I make and ordeyne myne Executores, that is to sey, John Ingilby, Priour of the Chartour-house of Shene, William Sutton and Thomas Brente, Doctors. And I besech my said derest doughter, the Queue’s grace, and my sone Thomas, Marques Dorsett, to putte there good willes and help for the performans of this my testamente. In witnesse wherof, to this my present testament I have sett my seale, these witnesses, John Abbot of the monastry of Sainte Saviour of Bermondefley, and Benedictus Cun, Doctor of Fyfyk. Yeven the day and yere above said.”
It was not unusual for contemporaries to request a ‘simple’ funeral in the sure knowledge that their families would bury them with appropriate ceremony, but Elizabeth would have known that a deceased’s estate bore the cost of this and that queenly obsequies were beyond her means. King Henry could have relented sufficiently to make a dignified ending possible, but the evidence is that everything was done ‘on the cheap’…her body was placed in a wooden coffin, and taken by boat from Bermondsey to St George’s Chapel, Windsor, two days later. It was received there by a single priest and a clerk (‘prevely’ – privately or secretly – at eleven at night), and interred almost immediately, without, apparently, the dean and canons being present.
Her son the Marquis of Dorset, his half-sisters Anne, Katherine and Bridget, and some other family members reached Windsor on the following Tuesday and Wednesday, and that night the Bishop of Rochester conducted the service of Dirige, the Office of the Dead. Elizabeth’s two eldest daughters did not attend – Elizabeth of York was heavily pregnant while Cecily was represented by her husband Lord Welles, the king’s uncle – and the others present were almost all relatives of Edward IV or the Woodvilles. One of the heralds was shocked by the meanness of the arrangements, remarking that ‘there was nothing done solemnly for her saving a low hearse such as they use for the common people with four wooden candlesticks about it’. There was, he adds, ‘never a new torch, but old torches, nor poor man in black gown or hood, but upon [approximately] a dozen divers old men holding old torches and torch ends’. Dorset paid the ‘dole’ (the customary distribution of money to the needy) and gave forty shillings to the heralds, presumably out of his own pocket.
Elizabeth as she requested was laid to rest beside Edward IV at St George’s Chapel, Windsor.
Not only was Elizabeth Woodville the first commoner in centuries to become Queen of England, she was also the mother of the two princes in the Tower, the sister-in-law to Richard III, the grandmother of Henry VIII (and his older brother, Arthur to whom she stood as godmother), the great-grandmother of Mary I and Elizabeth I, and the great-grandmother to two beheaded queens, Mary, Queen of Scots and Lady Jane Grey. As grandmother to Henry VIII’s older sister Margaret, who wed the King of Scotland, Elizabeth Woodville’s blood infused the stuart line, and eventually wended it’s way through the Hanovers down to the current ruling family of England, the Windsors.

Event Report: Rock and Shock 2018
Tumblr media
The Rock and Shock horror convention and concert series invaded the DCU Center and The Palladium in Worcester, MA last weekend, October 12-14. This year marked the 15th annual event, boasting a decade and a half of the biggest names in horror movies and alternative music descending upon New England every Halloween season.
I had the honor of hosting two panels on Friday night. The first featured New England Horror Writers members Jack Haringa, Rob Smales, Trisha Wooldridge, and Steve Van Samson. Their discussions of their writing careers, their approach, and their experiences with small press provided invaluable insight to the aspiring writers in the audience. For my second panel I was joined by Dawn of the Dead with stars Scott Reiniger and Gaylen Ross to celebrate the film's 40th anniversary. The old friends reflected on the landmark zombie movie and working with the late, great George A. Romero.
Tumblr media
Saturday kicked off with a panel with the charismatic Ted Raimi (Evil Dead II). He opened with what was essentially a 10-minute standup routine about the Worcester/Boston area before answering questions. Fittingly, he even received a special microphone so he could stand up to address the crowd rather than sit behind the table. The actor spoke highly of Deadwax, the Shudder original series on which he recently worked, stating that he didn't want it to end. He also revealed that Lunatics: A Love Story, the 1991 comedy/romance film in which he stars, is finally coming to DVD for the first time soon.
