Modern Day AU Starter
Anne Lister stood calmly in the doorway of the train carriage. She watched, only occasionally focussing, as the green rolling hills of the countryside flew past the window.
It hadn’t been long she’d been back on shore and yet this seemed completely different now returning to her hometown. Shore leave for a family emergency was something no officer wanted and yet she couldn’t help but feel a small pang of excitement to be going home after so many months at sea. As much as Anne hated to admit it, she did miss the old place and the people in it. She adjusted the strap on her navy issued burgen back pack and rolled her beret between her hands as the familiarity started to come to her.
There, perched in the very distance and surrounded my lust fields and great woods was her aunts estate with its tourist attractions and small museum.
Anne stepped off the train and onto the platform of Yorkshire stone and set off walking towards the outskirts of town in her heavy, well polished black boots and adjusting her beret so it sat just right on her.

Who Do You Love
She was expecting Anne. She’d gotten up early, and made a rare fuss about her hair and which dress she’d like to wear. Usually, she could get impatient with the process of setting her hair just so, but today she wanted to look her best. Anne Lister was coming over. Anne, whom she was fairly certain she was in love with, if such a thing was even possible under God’s law. She’d been waiting and working on her cross stitch when James came. She’d looked up at him eagerly, only to find that it was the Reverent Ainsworth who had come for a visit. She told James she felt unwell, and could receive no one, when the man came walking right into the room. Came right up to her with that pandering look on his face as he took her hands. His grip was tight, his face intent and that disturbing shade of pinkish that worried her. He’d insisted on some sort of conversation, though she continued to call infirm and ask him to go. She’d even stood to invite him out, but he’d only cornered her. He’d had her up against the corner, drawing a finger down the side of her cheek. At this same time James was most thankfully letting Anne Lister into the house. There was no way he was going up against a Reverend. “Reverend, Reverend- I find this not to be seemly at all.” she insisted, but he countered with something from the Great Book she did not really recognize. Then he had her up against the wall, pressing a kiss upon her. She let a shriek go right against his lips, and struggled where he held her against the wall.

Ann was positively mad with boredom. Her sister had asked 'won't you come down for a walk by the water with me?' About a thousand times in the past hour, and she had flatly declined, saying all sorts of things: no, I don't feel well. My head hurts. Not while I'm in the middle of this book. Oh, but this watercolor sketch I'm in the middle of.
Truly, it was just because she was already so tired of their company, and she missed her good friend Ms. Lister very dearly. She had never known anyone in her life to be both so strange and so interesting all at once! She dressed so oddly. Ann found it charming. She talked with such boldness, such confidence! It made Ann want to never stop listening to the sound of her voice. She wa so captivating. So charming. God, she missed her! The air here was nice, the water agreeable, the weather fair. But the people, her family (oh! She was ashamed to think it!) were incredibly dull.
At last, after two more hours of pestering, she agreed to go out for a walk. Her sister talked on and on about North, about Scotland. About the babies and the weather and any manner of nonsense. She would say, don't you like it, Ann? Isn't it lovely, Ann? And before Ann could say yes or no or even hazard a maybe, she had gone barreling on into some other subject without stopping-- like a train on its course to the Orient, or a some chattering bird. Was it annoying? No! She shouldn't think it. It was dreadfully rude. What was she saying? Something, to be sure. Oh! She had asked a question. Ann tried to offer a smile, a 'yes, yes of course'. Her sister gave her a strange look and perhaps asked if she was alright. Ann didn't answer. She stared out at the water.
Her eyes traveled down to the walk, to the people there. The men in their smartly upholstered coats and the women, especially, in their pretty feathered hats or their gowns. They were beautiful, she thought. Like a painting by Renoir.
Her sister was going on about family news. Shut up, Ann wanted to say. Be quiet and leave me to paint. Her sister asked:
"Oh, do you see that bird, down by the bench? Isn't he funny?"
Ann longed for rescue, perfectly wretched. She walked quietly along the bank, and didn't answer.
What A Thing It Is To Be Alive @the-lady-oneill
Anne exhaled through her nose as she continued her timely paced jaunt to the Inn at the end of the road.
Really, most handsome cab drivers were utter idiots and buffoons. She could’ve gotten them there ages ago if he had only just taken the detour she had suggested. But no, of course he hadn’t had he? She was, after all, at the end of the day, and sometimes much to her chagrin, a Woman. God forbid a man open his ears to the words of them. Jesus fucking Christ.
She rolled her eyes as she entered the small, cozy, Tudor-style inn in Eskdale before pausing to close her eyes as she took a moment to inhale the utter history of the place. That had housed men and women and children through war after war, conquest upon conquest.
Dear god, what it a thing it was to be alive?
That thought, of course, lead her own to dwell on Miss Ann Walker. She knew for a fact that the family she was staying with was just a few houses down. Now then, how should she surprise her. Hmm? Better wash up first. She did have every intention of flirting with the girl that evening. Who knows, maybe she’s even get a grubble?

