Oxidation of ammonia offers the appealing prospect of obtaining electrical power from the chemical energy in N-H bonds. Molecular catalysts for this six-electron, six-proton process must balance the energetics of cleavage of N-H bonds, together with formation of the N≡N bond of dinitrogen and release of the N2.
