[fic crit, amatonormativity (blogger's own) cw]
revisited a story that i remembered really enjoying, but have had difficulty digging up for a reread because, as it turns out, it's a good 200 pages deep in the relevant pairing tag, andâ
turns out that i do still really dig it, and also that the other thing i remembered about it is equally still true, which is that it totally fails to really resolve the emotional side of things! like, it's a fic full of Plot and briefly- but vividly-drawn OCs, and people from the main characters' pasts who show up in ways that work for the story but are also random enough to lend verisimilitude, and we get to see the elements of the foil's day-to-day lifeâwhat keeps them busy and burnished when they're not off Adventuring with our protagonistâin generous, engaging detail, and all of that remains really satisfying and compelling to me; but it's billed as a fic ft. a pairing, and yet all we see of that is an established, undiscussed level of ambiguous intimacy that's lovely and warm but queerplatonic at absolute most, and doesn't get tied into any sort of bow by the end, even a friendly one.
and the thing isâthere's absolutely nothing wrong with that! if it weren't for the pairing tag i probably wouldn't even find it unsatisfying: it'd just be lovely warm plotty genfic, and i'd enjoy the hell out of it! but i am, for better or for worse, amatonormative enough that when i see a story with a pairing tag, i do personally expect some combination of Romance Feelings and/or sex to appear on the page, unless the author's notes inform me the relationship is queerplatonic or similarly asterisked, and having that expectation go unmet feels like a disappointment even when the fic is on all other fronts the opposite of disappointing. which i'm fully ready to accept is my own failing, rather than the story's! but. idk. pondering and processing. :)
#(i understand this is a totally useless post without citing the fic but. rude to do that! so.#just thinkin out loud here in my Thoughtful Spot (milne voice) 4 my own future reference.#inquiries privately entertained.)#anyway honestly part of me wonders if the author just ran out of timeâ as much as anything else#because it's one of those 'wrote this for a challengeâ got carried awayâ bon appetit' situations#but another bigger part of me just thinks they don't conceptualize Satisfying Relationship Arcs the way i do!#whichâmaybe they're aro but also honestly i know allo writers who don't write relationships i find satisfying so. who knows really#generally best not 2 assume even if available evidence points a particular way!#anyway. truly a stupid number of words just 2 say: (re)read a thing; loved it; was disappointed by one aspect of it;#feel stupidly disproportionately let down by thatâ in the way one does when everything else was good and it got you hoping#you were Kindred Spirits and then you turn out to not beâ not quiteâ after all#fannish things#also i guess#bookblogging

AEW ALL OUT 2021
In which, not to get ahead of myself here, AEW puts on one of the best major wrestling shows in several years*, following the simple yet effective principle of giving the people what they want and sending everyone home happy and hungry for more.
- The incredibly 'Nitro' ending of the go-home Dynamite, which ran a little long on the 'heels beat everyone up and strut around like assholes almost too in desperate need of comeuppance' bit, short of garbage raining into the ring, did actually increase the heat for both promoted matches. Again, not rocket science, but executed perfectly. Catharsis was on the card, and catharsis went over several times Sunday. - Again, it's time to move on from the Casino theme, shuffling the deck and drawing suits really only detracted from the Battle Royale and seemingly always throws the production crew a curve. If they haven't hammered it by now, it's not going to happen. - Bit unhappy about the PAC/Andrade situation, but still over the moon with Andrade's promo style and Chavito being unhelpful at best.
*Pre-Card
Best Friends and Jurassic Express v The Hardy Family Office and The Hybrid 2 (**) - Not usually much to say about a loaded-up multiteam boondoggle, particularly when the show has yet to begin, but there were some moments worth sitting up to take notice -- there's a lot of talent in the ring, even if Jack Evans/Angelico aren't going to be more than mid-level mooks, little matchups with guys like Luchasaurus and Chuck Taylor are opportunities for innovative/weird spots. - Really this match exists to show-off Jungle Boy, play his theme song twice, and work him in to the aforementioned spots. I don't rightly know what Jungle Jack's ceiling is, but it sort of feels like he's plateauing, at least this version of himself. - Dan Lambert thing is interesting in that it doesn't seem to easily lead to something obvious... I mean who are Scorp and Ethan Page feuding with by proxy here, the concept of contemporary professional wrestling? Orange Cassidy and Kenny Omega?
*Main Card
Miro (C) v Eddie Kingston for the TNT Championship (***1/2) - 'Redeem Deez Nuts' T-shirts now available -- and made immediately redundant now that Miro has graciously redeemed Eddie's nuts. - Imagine looking at Miro, listening to Miro talk, and not really being able to figure out this guy is money. Also imagine panicking when he took a little while to find his groove in AEW. 'The Redeemer' is both entertaining and terrifying, and this match delivered heavily on the promise of two big fellas smacking together repeatedly. - Not only does Eddie's arsenal of power moves target Miro's neck, he may also be quite difficult to put in the full reclined camel clutch. Or he'd quite literally snap in half. It didn't come to that. - Weird heel turn by Bryce's attention span and the overall weirdness of the finish is all that kept this from being an excellent match, otherwise this was a tremendous curtain jerker and started off a dangerously fun run of pure adrenaline.
Jon Moxley v Satoshi Kojima (****) - The stakes were nebulous, the build was abrupt, yet this was a fantastic match and tremendous showcase for an underappreciated great who has been more or less just toiling for a bunch of years as a NJPW Dad. Same deal for Nagata, and I assume Tenzan is the same, Taka Michinoku even -- let's see it. - I have to assume the Cozy Lariat might have put Mox down, but Kojima otherwise played the hits (Koji Cutter, Piledriver, Brainbustaaaa) in a big way and Moxley once again proved he's become a very well-rounded wrestler who can match the intensity of just about any former IWGP champion. - More to the point-- KAZE NI NARE -- out of nowhere, too. Or out of nowhere to those not paying attention to the whereabouts of Minoru Suzuki (Right, he's just over here to fight Daniel Garcia and not Mox?), which I guess is to my own peril. Wow, though. Surprise Number 1- a complete surprise, and a welcome one. Let's have it.
Dr Britt Baker, DMD (C) v Kris Statlander for the AEW Women's Championship (****) - I love Kris and her best friends but she didn't have a prayer of dethroning Britt. She got one promo, several weeks ago, and though she did make a meal of Hayter and Rebel, the chase has been abrupt and not given much discussion, other than Mark Henry and whomever else acknowledging what is extremely evident -- Statlander is stronger than she looks, and she looks really strong. They've got her doing Cesaro-level 'modify your grip while holding your opponent's entire weight' nonsense, and it's amazing and scary. - Even with the reign of the good doctor not being credibly threatened, this was an excellent match that demonstrated the continued growth of the competitors in the women's division, even as it underlined that their storylines remain undercooked and perfunctory: Orange Cassidy whipping off his shades to urge Stat to get up was a beautiful moment. Britt's Panama Sunrise, also, too sweet. Statlander eating shit on her 451 and her pendulum moonsault was properly brutal, as were Britt's curb stomps. Really great match between these two. - Again, if they had bothered to write anything into this story, such as Kris' alien physiology making her immune to the lockjaw or something... actually, maybe that's a terrible idea. it's an idea. Undefeated challenger is defeated, on to the next for Dr Britt. Statlander and OC should tag against some of the boys.
The Young Bucks (C) v The Lucha Bros for the AEW World Tag Team Championship(*****+) - Can't not mention the insane entrance lined up for Fenix and Penta. It was bewildering, it was enchanting, it was aggressive, it was hype. It also reminded everybody how very badly we all wanted the Lucha Bros to win. The crowd has been setting new peaks with their volume since Punk showed up, but things were absolutely thunderous and ecstatic at the end of this match. Absolutely valid response. I yelled on the couch. - Nick's facial hair was a bigger tell that it was time for the Bucks to lose than anything else about this build. There's literally nowhere to go from there -- they've done the hair, the bandanas, the kicks, the animal print, the dangly earrings -- peak visual heel for this time and place. - Sincerely thought this was going to be too much of a full sprint spot-fest (the PWG-esque circle of trading blows is not really 'my thing') but even so they kept finding gears, and ramping and ramping and adding blood and brutality along the way. Even a bit of levity, with the tacked up sneaker, followed by the sincerity of Penta throwing himself in harm's way to protect his brother. Immense match, I think you'd have to go back to the Bucks vs the Addiction and MCMGs Ladder War to find a more thrilling tag team gimmick match. - If there's a single flaw to be found it's in the production not really settling on wide angles for simultaneous action at the start of the match. They figured it out. - Rey Fenix is the best luchador in the world.
Women's Casino Battle Royale (**1/2) - If nothing else, this really shows off that they now have a surplus of women's wrestlers who deserve time to hang in the ring. Unsurprisingly, the match picked right up when Thunder Rosa and then Jamie Hayter got to the ring, with additional props to Tay Conti and Jade Cargill, who was dumped rather unceremoniously given her general booking... - Okay, there was something else. Welcome to the rechristened Ruby Soho, who I've not seen a lot of outside of her extremely limited showcase in WWE, but she has so many friends in the back and in the industry and that's never for nothing, not in wrestling, anyway. Intrigued to see where she fits, and if the women ever get more than a match per show. - Touched on this in the preamble but this was the roughest part of the night for the home viewer, just weird decisions on cutting away from various entrances to show... nothing in particular happening. Also while the commitment to not-kayfabing the countdown clock is... admirable? It makes the pacing hinky. - Almost everyone who got new gear for tonight was looking like the white ranger -- Nyla, Swole, Bunny, someone I'm missing. Except Anna Jay, whose stars and glitter gear looked great.
MJF v Chris Jericho for the fate of Jericho's in-ring career (***) - MJF's unauthorized homage to Y2J's entrance: good. Fozzy's guitarist going off tempo with the instrumental Judas: weak, and would've been sad if this were the end for Jericho. Especially as the build has felt... muted, somehow. - Props to the commentary for continuing to feed the red herring of 'in AEW,' as a caveat to stipulation, it did feel like... a remote possibility that MJF would win. - Credit to Aubrey for calling this one down the middle and not putting the fix in for her friend Jericho, and I guess the Dusty finish will give MJF plenty to gripe about. - MJF wrestles with a pure heel style, holds, chops, blocks, and Jericho is fifty years old, so the level of wrestling on exhibition in these matches is well beside the point. It was solid to good, and I was fighting burn out from the first half of the card's level of excitement.
CM Punk v Darby Allin (***1/2) - There are a couple benefits of Darby as a dance partner, and it's certainly better than having to watch Punk return against like, QT Marshall or Shawn Spears. Darby does make everyone look slow, but he can also be tossed around, and this raises his profile even in defeat, obviously. That said, the stakes here are... meta, at best, in that we want to see the man look good and justify the hype. It's a weird thing to root for. He certainly does look good. (Tights? Tights!) - It's fun to theorize about actually booking an angle where Punk is rusty and needs to regain his prowess, and maybe he'll stumble, but maybe the most we get out of that angle is hitting the GTS a little close to the ropes so Darby falls right out of the ring, in what was, for me, the spot that justified this whole match. - Sting's proud step-dad aura is still a hell of a thing, I really liked the end of the match kudos all around. - Match was good, hard to hang my emotions on. I wasn't watching WWE when Punk was in WWE. Definitely feeding off the excitement of others a bit here, and he sure can talk. I'd like to see him cultivate a stable, certainly.
Paul Wight v QT Marshall (n/r) - ...popcorn match? QT Marshall is like the anti-Daniel Garcia in that while his prominence and presence is just as inexplicable, I don't want it to continue, and he doesn't justify it in the process. - Match was two minutes longer than it needed to be.
Kenny Omega (c) v Christian Cage for the AEW World Championship (****1/2) - Crowd was both burnt out and more or less waiting for the post-match angle. Which I get. it's hard to cruise to the main event and having seen all the different things we've already seen on this card, even a singular performer like Kenny Omega and a legend with whom he (surprisingly? fittingly?) has superb chemistry with in Christian Cage were up against it to deliver something memorable. - Context dependent, I can definitely see rating this below their Rampage match, especially since... I mean Christian isn't winning the AEW title off Kenny at this or probably any other event. - But! It was really good! It was very good! They really do match-up well, and Kenny's v-trigger has rarely looked more devastating than when it knocks Christian flat. Christian got cut open in a novel and initially worrying way, and Kenny followed up a botched moonsault with a harder version of the same move off a rail, but it was a really great match and it deserved more energy than was available.