Raimi's panel was followed by an equally entertaining but entirely different session with author Joe Knetter. It was billed as a reading from I, Survivor, the new Victor Crowley tie-in novel that he co-wrote with filmmaker Adam Green, but he only read a brief passage. The rest of the time was filled by Knetter - who admitted he was “floating on an edible” - musing from collaborating with Green to playing the killer in the upcoming Hanukkah alongside horror icons Sid Haig, Caroline Williams, and P.J. Soles. His raunchy and self-deprecating humor extended to his longtime girlfriend, indie scream queen Sarah French, who watched from the audience. It was a unique and hilarious experience.
Tumblr media
Later in the day, Malcolm McDowell took the stage to answer fan questions. He discussed his seminal roles in Stanley Kubrick's A Clockwork Orange and Rob Zombie's Halloween films. (After admitting that he his still never seen John Carpenter's original Halloween, a fan gifted him with a VHS copy the next day.) The gregarious Brit spoke about some of his less publicized performances as well, including the recent fun he had doing Lunchables commercials. "Thank God they paid me a shit load of money," he mused.
On Sunday, Bill Moseley (The Devil’s Rejects), Andrew Divoff (Wishmaster),and R.A. Mihailoff (Leatherface: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre III) took over the panel room to discuss their legacies as icons of horror in a Q&A, which you can watch in its entirety here. Moseley was unfortunately unable to disclose any details on Rob Zombie’s Three From Hell, but it was a fun chat nonetheless. Divoff shared a particularly enlightening story about being an action figure.
Tumblr media
For various reasons, several beloved Rock and Shock traditions were absent this year: the costume contest, the film festival, and the supergroup cover band The Rocking Dead. I hope to see them all reinstated in the future, but Sunday saw the launch of a new favorite tradition: a children's costume contest, hosted by Fiona's Fright Shoppe. A gaggle of adorable children dressed as killers from movies they've (hopefully) never seen proudly showed off their cosplay. Chucky took home first prize, with Dani from Hocus Pocus and IT's Pennywise placing second and third, respectively. It was truly heartwarming.
Next door at The Palladium, concerts took place throughout the weekend, beginning with a sold-out kick-off show from Ice Nine Kills on Thursday. Horrorcore hip-hop duo Twiztid headlined on Friday. Saturday offered a night of Swedish/Finnish metal featuring Amorphis, Dark Tranquility, and Wintersun. Two different shows took place on Sunday: downstairs was headlined by heavy metal titans Trivium, while hardcore stalwarts Terror brought the mosh upstairs.
Tumblr media
In addition to the aforementioned names, other celebrity guests who met with fans throughout the weekend included Linda Blair (The Exorcist), making her Rock and Shock debut, along with Derek Mears (Friday the 13th), James Marshall (Twin Peaks), Dana Ashbrook (Twin Peaks), Jeremy Davies (Justified), William Forsythe (The Devil's Rejects), and Kelli Maroney (Chopping Mall), among others.
Per usual, the vendor room was loaded with horror DVDs, Blu-rays, toys, shirts, collectibles, artwork, handmade goods, tattoo artists, and more, but it was laid out differently this year. The floor space itself was smaller, but the configuration of the booths made it feel just as full. In addition the regulars, I was happy to find quite a few new faces and products among the vendors. I hope to see the Rock and Shock family to continue to grow in future years.

And Band / The Perfect Stangers, Split 7″, 1982 (Reissue)
Tumblr media
If you’re looking for the apotheosis of New Zealand vinyl obscurity, And Band/Perfect Strangers’ Self-titled split 7” is a contender for the title. Originally released in 1982 in a two-hundred-copy run, it’s doubtful many of these EPs made it out of the South Island, let alone New Zealand. The And Band was essentially a continuation of Wellington’s the Spies whose 2014 posthumous release, The Battle of Bosworth Terrace, on Siltbreeze is a must have. The And Band was comprised of George D. Henderson (Spies and later of the Puddle) and his partner Susan Ellis (Spies), Richard Sedger (Spies), and Mark Thomas (Spies). If you’re familiar with The Battle of Bosworth Terrace LP, you’re well prepared for the And Band’s eclectic style. Some songs are heavy on organ with sing-speak vocals; different members of the band sing lead.
