can i ask what is kinyarn 😭

I think it's about time I explained Kin-Yarn to the new generation instead of jokingly brushing it off and making people do their own research.

Please note I will be spelling Kin-Yarn with the hyphen, as god (me) intended. Kinyarn is still hella valid and the more commonly used name. I also wont be going into my interpretations too much since it's complicated and long i do not actually ship it i promise.

Kin-Yarn is the greatest Kirby ship of all time. It's the ship between Yin-Yarn from Kirby's Epic Yarn, and Kine the fish from hell. There isn't anything canon for it, these characters have never and will never interact in HAL's eyes. However we, the fans, know better.

After reading my thesis I'd strongly recommend checking out all of the content the long dead kin-yarn fandom has to offer. Most of it is like, really old, since those around for Kin-Yarn's inception have either left tumblr, moved onto new and cooler fandoms, or don't think it's that funny anymore. (It isn't because it's a fandom in-joke from two years ago.) Thankfully there are many great relics of the past, of the days when new Kin-Yarn content showed up every like five posts on your dash. AO3 has most of the Kin-Yarn fanfiction that's been written, but some of it is hidden away within blog archives and dusty links to google docs. Kin-Yarn videos also exist, including some (two) AMVs and the classic Kin-Yarn ASMR made by yours truly. The Kin-yarn/Kinyarn tag on tumblr.com also has a lot of posts so just go through that.

I. HUMBLE BEGINNINGS

Kin-Yarn was made at some point in October 2020. Out there on the internet there is a site called FanficMaker. It's a pretty basic website. I don't know exactly how the creators found the material to make this, but there is a okay-ish sized pool of sets.

These sets are fairly generic stories, with the program plugging in the names of characters you input into specific slots. There's a surprising amount of variation between these sets, but after you play with the site too long you start seeing the same ones over and over.

So Voiddemon a few years ago found this website, and decided to make some fanfiction and upload it to tumblr.com. On one occasion, the website generated the sentence "It was Yin-Yarns gay wedding party..." It didn't say who he was marrying, but I found it funny and uploaded it to tumblr.com. On a separate day, in a separate prompt, I put Kine in and it gave me a similar result. "Meanwhile, Susies mind was wondered back to the past. It was Kines gay wedding party..." I also found this funny because. Kine. And uploaded it to tumblr.com.

I will now introduce Ninikins (Who has since changed their username and moved on from the Kirby fandom), who suggested that the two of them were getting married to each other. Everyone in my circle online at the time found the idea hilarious because.

From here everyone went crazy and just started. Kin-yarning all over the place.

II. Fan Interpretations

Memetaknight, creator of the greatest Kin-yarn fanfiction of all time Yiracle (It's my favorite :shrug:) created a Kin-Yarn Essay. Today it is a great time capsule that brings us into the culture around Kin-yarn in the past. It's just over two years old now so happy birthday Kin-Yarn essay. It delves into the two primary interpretations around the ship. I'll just quote the most important bits of it since I'm lazy you can go check my sources ok.

"A common Kin-Yarn characterization is to ship either both brothers with Kine (as a V shape relationship), or just one of the brothers with Kine... This interpretation has many specific tropes... but it has one extremely interesting idea that is unique to it. In the spirit of Kirby’s Epic Yarn’s final battle... it has been theorized that something similar could apply to Kin-Yarn, in which the brothers would catfish Kine .. Kine, either on purpose or on accident."

"The other interpretation sees the yarn body previously mentioned as a third entity... which is referred as Yin-Yarn separate from the needle brothers. This characterization idea arises from the fact Yin-Yarn is referred as a singular character"

There is a third interpretation that stems from the two of these, which is that both the Yarn Body or puppet is in love with Kine and so is at least one of the knitting needles.

Often in Kin-Yarn works, it is unclear which one of these the creator interprets the ship as, since artwork and fics include all three characters (The puppet and the two needles) with no clear distinction between them. A distinction being drawn is more commonly in artwork, due to the nature of the medium.