Post-Show - Calling back and inverting the end of Dynamite, The Elite strut about the ring, slightly less stoked than they were on Wednesday, but with the Bucks smiling through the pain, and Jungle Boy once again subjected to violence for his misguided heroism, Kenny 'not much a promo' Omega lays down a killer line about nobody being fit to challenge him who isn't unavailable, already tired or dead. - The Undertaker ADAM COLE, BAY BAY as Surprise #3 was a minor stroke of brilliance, and a fun swerve because while it's exciting to see him, his appearance at this point in the narrative does nothing to solve the problem of The Elite beating up Christian and Jungle Boy. Unless he's still sore about his unsolved murder, which he isn't. Storytime with Adam Cole is back and it's beautiful. Also Jungle Boy died for this. - Okay. But. Just. Okay. CM Punk and Bryan Danielson are All Elite. They will hopefully tag together. Bryan will head to NJPW, almost definitely. Minoru Suzuki just walked in and started slugging on Mox. The Forbidden Door is wide open. Will Kenny Omega one day return to Wrestle Kingdom? There are so many possibilities and they are all very exciting. This was a phenomenal show and it didn't have Hangman Page, Cody Rhodes, FTR, Santana and Ortiz, PAC, Andrade, Sammy Guevara, Team Taz, and the rest.
- Wrestling is good, actually. Imagine watching like five hours of wrestling and loving wrestling at the end of it.
*What competes- WK11, Dominion 2018, 2019, DoN 2019, 2021.. All-In, probably. Wrestlemania 30. A few Takeovers. Kris Wolf's retirement show...

The Geopolitical Consequences of COVID-19: Over the Cliff On the evening of Saturday, April 18, 2020, the forty thousandth (40,000) âpresumed COVID 19 death,â according to new CDC guidelines occurred. Where death only affects the few, the misinformation, withheld or suppressed data, the lies, the propaganda and censorship are making things worse. Thus, we turn to the format of a loose intelligence briefing as the infectious nature of propaganda has to be resisted and it is so very hard to resist. On the morning of Sunday, April 19, 2020 a propaganda blitzkrieg began, using Trump administration surrogates, claiming the deaths are really âfake peopleâ and âempty hospitals.â We might call this âpandemic denial,â made dangerous as the pandemic, as of mid-late April 2020 is clearly in control and those claiming otherwise are knowingly lying for reasons we will make clear. Major medical centers across the US are at an average of 80% of capacity. Some are higher, much higher. In some areas temporary hospitals are being used but more often non-COVID patients are being âturfedâ to rural medical centers where their needs may not be properly addressed. As with any emergency, the first victim is truth. Social media lends itself toward sensationalism and can attract those with victimization fantasies. Thus, only information from known sources is accepted and nothing from mainstream or social media can be trusted. The situation in American hospitals, not all but more than the public would imagine, is grave. Currently, PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) is in good supply with the exception of N95 masks and that situation is rapidly improving. Availability of ventilators in the US is currently very good, thanks to individuals like Elon Musk, the governments of Russia and China and many charitable organizations that have gone to great efforts. By âvery goodâ we are speaking of supplies as predictive modeling indicates. One of the problems, however, is that the predictive models are predicated on assumptions not in evidence and are failing. This critical failure, and the cloak of secrecy around it, has given rise to the lunacy and subterfuge we are seeing in Washington. Part of that failure is at hospital level. To clarify, the issue is getting patents off ventilators. Nearly half of those on ventilators now are at or above 10 days and face a poor outcome. Claims that half may die are low. Most or all will die unless a late stage treatment protocol is developed in time. This is a life and death race and we are losing. Moreover, many patients who are never intubated but stay on cannula for oxygen, as we are told was the case with Boris Johnson, seem to recover then quickly succumb for no apparent reason. Johnson likely received Remdesivir, which has been denied other NHS patients. If so, the political fallout for Johnson, whose policies left the NHS grossly unprepared for the COVID 19 pandemic, will and should be catastrophic. The biggest morbidity factors are the following: Age (60 plus) Obesity Smoking Diabetes Any other cardiopulmonary issues The glaring question of irregular morbidity figures must be addressed. This is what we have learned: The healthcare systems of Italy and Spain were very much ânot as represented.â Claims that the hospitals of Northern Italy, in particular, are among the âbest in the worldâ is patently false. Were it not for Russian and Chinese aid, both Italy and Spain would have collapsed. Standards of care considered ânormalâ in Britain, France, Belgium, Spain and Italy rate at or below the worst in the US. That said, with massive medical infrastructure, the US was blindsided as well. Twenty percent of COVID 19 victims are healthcare professionals. Past that, vital support personnel for health care are primarily African American or Hispanic. This has given rise to issues of specific genetic vulnerabilities which are likely at this point overemphasized. Households with healthcare and support workers most often have one or more adults working away from home, often in areas of very high exposure. Past this we look at Iran, hard hit early on. If figures are to be believed, Iran peaked on March 29, 2020 and is showing a steady decline in new patients barring a second wave. Iranâs testing program has been more aggressive than most and if these figures are reliable, they offer some hope to nations, unlike the United States, that took the threat seriously. The material offered here is an intelligence briefing on a vital situation. The US government is keeping secret, even from state governors, the real situation with the COVID 19 pandemic, as a first wave, ending many lockdowns, by May 1, 2020 is planned. There is nothing worse than an election year in the United States, nothing worse except, maybe, an election year with a nation fully engaged in not just a pandemic but economic collapse as well. Never has the very real threat of extremism and totalitarianism been this close for the United States. We will be addressing this issue, the failure of governance but also the âelephant in the room,â how the lockdowns themselves are a panacea. Our models are failing, based on mixed data on acquired immunity. We have had several reports this week that reinfection rates are high, particularly from South Korea. By the first week of February, the US had reached one of two scenarios, that could have only been mitigated by a quick vaccine, not possible, and assumptions on immunity that were not evidence based: Where a 10 lockdown would have applied on February 1, a two-month lockdown from mid-March to mid-May is likely to lead to waves of reinfection, through September. Lockdown beyond that would do nothing and economic factors dictate opening up, taking the extinction level hit, to an unimaged level. This scenario advocates a May 1 end to lockdown, if continued reliable reinfection reports come in, which is likely to give us a âwash throughâ lasting until February 2021. Option 2 is most likely and may well be inexorable, a âwash throughâ combined with waves of reinfection. New treatment protocols, and there few showing promise, would be the priority. Generally, Hydroxychloroquine/Chloroquine is facing a dim future. Side effects are devastating, and effectiveness has, thus far, been in only moderate cases and anecdotal. Convalescent serum is at an experimental stage and weeks from deployment. Initial tests show it to be useful in a percentage of cases with the following caveat, patients thus far either improve quickly or die of a reaction to the serum. This information is being withheld. We have promising antivirals, but these have only been used in non-defining test situations that, out of humanitarian concerns, do not have a double-blind. We are hopeful. Saying we have reached an âend of the world as we know itâ has both good and bad connotations. Large military forces are no longer in the cards for the major powers. It has been proven how easy it is to take a ship at sea down. There are so many ways to target infections to diminish military capability, there is now a weapon that makes any state a major player again, and the US is entirely to blame with their massive biological weapon research program. You see, the US allowed the program to filter into the universities for âcoverâ as numerous treaties are being violated. Every president since and including Clinton has a hand in this. Bush 41 tried to stop this and this and other reasons were why his presidency was ended, a story that will never be told. Bush learned early about the planning of 9/11 and watched Clinton increasingly lose control of the reins as right wing extremist elements in Washington partnered with rogue elements in the Pentagon, CIA and the criminal elites of the former Soviet Union, soon to make up the core of the Kosher Nostra crime syndicate. Trumpâs handling of this issue, if one is to assume his blunder was unintended, is the single biggest failure of governance in American history. While covering his tracks, working with organized crime to foster internal rebellion, wrongly targeting China and continually diminishing the presidency, a wave of damage that may eventually be more costly than the pandemic itself has been fomented. Oil will never be the same. Fracking will never be profitable, current pipelines and refineries under construction are now useless as are those built in recent years, many at incredible cost to the environment. Russiaâs moves into the Arctic are now likely to be curtailed. A good example will be Norway. Their GDP for the next 48 months, even without a permanent market contraction, will be down by 15% with exports down 40% or a bit more. They will move from a social welfare state with a very high standard of living to a debtor nation in less than 5 years. This is a best-case scenario for the wealthiest of nations. Saudi Arabia is entering uncharted waters. Clearly, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will end their issues with Iran. From Press TV: âA Saudi whistleblower has said that the number of Saudi royals infected with the coronavirus (COVID-19) has âexceedingly surpassedâ figures previously revealed by a New York Times report. The Saudi al-Ahd al-Jadid Twitter account made the revelations on Friday, more than a week after the NYT report said as many as 150 Saudi royals had contracted the virus. The report at the time said that over 500 beds were being prepared at the elite King Faisal Specialist Hospital that treats members of the Saudi family. On Friday, however, al-Ahd al-Jadid, which is known for whistleblowing on high-profile cases within the Saudi court, revealed that the Saudi hospital reserved for the royals in the Red Sea port city of Jeddah had been overwhelmed with coronavirus cases. âThe Jeddah specialist hospital, which is reserved for Saudi royals, is no longer capable of accepting new cases,â the Twitter account said. âTherefore, two hotels have been reserved to be fully used for accommodating and curing infected royals,â it added, naming one of the hotels as being the âMovenpick Hotelâ. As of 1400 GMT on Friday, more than 7,142 confirmed coronavirus cases were reported in the kingdom, with 87 deaths, according to a Reuters tally. Another Saudi whistleblower, Mujtahid, however, has cast doubt on official figures, arguing that the situation throughout the kingdom is much more critical. The reports of the COVID-19 disease spreading among royals come as the Saudi family is embroiled in a bitter power struggle between Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his potential rivals, according to reports.â Nations like Iraq have been, thus far, exceptionally effective in limiting the spread of the pandemic. Their last case was on April 16, 2020 and thus far register only 82 deaths with over 500 active patients. Turkey is reporting a possible downturn, as of April 14, with new cases peaking a few days earlier at around 4500 new cases a day. Turkey, however, has nearly 80,000 active patients and has been accused of significant underreporting. Russiaâs COVID 19 surge began in April but cases are a small fraction of what the US is seeing with a mortality rate, based on official reports, half of that in the US. Conclusion COVID 19, a disease that many experts werenât expecting for a hundred thousand years, is a highly modified version of the Wuhan Horseshoe Bat Virus. It is not plausible that COVID 19 developed without a gene-splicing laboratory. The odds against such a disease developing naturally are astronomical yet we are continually informed of the opposite. In order to prepare this, front line medical personnel were interviewed, even interrogated to an extent, within parameters of required tenets of patient privacy laws. The truth, the horror of the truth, is worse than the dramatic twitter video. We are asking too much of far too few and this should never be allowed to happen again. We have turned medical personnel/first responders into âcannon fodder.â

True Life: I worked for a Sociopath
In early 2013, I started a journey with a company that I loved. I was hired on as a sales associate by a strong, powerful and amazing store manager who literally taught me everything I know. She promoted me 6 months in to a lower level management role, and when she got an offer to move onto bigger things in the company, she helped push me into a fulltime management role. Her assistant manager at the time ultimately ended up filling her position as she left, and to be honest, I had no idea what I was in for. I hadn't worked too much with this particular manager prior, and didn't have much of a real raport with her at all. I truly was excited about the change, and everything felt like a new beginning. The first year was pretty rocky in general, but we just chalked it up to us all being new in our roles, and pushed through it until we got onto a schedule. The assistant manager at the time and I were incredibly close, and it was pretty clear to me at the time that she was being bullied and demonized by our store manager, but I thought maybe it was just some kind of personal bad blood between them. The store manager (we will call her Sarah) would talk to associates and other managers behind her back, calling her names, and pointing her fingers at her for anything going awry in the store. Finally, our ASM snapped, and left the company. Sarah told us all that things would be SO Much better without her there "creating hostility". Most of us knew that the former ASM wasn't the problem.