Perfect Strangers was comprised of Bill Vosburgh, painter/sculptor Helm Ruifrok, Richard Uti and, from what I gather, Mark Thomas on vocals. Perfect Strangers should appeal to fans of Tuxedomoon and DNA; if the incidental music found on Red Krayola’s Parable of Arable Land sounds like music to you, then you have the catholic tastes necessary to appreciate their side of the 7”. According to George Henderson, the And Band and Perfect Strangers found themselves on the outs with Christchurch’s few club promoters, so daytime and art gallery shows became the norm. Nevertheless, these limited appearances—and Self-titled split 7” (the only time both bands appeared on vinyl)—had their impact.
Stuart Page (aka, Stu Kawowski) of the Axemen/Above Ground in 2013:
Ryan Leach: What early Christchurch punk bands were you interested in?
Stu: When the punk thing hit, bands like The Enemy would come to Christchurch. They’d play a club on Mollet Street that was run by a guy called Al Park who is still around, playing music and promoting. Bill Direen’s band Vacuum would be playing. Scorched Earth Policy and The Gordons as well. Two really important bands to The Axemen were Perfect Strangers and The And Band.
Ryan: The Christchurch Rotunda gig.
Stu: That gig and the Art Centre gig. They were both pivotal shows to quite a few people—certainly to me and Steve (McCabe) and Pat Faigan from The Picnic Boys and Say Yes to Apes. We went, “Holy shit! We can do that!”
2017’s reissue of this obscure Christchurch gem is limited to 284 copies; sleeve layout was done by Stuart Page and includes wonderful liner notes from George D. Henderson and Patrick Faigan (Say Yes to Apes, Axel Grinders, etc.). Both sides play at 33 1/3 RPM.
-Ryan Leach
Sue Smales remembers the late Mark Thomas on the Axemen’s Y2K blog: https://theaxemen.org/2010/03/20/mark-thomas-aka-sharkface/
Perfect Strangers were raw—as seen on Stuart Page’s Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLu8Tvp-Z0w

Read-in-2016 Masterlist
This is not my personal best year for number of books read. (That was last year.) I read 68 books for the first time, and reread 12. But I did read more non-fiction and non-genre books than I usually do, and I enjoyed most of what I read, and I got through 2/3 of the Riverside Chaucer, so I’m counting this year as a win.

11 Important Metrics to Measure Your Electronic mail Marketing campaign's ROI
Electronic mail advertising is commonly praised for its excessive return on funding, so it’s no shock that so many manufacturers focus their consideration on this channel. Nevertheless, like some other advertising effort, it’s necessary to have a strong course of in place for measuring e-mail success.
That will help you higher perceive the outcomes your e-mail campaigns are producing, we requested a gaggle of Younger Entrepreneur Council members the next query:
Q. What’s one of the simplest ways for small companies to find out the return on funding on an e-mail marketing campaign?
