O k a y sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
I am weak for musicals with good music, so weak, and there's a musical called Jesus Christ Superstar which has so fUCKING good music and a fuckton of different version.
The Swedish production from 2014 is on youtube with and without subtitles which I just watched and omygod. OMYGOD. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
I have been going insane over it like with any hyperfixation, but if you add the fact that I am so gay, so very very gay (i am somewhere on the aroacespec, no idea where, but fictional characters and actors for some reason are the exception to the rule) , especially for androgynus men with long hair and soft eyes, then this one kinda makes me d i e.
This version of the musical features a love triangle between Mary Magdalene, Judas and Jesus. Jesus is the most bisexual looking creature to ever be created, Mary wears a leather jacket and Judas wears a mesh shirt. Keep this, and the fact that I am so so gay, in mind while I keep explaining.
It opens with the most banger song in the entire world "Heaven on their minds" but in swedish (i can understand swedish, i cant speak it, but i roughly understand what they're saying. Subtitles my beloved.), sung by blond long haired Judas with a man bun (and a mesh shirt, i swear to the gods, he is wearing a mesh shirt i am going insane).
Then it continues to be awesome, chilling music, banger lines, awesome acting overall stuff that makes me spin around like a drunk helicopter. The songs, omygod the songs, are so awesome and they are so wonderful and i love them and i love them. It also has that hint of christianity, but not in the worshipping way and more in the poetic way, which makes my exmo heart shine and sing and dance and spin back and forth like a swing (unrelated, I love swings, swings are so awesome omygod).
AND ITS GONNA SHOW IN NORWAY AND IM GOING TO SEE IT AND IM DYING BECAUSE ITS SO FUCKINGS AWESOME AND THE SOUNDTRACK AAND IM GOING TO DIE ITS ALL SO WONDEFFUL AND DYING BECAUSE ITS LIVING IN MY HEAD AND IM PAYING MY SANITY AS RENT

Oh my gosh I love Jesus Christ superstar, however I don’t think it’s right to make gay headcanons of bible folk. They were REAL PEOPLE and calling them characters is christianphobic
i truly, truly hope this ask is ironic, but let me respond seriously anyway.
1. in the context of JCS, the apostles are characters. they aren’t realistic portrayals of their biblical counterparts. they are based on real people, yes, but they are distanced from the actual apostles by anachronisms and other artistic liberties taken by both directing and and the text itself. specifically looking at Jesus Christ Superstar Live, Jesus and his apostles didn’t live in a Mad-Max-esque apocalyptic dystopia. and they didn’t wear low cut mesh shirts and have tattoos. Simon the Zealot wasn’t Swedish and didn’t have a blond mohawk and a sick-ass rocker scream. Peter’s denial wasn’t filmed on a cell phone. but somehow them being gay is the line?
2. the gay line has been crossed so many times by so many different productions. gay people have been integral to this show since it’s beginnings! Barry Dennen, Pontius Pilate in the 1973 film, was an openly gay man and his flamboyant portrayal of the character has shaped nearly every future production in some way. if you want JCS to stop being gay, you’ll have to take it up with ALW and Tim Rice yourself, because I have no power here, bud. (Pictured, the 2014 Swedish Arena Tour, AKA The One Where Judas And Jesus Are Definitely Partners)
(YES! THIS IS AN OFFICIAL PRODUCTION!)
3. do you take issue with non-middle eastern, non-Jewish actors being cast to play middle eastern Jewish people in the show? do you take issue with the fact that JCS Mary Magdalene is actually a combination of several women mentioned in the Bible, and not actually representative of the real person? no? then you have NO REASON to take issue with them being gay/bi/pan/etc, other than your own homophobia. and barry dennen did not flounce the purple cloak for you to go around being a homophobic JCS fan (which is an oxymoron).
TL;DR:
they’re gay, keep scrollin.
#big ask mood#anon ask#okay but#this is hands down the actual funniest ask i have ever received#‘christianphobic’ I AM CACKLING#christianphobe anon