With the separation of our ASM, I was then ushered into the role as a replacement. I was excited. I was excited about a raise, about more responsibility and the growth that I had worked SO hard for. To give you just a little information on my character: I'm a fiery personality, but I'm also incredibly compassionate. I'm a giant mama bear, and I looked at all my employees as my little cubs. With that being said, I was always doing everything with theirs and the stores' best interest in mind. Now at this time, Sarah had A LOT of personal stuff going on. She always did, to be honest. The personal shit never stopped. But, unlike most people who put themselves in a store management position, she used her power to work everything in HER favor so it didn't conflict with her super dramatic life. This meant breaking every rule along the way. She scheduled herself only opening shifts, on a consistent schedule. Every single Sunday off. And when any small thing happened in her life, she just wouldn't show up to her shifts. She would expect me to come in on my days off to cover her shifts on a monthly basis. She made me work doubles covering her shifts more than a few times. If you were not flexible with her, she would tell you that you just needed to take one for the team and would punish you with a cold attitude and talk shit about you behind your back to the rest of the staff. She bullied everyone in the store, but especially the management team. On the other hand, if you were sick and tried to call out... she'd refuse to cover your shift and make you come in anyways. When she wouldn't come in for a scheduled shift, she would just code in PTO for herself and move on with her day. When she was there, she didnt do anything at all. One time she passed out in the back room from pills while our sales lead was on the floor by herself. As fulltime managers we were assigned DORs (departments of responsibility). There was Operations, Talent and Merchandising and they were split between the 3 fulltime managers. My last year with the company, I was working 2 of the 3 while Sarah was doing none. I took more than half of the conference calls. I planned our entire fiscal year. I made ever schedule, did every interview and every new hire onboarding. I was training our keyholder in the merch DOR. When I say that I was literally running a 1.6 million dollar store with no help from my SM, while only making $13hr I AM NOT KIDDING. All the while, anytime I tried to initiate positive change, and enforce standards I was immediately shot down and told "I am not the Store Manger". So essentially - we were failing. At this point I learned that on top of everything I was doing, she was telling everyone else in the store than I was a horrible manager and did nothing. She called me names to people, and even lied to them about crazy shit she claims I did. When I confronted her, she would tell me it never happened. All our employees were quitting left and right because she was literally crazy. She would yell at them on the sales floor and make them cry, force them to stay past their scheduled shifts and the few times she did make the schedule she would schedule them outside of their availability and fuck us over with coverage on the weekend. She manipulated every single person on staff. I left work crying every day.
Now here's where things got fucking psychotic. My keyholder and I had to drive to Tampa for a training certification class, and one thing led to another that ended with us spilling only a small portion of the crazy shit going on in our store. The manager training us empowered us to go to our DM. I spent the night writing and incredibly detailed list of everything she had been doing with help of the rest of the store staff and management team. The next day I called our DM and she was floored. She told me that she was going through HR to get it figured out (this was in august) and while she got in a small amount of "trouble"for a few small things, Sarah was still our store manager and she was bullying us worse than ever. Sarah immediately assumed that I was the one that got her in trouble (even though every single person on staff contributed) and she took it out on me in the worst ways. She denied all of my request offs and had my working every single weekend. Things hit rock bottom after Hurricane Irma hit us on October 2018. We had an emergency close the day before the hurricane touched down because our entire staff was living in evacuation zones and were running out of the state to stay safe from the storm. The night we closed it was me, Sarah and an associate who we will call Ashley. Things were totally normal, low stress and went fairly smoothly. When we arrived back after the storm everything seemed normal. Another week passed, and my husband and I were driving down south to his parents house when I received a call from my DM. In this call she Informed me that my CRAZY BITCH SM told her that on the night of the emergency closing I told her that if we didn't close the store I was going to KILL HER AND HER FAMILY.
WHAT THE FUCK.
She also made the mistake of telling the DM that the associate was a witness. And the DM told her that she needed to have a conversation with me and ask me why I said that. The DM (thankfully) warned me that this conversation might happen, but neither of us thought this bitch was crazy enough to actually lie about something so serious that she claims I said TO MY FACE.
BOY WERE WE WRONG!
She called out of her next shift with me, but then proceeded to come in before hours at 8:30 AM as I was opening the systems, cornered me alone in the stock room, and this bitch looks at me and says "Kianna, do you remember saying anything inappropriate to me during the emergency close?"
Me: No...
Her: Nothing... at all?
Me: Nope. Nothing at all, why?
Her *yelling*: SO YOU DONT REMEMBER THREATENING TO KILL ME AND MY FAMILY??!
ME*completely shocked that she literally said it*: No, Sarah. Seriously? We both know I would never say something like that. I literally dont even use that kind of language jokingly.
Her: Just admit you said it and apologize.
Me: I'm not going to admit to something I didnt say.
Her: Ashley was working she heard you!
Me: Oh really? Ashley happens to be my opener. Let's ask her! If she heard me say that, I will apologize and just accept that I somehow said this horrible thing and blocked it out.
Her *hesitantly*: oh... okay.
When Ashley arrived, we sat her down and Sarah asked her the same uncomfortable question. "Do you remember Kianna saying something incredibly inappropriate and threatening the night we emergency closed?"
Ashley: Uhh... no?
Sarah: So you don't remember her threatening my family's life?
Ashley: UHM, DEFINITELY NOT?!
Sarah: UGH, WELL I HOPE YOU ARE HAPPY, ASHLEY, THAT SINCE YOU WON'T ADMIT THAT SHE THREATENED ME THAT I WILL LOOK LIKE A LIAR TO MY BOSS!
Turns out she then tried to groom Ashley into lying for her by offering her a raise if she lied. Ashley told our DM this. SARAH WAS STILL OUR STORE MANAGER. By the end of October, 3 MONTHS AFTER TURNING HER IN, I was done waiting. I turned in my notice, found a better paying job and left that toxic situation. I left because I felt unsafe in my work environment and despite all my evidence and her threats and her literally lying in hopes to get me fired and arrested I WAS STILL BEING FORCED TO WORK WITH HER.
The day I turned in my notice, I found out I was pregnant with my son. Leaving that toxic environment was the best decision I ever made. KNOW YOUR WORTH, GUYS.

Ark Core Desktop Wallet
Increased blockchain usage is a very good thing, right? ARK is definitely a fairly fresh job aimed at increasing user adoption of blockchain technologies, among other things. Nonetheless, one of the major concepts in the ARK whitepaper is that that they will bring blockchain technological innovation to the masses. They will intend on doing this by simply providing Practical Solutions regarding Real People along with Swift Secure Core Technology. A single way ARK is doing it is by creating a good environment that will let any individual or even company to create their unique wash blockchain in a new couple of minutes. To get this to propagate as immediately and extensively as possible typically the ARK team has place a great emphasis on adding as many coding languages together with blockchains as possible, and providing the very best possible user experience. On this ARK Coin review you will take an in-depth glance at the project as well since the technology together with potential clients for the coin themselves. Increased blockchain usage is definitely the good thing, ideal? ARK is a rather new project aimed at increasing user use connected with blockchain technology, amongst other factors. But, one of the crucial concepts in the ARK whitepaper is that that they will bring blockchain technological innovation to the masses. That they plan on performing that by providing Practical Services with regard to Authentic People as very well as Fast Protect Central Technology. One way ARK is carrying out this can be by means of generating an ecosystem that will allow any individual or maybe business to build their very own standalone blockchain inside of a few minutes. To get this to spread as quickly plus commonly as possible the particular ARK staff has put an emphasis on incorporating like many coding languages and even blockchains as possible, together with providing the best achievable user encounter. In this ARK Coin overview many of us will take an exhaustive look at the venture as well as typically the technologies and prospects for the gold coin itself. Bounce to ?? [hide] 1 ARK Background a couple of How Does ARK Function? 2. 1 Sensible Bridges 2. 2 Option Development Languages 2. 3 Drive Button Deployable Blockchains a few Delegated Proof-of-Stake four ARK Token 5 ARK Charges 6 ARK Functionality several Where to Buy ARK 8 Where to Retailer ARK 9 ARK Use outsourcing for Voting 10 Conclusion ARK History The ARK blockchain was launched in February 2017 by some sort of group regarding 27 member spread over the planet, making regarding a really decentralized workforce. Currently the core staff consists of 17 members. A person of the primary creators, and the current CTO involving ARK, is FOREX TRADING Thoorens, who was likewise some sort of center developer at Lisk just before working about the ARK venture. ARK was modeled greatly upon Bitshares, Lisk plus Crypti, three older tasks all using the Delegated Evidence of Stake (dPoS) general opinion protocol. This is a good different associated with traditional Proof-of-Stake (PoS) comprehensive agreement algorithms. How Make a difference ARK Get the job done? There will be Windows ARk Coin Wallet appearing built into the key ARK ecosystem which can help the venture gain its goal of getting blockchain technology more accessible. All these key features include: SmartBridges Alternative Programming Languages Thrust Button Deployable Blockchains Wise Bridges The Smart Connect notion will be employed by ARK to produce bridges involving different opuesto blockchains. In essence ARK can grow to be an intermediary between your blockchains, allowing for transmission concerning disparate chains, and the power to trigger functions on other chains. Even though other jobs have been working on a new equivalent function, this remains a thing that isnt currently possible. Ark Smart Bridge Overview regarding ARK Smart Bridges. Source: ark. io The seriously great matter is that will SmartBridges can be made it possible for with nothing more in comparison with a bit of value provided simply by ARK. One use advantages of SmartBridges might be through swaps, which in turn could use encoded audience members to determine when a business deal can be an exchange business deal, and then approach those people transactions automatically even though now charging their typical costs. For example, a user could send 100 ARK to their Coinbase pocket, in addition to Coinbase would recognize typically the transfer as a good swap transaction and quickly switch the ARK to ETH before depositing this within the users budget. Alternate Programming Languages The ARK builders were very clear in their purpose to allow development in as numerous coding dialects as achievable, hence which include as many software coders as potential. Currently all of often the right after programming languages happen to be supported by simply ARK: Python Elixer RPC Java . INTERNET Head out PHP/Laravel TypeScript API Nucleid Ruby Swift iOS Symfony Javascript Kotlin Lua Typically the ARK team is definitely also guaranteeing support regarding R, C, Advanced PowerShell, Rust, and C++ is going to soon be available. Press Button Deployable Blockchains This can allow anyone to effortlessly make up the ARK blockchain and create their unique blockchain job. Yes, is considered identical for you to Ethereum, although without typically the cost. And these recently deployed chains will are provided with SmartBridges already entirely functional. Delegated Proof-of-Stake Alternatively than using the controversial proof-of-work consensus procedure, ARK is definitely running with a good Delegated Proof of Stake comprehensive agreement algorithm. This implies no costly components and large electricity consumption is needed, as the ARK network is anchored by means of delegates. Anyone may be a use outside agencies for, yet currently merely 51 people actually become delegates, and these are picked by way of the ARK expression owners through a voting program. Each delegate gets 2 ARK for each one block that they forge, in addition to since blocks are generally cast every single 8 secs all these delegates can make over 200 ARK per moment. ARK token holders may be each allowed one vote for delegate, which costs first ARK. It is likewise possible to unvote your delegate plus vote intended for a different delegate as well as the cost is 1 ARK every time you vote or unvote. The greater ARK tokens presented, the harder powerful and individuals have your say is. Delegated Evidence of Stake Delegate Facts of Stake Case in point. Impression Source. Youll see that use outsourcing for job hopefuls have written recommendations detailing how they will continue to work to secure the networking create ARK better intended for everyone. 1 well-liked means of obtaining electoral votes is through profit posting. Due to the fact each of the fifty-one delegates receives the praise to get forging new blocks, it is possible for them to share these benefits with those that choose them in a sort of dividend technique. One more popular course with regard to future delegates is to operate a growth project that plots on or improves often the ARK ecosystem, and throughout several cases these delegates present an equity position in the new project, or offer services for cost-free. ARK Expression ARK seemed to be launched in early 2017 with 100 million tokens, and with the recent 8 subsequent block time period there are 15, 700 new ARK created any day. Assuming this specific doesnt change, ARK has a good decreasing inflation amount, which often is 6. 