So like, reading Maximum Ride again after like 4-6 years and like, there are so many things I’m questioning. For starter Manga reader only because I have this issue of not being able to read other forms of something I’ve already read. Brain kinda shuts down. So like
1) The whole Max, Martina (Martinez?), and Ella thing is just so strange. For starters Max is just awful. Prioritizing a random girl being cornered and has an easy escape route (Max took it after all) over your 6 year old sister who is in the hands of actual mad scientist who you know has actively done shitty unethical things is just, why?! Angel could’ve been saved just a bit earlier if you listened to Fang! But also the whole Martinez has something to do with the school but then it’s completely forgotten.
2) Max leaving the Blind guy and the 8 Year Old alone because “Angel (who is to young to know how to escape the school) might escape and come back here”. Gazzy has little combat experience because he is either told to run/hide or uses bombs and Iggy is BLIND!
3) Iggy really goes between I have the best hearing in the flock to I have normal human hearing. Like sometimes he can hear Erasers (like only twice?) or the homeless people in the subway and most of the time either he’s surprised by them (angel’s kidnapping or the ambush when Max and Fang leave) or Angel finds then before him (the two children). Like, JP make it’s consistent! Let Iggy be the Flock’s alarm so when they don’t have him in the group they suffer more casualties! Especially during when Erasers become robots so Angel becomes useless (like de buff the girl honesty)
4) speaking of Iggy. He has been shown enough times that he’s really REALLY smart. Building bombs, being able to remember recipes to cook, learning and mapping places out (E house and Anne’s place), yet JP literally doesn’t expand or utilize it to its fullest. Iggy could probably be the Flocks brain but no~, he’s to blind to be the flocks brain, let’s have Fang (the right hand man, second command of the flock, has invisibility powers and (I just learned) immortality) and Angel (child with telepathy, mind control, shapeshifting, and probably other things) be the brains and Max (leader and golden child) have moments here and there. The most I’ve seen of Iggy utilizing his brains was lock picking or making bombs/planning out traps. I could be missing some but JP makes it so hard to know.
5) the severe infantilism of Iggy
6) Gazzy still has no new power unlike everyone else (but Iggy’s are pretty shitty because they all are powers to “help him see without him actually seeing”). Like let him have telepathy or maybe a way that only him and Angel can communicate each other.
7) Nudge. Like she isn’t as bad as Iggy and definitely not the worst like Gazzy, but god she’s still really poorly written. She has this whole thing of not wanting to be a freak and wanting to find her family and wanting to be normal and not having to run all the time but every single one of these just stops on a dead note! It like stops existing after like 2-3 chapters and never brought up. Like she’s the most interesting girl in the flock but just so butchered.
8) their looks. Ok I’m not gonna harp so badly on the Manga artist because she is Korean and Korean beauty standards and all that is just bad in general but that’s just cultural differences. But one thing I never understand was that makeup transformation. Angel who has short hair suddenly has hair that goes below her neck. Nudge’s bleached streak somehow stays even though her natural hair should’ve shown by the 9 manga vol. Fang who always was shown with straight hair now has really curly hair. That’s not how hair works and let’s not talk about Iggy and those weird dark tips.
9) Fax and Ella/Iggy (which I learned was canon. I was wondering where all those Ella/Iggy stories came from) I don’t hate straight ships. I just hate these straight ships.
10) oh poorly written trauma handled even worse my beloved. Your telling me Iggy, the one who was awake the entire operation on his eyes doesn’t have trauma. Your telling me Fang, who almost died to an Eraser doesn’t have trauma. Your telling me Max, the one who continuously has a voice in her head, a chip in her shoulder, seeing an Eraser in the mirror doesn’t have trauma?! Angel?!
But like I could continue because there is so much but, there where definitely things I liked. I like how Iggy was drawn. Out of all the characters he looked always bony and skinny and long. Like even next to Fang who is supposed to be the same height he looks so twiggy and tall. Gazzy was so interesting because he was that grey “I suffered through the school but I was also way to young to remember” and I wish it was expanded more. I liked the Ari arc if you ignore every other Ari part in the story. Total was nice if we found nice as before he talked.