I came close to committing suicide last night, my mom and I had gotten into a fight and I felt like I had no worth. The only thing that stopped me was my fear for what would happen to my brother. I hadn’t been online at all in a couple days and I got on this morning super depressed and exhausted because I only slept two hours last to find these two asks in my inbox with the message above and I almost cried; I had been continuing to contemplate suicide and self-harm and this message... changed everything. I felt loved. You guys with those simple words made me want to stay alive again, you made my day and gave me hope for what is to come. So the reason why I am doing this is to share that love and maybe save a life in the same way you guys saved mine. And please, if you ever have suicidal/thoughts of self-harm, don’t do what I did. Talk to somebody. Get help.

Brave
There was a hubbuloo downstairs. She heard raised voices of concern. Ann was already putting aside her cross stitch when someone called for her with such a tone she knew something awful had happened. The boy met her half way up the stairs, his face wild. “It’s Miss Lister, Ma’am! She’s hurt.” The young man had to back up quickly as she surged forth, following the voices to the kitchen. There were terrible marks on Anne’s face. A tear at her sleeve, and she was holding herself with pain. Ann’s heart clutched. She knew, she knew her love was vulnerable to such attacks, and she hated it so. Not caring who was watching, she ran to her and barely touched her face, just wanting to hold her gaze. “Oh, Anne! You’re hurt!”

Watching someone crumple in front of her was hard for Anne to see. Tentatively she placed a hand on the other woman’s back with a supportive circular motion.
“It’s okay.” She said as she tried to keep the smirk from her face. Truly, she couldn’t help it. Ann was complimenting her and how could she really hate this moment.
A million different ideas flew through her mind and yet none fully formed. It could be anything, obviously something Ann was self conscious of. Whatever it could be was making her anxious but the heart ache in blue eyes was clear for anyone to see.
“Tell me whatever you need to.”

“Fuck...” Anne muttered as she carefully made a small pile of firewood around the burning newspaper, only slightly burning herself in the process.
“I’m not butch butch. Hate to break it to you.” Anne smiled with a self satisfied curl of her lips. She turned to look over her shoulder. “Obviously you mean that you have only looked in a platonic and professional way.”
Had it been someone else, someone more distant; Anne would have made a semi lewd comment or just skipped all formalities and offered a quick fuck and forget.
Anne stood before dropping her long body only one of the seats and tapped the place near her.
“Since you’ve made me light it, you might as well enjoy it with me.”

The way her name rolled from her dates tongue was perfect. It was sweet and it made Anne’s heart swell and want to devour her completely. Her hands swept Ann’s blonde locks over her shoulders as she consindered if it would be too brash to kiss her again.
“Ummm... as far as I know. It’s not like there’s much to go wrong with it.” A quick glance and it was obvious the basket of firewood was still kept to the left hand side of the small furnace. “Or do you just want to see how butch I am with fire lighting?”
With little thought, she pressed an almost chaste kiss to Ann’s supple lips. Anne turned, sliding the bolt to secure the door and moved around the small room to start with the fire. Luckily for her, there was a set of matches still nestled between the kindling as she started to roll up her shirt sleeves.

