Welcome new friends.... Today we wanted to share a quick overview of Gavin's Foundation, and how it came to be. This photo of Gavin, was the age when we became extremely worried and desperate for answers. Passing all eye tests, we still knew something was very wrong. A month later we were told he was completely blind, and 4 months following that we were told it was LCA. A rare genetic condition that causes blindness at birth/childhood. Troy and I passed on the defective gene to him, which is a 25% chance for all our children. We began fundraising right away for the Foundation Fighting Blindness (where Gavin's Groupies started), and we went to our first LCA conference, and had already started Gavin's Foundation. We were inspired with the major advancements science was making, specifically with gene therapy, and we were destined from that point forward to do everything in our power to do all we can, to make Gavin's life even brighter. This brings us to today, with Gavin's Foundation. A fully volunteer ran, no paid staff, non profit organization, raising funds for research of the NMNAT1 gene mutation. We have made great strides, and continue to have a long road with fundraising, but we have already made our mark with LCA. We are putting up the fight against blindness, and doing all we can to bring Gavin, and other individuals out of the darkness they live in. We hope our story can help others, and even in the depths of sadness we were in with our new life with our baby boy - good, positive and perseverance still exists. We are inspired by all of you everyday, and your unwavering love and kindness towards us, Gavin, our family, and our passion to do our best for our child. We hope our new friends have a little better understanding of how this all began. We are an open book, and hope you ask any questions, about our story, LCA, etc. Thank you for reading and sharing! I always say Gavin has an advantage, and if he loves you, it has nothing to do with how thin, pretty, or perfectly built you are. I love this quality about him! Fun with Braille blocks. I love these because they have an isolated square with just the letter in Braille. Each block also has a raised effect for each letter, so he can also see/feel how the letter is written. Along with learning Braille, he will also learn to identify the written alphabet (with time).