III. Love and Marriage

For the most part, Kin-Yarn is portrayed as a perfect relationship. With Kine and Yin-Yarn being madly in love. The nature of one being a hero and another being a villain is not often explored, but when it is explored the most common interpretation is Kine accepts Yin-Yarn despite his past wrongdoings. Oftentimes Yin-Yarn will reform and become good for Kine.

III A. Who are Prince Fluff's Parents?

Prince Fluff (Also from Kirby's Epic Yarn) has no stated or seen parents within the series. Originally KEY was called "Keito no Fluff", and featured Prince Fluff himself as the protagonist. He was supposed to be searching for his mother, but this was removed from KEY so he has. No parents.

A semi-common headcanon within the Kirby fandom is that Prince Fluff was created by Yin-Yarn, which is what originally spawned this interpretation. A few perceptive Kin-Yarnians noticed that Kine and Prince Fluff have the same exact color scheme. Like it's kind of uncanny actually Kine is just a little desaturated.

This caused the creation of the Yamily Tree, an. absurdly large family tree but it's kinda bloated and not that funny anymore. Here's the condensed version

Usually Prince Fluff is not actually biologically related to Kine. Since that has horrifying implications. Instead it implies that after Kine and Yin-Yarn are married, they adopt Prince Fluff (Which he usually isn't happy with).

III B. KINE'S DIVORCES

Ok so Kine Kirby is married to Mine canonically. However we haven't seen her in a very long time, and in Kirby Clash Kine is sleeping on a bench. Leading to the idea that he and Mine got a divorce. This is accepted by everyone who ships Kin-Yarn because Kine cheating on his wife isn't a laughing matter, but Kine leaving his wife for Yin-Yarn is. (Usually the interpretation is Mine leaving Kine)

Even though Kin-Yarn is interpreted as perfect most times, other interpretations are that after they get married the relationship becomes volatile. At the core the two still love each other, but due to one reason or another they've grown apart. This is best shown in the Kin-Yarn Fanfiction named after the ships national anthem, "The One That Got Away" on AO3 by HeavyLobster77.

This is very popular both for the drama and because it's very funny.

IV. Historical Kin-Yarn Events & Holidays

-The Great Kin-Yarn Porn Scare of 1969 Someone uploaded an explicit Kin-Yarn fic on AO3 tagged as explicit with very SUS tags. It wasn't real though and the fic is just among us.

-Kin-Yarn Discord There's a Kin-Yarn discord out there that's dead as hellll and I'm. Not sharing a link good luck finding it

-Kin-Yarn WORLD TOUR I blazed a Kin-Yarn post when tumblr Blaze first came out. Spending real money to force people to look upon Kin-Yarn was a powerful move.

-Feared Anon creating the best AUs of all time Kinederella (Technically theres no real au just funny images)

-Kin-Yarn Blog Wars ok i cannot find many of the blogs but for a bit everyone made blogs dedicated to loving or hating kin-yarn. Also KinYarn-Archives was created at some point around this time I think.

-Kin-Yarn BANNED from the Shipping Wiki Tumblr user Kaissauce tried to create a page on the shipping Wikipedia, but it was deleted by the mods lmao. Here's what the page originally looked like.

OH RIGHT MY ITERATION

Okay so these are just the concept info pages I made and these are not the final designs though, I’ve updated some designs A TON already

OKAY this iteration is called

This is Cassius Casey (Kirby) Jones, he’s the first person I designed for the AU and his design does not look like this at all anymore. He’s got Japanese heritage from one side of the fam and Mexican on the other. No real reason except I wanna push my Spanglish onto him. Also he’s gay.

This is April O’Neil, she’s the second person I designed but I never really thought her I through. She I guess has a possessed softball bat cause she’s a lesbian and the bat is a reference to Rise April. Her mother’s family is Indian and her dad’s is either Indian-American or African American. Like I said before, I haven’t thought her through much.

She handles the supplies for the Homatos and that’s really all I have, I should probly think her through more 😬

This is Raph, originally he was going to be a snapping turtle but I decided he’s actually going to be biologically related to his brothers with the turtle DNA. I haven’t thought too much about him but he does have romantic feelings for Mona Lisa when he meets her but I still need his personality-

Here’s Kassandra Karai Jones, I had SO MUCH fun designing her. She’s a super badass lesbian Foot clan royalty soldier. Also she’s Casey’s twin hehehehe I love that so much. I can’t wait to write her arcs and stuff but I’ll have you know right now that the girl is a DISASTER around attractive women.