1. Lifetime worth of the client
As a enterprise, it’s good to know the lifetime worth (LTV) of your clients. As soon as that is established you’ll be able to construct your metric for ROI of an e-mail marketing campaign. Understanding the LTV of your clients is extraordinarily necessary, not simply in e-mail, however in your entire advertising campaigns to be sure to are getting the ROI vital to verify success. —Chris George, Subscription Commerce Affiliation (SUBTA)
2. Click on-through price
If your purpose is to get subscribers to click on on your emails to take them to your newest weblog submit or touchdown web page, then you definitely wish to monitor your click-through price. To calculate this you’re taking the whole clicks and divide it by whole emails delivered. The upper the click-through price, the higher. —Syed Balkhi, WPBeginner
3. Conversions
Our purpose when sending emails to our shoppers is that they take clear motion, corresponding to clicking “Study Extra” or “Purchase Now.” We are able to inform how efficient our communication has been by evaluating these charges to our prior campaigns. —Rachel Beider, Therapeutic massage Outpost
  4. Actions after opening
The truth is there’s no singular metric that determines the ROI of an e-mail marketing campaign. There’s merely an excessive amount of selection between completely different corporations and industries. And inside an organization, there may be completely different goals behind every e-mail marketing campaign. There’s one normal rule although: The open price doesn’t imply something. You want to dive deeper and take a look at conversions, CTRs, and unsubscribe charges. —Thomas Smale, FE Worldwide
5. Unsubscribe charges
Measure the success of your marketing campaign by taking a look at unsubscribe and person motion charges, and search for patterns. For example, in case you had a report variety of customers unsubscribe after you despatched a specific marketing campaign, you clearly want to vary the tone of the following one you ship. If individuals are unsubscribing, they didn’t assume your info supplied any worth. —Blair Thomas, eMerchantBroker
6. Alignment of engagement metrics
The one factor you wish to take a look at is the quantity of individuals participating with the e-mail. I’ve seen small companies which have excessive open charges, however when it comes right down to the clicks and conversions, it’s practically zero. You probably have an efficient e-mail marketing campaign, all of those numbers are normally aligned and there isn’t a giant hole between them. This is the reason you will need to take a look at quantity and conversion. —Sweta Patel, Silicon Valley Startup Advertising
7. Accomplished outcomes
To get essentially the most ROI for your e-mail marketing campaign, you wish to learn how many individuals accomplished the end result you needed them to. The end result will differ relying on the marketing campaign. For instance, in case you are emailing to seek out out why clients canceled, you wish to monitor the response price. Or in case you’re making an attempt to promote them one thing, that may entail monitoring income. —Jared Atchison, WPForms
Different Articles From AllBusiness.com:
8. Income technology
Targets might range from shopper to shopper and marketing campaign to marketing campaign, however one factor that’s common is how a lot cash a marketing campaign brings in. Specializing in income from new shopper acquisition is a key metric as a result of most individuals simply take a look at open charges and click-through charges. It isn’t sufficient for them to simply open your e-mail and click on a hyperlink—it must be tied to income and tracked during to the sale. —Joel Mathew, Fortress Consulting
9. Acquisition prices versus income
The primary issue that ought to be tracked is the price of acquisition when including new subscribers to your mailing checklist. The following issue is the quantity of income generated per sale. After that, the remaining components are the conversion price of subscribers to gross sales and the variety of gross sales for every transformed buyer. Placing all of those components collectively will present a transparent imaginative and prescient of your ROI. —Bryce Welker, CPA Examination Man
10. Well being and deliverability
It’s necessary to contemplate components like checklist well being and deliverability, not simply direct engagement and per-campaign success. These are the macro developments that can drive long-term success. It’s nice if a specific marketing campaign drives engagement and conversions, but when that comes at the price of alienating giant parts of your subscriber base, chances are you’ll be slowly killing your golden goose. —Ryan D. Matzner, Fueled
11. Whichever metric displays your marketing campaign purpose
The metric of success will solely range by the purpose. For instance, if you’d like extra publicity, it’s best to use the variety of new subscribers or open charges; if you wish to promote items, monitor site visitors funnels main from promo emails to checkout pages. Regulate your metric of success to match your objectives for the marketing campaign. —Zev Herman, Superior Lighting

It was not unusual for contemporaries to request a ‘simple’ funeral in the sure knowledge that their families would bury them with appropriate ceremony, but Elizabeth would have known that a deceased’s estate bore the cost of this and that queenly obsequies were beyond her means. King Henry could have relented sufficiently to make a dignified ending possible, but the evidence is that everything was done ‘on the cheap’...her body was placed in a wooden coffin, and taken by boat from Bermondsey to St George’s Chapel, Windsor, two days later.
