Yep, all in my head! I sort of have to though for my fic. One of the reasons that longfics can get so complicated from the author’s perspective! I should beatable be using that brain space for something more productive, like my university classes, but tbh being an English major there isn’t that much memorization.
And yes, it’s extremely gay. Splatoon 3 was a really big breakthrough, too, because they eliminated gender selection. They give you an unlabeled outline of two body types for each species (subtly implied but not stated to be AMAB and AFAB bodies). Hairstyles which were previously restricted by gender are now available regardless. And gear items (clothes) that previously changed by gender are now split into separate gear items so you can choose one regardless of gender. So I can put my AMAB Octoling in a skirt and Princess crown!
Also, Nintendo has released official ship art of Agent 3 X Agent 8, as a het relationship of course. But for players who create their player characters as the same gender (which I’m pretty sure like 95% of people do bc people usually play characters that match their own gender), this is actually a gay ship. And Nintendo themselves present the playable Agents all as female in almost every single official art except these ship arts.
Splatoon is also one of the very few fandoms on AO3 with a majority of fics in the F/F category! The Splatoon canon is generally very feminist.
You can also buy an in-game decorative item that fans are almost certain is a yuri manga.

Like… come on. There’s really no other explanation for this.
ANYWAY! THE BANDS!
I don’t actually know all that much about the bands, but like I said there’s certain sectors of the fandom that know all of the lore and solely focus on content and shipping among the bands. But to cover the basics…
Off the Hook consists of Pearl, a trust-fund-kid pop princess rapper who goes into the middle of the wilderness to scream-sing. (She’s edgy like that.) Marina, having recently escaped from the Octarian Domes after the battle between the original Agent Three and DJ Octavio, hears Pearl and approaches her. They struggle to understand what they other is saying because of a language barrier, but Marina asks Pearl to start a band. Pearl listens to one of Marina’s songs called Ebb and Flow (Demo), and Pearl is convinced. Localizations disagree on whether Pearl is unaware that Marina is an Octoling or just that she was in the Octarian military, but either way this information is leaked during the DLC and Pearl takes it more or less in stride.
Many people think that the shoes shopkeeper Bisk is actually DJ Real Sole, the artists credited for the music that plays in the shops in Splatoon 2.
Turquoise October, the band credited with the music in the story modes of the first two games, sometimes uses reversed clips of some of the Squid Sisters songs.
SashiMori uses ancient recordings of human voices in their music (it’s quite disconcerting).
SashiMori’s vocalist, named Paul, is ten years old.
Everyone hates the recently-localized names of Diss Pair. Their Japanese names are Warabi and Ikkan, and they were localized as Mashup and Quinn.
Also, Ikkan used to be part of the Squid Squad, a band in the first Splatoon that produced the most iconic Splatoon song, “Splattack!”
Dedf1sh is a sanitized Octoling who produces the music heard in the Octo Expansion DLC stages. You can find entire fics about her. Her existence stretches the limits of what Sanitized Octolings can be, implying that they can still retain some form of free will and creativity.
ω3, the Salmonid band credited with the music heard in Salmon Runs, is a pun on the nutrient Omega-3, which is found abundantly in fish.
One of the Chirpy Chips band members, Harmony, now “works” at the general store Hotlantis in Splatoon 3.
That’s all I know off the top of my head.
They also have animated live concerts you can attend in Japan. I want to go to one so bad! 😫

It’s a wild fandom.
And of course I still haven’t touched on the manga or any sort of fanon, but I think that’s enough for now. If you really want to hear more lmk and I’ll keep going lmao
OH SHIT I ALSO FORGOT ABOUT INNER AGENT 3! But like I said, for another day.
Damn idk what I expected but i did not know squids dont have bones tbh
lmaoooooo I can explain
(My alt blog is called “Squids Don’t Have Bones” in case anyone’s confused)
It doesn’t really mean “Squids don’t have bones”; it’s shorthand for “Inklings don’t have bones.” This is a running joke in the Splatoon canon and especially in TPWCH because Inklings are canonically entirely made of ink and have no bones, but sometimes they’ll break the fourth wall by mentioning bones. Something like “Ow, I hit my funny bone.” “What do you mean, you don’t have any bones?”
But beyond that, it’s a reference to a specific post. A post that has been glaring at me from my Drafts literally since the very first day I started the blog. I guess I have no close but to post it now.