Like not to be the paranoid one but if I was in the flocked I would be questioning everything. A Gazzy photo from an abandoned apartment? They could’ve stuck it there after knowing their research was stolen just to trap the flock. Anna watching a new about Iggy’s parents? She purposely put it on so Iggy will be removed. Erasers still finding the flock? Did anyone thing that the others might have chips in them, especially when Fang, Gazzy, and Iggy where attacked. Also how does Fang still have his laptop when he was captured by the institute?

i would physically break my bones if you wrote a little thing about simon waking up with joanie in the night 🥹
Thunder
I take your Simon waking up with Joanie, and raise you Mama Freyja waking up with her :D (p.s. Simon holds his babies like this, and you can't tell me otherwise) << Previous | Next >>
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Freyja flinched at the sharp cry as the monitor on her nightstand crackled to life following a loud boom of thunder. She stayed still momentarily, waiting to see if Joan would lull herself back to sleep as she patted Arthur’s back.
After a brief break, assumingly where Joanie allowed herself to take a breath, the wailing presumed.
Simon’s hand trailed up her thigh, his thumb dragging across her hip. He was awake, as always during nighttime feedings, but had been laying down while she fed and burped their son. “Do you want me to get her?” he asked, leaning into her shoulder and nuzzling her neck now that he had pushed himself up.
She smiled softly at the gentle kisses against her throat, pressing into them. “No, I’ll handle it. Take Artie?”
“I’ll finish with ‘im downstairs.” Simon shifted Art from her lap, laying the baby, stomach down, across his forearm with his head up toward his elbow. His feet landed on either side of his big hand, engulfing one of his chunky little thighs. “Alright, pup, time for a little father-son bonding,” he whispered, and his footsteps disappeared out of the room and down to the kitchen.
Freyja followed shortly after, her slippers scuffing as she barely picked up her tired feet. Joanie’s nursery was right next to theirs, making the walk short. When the door creaked open at her presence, the toddler’s sobbing softened but continued as she reached over the wall of her crib, little fingers making grabby hands in Frey’s direction.
“Mumma!”
“Hi baby,” she whispered, smiling softly as she approached the bed. “What happened? Did the thunder wake you up?”
She carefully drew her fingers through the baby’s delicate curls, taking care to detangle any knots she found. Frey had noticed that her once tight ringlets were losing their body, and starting to melt into loose waves. She had a sneaking suspicion that their daughter’s hair would eventually forgo all of its texture and end up pin-straight. At least then, it would be more manageable.
Joan jerked her head away with a whine, pouty lip jutting out as she bounced with her knees. The frustrated display and the look on her chubby little face would’ve been funny if Freyja weren’t so tired. She pointed outside of her bed, “Gaz frug.”
Gazzy was Joan’s beloved stuffed frog, clad with a baseball cap with a Union Jack patch on the front. One could take a wild guess at who Gazzy the frog came from. And there he was, just next to Freyja’s feet. She bent down with a soft hum, plucking her lovie off the floor. “You kicked Gazzy out! What happened?” she asked, bopping the toddler with it.
Even with her friend returned, Joanie pouted again and held her arms up, making grabby fingers with her free hand. “Up, Mumma,” she whimpered, her big brown eyes pleading.
Not very eager to deny a request at three o’clock in the morning, Freyja grabbed her soft felt blanket (courtesy of Mrs. MacTavish) from the bottom of her crib and draped it around her daughter. Joan automatically wrapped her arms around her mum’s neck as she lifted the baby to her chest, one arm under her and the other hand guiding her head to her shoulder.
Her hair still smelt like her baby shampoo from her bedtime bath. Frey inhaled the scent, placing gentle kisses against her baby’s temple at the same time. Neither she nor Simon had a tendency to get annoyed with their babies waking up throughout the night. Freyja was thrilled every instance she was able to comfort her children. She always told herself that every time Joan or Artie cried for them was a reminder of how loved and needed they were.