31% from the first year, but is going to decrease to 4. 02% by the tenth calendar year. This drop is a long way less impressive than that will seen using Ethereum or perhaps Lisk. Typically the 8 next block time is one particular of the quicker amid cryptocurrencies. Ethereum is close up having a 14 second block time, yet Bitcoin offers a 15 minute prevent time. Along with have speedy block times, each prohibit can process 25 orders. While this excellent, often the ARK team has now explained in their whitepaper that they may make this scalable by improving the number of transactions processed by every single block, as well like reducing the block period. ARK Fees The system price for sending ARK to another wallet is 0. 1 ARK, however this specific is designed to transformation as the network increases larger and becomes better. If you wish to register as a delegate it costs 25 ARK, and to vote as well as unvote a delegate charges first ARK. These expenses usually are planned to be reduced together with the next core update, and will then turn out to be just 0. 01 ARK as a network cost for sending, zero. 02 ARK for voting about a delegate, and 10 ARK to register like a assign. All service fees are paid to the particular forging delegate which functions the block containing these fees. ARK Performance As with most cryptocurrencies the particular price of ARK has been heavily influenced by way of its own developmental milestones, but in addition by the price tag of Bitcoin, containing possessed an huge impact in the overall cryptocurrency markets. This particular means we possess seen attracts and valleys in this price of ARK considering the idea had its ICO in 2016. The first raise occurred in 06 2017, if the token hit $1. 2009 after typically the developers released a collection for Java help with the platform. With Coffee being one of often the most popular programming 'languages' the community was clearly enthusiastic by the media and directed price higher accordingly. We can easily envision a good nice spike may happen when languages such as C++ are additional. ARK Gold coin Performance ARK Gold coin Functionality. Source: Coin Promote Hat The next spike took place in Sept. 2010 2017, with often the cost reaching $3. 96 following the ARK team introduced a desktop wallet the fact that resolved many reported bugs in the earlier type of typically the desktop pocket book. The upgrade also included assistance to get Ledger, one of this most famous hardware wallets. The biggest spike got in January 2018 while the entire cryptocurrency marketplace rallied. Price hit $9. 29 at that time, nonetheless that has due to the fact downed rather far, hitting $1. forty one as regarding late August 2018 with the entire cryptocurrency industry under pressure for just about the entire starting regarding 2018. Where to Purchase ARK The largest dealing areas for ARK will be Binance and Bittrex. With Binance each BTC and even ETH are poular stock trading pairs, although Bittrex views mostly BTC trades. ARK also sees trading up Upbit and the biggest trade quantity there is against the Korean Was the winner. There are some scaled-down exchanges supplying ARK, although volumes may be small. Wherever to Store ARK Often the easiest place to retail outlet your ARK is throughout one of several wallets presented upon their internet site. You include three options: Desktop computer Wallet Paper Wallet Internet En aning Wallet The pc finances is a very fine choice as being the design can be quite good together with wonderful is excellent. You could also employ the Ledger hardware pocket book if youre after a lot more safety. Or for individuals on the go you can find mobile versions of often the ARK wallet for each Android mobile phone and iOS. Each variants are ranked 5-stars, nevertheless to be sure they havent acquired numerous reviews to date. ARK Delegate Voting If you happen to be intending on buying and positioning ARK you probably need to vote for some sort of delegate as soon while you get your ARK off the exchange and even with your own wallet. It is just one ARK to perform so, and you can easily use the vote on a good delegate which will pay a person dividends, which should help you recover the cost of voting initially. Or in the event that you prefer you can get some sort of delegate whos working on a cool project youd want to support. Voting is effortless. After you have on least 1 ARK inside your wallet simply demand Votes tab. As soon as presently there youll click Add Delegate and youll get a new pop-up where you might vote for one regarding the fifty-one existing delegates, or if you love you can easily get into the name associated with one more user youd like to vote for. Choose a delegate and make sure the checkbox next to your selected use outsourcing for is checked after which simply click Vote. Finally you are going to require to enter your passphrase to confirm your election. You are able to change your delegate vote any time, nonetheless an individual will have to give a single ARK each time you do so. Summary The ARK team attempts be building a beneficial resource for that blockchain environment as a whole. They will may possibly not be the particular only assignment trying in order to attach disparate blockchains, but that doesnt make their particular work any less precious, specially if they ending up making it where other folks neglect. The roadmap getting implemented from the team is quite ambitious, although the fact that simply means if the workforce is successful these people should be wildly productive. Personally I like this type of assignment of which aims to create some sort of useful user interface, plus make blockchain technology attainable by the lots. I could see ARK getting one of the long term survivors in the blockchain revolution.

Ask Ethan: How Can A Non-Expert Evaluate Conflicting Claims By Actual Experts?
If this past year has shown us anything, itâs how thoroughly we rely on high-quality expertise. As the COVID-19 pandemic swept the globe, it wasnât the voice of science that stood out above the fracas, but rather the machinations of politicians, only a small fraction of whom followed the best scientific recommendation available at the time. It put into context a number of related issues â vaccines, climate change, and fluoridated drinking water among them â where societyâs policies donât align with what science indisputably indicates. Even worse, you can often find people with expert credentials who advocate for either sides of an issue, further muddying the waters. If you yourself arenât an expert not only in a particular field but in the relevant sub-fields to the issue at play, how can you know whom to trust? Thatâs what Dr. Larry Moran wants to know, writing in to ask:
âI assume that you are not an expert on fluoridated drinking water, climate change, or COVID-19 and yet you feel confident that you can identify the correct scientific position on each of these topics. How do you do that and is it something that the average intelligent person can do as well? Isnât that the real question?â
The answer to the second question is yes, but it takes a lot of hard work for each and every issue you want to evaluate. Hereâs how we do it to the best of our ability.
While there are a number of science-and-society issues where the general populace and scientists ⌠[+] have differing opinions, there are many such issues where their viewpoints align extremely closely. The hope is that, by better equipping the general public to make informed decisions, theyâll make decisions that better align with the best recommendations of science.
Pew Research Center
Thereâs some âpre-workâ that goes into any sort of investigation like this, where you have to first identify what you think you know about the issue at play. What are the different things that youâve heard various people say, and how credible do you think each of those statements are? Before you even begin to evaluate the credibility of the claims at play, you have to identify what the various claims are, as well as your preconceptions about them.
Are vaccines safe and effective? How safe, quantitatively, are they, and how effective are they? What are the side effects and who is at risk of them? Will they alter your DNA, and if so, in what way?
What about the science of wearing masks? How effective are they, and what is the role that surfaces, droplets, and aerosols play in the transmission of the novel coronavirus and its variants?
What about fluoridated drinking water? Or GMO crops? Or climate change?
Identifying the relevant issues â the ones that need to be addressed in order to reach an informed conclusion â has to be your starting point.
Plant Biotechnologist Dr. Swapan Datta inspects a genetically modified âGolden Riceâ plant at the ⌠[+] International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), which is a genetically modified variant of rice that could end Vitamin A deficiency and protect hundreds of thousands of children from blindness annually, and many more from death.
David Greedy/Getty Images
Once youâve identified the various facets of a complex but important issue, youâll want to identify all the areas of universal agreement. Vaccines have, quite obviously, been a fantastic public health advance. Diseases that once ravaged populations across the world â measles, polio, diphtheria, pertussis, etc. â have been brought to the brink of eradication, largely due to vaccination efforts.
Vaccine side effects are rare, but they do exist, largely in the form of allergic reactions. However, a number of vaccine trials fail because of potentially deadly side effects; the blood clots associated with the Johnson & Johnson and AstraZeneca are prominent examples, while the CDC has catalogued a number of well-documented historical incidents.
If practically all legitimate professionals on all sides of an issue can agree on a set of facts, you can safely take those as a starting point where youâre unlikely to get anything wrong.
If you decide to argue against the scientific consensus, youâll have a very large suite of evidence ⌠[+] to overturn, explain, and supersede. If you yourself are not an expert in the specific sub-field of science that youâre seeking to overturn, the odds are very much against your success.

Then you come to the next step: identifying false claims that are either completely unsupported or directly contradicted by the science. This is a step that you must take, or youâll forever be bogged down by disingenuous arguments that are designed to distract you from the actual hard work of figuring out what is true and what is false.
However, not every issue is as easy to resolve as âperson #1 says the sky is green and the grass is blue, while person #2 says the sky is blue and the grass is green.â Some issues take a lot of research to unpack, particularly when there are a number of voices â especially if at least one of those voices comes from a source you generally respect and trust â that are actively working to spread misinformation.
And yet, a good non-expert can cut through a large amount of that misinformation simply by either talking to or listening to the conversations that a number of credible experts have had in various public forums.
A Somali boy receives a polio vaccination in 1993. Although there are many contrarians out there who ⌠[+] deride the safety and efficacy of vaccines, the consensus position is that they are humanityâs greatest defense against preventable infectious diseases.
PV2 Andrew W. McGalliard, U.S. Military
For example, consider the following questions:
Do vaccines cause autism?
Is the Earthâs temperature warming?
Is fluoride a waste by-product of the aluminum industry?
Are organic, non-GMO crops healthier for you than non-organic, GMO crops?
Will an mRNA vaccine alter your DNA?
Of course, there are many other examples, but these are ones where the information should be particularly easy to obtain simply by sifting through the internet. Vaccines definitively do not cause autism, and there are no large-scale, non-fraudulent studies that show that. Earthâs temperature is not only warming, but the warming is accelerating and is now at the 5-sigma level: where thereâs less than a 1-in-7,000,000 chance that this is a fluke of the data.
And we can go on.
The global surface average temperature for the years where such records reliably and directly exist: ⌠[+] 1880-2019 (at present). The zero line represents the long-term average temperature for the whole planet; blue and red bars show the difference above or below average for each year. The warming, on average, is by 0.07 C per decade, but has accelerated, warming at an average of 0.18 C since 1981.
NOAA / climate.gov
Fluoride is used in the aluminum smelting process as a catalyst, and it is true that the aluminum industry is the largest consumer of fluoride compounds. Once upon a time, Americaâs largest aluminum company (ALCOA) did acquire a sodium fluoride production plant, and sold sodium fluoride. However, their last sale occurred back in 1952, because it became cheaper for ALCOA to buy fluoride compounds elsewhere than it was to manufacture it themselves. None of the fluoride in municipal water supplies has ever participated in the aluminum manufacturing process for the past 59 years.
While there may be environmental differences in the impacts between organic and non-organic farming, there is no nutritional difference, and that has been studied at length and in-depth. Fascinatingly, GMO crops are often far more nutritious than their non-GMO counterparts, with golden rice and vitamin A (and its ability to prevent hundreds of thousands of cases of blindness annually) a stunning counterexample to the non-factual claim.
And when it comes to mRNA vaccines, they only instruct your cells to produce a protein, which your immune system then attacks; your DNA is never altered. In an ironic twist, contracting COVID-19 and suffering its ill effects can, and perhaps often does, alter your DNA.
The novel coronavirus COVID-19, as illustrated here against a backdrop of a DNA molecule, contains ⌠[+] only approximately 30,000 base pairs in its entire sequence, yet is capable of infecting and killing millions of people across the globe. Our best defense, at this point in time, lies in our own behavior and compliance with vaccinations, physical distancing, mask wearing, not touching our faces, hand washing, and other similar interventions.
GETTY Images
But thatâs simply the low-hanging fruit. There are plenty of issues where you yourself lack the necessary expertise to discern between various viewpoints, even after doing your homework and fact-finding to the best of your abilities.