Anne beamed, her eyes crinkling in happiness.
“Quite the confident-“ Ann left and the brunettes body seemed to feel like ice and she utterly touch starved. Her initial reaction was to focus on her dates hesitation in her speech but Anne was, quite literally, pulled back into reality.
Her feet didn’t seem to catch up to the rest of her body as Ann set off with a determination Anne hadn’t anticipated.
“Erm... yes, of course.” She spluttered with two jogged steps to keep up with the smaller woman. Anne came to the fork in the path, their arms extending before Anne’s strength won out and the small chaumiere came into view in a clearing. “Here we are...”

Her heartbeat against her chest in ever quickening succession. She felt sixteen again with excitement brewing within her with the prospect of a kiss from a pretty girl.
Eyes fluttered shut as Ann touched Anne’s face and brought them together in a gentle kiss. Anne held herself back from anything more than innocence regardless of how much she wanted it, just focusing her pent up energy into squeezing Ann’s hip through the tight denim.
Ann’s dipped her knees slightly as their kiss deepened, rolling her eyes with a hint of satisfaction as heart skipped a beat in her chest. One word and a single kiss and she was utterly done for and infatuated. Her other hand came to lightly rest on her partners neck asif she could be gone at any second and then just a distant memory.
“You don’t seem nervous anymore...” Anne mused with their lips still lightly brushing as she spoke before pressing another kiss to Ann and straightening out her body once more. “‘Seem pretty confident to me.”

Annes eyebrows knitted together in thought as she sipped her drink.
“I just always knew. It was more just ‘ahh that makes sense’ when I got a bit older and could put a name to it. Everyone else knew already so no one was surprised when I came out. All very underwhelming. What about you?”

Anne’s mouth went suddenly dry as her breath hitched in her chest. Surely, this waif of a woman really wasn’t causing her to become speechless but as Anne caught a glimpse of her sliding down her zipper as couldn’t help but feel like her head was going to explode at any second.
The competitive streak in her wanted to go one step further but she also didn’t want to push Ann in any way that she’d regret their time together. She was incredibly aroused and this was the most attention she’d had in months with being away. It wasn’t unwelcomed either, Ann was beautiful and sweet obviously nervous but then she had these moments of brilliance that made Anne’s knees weak.
“Deal.” Anne said with an air of confidence as she stood back a few inches and popped open the button on jeans. “You first, since it was your idea.”

“Me?” Anne stuttered as she tapped her fingers into her own chest and coughed in discomfort. “What did I do? How did I? We don’t even know each other.”
Her mouth ran various confused thoughts as her brow crinkled. Instinct told her to run, bolt out the door and never come back but she was curious to exactly what was meant.

Ann’s cheeks suddenly burnt and the fire glow reflected harshly off them as Anne watched her move away. She wanted to catch her and bring them back to seconds ago but it wasn’t right.
Idiot. She’d ruined the moment. Her long legs now crossed and with her elbows resting on her knees, she scanned over Ann’s face of conflict. She’d pushed too far and Ann had gone cold on her again. To make matters even worse all Anne could think about would be how amazing her lovers naked body would look in the soft after glow, the blush on her cheeks from exhaustion and the fire reflecting the thin sheen of her pale skin.
“I mean... whenever you’re ready, yknow. You said you hadn’t had girlfriends before and I don’t want you to regret something... When you are ready, however, You’ll find no resistance from me.” Her hands clasped together as she coughed in desperation of something to say. “I’m not usually lost for words...” Anne admitted.

“Shit...” Anne muttered under her breath. She came so close but Ann just clearly couldn’t go through with it. Maybe Anne was too old, too gay, too butch or just too unavailable. “Shit... Shit... Shit...”
Ten past came and that was her que to leave. Ann’s hadn’t been stood up before and never like this but she could at least pretend to be walking around the estate and then go home to curl up and drown her sorrows.
And then the world seemed to slow... her lips pulled into a smile before she could process it and the breath hitched in her chest as she caught a full glimpse of Ann hastily running to her.
“Hey, hey, hey, it’s okay. Just breath.” Laughing as her hands grabbed onto Ann’s thin arms as the younger woman bent slightly catch her breath and Anne caught an eyeful. “You just managed to get me, lucky for you... I’m glad you came, Ann.”