And if that meant getting up at three o’clock in the morning just to hold her daughter, then so be it.
“I love you, baby.”
“I lub you, Mumma.”

concept for an MR fanfic that's been rattling around in my head for a few years:
at the beginning of book 2, it actually is the FBI that finds the flock at the hospital, not just itex in a trench coat. the FBI is very interested in these bird kids, and they see a unique opportunity with fang's injury.
they fake fang's death and whisk him off to a secret lab to study him.
the rest of the flock—devastated by fang's "death," unsure how they want to proceed—goes to live with anne (who, again, actually works for the FBI in this version), with the promise that they will be studied "non-invasively" and given grief counseling (which they all think is bullshit, especially max, but this is their most stable option at the moment).
fang is studied intensively while recovering from his near-fatal injury. (i know he recovered in, like, two days in canon. i'm not doing that here.) someone from the FBI tells him that the flock thinks he's dead; no one is coming to save him. he's not sure if he believes them. most of the time, he's too exhausted to think about it.
max grows more and more restless with being tied down, so to speak, but the rest of the flock seems to appreciate the momentary stability, especially while they're still grieving. she tolerates it as best she can, thinking that it would be much easier to tolerate if fang were here.
slowly, though, max grows suspicious of anne—overhearing strange snippets of phone calls, not believing when anne just smiles and says everything is fine. max and iggy snoop around in anne's office, and that's when they stumble upon the truth: fang never died. he's been alive this whole time.
cue the badass rescue scene, with iggy and gazzy's bombs wreaking havoc on the government lab. fang is weak from the experiments when they find him, but they manage to break him out and make their escape.
once they're finally far away and safe (as safe as they ever are, anyway) there's a teary, heartfelt reunion. fang cries, too, because he wasn't sure whether the flock would ever find him.
the end :)

I Think (Therefore I Am)
Day 3 - The Whole Flock
#maxride hc prompt week
title cred: therefore i am by billie eilish
Tagging: @maximum-ride
They’re prey animals, essentially. The Flock is mostly human, but they’re all two percent bird. That has a lot of impacts; more than just the wings, and bones, and healing. It impacts every facet of their psyche. They’re prey animals. They choose flight more than fight. Sometimes they even choose freeze.
Not one of them can help it. Two percent is a marginal change to a human’s DNA. The Flock is just as close to being a bunch of bananas as they are to humans, and every one of them has that thought as they grow older. Especially when Jeb starts the science lessons and tells them that humans share upwards of ninety-eight percent of their DNA with bananas. Jeb had a hard time consoling the ones that thought that was horrifying - Max, Fang, Gaz. He had an even harder time getting the ones that thought it was cool to stop talking about it. Iggy, Nudge, and Angel had made it a game to bring back bananas from every supply run they were allowed to go on, which led to a house-wide banana ban.
Even after Jeb died, bananas were still banned in the house. That’s what Max is thinking about as she stares through her cage doors at Jeb. She’s glad that the rest of the Flock is asleep. She doesn’t want them to know he’s alive. That he’s a traitor.
She spits in his face. For a split second, she sees the true Jeb. The smile falls and anger rises in his eyes. She sees him as a Whitecoat more than the man who rescued her. Max doesn’t want Gaz, or Angel to see that. Nudge had checked out of looking up to Jeb a long time ago, but the fledglings still loved him. Called him Dad. “Fuck you,” The thought of the fledglings keeps her voice down but she has to grit her teeth to keep the volume low.
“Max, that’s not how you talk to me.” He opens her cage door slowly like he’s expecting her to launch at him. She had escaped, once, a long time ago. She had shattered a Whitecoat’s orbital floor, broken her jaw, fractured her skull. Max is sure Jeb remembers that. It was the same day they blinded Iggy. She wants him to remember because she was only eight, then. She’s fourteen now. Lethal.