This is Donnie!!!! He’s DEFINITELY up there with the Jones twins as one of the most fun characters to design, he’s so awesome I love drawing himmmm eeeeeeeeeeek!!!!

Okay so I made a mistake saying he has dual Bo-staffs, I just liked the way it looked with his design, but that’s incredibly impractical so that’s one of the first things I changed.

He’s the one character that I have his WHOLE personality fleshed out because I loved designing so much and he’s either a silly gay or a silly bisexual. I can’t tell you everything about him right now bc he’s still in the making and I wanna leave some room for content but he’s so much fun to draw and write!!!!

Oh and I don’t think I mentioned but Donnie starts out as the leader cause he’s the oldest but eventually the title just moves liquidly through them until it lands on Leo. I had a little headcannon that I’ll never write down on paper but I keep up here that they be wingmen for each other when someone’s tryna impress a love interest they “hold” the leader title. See: Raph gets to be leader when they meet Mona Lisa.

-based on the hc above: kirby will ALWAYS want to get in there. father father son bonding if you will. kirby likes to be a warm littel guy and if they want that so be it

-if anyone asks why meta knight is spending so much time at castle dedede and not on the halberd as much he says he’s just been training bandee more since rtdl (fucking liar)

-meta knight and dedede swapped masks once for a day (meta lost a bet probably). dedede hates masks actually bc he thinks they’re kinda stuffy etc and cannot comprehend how meta does it all the time. he makes this an excuse to make meta take his mask off

-dedede complains, but- oddly. he complains on meta’s behalf. like. shit like “cmooon you must be soooo tired right now come here” and “guys. everyone shut the fuck up you KNOW meta’s hearing is too well for all of this yelling- no kirby put the mic away”

-meta does get eyestrain easier than anyone else and prefers to be in the dark but entirely respects dedede’s fear of it and even makes it a point for everything to be bright at ALL TIMES

-in their earlier days of meeting, meta knight thought dedede was absolutely ass at fighting. like embarrassingly bad. but now hes sworn partners with the same man. he thinks it ironic but doesnt mind all the less

-cold boyfriend and warm boyfriend end of sentence

-sometimes they just sit on one of castle dedede’s balconies and gossip. like teenage girl style. shit like “has marx even taken a shower? ever?” and “magolor’s outfit is so ugly lfmao”

-injecting content of dedede laying down to be around eye-level with meta knight into my bloodstream

also important thing to note in the show about escargons love for dedede in one episode when he sings about his love he uses the very very formal way of love aishiteru not daisuki which is VERY TELLING

Let's take a moment to address the Phanphan in the room.

So like... Yes, Escargon does have some deep and misplaced affection for Dedede, likely in a romantic sense.

It can depend on who's writing the episode - there are some writers who don't have Dedede hit him and have them get along better - but overall it's an unhealthy at best, and at worst an outright abusive relationship. o_o 

I know it's appealing to have any sort of LGBT representation. And heck, messed up relationships can be fun to explore in fiction! Back in 2002 it was a big deal. Buuuut it's 2022 and we can do better.

Like if I had one real complaint about the show, it's that gay relationships are treated as a punchline at times. (Not that other Kirby media has been better. A bunch of the manga are full of homophobic jokes n_u )

So I think in fandom, we should careful how we treat this sort of relationship. Don't romanticize it, at the very least. And I know people like to do the whole ‘just change it so it’s not abusive’ or even ‘pair Escargon with game Dedede’ but that’s also controversial because others feel it minimizes or trivializes the abuse.

Whatever you do, just be considerate of the people who are uncomfortable with it- add proper content warnings and such so people can filter it.

i am well aware that japanese media touches upon lgbt themes, i am big fan of magical girl anime like sailor moon after all, but none of it is *children's media*.

the most you can do within limitations of media oriented at children and families are implications. because if you do anything more than that, especially in videogames, age rating jumps up much higher.

kirby in japan is a brand akin to sanrio. something that sells a lot of plushies, novels, mangas, games per year. in the unfortunate world where capitalism and money rule everything, obviously company wouldn't risk brand's family-friendly image by delving into something "controversial" and upping the age rating of the games.

yes we all know that kirby has some fucked up content and touched upon some dark topics, but what is acceptable in japan to be for children and what is not are entirely different things compared to elsewhere.