In those instances â and this is where, in my personal experience, many science writers go wrong â itâs vital to find the correct, relevant experts. Itâs very easy to find a number of scientists who support positions that, even if they havenât quite reached full-blown crackpot territory, are certainly contrarian positions that are well out of the scientific mainstream.
Could the dinosaurs have been wiped out by a comet, instead of an asteroid?
Could todayâs temperature increase on Earth be a temporary effect, to be followed by a cooling period?
Could masks actually increase the transmission of certain viruses, rather than reducing the spread?
A comet or asteroid that struck Earth because it wasnât detected quickly enough is one of humanityâs ⌠[+] greatest natural threats, and could potentially be even worse than the extinction event of 65 million years ago. Whether these extinction events are periodic or not has long been a point of contention. But new analysis may have finally laid this speculative area of science to rest: it is not, and it was an asteroid, not a comet.
NASA / Don Davis
Even though studies supporting each of these positions have been published by prominent scientists, passing peer review in the process, the answer is a resounding ânoâ in every one of these instances. The reason isnât because I trust âexpert Bâ and not âexpert A,â nor is it because I myself know enough to evaluate the claims on their own merits for myself, even though I do, in fact, earnestly attempt to understand these issues as deeply as I can.
Instead, itâs because I know â and contact â a number of experts that I trust in a variety of general fields: physics, astronomy, biology, chemistry, geology, climate science, etc. When thereâs a contentious issue I donât fully understand, or a novel claim that appears to conflict with what I know, I:
ask them about it,
listen to what they say,
ask follow-up questions to better understand the claims and the different lines of evidence pointing towards the conclusions,
ask about errors, uncertainties, and conflicting interpretations of the data,
ask about different methodologies and what the drawback or omissions are in each case,
and to learn about where the boundary is between whatâs established, whatâs suggestive, whatâs speculative, and what is untenable nonsense.
An unmasked individual doing something as simple as exhaling (top) can send droplet particles large ⌠[+] distances, with a high potential for spreading the novel SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus. Wearing a mask (bottom) significantly reduces the distance that droplets travel, offering some measure of protection to others as well as, to a lesser extent, the wearer.
MATTHEW E. STAYMATES / NIST
In all of these three aforementioned cases, the claim in question, despite a copious amount of reporting suggesting that itâs plausible, is robustly ruled out.
The combination of Chicxulub craterâs magnitude in size, the energy required to create it, and the high abundance of elements like iridium found in the ash layer that blankets the Earth from 65 million years ago thoroughly rule out a cometary nature for the ancient impactor.
The stadium wave hypothesis, which noted oscillations (rises and falls) in the temperature at various places, like in the Atlantic Ocean, hypothesized that these oscillations were driving the apparent temperature rises seen around the globe. By hypothesizing that temperatures would fall and sea ice would regrow throughout the 2010s, and with the data clearly showing that not only was the hypothesis itself ill-founded but that both global and oceanic temperatures rose and accelerated during the past decade, the claim has been definitively falsified.
And the idea that cloth masks could increase virus transmission was from a 2015 study that compared cloth masks with medical grade masks, not with an unmasked population. That claim never had any teeth to it, but you wouldnât know it unless you had dug deep enough into the literature (and understood the context of the study) to pick that information out.
If you have the bright idea to explain how a certain specialized field works to an expert working in ⌠[+] the field, follow this helpful flowchart to determine the proper course of action.
E. Siegel
The unfortunate fact of the matter is this: there are a lot of people â scientists, science writers, reporters, and laypersons alike â who think theyâre doing a good job of separating fact from fiction, proving âthe expertsâ wrong when, in fact, they are not. There are a number of reasons for this, and they include:
hubris, where they think they know more than they do,
succumbing to shortcuts, where they donât do a sufficient amount of the necessary background research to put these new claims in their proper context,
falling for the fallacy of âtelling both sidesâ to a story, even when the scientific weight of the evidence is firmly on one side and not the other,
or, to promote a favored conclusion, they simply lie.
There are red flags that you can look out for, of course. Someone who tells you to âdo your own researchâ is almost always deliberately attempting to undermine established science. A claim that âevidence for [this new position] is increasing all the timeâ is almost always advocating for something that the weight of the evidence doesnât, in fact, support. People who use a single, personal experience as a counterexample to a scientific consensus are following anecdotes, not data. And if someone has to appeal to a conspiracy theory, that âthe truth is being suppressed,â you can fairly safely conclude that no amount of scientific data will convince them.
You may not ever be able to reason someone else out of a position they didnât reason themselves into, but you can reason yourself into a more accurate position anytime you choose simply by doing the necessary work. Hopefully, if youâre so inclined, you now have the necessary tools â and humility â to go and do so for yourself.

âCoronavirus is airborneâ: As COVID-19 claims new victims worldwide, 239 experts make big claim
If airborne transmission of coronavirus is a significant factor in the pandemic, especially in crowded spaces with poor ventilation, the consequences for containment will be significant. Masks may be needed indoors, even in socially distant settings.
The coronavirus is finding new victims worldwide, in bars and restaurants, offices, markets and casinos, giving rise to frightening clusters of infection that increasingly confirm what many scientists have been saying for months: The virus lingers in the air indoors, infecting those nearby.
If airborne transmission is a significant factor in the pandemic, especially in crowded spaces with poor ventilation, the consequences for containment will be significant. Masks may be needed indoors, even in socially distant settings. Health care workers may need N95 masks that filter out even the smallest respiratory droplets as they care for coronavirus patients.
Ventilation systems in schools, nursing homes, residences and businesses may need to minimise recirculating air and add powerful new filters. Ultraviolet lights may be needed to kill viral particles floating in tiny droplets indoors.
The World Health Organisation has long held that the coronavirus is spread primarily by large respiratory droplets that, once expelled by infected people in coughs and sneezes, fall quickly to the floor.
But in an open letter to the WHO, 239 scientists in 32 countries have outlined the evidence showing that smaller particles can infect people and are calling for the agency to revise its recommendations.
The researchers plan to publish their letter in a scientific journal.
Even in its latest update on the coronavirus, released 29 June, the WHO said airborne transmission of the virus is possible only after medical procedures that produce aerosols, or droplets smaller than 5 microns (a micron is equal to 1 millionth of a metre).
Proper ventilation and N95 masks are of concern only in those circumstances, according to the WHO. Instead, its infection control guidance, before and during this pandemic, has heavily promoted the importance of handwashing as a primary prevention strategy, even though there is limited evidence for transmission of the virus from surfaces (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention now says surfaces are likely to play only a minor role).
Dr Benedetta Allegranzi, the WHOâs technical lead on infection control, said the evidence for the virus spreading by air was unconvincing.
âEspecially in the last couple of months, we have been stating several times that we consider airborne transmission as possible but certainly not supported by solid or even clear evidence,â she said. âThere is a strong debate on this.â
But interviews with nearly 20 scientists â including a dozen WHO consultants and several members of the committee that crafted the guidance â and internal emails paint a picture of an organisation that, despite good intentions, is out of step with science.
Whether carried aloft by large droplets that zoom through the air after a sneeze, or by much smaller exhaled droplets that may glide the length of a room, these experts said, the coronavirus is borne through air and can infect people when inhaled.
Most of these experts sympathised with the WHOâs growing portfolio and shrinking budget, and noted the tricky political relationships it has to manage, especially with the United States and China. They praised WHO staff for holding daily briefings and tirelessly answering questions about the pandemic.
But the infection prevention and control committee in particular, experts said, is bound by a rigid and overly medicalised view of scientific evidence, is slow and risk-averse in updating its guidance and allows a few conservative voices to shout down dissent.
âTheyâll die defending their view,â said one long-standing WHO consultant, who did not wish to be identified because of her continuing work for the organisation. Even its staunchest supporters said the committee should diversify its expertise and relax its criteria for proof, especially in a fast-moving outbreak.
âI do get frustrated about the issues of airflow and sizing of particles, absolutely,â said Mary-Louise McLaws, a committee member and epidemiologist at the University of New South Wales in Sydney.
âIf we started revisiting airflow, we would have to be prepared to change a lot of what we do,â she said. âI think itâs a good idea, a very good idea, but it will cause an enormous shudder through the infection control society.â
In early April, a group of 36 experts on air quality and aerosols urged the WHO to consider the growing evidence on airborne transmission of the coronavirus. The agency responded promptly, calling Lidia Morawska, the groupâs leader and a longtime WHO consultant, to arrange a meeting.
But the discussion was dominated by a few experts who were staunch supporters of handwashing and felt it must be emphasized over aerosols, according to some participants, and the committeeâs advice remained unchanged.
Morawska and others pointed to several incidents that indicate airborne transmission of the virus, particularly in poorly ventilated and crowded indoor spaces. They said the WHO was making an artificial distinction between tiny aerosols and larger droplets, even though infected people produce both.
âWeâve known since 1946 that coughing and talking generate aerosols,â said Linsey Marr, an expert in airborne transmission of viruses at Virginia Tech.
Scientists have not been able to grow the coronavirus from aerosols in the lab. But that doesnât mean aerosols are not infective, Marr said: Most of the samples in those experiments have come from hospital rooms with good air flow that would dilute viral levels.
In most buildings, she said âthe air-exchange rate is usually much lower, allowing virus to accumulate in the air and pose a greater risk.â
The WHO also is relying on a dated definition of airborne transmission, Marr said. The agency believes an airborne pathogen, like the measles virus, has to be highly infectious and to travel long distances.
People generally âthink and talk about airborne transmission profoundly stupidly,â said Bill Hanage, an epidemiologist at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
âWe have this notion that airborne transmission means droplets hanging in the air capable of infecting you many hours later, drifting down streets, through letter boxes and finding their way into homes everywhere,â Hanage said.
Experts all agree that the coronavirus does not behave that way. Marr and others said the coronavirus seemed to be most infectious when people were in prolonged contact at close range, especially indoors, and even more so in superspreader events, exactly what scientists would expect from aerosol transmission.
Precautionary principle
The WHO has found itself at odds with groups of scientists more than once during this pandemic.
The agency lagged behind most of its member nations in endorsing face coverings for the public. While other organisations, including the CDC, have long since acknowledged the importance of transmission by people without symptoms, the WHO still maintains that asymptomatic transmission is rare.
âAt the country level, a lot of WHO technical staff are scratching their heads,â said a consultant at a regional office in Southeast Asia, who did not wish to be identified because he was worried about losing his contract. âThis is not giving us credibility.â
The consultant recalled that the WHO staff members in his country were the only ones to go without masks after the government there endorsed them.
Many experts said the WHO should embrace what some called a âprecautionary principleâ and others called âneeds and valuesâ â the idea that even without definitive evidence, the agency should assume the worst of the virus, apply common sense and recommend the best protection possible.
âThere is no incontrovertible proof that SARS-CoV-2 travels or is transmitted significantly by aerosols, but there is absolutely no evidence that itâs not,â said Dr Trish Greenhalgh, a primary care doctor at the University of Oxford in Britain.
âSo at the moment we have to make a decision in the face of uncertainty, and my goodness, itâs going to be a disastrous decision if we get it wrong,â she said. âSo why not just mask up for a few weeks, just in case?â
After all, the WHO seems willing to accept without much evidence the idea that the virus may be transmitted from surfaces, she and other researchers noted, even as other health agencies have stepped back from emphasizing this route.
âI agree that fomite transmission is not directly demonstrated for this virus,â Allegranzi, the WHOâs technical lead on infection control, said, referring to objects that may be infectious. âBut it is well known that other coronaviruses and respiratory viruses are transmitted, and demonstrated to be transmitted, by contact with fomite.â
The agency also must consider the needs of all its member nations, including those with limited resources, and make sure its recommendations are tempered by âavailability, feasibility, compliance, resource implications,â she said.
Aerosols may play some limited role in spreading the virus, said Dr Paul Hunter, a member of the infection prevention committee and professor of medicine at the University of East Anglia in Britain.
But if the WHO were to push for rigorous control measures in the absence of proof, hospitals in low- and middle-income countries may be forced to divert scarce resources from other crucial programs.