But they’re prey animals, essentially. Every human instinct to survive is multiplied by the instincts of their bird DNA. Max doesn’t fight, she doesn’t run. She freezes. Her eyes are wide and her breathing slows until she’s stone-still. Jeb reaches his hand in and she tracks it with her eyes. When he pulls her out of the cage, Max doesn’t fight back. He loads her onto a dolly because she won’t walk, and as Jeb wheels her out of the room she catches Fang’s eyes.
He turns away, probably thinking about bananas.

i’m all for genz!flock but just imagine the flock sitting in this restaurant... it’s the 70s... everything is a lot shittier politically than it is right now but just imagine them having hope for the future...... no weird global warming plot line........ milkshakes............ nudge wearing a poodle skirt.................(i know poodle skirts are technically from the 50s but let me live ok) and just.....,,,, maybe actually recognizing the fact that nudge, max, and (maybe????) fang are not in fact white and also not straight because james is wrong they’re all gay in some capacity and that’s that on that................... but anyways imagine actual realistic issues tied in with hiding from white coats........ extreme police corruption.......(even tho that’s still true today but bear with me k)..... racism and sexism and homophobia..... maybe even stonewall......... the vietnam war................ just a lot of shit but like god just imagine that like. damn i feel like i was just possessed by the deity of good content and extreme validity

i was thinking about my nudge-centric rewrite idea and how i changed a lot of the plot in order to highlight her character, and it got me wondering how i'd rewrite MR with any of the others as main characters. so here's how i'd rewrite the beginning of TAE with each of the other flock members.
angel: i don't think much would change with her, since the inciting incident is already her getting kidnapped. there would just be more of her at the school i guess. tbh, a lot of the plot throughout the series already centers on angel anyway lol. she's literally got 2 of the books named after her.
gazzy: there would be more emphasis on his feelings about angel getting kidnapped. he and iggy would still be left behind, but he'd convince iggy that they should leave and go after the others. shenanigans ensue. he'd probably also play a bigger part in getting angel out of the school. (i know he sorta did in canon, but i also think it's bullshit that he and iggy didn't get caught AND max didn't even mention it, and that the whitecoats just happened to drag the others outside in time for iggy and gazzy to show up with those hawks, etc. so i'd change that whole part.)
iggy: ok i definitely need to put more thought into this one bc iggy is a very complex character, he's just not written as one. there'd be a LOT more attention on max's (and other's) ableism against him, and he'd probably have an outburst about it pretty early on—but i'm not sure if that outburst would actually make everyone stop treating him like a child, even if they say they're going to treat him more normally. he'd contemplate leaving, but also be scared to bc obviously he doesn't have anyone else, and he was never actually taught how to function as a blind person out in the world. (he's gonna get a cane. i think he should have one.)
but i think a rewrite with him would go kinda the same way as gazzy's plot-wise where they both end up going after the flock even before the erasers come back for them again, and they have their own shenanigans before reuniting with the others.
fang: plot-wise i'm not sure if much would change. emotionally, i think he'd be more pissed at max for leaving him and nudge when they're all supposed to be on a mission to save angel. he'd also be more stressed about being responsible for nudge, and probably have a heart attack when she tries to go find her parents because they're supposed to be lying low lol. he'd still outwardly act pretty stoic, but it would be super interesting to actually have him as a narrator.
nudge: i don't think i ever posted my plot ideas for hers, actually. hers has some more extreme changes and sends her on her own adventure: she gets kidnapped instead of angel, and becomes friends with some of the other experiments at the school while she's there. the flock takes a pretty long time to get to her, though, and she later finds out that it's because they were, uh, kind of procrastinating on it. (this is how i think the canon characters would act, not the fanon versions.) she gets pretty upset about it, and when she eventually escapes the school, she goes off on her own with her new experiment friends.
if i thought about it more, i could probably come up with more drastic changes for all of them that would highlight their character arcs more, but these are the kind of surface level changes i'd make (except for nudge, which i've put a lot more thought into, obviously).