Some Ramblings

[[Content Warnings for Death, Cancer, and pooossible spoilers for Netflix The Sandman]] Last week, I finished watching the Sandman series on netflix with friends. The BF highly enjoyed it and i wanted to get in on it too so i could talk about it with him. And i def recommend it! There are Some Notes™ but still very much worth the watch and support. (It’s very gay, and that by itself gives it a lot of points)

The big reason i’m bringing it up because my favorite episode “The sound of her wings” really did a lot for me.

For those who were keeping up when my mother died of pancreatic cancer August last year, you may remember that she had chosen for herself to be taken off life support. She was completely Lucid and present when making this decision, so we as a family, a family who several times have collectively had casual conversations about how “we wouldnt want to stay on life support” while watching things like Grey’s anatomy together, respected it and understood. 

So the deed was done. She was given a “Merciful release” which, for those who dont know, is when they are taken off life support, the oxygen is turned up, and they are given a morphine drip to minimize suffering. 

Objectively, this was what she wanted, and we all feel it was the best choice and outcome given the cards we were dealt, but during the lows of my grieving, it’s so very hard to not have regrets about it.

We were told that there was no definite time that she would pass, and cuz of Covid, we werent able to stay as long as we wanted.

It took about 8 hours for her to finally pass after we left the hospital. My aunt woke me up from sleeping after midnight on August 7th to let me know.

During the lows of my grieving, it’s very difficult to not think that we just let her suffocate alone in the hospital, and the thought popping up at regular intervals has really fucked me up this past year, imma be real.

Now, back to the Sandman. My family is Christian, but i never really was super devout or anything, but the episode “The sound of Her wings” really brought me a lot of comfort concerning the above situation.

I really enjoyed Neil Gaiman’s  interpretation of death, both in the Netflix series and the DC incarnation. And Kirby Howell-Baptiste played the part incredibly. The character was fun, down to earth, and my favorite character of the series outright. Plus, I can simply say my favorite DC character is Death 😌.

The concept of kind and friendly psychopomps is a good one. It’s nice to know that there was someone who couldve been there to guide her to afterlife. so she wasn’t just alone, that she had a friendly face on this final leg of her journey. Because she was so tired. After what she had been through, no one deserves to be alone, yknow?

Thinking about it still makes me cry, but they aren’t pained tears like they usually are. This character and episode has brought some healing, I feel.

General Opinion over said character: I LOVE JASON i can't even name the moment that it happened but i do simply love jason and wish he could be distanced from batman/jld-type content because he's so good when allowed to stand on its own. character for the ages

GOD okay fair warning, obviously a lot of what I'll be talking about is related to personal interpretation headcanon stuff, like MK has SOME backstory/characterization, DMK has practically nothing, there's a lot of blanks to fill in lol When I started shipping them: 2018ish I think? When I got back into Kirby and started fixating hard on DMK. It sort of started with my partner teasing me with saucy gay rivalry ideas, then we started rping and developing them.

My thoughts: They are so special to me... Personal shit aside, man what a cool pair! The gay rivalry/dark version of myself aesthetic is just so good, love that enemies to lovers shit, love to see how their differences play off each other, the self reflection they can experience through each other, etc. Obviously there isn't a lot of like, extensive content of them, but even when people just make them friends at least I love seeing the different ways they go from hating each other to liking/loving each other. It's just a really cool, fun dynamic! I'm sure people into metagala understand :P

Personal shit back up front: I've mentioned before how I put myself into my DMK and my partner has themself in their MK, so I also just have a very personal attachment to them. We're not kinnies but I joke about us "kindating" LOL. It's really cozy getting to sort of live vicariously through the pair with my long distance partner through RPs and art, and on more than one occasion, I've sort of "vented" through DMK about issues I have that I project onto him, lol...