âThatâs the balance that an organisation like the WHO has to achieve,â he said. âItâs the easiest thing in the world to say, âWeâve got to follow the precautionary principleâ and ignore the opportunity costs of that.â
In interviews, other scientists criticized this view as paternalistic.
ââWeâre not going to say what we really think, because we think you canât deal with it?â I donât think thatâs right,â said Don Milton, an aerosol expert at the University of Maryland.
Even cloth masks, if worn by everyone, can significantly reduce transmission, and the WHO should say so clearly, he added.
Several experts criticised the WHOâs messaging throughout the pandemic, saying the staff seems to prize scientific perspective over clarity.
âWhat you say is designed to help people understand the nature of a public health problem,â said Dr William Aldis, a longtime WHO collaborator based in Thailand. âThatâs different than just scientifically describing a disease or a virus.â
The WHO tends to describe âan absence of evidence as evidence of absence,â Aldis added. In April, for example, the WHO said, âThere is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from COVID-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection.â
The statement was intended to indicate uncertainty, but the phrasing stoked unease among the public and earned rebukes from several experts and journalists. The WHO later walked back its comments.
In a less public instance, the WHO said there was âno evidence to suggestâ that people with HIV were at increased risk from the coronavirus. After Joseph Amon, a longtime WHO associate and director of global health at Drexel University in Philadelphia, pointed out that the phrasing was misleading, the WHO changed it to say the level of risk was âunknown.â
But WHO staff and some members said the critics did not give its committees enough credit.
âThose that may have been frustrated may not be cognizant of how WHO expert committees work, and they work slowly and deliberately,â McLaws said.
Dr Soumya Swaminathan, the WHOâs chief scientist, said agency staff members were trying to evaluate new scientific evidence as fast as possible but without sacrificing the quality of their review. She added that the agency will try to broaden the committeesâ expertise and communications to make sure everyone is heard.
âWe take it seriously when journalists or scientists or anyone challenges us and say we can do beairbortter than this,â she said. âWe definitely want to do better.â

Wisdom i learned from Uta hagenâs respect for acting
 Reading chapter 1
RepresentationalÂ
Presentational
The representational actor deliberately chooses to imitate or illustrate the characters behavior
The presentational actor attempts to reveal human behavior through a use of himself, through an understanding of himself and consequently an understanding of the character he is portraying
The illustration of a character's behavior at the cost of removing one's own psyche, no matter how brilliant the performance that results, creates an alienation between actor and audience
Formalized, external acting (representational) has a tendency to follow fashion
Internal (presentational) acting rejects fashion and consequently can become as timeless as human experience itself
Talent alone is not enough. Character and ethics, a point of view about the world in which you live and an education, can and must be acquired and developed.
Reach out to others
It is necessary to have a point of view about the world which surrounds you, the society in which you live; a point of view as to how your art can reflect your judgement.
To rebel or revolt against the status quo is in the very nature of an artist
Rebellion or revolt does not necessarily find its expression in violence. A gentle lyric stroke may be just as powerful a means of expression.
To portray things the way they are , to hold up a mirror of expression to the society, can also be a statement of rebellion
To maintain one's ideals in ignorance is easy; to maintain them with the full realization of the existing circumstances is not.
To accept âthe way it isâ is the opportunistic way out or the way of the ostrich; to attempt to battle it takes knowledge and character.
âI want to be the best actor in Americaâ epitomizes the american disease of ambition for success accompanied by fame and fortune as proof of worth.
One may be the favorite of a certain group, but others have a different preference.
There is nop best each worked to create his own best, not to be the best
Love the art in yourself, not yourself in the art
Chapter 2
You have a tendency to copy what you have seen others do on stage, rather than to search within your own life experience to bring forth a new human being on stage
Why should every lady in waiting move like a ballet dancer? Why should every spare carrier stand as rigid as a cardboard? Why should the king and queen intone like bad opera singers without music? Where are the real human beings in these plays? They are lost behind ready made , fale forms
We look for the ordinary rather than the extraordinary in our daily lives, and so the explorations of ourselves become smaller and less important as we go along
Our sense of reality is limited. We look at our daily lives for convenient, recognizable behaviorisms to transfer to the stage
Water down the truth to make our stage life natural
My own self-image in a given situation, who i think i am, is not always what i really am
For each person you will present a different you
Previous circumstances and existing circumstances will bring about a different you
We must learn to understand and accept the facets of ourselves which we donât wish to recognize
We must become self-observant enough not only to recognize our needs and define our feelings, but to connect them to the behavior which ensues.
The continuing job of learning to find out who you really are, of learning to pinpoint your responses and even more important, the myriad, consequent behaviorisms with result.
To seem to want or need a mask behind which to bury oneself often comes, not only from an incorrect concept but from a distrust in ourselves
The cat really exists with strong, spontaneous, forward-moving attention, and so it can surpass the actor, who is predictably busy with his stage life.
What is boring is not the real you in action, but the mechanical execution of a task whether it be over dimensional or tiny.
Your own identity and self knowledge are the main sources for any character you may play.
In sections of the country we are shaped by a society which is ashamed of spontaneous emotion.
Keep pace with the present. Take a trip to the moon. Envision the future
When looking at painting, put yourself into them instead of looking at them.
We must overcome the notion that we must become regular. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary and leads you to the mediocre.
Chapter 3
One should reject the desire to show off.
Each object of the thing that I see or come in contact with must be made particular so that it will serve the new me and bring about the psychological and sensory experiences necessary to animate my actions.
I may even use a dozen elements from a dozen different relationships from my past and put them together to build this new relationship with my stage stella.
To do is a synonym for to act,
We are nowhere near the acting; I am still in the process of building a sense of reality and faith in my character.
When the actor has difficulty in finding a substitution for the content of a given scene as a whole, he can usually find the root of the problem in the fact that he's being too literal.
Taking this substituted psychological reality and transferring it to the existing circumstances and events in the play
I have used the past to make the present real
To work for an involvement for its own sake on stage bogs down the movement of the play, disconnects you from the play, makes you blind and eaf to the play. Beware.
There is much in a creative process that is almost intangibly real and mysterious, why compound the felony and make it moreso?
You must find your own substitutions if they are to be real value to you.
That substitution is the aspect of the work which strengthens your faith and your sense of reality in each stage of the total work on character, it is a way of bringing about justified, personal character actions.
Particularizing or to make something particular, as opposed to generalizing or to keep general, is an essential for everything in acting from identification of the character right down to the tiniest physical object you come in contact with.
I have made what is there particular rather than just assuming any ashtray.
Nothing should be allowed to remain general.
Chapter 4
An emotion occurs when something happens to us which momentarily suspends our reasoning control and we are unable to cope with this event logically.
At the moment of the release of the control, plus our adjustment to an attempt at control, we are overcome.
Human beings do not want this loss of control and usually make an attempt to cope with the emotion as it hits them.
Release object, a release of the censor which moves along with us and says, donât lose control.
The consequence of this discovered procedure is endless.
Avoid the examination of any past experience which you have never talked about or wanted to talk about.
Without an understanding or a degree of objectivity to the experience it is useless to you artistically.
Actions themselves, verbal and physical, can generate strong emotions and can sometimes be as stimulating to an emotional release as any remembered inner object.
Emotion if furthered by the action.
When you claim that an emotion or a recalled object is wearing out for you by repetition, that it has lost freshness, you are failing technically.
Chapter 5
Sense memory, the recall of physical sensations.
Since the body has an innate sense of truth, we must learn some physiological facts to help us avoid the violation of the physical truth.
Bringing about your physical sensations for the characters stage life is fraught with many of the same pitfalls as the reproduction of emotional sensations
In that moment of adjustment, of attempting to overcome the heat, you will have a sensation of heat.
I am emphasizing the adjustments to overcoming the sensations because I believe that the sensations occur most fully at the moment when we are occupied with the attempt to overcome it.
After stimulating the imagination to the remembered feeling, they will bring it into the present for you.
This technique, recalling a localized sensation and finding a physical adjustment to alleviate it- is applicable to and condition you may be called upon to play.
The discovery of the sensations and how they influence you is there toon your action truthfully in the scene.
You are dictating the sensations, they are not dictating you.
Chapter 6
As a nation we have evidently become so desensitized that encounter groups, an essential part of whose programs seems to be learning to touch each other, have sprung up all over the country.
Full human contact employs all the senses, the more intense they are, the more highly they are developed, the more available is the potential of the actor this area of high sensitivity is where true talent lies
What we make of this sensitivity determines whether or not we can call ourselves artists.
A great danger is to take the five senses for granted.
You must also realize that self-involvement deadens the senses, and vanity slaughters them until you end up playing alone.
How the smell and sound of sizzling bacon can produce a feeling of well being. An unpleasant smell can be just as suggestive psychologically.
Taste is not only important but must be fully explored because in most instances on stage you wonât have the real thing.
I want a powerful sense of taste so that when i substitute another object for them on stage i will have similar sensations and adjustments
The visual contact we make with another human being or worth something in nature can act on us like a stroke of lighting
To really receive the nuance of verbal action and tone of voice rather than merely factually clicking it off with our auditory sense makes the difference between an actor and a hack.
Words are sent actively with content. You must listen for the intent of the words in order to receive them.
We also listen with our eyes. We interpret content and intention from an expression or movement which the action has given to the words.
Looking as well as listening, hinges on needs. Seeing is also balanced against expectations, immediate needs, and your past knowledge of the object.
While we talk we look intermittently at the person to whom weâre talking in order to see how they react to what weâre saying, to see if we have their attention, to see if they get the point, ect. What we see in these moments conditions how we continue our tale.
Simulated looking and listening must produce bad acting.
Anything dormant which you might awaken through daily concentrated attention to your senses will add to your growth as an actor.
Give meaning to what you receive when you see, when you heat, when you taste, when you smell, when you touch.
Chapter 7
Thought moves with such lighting rapidity that any attempt to slow it down is inaccurate, and so must bring about false behavior on stage.
Feeling obligated to illustrate thought, bodily or facially, comes from the mistaken notion that the characters thoughts manifest themselves in an organized progression.
Real thinking precedes, is accompanied by, and follows action.
Real thinking is active.
My thoughts spring from the contact with these inner objects (things or people not present in the room only as images in the mind) and bring about an inner action.
By contacting these inner objects, not present in the room, my thoughts flow forward quickly.
I never ask, âwhat were you thinking?â Instead I ask, âwhat were your inner objects?â so that you will get out of the habit of even verbally analyzing your thought process.
The actor's thinking depends on the subjective process of weighing the course of action by contact with inner and outer objects.
To act is to do, not to think.
The fight against these intrusions on true thought can be conquered only by strengthening and enlarging the circle of inner objects belonging to the play.
If any inner object in the play is not real to you, it will have no consequence in producing genuine thought.
The thoughts are anchored to the events and to the other characters.
Not only must these people and events and the things which tangibly surround you be clothed in reality for you by particularization and substitution, but everything that has happened connected with the surrounding circumstances as well.
Your objects will channel your attention into the private circle of your character's life.
You cannot dictate the order of your thoughts.
You must keep them fluid for your character's needs.
Chapter 8
Suddenly, the very act of standing became awkward. You became aware of your hands as unnecessary appendages. You lost a sense of character and place, and you became an exposed actor on stage, not a human being in a room. Then, you protected yourself by assuming a stance, a stage pose. This protective pose was probably borrowed from your earliest and most inept stage experience.
The reason for walking is destination.
The movement you create must come from carefully selected action which allows for the organic development of the character and the primary action of the scene
Each movement of true wandering has a destination, and is focused on a relevant object that we deal with in order to further the character and the story.
On stage, where every second counts, the objects should be selected and dealt with to reveal something new about the character or the circumstances, or both. The seeming illogical objects you have contacted in a strange order must be substantiated by the logic of the play.

9 Tips For Selecting a Pest Control Service
When you have a pest control problem, what starts off as a manageable situation can very quickly become uncontrollable. In that case, the best thing to do is call a professional pest control company.