It’s True That All You Know Is All That You Are
Day 2 - Nudge, Gaz, and Angel
#maxridehcpromptweek
title cred: stay by post malone
tagging: @maximum-ride
Nudge thinks that she’s the oldest for a long time. Well, as much as a four year old can. That’s how old she was when Gaz was brought into the room she’d grown up in, unceremoniously shoved into her cage.
He was only one year old when that happened, chubby and bright-eyed. Nudge remembers his wings were all down feather and how he’d probably leave them all over when he molted for the first time. She remembered that she wasn’t looking forward to it, but now, at eleven years old and tucked away in a house with the rest of her Flock, she keeps one of his downy feathers hidden away in a book.
She’s rather fond of him, probably because of her position as his caretaker until they were moved to be with Max, Fang, and Iggy. For a long time, it was Nudge and Gaz against the world, and she would be lying if she tries to say she doesn’t miss that. Even as he gets older, becomes more independent, and wants to be as grown-up as Max and Fang, and Iggy, he’s still her first friend. The first one she saw that was like her.
Her first flock-mate.
Of course, with Gaz comes Angel. Nudge doesn’t mind Angel, she just tip-toes around her. The mind-reading thing is weird, and she doesn’t like her thoughts not being her own thoughts. After escaping the school, she dove headfirst into being able to own things. She likes having things that are hers. She writes her name in all of the books she pilfers on supply runs. The thought of not even being able to own her own thoughts makes unease settle in her stomach. (Of course, Nudge knows that Angel picks up on that, too. It’s hell.)
But, really, she doesn’t mind Angel. Especially since the girl makes Gaz so happy. They’re the only blood-related siblings and it shows. Gaz and Angel both have light eyes, light skin, and light hair. Nudge doesn’t want to feel jealous, but she’s only eleven. She can’t help it. Not of how they look - no. She’d come to love her dark brown skin, curled hair, and hazel eyes years ago. She’s jealous of their bond. It’s clear to everyone in the Flock that Gaz and Angel are closer to each other than anyone else, and that it’s because they share parents.
Nudge wants that. But also she wants her Gazzy back. He hasn’t let her call him that in years - it’s just Gaz now. It hurts Nudge’s feelings because she named him. She’d given him the name Gazzy. But she doesn’t tell him. She doesn’t tell anyone, not even Max. Despite being called The Nudge Channel - Max and Fang aren’t as slick as they think they are - she doesn’t spill a lot of her feelings.
She sighs and puts the book she was reading back, setting into the window seat that overlooks the canyon that they live on. Max, Fang, and Iggy are no doubt somewhere doing something together, which makes sense. The three of them were together for even longer than Nudge and Gaz were. They spend most of their days planning a supply run, reading to each other, working on some technique that Nudge doesn’t care for.
Sometimes she tries to join them because she’s the fourth oldest and it makes sense, but they always tell her to go play with Gaz and Angel. She doesn’t want to. It feels weird. One of the romance books she loves, that she read until Fang had to fix the spine with duct tape for her, called that weird feeling Third Wheeling. She doesn’t like it. She doesn’t like playing with Gaz and Angel because they’re so protective of each other. In every game, they’re a team and it’s Angel And Gaz Against Nudge.
The feeling is sour in her stomach. She can see Gaz and Angel flying outside - it’s the first warm day of summer and she knows the sun feels amazing on their wings as they fly. They’re playing tag which is a game that Jeb had taught them before he had disappeared. Nudge wishes that they had asked her to play with them, but she knows she would have said no.
She’s in the middle, somewhere between child and teenager, and with no real place in the Flock. Max, Fang, and Iggy think she’s annoying (because she hides her insecurities with incessant chatter) and Gaz wants to spend as much time with his sister as he can. Angel knows that Nudge is hesitant around her and keeps her distance.
Nudge wraps her wings around herself and hopes that the layers of feathers will muffle her soft, mournful crying.