What makes me happy about them: I just love that they are both so fucked up in their own ways and still love each other so much. Just that concept of feeling so broken and wrong and having this amazing person that you're sure is so much better than you, love and support you and lift you up. I think my happiest thing about them is just thinking of how they take care of each other and heal together.

What makes me sad about them: In the past couple weeks I've been feeling a lot better about it, with a LOT of thanks to some very very kind people on tumblr and the servers I'm in, but like, yeah, it does suck that a not insignificant portion of the fandom thinks the ship is problematic, or at least "weird" enough to want it as far away from them as possible, I mean it's bad enough there's so little content of them lmao!!

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: There's maybe like 6 dametameta fanfics that exist and 5 of them are written by the same person, so I can't really express annoyance with any particular trends without it just coming off like I'm shitting on that author LOL (I miss you Poe I hope you're doing well!!)

I guess I could say the usual portrayal of MK and DMK always hating each other (in fics, art, whatever) is unfortunate, but like, I also totally understand and it's a normal interpretation for them. But it'd be nice to see them being friendly more often!

Things I look for in fanfic: Again, I'd love to just see more of them being friendly in general, it doesn't even have to be shippy! Hell they don't even have to interact much just have DMK being more than a bit villain or just Daroach's boyfriend... please I'm so desperate I'm so hungry

My wishlist: Anything...anything... a crumb... please... holding hands... looking at each other fondly... standing in the same room... I'm dying

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Galacta for DMK and Morpho for MK lol

My happily ever after for them: Unlike Morpho and Galacta I think MK and DMK have kind of had enough... exciting new experiences... I mean if morphogala are a couple in their 20s, dametameta are a couple pushing 50. I just love to think of them having kids and being relaxed and domestic and cute... let the old men rest... grow old together... pls

basically i found a post comparing the "virgin" anime dedede (the japanese one in particular) and the "chad" game dedede, and one of the reasons anime dedede was a virgin was because he was homophobic

ace/clover (which one do u wanna be called or do u not mind both?) clarified by saying that japanime dedede himself was a homophobic stereotype

the only example they wanted to give was in an episode where dedede wanted to break escargoons shell so he could see his body

and apparently thats an extremely offensive gay stereotype

ace of clovers recently told me the stereotype involves assault just as i was finishing typing this whole entire thing

but this was long before japan made it illegal to lgbt discriminate (i actually dont know if that was true or not about japan but i read it in an article)

still tho its disgusting and stupid that a character from a kids game made an anti lgbt joke in front of, well, kids

and the fact i havent seen ONE piece of japanese media that perfectly depicts lgbt people in a positive way pisses me off even tho they literally have a law that says u can no longer be like "haha gay people suck"

Filbo

Okay filbo is super easy, he plays a ton of video games but sucks at literally every single one. He’s a super good sport, though losing so much does discourage him on occasion. He never fails to get the gang together for a night of Mario Kart or Jackbox. He’s overall just the chillest dude to play with and you should definitely let him win once or twice he’ll get so happy it’s gonna be rad.

Favorite genre is definitely in person party games.

Beffica

Oh fuck Beffica, other than being the queen of blackmail, a stoner, and the coolest person alive she doesn’t really have much on her plate after snaxtooth. With her new free time, she’s become a gaming god. She picks the cute character in a fighting game, and demolishes everyone with it, kirby sucks, but not HER kirby. Fear Beffica. She also plays all those mobile games you see in the ads in her spare time. She’s a very poor loser, not that she ever loses, always claims she just wasn’t trying.

Favorite genre is probably party fighters like smash.

Snorpy

Snorpy is undoubtedly a PC dude, he and chandlo built a really neat gaming setup and he’s super proud of it. He shys away from most online games and focuses on story based rpgs and such, he’s a HUGE fan of indie games, and definitely loves anything inspired by Earthbound. He’s the guy who builds a super computer to emulate snes games and he’s living the life. He’s definitely got entire folders full of text documents with random game theories, that are totally correct but everyones to much of a coward to admit it.