But how can you be sure theyâll do a good job? When doing the research, be sure ask the following questions:
1. ARE THE COMPANY AND THE TECHNICIANS LICENSED? Most state and local agencies issue pest control licenses. Contact your State Pesticide Regulatory Agency to make sure the license is current, and the correct classification for the job.
Since different pesticides have varying degrees of toxicity, and some can be extremely dangerous in untrained hands, itâs important to make sure your home and family will be safe.
Also, a good tip to ask here is whether the companyâs employees are bonded, which means that the company reimburses you for any loss or damage caused by the employee.
2. HOW MUCH EXPERIENCE DOES THE COMPANY AND ITS EMPLOYEES HAVE, AND WHATâS THEIR REPUTATION? Some questions about experience can be answered by the company itself, such as whether newly hired technicians train with more experienced employees, or how much experience the business has with dealing with your particular pest control problem.
Other queries require you do your own research. Look for the companyâs reviews and ratings on the Better Business Bureau website, ask your State Pesticide Regulatory Agency if the company has had any complaints, ask neighbors or friends who have used the service, and look into online review websites.
3. DOES THE COMPANY OFFER A WRITTEN ESTIMATE THEY WILL STAND BY? Any legitimate pest control business will have no problem providing an estimate in writing for the treatment plan they propose, and a detailed list of costs. Most will give you the estimate for free, so itâs a good idea to get more than one when youâre looking at different companies.
Every estimate should include the following information:
Extent of the problem Pesticide chosen Method of dispersal Explanation of its active ingredient, including potential adverse effects Be sure to carefully read through the estimate. Some companies will quote you for additional services you donât need, like adding in rodent control when youâve called in the exterminators to get rid of an ant infestation.
Check the chemical components in the recommended pesticides, all of which must be registered with the Environmental Protection Agency.
4. IS PEST CONTROL POISONOUS OR DANGEROUS? Any chemical treatment of your home will inherently carry a certain risk of toxicity, if used incorrectly. That said, there are certain methods that are riskier than others.
As long as theyâre kept out of reach of children and pets, baits or crack and crevice treatments are safer than sprays or fogging devices.
The most important thing to remember about pesticide use is to follow the instructions precisely. Outdoor chemicals shouldnât be used inside the house, or vice versa.
Recommended amounts should always be respected, pesticides should be stored in their original containers, and never assume that twice as much is better.
5. WHAT SAFETY QUESTIONS SHOULD YOU ASK THE PEST CONTROL COMPANY? Pests are a nuisance, but the method of prevention can have unforeseen consequences if the chosen pesticides are used excessively or incorrectly. You should always attempt to minimize your familyâs, petâs, and environmentâs exposure to harmful chemicals.
With that in mind, some good questions to ask include:
Are the chemicals selected the least toxic options available? Are there any special instructions to reduce exposure to the pesticide, or any preparations you may have to make before the treatment? Are there recommendations of preventive measures to limit future recurrence of the problem? Does the company provide Integrated Pest Management (IPM)? This may include monitoring devices, insect growth regulators, sanitation, cultural practices, trapping or other physical measures. Is there a guarantee, and if so, what are its terms and possible exceptions? Are repeat treatments required for the guarantee, or only recommended? 6. DOES THE COMPANY REQUIRE A LONG TERM CONTRACT? IF SO, WHAT ARE THE TERMS? Not all companies require a long term contract. Depending on the nature of your pest problem, resolving it may require numerous follow-up visits, and it may therefore make sense to hire the company for a period of time.
However, you should be aware that most pest infestations only require one treatment for effective eradication.
Be wary of companies that offer scheduled chemical treatments automatically. Pesticide applications should only be done judiciously and after a thorough inspection of the home, in order to avoid unnecessary over-exposure.
7. ARE REPEAT TREATMENTS NECESSARY? Repeat treatments are necessary when the pest problem is a constant one, and preventive methods havenât solved the issue.
Cockroaches, spiders, ticks, rodents, fleas, and ants, for instance, find your home a very attractive source of food, nesting area, and shelter. These recurring pests are very hard to eradicate and usually require repeat treatments.
Termites are also notoriously difficult to completely eliminate, and they can necessitate massive structural repairs to your property.
Since termites work 24 hours a day, and infestations usually go undiscovered until serious damage has already occurred, repeat detection and continued termite treatment can really save you money in the long run.
Other pests are easy to eliminate. Raccoons and squirrels, for instance, are generally easy to get rid of by removing sources of food and blocking access points.Bees can be eliminated simply by hiring a beekeeper to relocate the queen.
8. SHOULD I ONLY PAY FOR A ONE-TIME VISIT, OR IS A PERIODIC SERVICE CONTRACT BETTER? All pest control company offer the option of a one-time service visit, but itâs important to understand that extermination works best with frequent controlâthe more time passes between treatments, the harder it becomes to get the job done.
For this reason, first visits are usually more expensive, and subsequent maintenance visitsâmonthly, bi-monthly, or quarterlyâare cheaper.
Some companies also offer periodic service contracts in which they routinely treat for a certain type of pest. This is best for recurring pest infestations in which non-chemical methods have failed to eradicate the problem.
Service contracts for homes generally include periodic inspections as well, but pesticides shouldnât be applied regularly in the absence of a problem. These inspections are included in the terms of the contract and donât incur additional charges.
One-time visits are always the most expensive up-front option, followed by initial visits and lastly, periodic visits.
9. BEWARE OF PEST CONTROL SCAMS There are some shady practitioners within the pest control business. Luckily, there are always ways to spot the scammers. Here are some helpful tips:
Always ask to see a license from any technician before they begin spraying your home. Some states allow companies to only have one single, licensed professional exterminator who then âtrainsâ the other employees. Since these other employees arenât licensed and certified, youâve no real guarantee that they have the expertise to handle chemicals. Donât get pressured into a self-renew contract. Some companies attempt to intimidate homeowners into signing a year-long contract, alleging that despite already having completed one treatment, complete eradication will require more applications. Additionally, they might even say that if thereâs still evidence of an infestation at the end of the year, the contract will automatically renew. While most states have laws against self-renew contracts, the promise of better pest control can force you into a decision that may not make sense. For most infestations, a one-time treatment should take care of the problem. Nobody can deny that pest infestations can range from the simply irritating to the truly troublesome, depending on the type of pest. When it comes to pest control, a good rule of thumb is âthe sooner, the better.â
Manageable situations can quickly get out of hand, and by that point, become much more expensive, and provoke unnecessary health problems. Take the time to research and compare pest control providers.

Hassouna, the K2 case, and citizenship removal
This article was written by Tom Clark and originally posted on his website. Clark served as the National Coordinator for the Canadian Inter-Church Committee for Refugees from 1983 to 2001, and is the author of two books on refugees in Canada. The article has been lightly edited for Rights In Exile style, and is reprinted here with permission.
Citizenship acquired by birth is enduring, but naturalized citizens can have citizenship removed for fraud or misrepresentation. This is the case in Canada. In the United Kingdom, naturalized citizenship can also be removed administratively from an individual  because it is deemed conducive to the public good; this can only be done while he or she is outside the country. The individual can then be âexcludedâ from the United Kingdom and exiled. Several court cases have recently come forward regarding these two laws. In February there was a European Court of Human Rights case involving this UK law. In May there was a judgment on a bundle of 8 lead cases about Canadian citizenship law by the Canadian Federal Court. These decisions raise concerns and deserve some reflection around citizenship, its removal  and international rights. The UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (CCPR), which has been ratified by many states, promises to ensure CCPR rights in equality and to ensure non-discrimination in general. A central distinction between country-born and naturalized citizens is the potential for exile of naturalized citizens. If citizenship has any meaning, it is hard to imagine a citizen who would not experience some reduction in the scope of his or her right to security of the person when that citizenship is removed. The threat from the possibility of consequential exile, deportation or removal will involve impairment of the right to security of the person. Such deportation may seriously impact family rights and childrenâs rights and in some cases it may run a risk of consequential imprisonment or torture or cruel or inhuman treatment. These possibilities compound the impairing of the right to security of the person. In Europe, the European Court of Human rights has established that removal of citizenship must have necessary procedural safeguards, including access to courts to challenge removal, and the seriousness of the consequences for the individual must also be examined â in particular the right to privacy, home and family life can be at issue. In the Americas, where OAS member states fall under the Inter-American human rights system, there is a right to nationality and the individual has a right to a simple effective court remedy for acts of authority limiting rights. In the 10 May 2017 case of Hassouna and 7 others, citation 2017 FC 473, the (Canadian) Federal Court found that removal of citizenship required a fair trial: an oral hearing before a court or tribunal when credibility is involved; a fair opportunity to state the case and know the case to be met; and an independent and impartial decision maker. Sections of the then Citizenship Act were declared inoperative on account of their violation of Canadian Bill of Rights s.2(e) that says no federal law can remove a fair hearing for the determination of a right. Shortly after the decision, the Canadian Parliament approved amendments to the Citizenship Act that ensure individuals have access to the Federal Court before their citizenship is removed. The amendments also limit the grounds for removal of citizenship to cases of fraud and misrepresentation. This means that issues like accusations of criminality and terrorist activity will be dealt with equally for all citizens, naturalised or native born, as the CCPR equality and non-discrimination requires. However, the judge in the Hassouna case failed to find that removal of citizenship impaired the right to security of the person protected by s.7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. (Everyone has the right to life, liberty, and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.) This is surprising because the consequence of citizenship removal in almost all the particular 8 cases involved a threat of some kind - such as exile - that I would have thought impaired the right to security of the person. The court acknowledged that other âequitable groundsâ needed to be addressed but did not recognize these as ârightsâ; for example there are family and childrenâs rights in the treaties Canada has ratified. The judgment referred questions to the higher Federal Court of Appeal. Turning to the United Kingdom, K2 was brought to the country as a small child with his refugee family from Sudan so he spent his formative years in UK society. In the United Kingdom, he had had a criminal conviction and he had breached his bond from that conviction by leaving the UK. In the case before the European Court he allegedly became involved in âterrorism-related activities linked to Al-Shabaabâ in Somalia. His wife at some point had left the UK, but returned to have their child â presumably now a UK citizen. The UK administratively removed K2âs citizenship while he was outside the country and then âexcludedâ him, preventing him from returning to the UK. Although outside the country, K2 was able to make submissions to the High Court for judicial review and appealed the review decision to the Court of Appeal. Since his case involved secret government information, he appealed to the Special Immigration Appeal Tribunal, âSIAC.â  This body limits the ability to know the case against one, and to respond to it, because only specially cleared lawyers can see the secret evidence itself. The European Court found that it had been possible to access the UK courts from overseas and that restrictions on family life were not disproportionate since family members could move and K2 had relatives in the Sudan.