since this is still open (i think) let me also give more judas and jesus material im so sorry guys
i mentioned the gospel of judas last time soooo a small explanation. the gospel of judas is a gnostic gospel that talks about judas being jesus's confidant and being told the truth. it's non-canonical and really really disputed. thats it for me on that (im not to the level of trying to dissect ancient texts okay)
on the jesus christ superstar productions...
the swedish production (the later one) is most famous for being the gayest. it's got metal / goth / they have leather pants and mesh shirts like i can't tell you. they make out in this one and judas is definitely pining. you can ask other jcs fans on this (it's not a favorite of mine but i can see why)
also shoutout to the broadway revival and the amstetten one (woo drew sarich!)
the 1973 one, ohhhhh boy. Carl Anderson who plays Judas is a fantastic actor as he alone makes Judas sympathetic, choosing to act concerned when he could have been crass, being heartbroken and pained when he could be furious. Jesus is a lot more of a timid person, introverted and unfortunately finds himself alone in a time of need and stress. There is a deep melancholy in this film between Jesus and Judas (who also have this softness). They hold each other (strangely they are quite touchy and tender with each other, a good start to a musical with a long history). One wouldn’t think that there’d be gay pining in a Christian 70s film but yeah. This is the life.
2000s JCS is set in the 70s-90s on a marble-looking graffitied set. The outfits they are in are distinctly late 90s: Judas is dressed in a black leather jacket, Simon with frosted tips and Peter in a tanktop and jeans. Jesus is more dramatic than 1973 Jesus, almost fainting in one of the songs. Judas, played by Jerome Pradon (a french actor who’s not the right singing role but plays this role great), is also dramatic, always casting side glances. He’s open and vulnerable with Jesus while being caustic to others, causing fights with Mary and Peter; this two-faced-ness is most striking in the multiple scenes where Judas weeps in front of Jesus. He’s so hurt. (I wrote an essay about Jerome Pradon Judas being a pathetic little meow meow and that hasn’t changed.)
At the end of the show, Jesus is lowered down the cross and the only two left are Mary and a ghost version of Judas, equalling the two as those who loved Jesus, broken by his death. If only Judas waited a little bit longer…
shoutout to so many of the great jcs artists!!!!! and shoutout to all the queer kids who love judas!
Iconic Homoerotic Betrayal: Finals
Poll Directory
Context:
Anthy/Utena
Summarized by Anonymous Contributor
THE blueprint for homoerotic betrayals of the canonically gay (as opposed to interpretive, certainly there are older iconic examples for that) variety. listed as #2 in the infamous top ten anime betrayals video, iirc.
it is about akio pushing anthy to utena. it is about utena’s protective stance, misunderstanding. most of all, it is about anthy kissing utena’s shoulder before stabbing her.
the story has been leading us to this the whole time — utena assuming once again the protective princely position; akio, always playing divide and conquer, unable to manipulate utena to betray anthy, now reliant on anthy betraying utena; the game being rigged from the start, true victory impossible (for the duelists, who will always lose the game proper to akio, the rule maker, in one way or another; for akio himself, just as obviously); utena’s love for anthy within the princely stance; anthy’s love for utena and anthy’s fear (of the world beyond; of utena loving her truly; of utena not loving her truly but just projecting onto her still as any prince does, and turning out to be the same (as akio) in the end) and akio (framing himself) as the only one who will love her no matter what because friends turn away from you and only connections by blood are forever, the two of them are the only ones who’s real in this projected world, so on and so forth, and anthy’s bitterness towards utena (“do you know, utena-sama, how i always despised you” from that one “in the next episode” bit) and her princeliness and her being not that impossibly unlike akio (all princes are the same). everything has lead us to this moment. and yet we are shocked.
personally, i’ve never moved on from how she kisses her shoulder.

Judas/Jesus
Summary by @this-is-a-name-dont-worry
We of course have Judas betraying Jesus, with a kiss like a last goodbye, maybe a mockery of their love, maybe a grieving goodbye. In the end it doesn't matter, because Judas would rather hang himself than to keep going. The money was unspent or returned, a change of heart from regret, or maybe a sign it was never about it
But the betrayal is also from Jesus; Jesus, who knew who Judas was, who knew what he'll do. Jesus who still let Judas be an apostle... an act of love, but also, isn't it so cruel to make it look like there was a choice, a chance at another ending for Judas? This is a story where it being a story is part of it, and the writer inserted himself among the characters, and doomed one of them to eternal hatred from everyone. And he dared let the one who will be doomed think he'll ever be saved. Jesus knew what would happen, knew what Judas would do, yet he still let it happen, because the story is more important. After all, at the Last Supper, isn't it Jesus who tell Judas to go and do what he must do?
Judas betrayed Jesus, but Jesus sacrificed them both
#tw christianity#im so sorry i cant anymore#i have a 54 slide judas hyperfixation slideshow its horrendous#this is coming from the athiest who did not know anything about the bible like two years ago#going downhill since#im fine if the lesbians win though <3 at least we have our favorite mlm couple#this is a joke if you see this and know me this is a joke#jcs#jesus christ superstar