Favorite genre is RPGS

Chandlo

Chandlo definitely played Pokémon as a kid and just slowly fell out of video games as he grew older, spending most of his time on the grind bro. But he’s a super supportive partner, and is getting back into video games with Snorpy’s help. He really likes games you can pick up and play for short periods of time or play on the go. He loves Pokémon go, helps get his steps in (and it’s an excuse to get Snorpy outside), he plays a lot of what snorpy plays, and really wants to play 2 player coop games with him. Video games for Chandlo are a means to bond with Snorpy, and he just enjoys playing them with the person he loves most no matter the context. He definitely plays a Paladin like character and keeps snorpy’s mage character alive.

Favorite genre is coop bonding games

Cromdo

Everyone’s favorite gay uncle is definitely not a “gamer” but he owns a Wii from way before snaxtooth, and oh boy does he use it in private. After work he would play just dance, rock band, and guitar hero for hours. After snaxtooth he’s started getting back into it again, he’s really really good at it, and he’s definitely been caught playing it by Beffica and she will never let him live it down. He probably only plays these games with wiggle, as she’s like an icon to him. Other than that he doesn’t really touch video games.

Favorite genre is like active rhythm games.

Gramble

This little man plays nintendogs, Petz, and nothing else. He cried when his Pokémon fainted, he was overwhelmed by the amount of micromanaging in the sims, and he got uncomfortable when he had a hunger bar in Minecraft. Gramble is not suited for gaming and he is content having the most well trained nintendog in the world.

Favorite genre is pet sims.

Wiggle

Wiggle hates video games, she played rock band and got a bad singing score, and never turned back. She does not have time for no critics, Grumpus or Videogame. However she does play candy crush, she clears the board in a rhythm the candy crushing sound effects moving the beat along.

Favorite genre is wine mom puzzle apps.

Triffany

You wouldn’t think she played video games, but she is a god at the ISpy games. ISpy spooky mansion is her shit, and her keen eye makes her great at it. She rushes through the games at a crazy pace, but since it’s Wii shovel ware she has an endless supply so don’t worry. Wambus sits on the couch and watches and always gets surprised on how she’s finding any of this, he doesn’t get it but she loves having him around while she plays

Favorite genre is item finding games.

THE WHOLE REASON why steve became captain america in the first place was because he wasn’t content with staying safe in Brooklyn while other men went to war. in his own words “men are laying down their lives I got no right to do any less than them”

it’s fun to make jokes about how steve is “always angry/picking fights/will fight anything that moves” and sometimes they’re funny but idk a lot of people misunderstand WHY he fights. the U.S. had the privilege of saying “this doesn’t affect us, we’ll sit it out” but steve was determined to fight and tried enlisting five times because in this situation that’s the right thing to do. (the whole reason why jack kirby and joe simon made captain america comics)

the reason why endgame was basically character assassination was because it completely contradicts this about his character!!! it’s a core characteristic!!!! you’re telling me he CHOSE to live through 70+ years of injustices, KNOWING that he COULD help but he’s not allowed to interfere, and he was happy about it? he was perfectly fine with watching tragedies unfold and doing nothing???? if steve were that kind of man he wouldn’t have gotten the serum in the first place. he would’ve lived a normal life in brooklyn the end.

the endgame elevator scene pisses me off too because it’s clearly framed as like character development. because steve learned you dont always have to fight! outsmart nazis by making them think you’re a nazi! yeah thats SUCH a great message. god dont get me started on the way the mcu handled hydra

anyway lots of people STILL think it’s a generational divide, that boomers are all racist, homophobic, bigoted,etc. and millennials are all progressive but the only reason why things are better now was because someone back then fought for those rights. (and even though things are better that doesn’t mean the fight is over) the reason why a higher percentage of older people are bigoted is because the others who werent fucking died. steve is supposed to represent that fight. he just wasn’t there because he missed 70 years in the ice. endgame effectively says “steve WAS there and he chose not to fight. he said this doesnt affect me so I’ll sit it out. he’s not on your side”

steve deserved to retire and he should’ve in the future with the rest of the survivors. it would’ve been a message of healing, moving on, rebuilding. but apparently thats too gay! marvel really said they would rather destroy steve’s entire character than leave even the smallest possibility that he’s Not Straight