The judgement in the K2 case of the European Court of Human Rights (K2 v the UK, Application no. 42387/13, 7 February 2017) was unfortunate because media such as  the Guardian newspaper in the UK interpreted it as a vindication of the controversial UK citizenship law. UK law allows naturalized citizens to have citizenship removed by the authorities while they are absent from the country if it is conducive to the public good. The authorities can then âexcludeâ them from the UK â essentially exiling a former citizen. The European Court is concerned with violations of European human rights rather than particular laws. So a decision can hardly be said to comment on a law, as UK newspapers assumed. The Court found no violation of K2âs rights given the particular facts of the case and the rights considered. To me, the UK law is discriminatory on its face against naturalised citizens. If K2 had been a native born citizen, the United Kingdom would have had to bring charges against him before the courts. This law targets a class of citizens for different treatment simply because it is convenient and cheap for the authorities to do so. But the possibility of exile for one and not the other is a huge difference. The law gives the administrative decisions immediate effect before the citizen has had an opportunity to respond to the case against him or her. This can add to the discrimination by placing the obstacle of exile in the way of full and equal access to the courts. The European Court sailed over the unequal treatment before the law for naturalised citizens on the technicality that the matter had not been put to the UK courts. It would impair rights less if the citizenship removal took effect only after a court examination with all the safeguards normally available to citizens. Best is not to have exile at all for any citizens. In the facts of the case, the UK secret tribunal with its lawyers and their security clearance stated in submissions put before the European Court that some evidence against K2 could withstand the criminal justice burden of proof. This implies that a less discriminatory criminal justice alternative to removal of citizenship could theoretically have been possible. K2 raised plausible concerns about the UK court hearings with impaired ability to participate before the UK courts but these issues were dismissed with the European Court seemingly deferring to the UK courts. Deferral is not good enough for a body concerned about the ensuring of rights. The Court sailed over restricted ability to know and respond to the case against him on account of his predicament in exile and the secret evidence. There is a prima facie problem of âequality of arms" here. Standing back, it is hard to believe that someone who has been raised in the United Kingdom from early childhood could be exiled without adverse effects â that is without rights impairment. He had refugee parents in the United Kingdom. We presume he is now separated from them. It is possible that his link to a refugee family may make his own forced use of Sudanese nationality risky. Sudan is likely to be less attractive for a family with young children than the United Kingdom. If his child is to benefit from the UK education and K2 is in Sudan, family life will be impaired. If his child is in Sudan, the childâs right to education will be impaired compared with other UK citizen children. Details of K2âs alleged activity in Somalia are not known - first because of the secrecy of the UK tribunal and second because K2 did not - or could not - put arguments against the public part of the UK evidence before the UK courts. There may or may not have been serious terrorism activities. The alleged terrorism could be working with an agency linked to Al-Shabaab that some believe is humanitarian, or it may be a working with a group involved in conflict with the Somali government. But then over the years, citizens have even gone to fight in foreign wars â Spain in the 1930s and Bosnia in the 1990s. Governments have their own views about foreign wars and foreign agencies. I like to think of human rights bodies as adding an international perspective. What stands out for me is the possibility that K2 was seriously disadvantaged in attempting to address a UK court from outside the country.  He says he feared communications could be intercepted by the Sudanese secret service. We know he no longer had UK citizenship and the possibility of fleeing to the UK. This indicates a person whose right to security of the person is impaired as well as the right to fair trial. The UK courts then the European Court glossed over the difficulties which most of us can only imagine of trying to argue oneâs national security case from overseas and from countries one is afraid of with access only to means such as Skype. Citizenship removal is a serious business. As a naturalised citizen, I am relieved Canada reformed its Citizenship Act so that citizenship will only be removed for fraud or misrepresentation â and then only after a court has examined the removal on a full range of grounds. I am pleased that Canada treats citizens equally with respect to what they do whether criminal or terror or national security related. As a British citizen I am ashamed of UK law that is an affront to citizenship and to equality before the law. It is shocking that the European human rights system appears to have no way of calling the UK law itself for what it is.

Investigation for Social Media and Proper Communication
The analytic outcomes provided by businesses such as Fizziology and twitter social media strategy template are becoming more common and necessary to social media strategy. Good information inform, educate, and confirm the work social media professionals perform on their respective platforms. Whatever the industry and social media part, research insights are crucial. This is not to say that every social networking strategy will return massive growth in engagement, effects, or audience size. Metrics, data collected by a web 2 . 0 professional in a systematic approach, allow the business or model in question to know what functioned, what didnât, and what to try and do differently next time. Social media authorities do not want to guess as well as assume anything on web 2 . 0, but without data in addition to research, you would be doing accurately that. Metrics are the statistics and points of information this validate social mediaâs position in the larger scheme connected with things for a business as well as agency, and show senior managing and key decision designers the impact of this form of transmission on their audiences.
Along with knowing the basics of what it means to become a researcher in social media, addititionally there is the constant challenge facing social networking professionals when it comes to keeping up-to-date on not just the changes in the market and platforms, but how you can analyze, collect, and statement the data. Facebook changes the algorithm constantly, and there are usually new pieces of content functions added to each platform which makes them a bit more complicated (e. g., Instagram Stories as well as Insights). With each article and feature added, it provides a brand new way to analyze, report, as well as discuss research findings as well as analyses.
Research in many ways is among the most challenging yet challenging functions in social media. We need to understand not only how to gather data, but also how to use information strategically. Social media allows you to create only one good first impression with the content, and research early in advance allows you to make sure this first sight is the best it can possibly possibly be.
Importance of Research for Web 2 . 0 and Strategic Communication
Research-the systematic gathering of information in a very scientific and objective approach to help answer questions-is definitely not black and white. It is a mixture of grays following a long continuum diverse attributes that make it hard to establish which method, service, podium, or metrics to use. That, along with changes on the tools, makes it difficult at times to help report actual insights this help drive the bottom line to get sales, revenue growth, neighborhood building, and lead generation regarding brands and users. Several metrics can mislead simply by showcasing large numbers, which can lure brands and professionals to believe things are going well when, actually they are not. Using data furnished by platforms such as Facebook in addition to Twitter can seem helpful, but the truth is are taking a risk by means of relying on someone elseâs records collection.
Social media managers have got to listen to what the data think before providing commentary on the the data mean. Content in addition to message strategies help develop stories, which then shift often the waves (influencing the talks and dialogue in the community that happen to be meaningful and resonate having audiences) through the clutter connected with noise that happens on social media marketing. Research, especially analytics, gives us with evidence of the impact and potential return these kinds of âwavesâ provide us. Did this article move the audience? Made it happen make an impact? Did the particular message truly resonate with all the audience in the way we needed it to? Without info, these waves are just enjoyment for a single moment in time. Still with data, these reports have a shelf life and that means for future implications, learnings, and practices for a model.
Data drives the âpay to playâ game to get social media professionals. In order for audience to see content in a newsfeed on platforms such as Zynga, Instagram, and Twitter, companies and others have to pay for subsidized posts, ads, or changes. Every time a sponsored post or perhaps ad comes forward, including the branded hashtags for Despicable Me 3 or a great influencer-sponsored ad on Instagram, it was paid for by the paid brand. Each paid kind of content is approached in different ways. One is bought and paid by a movie studio (e. g., Pixar), and the additional is sponsored by thirdparty endorsers and influencers, that #ad is attached to this article. In most cases, it is easy to determine which usually content has been paid for.
Plenty of businesses have gone this way to ensure audiences to see their articles come forward. Otherwise, the metrics will tell a different story, and this brings forth the level of accountability needed to determine whether or not sponsored messages have an impact on the goals and objectives of campaigns and social media initiatives.
One benefit of metrics for social media platforms and third-party companies is to capture the essence involving audiences on a level that is extremely detailed and specific. Having access to what people are willing to share about themselves on various social media platforms-what they are doing to engage, converse, and react- really drives brands, organizations, and media outlets to specific social media platforms with established marketing and advertising budgets. These insights help paint a very clear picture of usersâ personas (e. g., unique characteristics that make up individuals) and likes, motivational factors, and other audience segmentation characteristics to help classify them into different audience categories (demographics, psychographics, etc . ). These data provide insights, which then spark inventive message strategies, ideas, along with targeting practices not available about other established communication programs. Unlike traditional media, social websites has allowed brands to never only explore the basic market segments, but expand their very own exploration to what people similar to, what posts and models they engage with, and their all round network of trust along with influence on the social media programs. Social media professionals are able to discover more audience behaviors along with actions on these programs than with traditional media.
You will find a difference between advanced metrics, such as click-through rates (how many times people click on a connection to navigate to another website) and behavioral metrics (what actions people are taking on public media), and what we call up vanity metrics, or metrics that make all of us feel fantastic, but really do not tell us everything in the process. For example , the number of men and women you follow on Instagram, or who follow anyone, is considered a vanity metric. Conduct metrics focus on advanced metrics, like conversions, that support tell the story of the buyer journey on social media (e. g., how many people bought a item or ticket to a live concert after seeing a post upon Facebook). Researchers can tell more about what happened and prove that content and presence upon social media led to followersâ activities, which helps validate the actual argument for investing in social networking at the senior leadership degree.
Reporting vanity metrics with regard to social media efforts does offer benefits (Dawley, 2017). Dawley (2017) suggests that businesses utilize vanity metrics for proper purposes. First, identifying fans (people or brand trading accounts on social media who are monitoring your activity on a specified platform) gives social media experts (or brands and customers they are representing or operating with) a snapshot of the potential audience members. This does not mean that followers are totally guaranteed to view your specified content, but the advanced metrics allow you to see this in more detail. Comments and stocks are also considered vanity metrics, yet they do serve a purpose by simply informing you how make an effort to responsive people are to your written content and actions, and how that they feel about the content. As Dawley (2017) stated regarding social websites vanity metrics, if the merely reason you are reporting all these metrics is to make yourself experience amazing, then they are not gratifying the complete picture. Vanity metrics are like the movie trailer for the blockbuster film: They do not notify the whole story of the brand. If you report vanity metrics, you will need to connect them back to fixed objectives that fulfill attitudinal and behavioral measurements. How can the increased level of responses and sentiments help the manufacturer on social media? If it is stuck just using business conversions (whether not really you made a purchase based on that which you were shown on public media) and email or maybe YouTube subscriptions, then there is a rationale for this. Primarily, vanity metrics can be contained in a report, but only if they can be tied to other metrics along with campaign or social media goals for a brand, person, or even agency.
For example , if Pepsi wants to gauge whether crucial audience members in Chicago, il are aware of its Coca Soda Freestyle machines at Hamburger King, it may want to link its objective of brand recognition to mentions or labels of the brand on social media systems such as Twitter, Facebook, as well as Instagram. At the same time, Disney might review comments, ratings, as well as replies on its Disneyland social media accounts to evaluate the client experience at the new Guardians of the Galaxy attraction in Disneyland Park in Ca. Advanced metrics tied to this particular, however , could be viewed to find out customer response, frequency associated with responses per hour, geolocation replies, and influence of customers on social media.
We can obtain further insight into the desire for research by examining work to increase brand awareness by means of 84 Lumber during the 2017 Super Bowl. Although the raw lumber company had never carried out a campaign of this degree before, it launched a plan that had nothing to complete with selling lumber, but alternatively focused on building a name to get 84 Lumber as a corporation of opportunity (Ward, 2017), and released a essential charged immigration-themed ad this sparked considerable social media thrill (Peterson, 2017). According to Peterson (2017), 84 Lumber proven a website to showcase the whole ad, which received a lot more than 6 million requests one hour after it aired throughout the Super Bowl. Other crucial mentions (naming and marking a brand or user manage on social media) arrived at 99, 000 across Myspace, Twitter, and Instagram (Peterson, 2017). In addition , Brunnerworks, the actual agency that worked with 84 Lumber, reported that Offer Age listed the offer as one of the top five aired over the Super Bowl. The offer also made it into the core media with a Cheetos-themed skit on Saturday Night Live (Brunnerworks, 2017). If 84 Raw lumber wanted to achieve brand understanding, it was able to accomplish this with this campaign. The attitudinal and attitudinal measurements in connection with social media (purchasing the companyâs products, increasing positive emotions about its reputation on the internet, etc . ) are still to become determined.
Many brands wish to measure awareness for their services and products, and specific platforms will help accomplish this task. Zagat, the user-generated restaurant review site, combined with Google and Huffington Post to share food encounters with its users during the #FoodTripping campaign (Shorty Awards, 2017a). In this campaign, Zagat a new microsite (a specific web page dedicated to the campaign specifically) and used Periscope to have stream its teamâs emotions in different states. The dwell videos would showcase these kind of experiences on Periscope, nevertheless the team would also generate content (photos, posts, and so on ) using the #FoodTripping hashtag on the microsite (Shorty Accolades, 2017a). The results were extremely positive for the brand, causing 143 live broadcasts inside 56 days, 540, 000 engagements across all social media marketing platforms, and 2 . a few million views across Zagat and Google (Shorty Accolades, 2017a).
The amount of money being allocated to research and social media will be astronomical. Brands and online businesses are spending millions on equipment and services to help acquire, monitor, listen to, and examine insights emerging on social media marketing. As social media professionals, we have to decide which metrics are relevant to what weâre trying to accomplish in our social media practices. This chapter will explore the need to do research and best practices for using research to meet goals. Contemporary social media professionals are able to listen for trends, monitor key metrics important to a company in a social media campaign, and link both science and art by using data collected in a strategic manner.
