Title: Cuteness Member - Munchy Beaver
We'll meet other members from the (child-friendly) show "PB&J Otter" from the likes of Flick, and otter siblings; Peanut and Jelly Otter, soon. But for now, here's Munchy Beaver 🪵🦫 in his AU from enrolling the "Cuteness Defender Academy", with his first "Cuteness Mecha Armor" was the "Buster"! 🤖😁
Buster Munchy Based on: GAT-X103 Buster Gundam [CLICK ME!]
Armament(s):
350mm Gun Launcher • Mounted on the backpack and carried in Buster's right hand when in use. It is a projectile weapon akin to a railgun or linear gun, which uses electromagnetic forces rather than gunpowder to launch its projectiles. In addition to solid shells, the gun-launcher can also fire specialized munitions such as armor-piercing and high explosive rounds.
94mm High-energy Rifle • Mounted on the backpack and carried in Buster's left hand when in use. It is a beam weapon similar to the beam rifle, and is the highest caliber energy rifle among those used by other units in the G Project. Its destructive power is above a battleship's beam cannon despite its smaller size.
220mm 6-barrel Missile Pod • The Buster is equipped with two 220mm 6-barrel Missile Pods, one in each shoulder, allowing the suit to fire a rain of missiles to destroy enemy units or to stop them from moving closer.
Anti-Armor Shotgun • When the High-energy Rifle and Gun Launcher combine, with the Gun Launcher on the front, it forms a very powerful shell-firing Anti-Armor Shotgun. It fires a single stream containing multiple shells that later splits apart, resulting in a scatter shot that damages a wide area. It appears that about four or five shells fired from the Anti-Armor Shotgun is enough to destroy some battleships.
Hyper Impulse Long-Range Sniper Rifle • When the High-energy Rifle and Gun Launcher combine, with the High-energy Rifle on the front, it can form a Long-Range Sniper Rifle. This beam cannon type weapon has a very high energy output, firing a larger beam that is capable of penetrating several targets, including battleships, making it the strongest weapon in the armored Buster's arsenal. As the name implies, it also features sniping capabilities due to the longer range of the beam. Although the combined forms has higher power, the rate of fire is decreased.
Special Equipment/Feature(s):
Phase Shift armor • The Buster is equipped with phase shift armor. When activated the Buster's color is changed from a light grey to a true color form. Phase Shift armor, when activated, renders the Blitz immune to physical attacks such as bullets, solid handheld blades, or against missiles. However Phase Shift armor continually drains the battery of energy, shortening the "CMA" suit's combat endurance, and uses up additional energy when it is hit.

Heart Healthy Supplements
The global market for heart healthy supplements is estimated to surpass USD 17.1 billion in 2019, with a projected growth rate of 7.1% by 2028, resulting in a revenue opportunity nearly twice as high. This growth is largely fueled by increasing concerns about heart health and the growing prevalence of cardiovascular diseases, which led to global spending on cardiovascular disease diagnosis and treatment reaching USD 923 billion in 2018, expected to surpass USD 1 trillion by 2028. Such trends are expected to sustain the demand for heart healthy supplements.
In this market, suppliers hold significant bargaining power over manufacturers due to a systematized value chain and third-party vendors facilitating market access. Moreover, the presence of numerous enterprises in the market tilts the balance towards suppliers, making it a price-intensive industry.
At the manufacturer level, companies are focusing on product expansion and partnerships to fortify their market presence. For instance, Denomega Nutritional Oils and GAT Food Essentials formed a joint partnership in 2017 to capitalize on the European functional foods and beverage market. Similarly, DowDuPont's acquisition of FMC Corporation's Health & Nutrition arm in the same year, excluding the omega-3 business, aimed to strengthen its foothold in North America and Europe. Such strategic moves are expected to continue, driving industry growth.
Organic growth strategies are also gaining traction, with DSM reporting a 7% organic growth in 2017. Additionally, BASF's membership in the personalized health consortium founded by TNO and Wageningen University in 2018 underscores a commitment to research and innovation in nutritional ingredients and personalized healthcare. Advanced product innovation and effective distribution strategies are poised to drive organic sales growth.
Despite the promising outlook, recent regulatory rulings, such as the European Medicines Agency's decision on omega-3 fatty acids, may dampen overall sales to some extent. The ruling questioned the effectiveness of omega-3 fatty acids in preventing heart-related complications in heart attack survivors, potentially impacting the market's growth trajectory.
Global Heart Healthy Ingredients Market Value: By Ingredient Type
Omega-3 holds the largest share, driven by its nutritional and medicinal benefits, with high-potency oil concentrates expected to further boost demand.
Global Heart Healthy Ingredients Market Value: By Application
Heart health supplements are estimated to dominate the market, exceeding USD 8,177 million in 2019, driven by increased consumer awareness and daily consumption for health benefits, particularly in metropolitan areas.
Global Heart Healthy Ingredients Market Size and Forecast: Regional Analysis
North America leads the market, valued at over USD 5.9 billion in 2019, with sustained dominance expected. However, Asia Pacific is anticipated to capture a significant market share by 2028, presenting substantial opportunities for industry players.
Global Heart Healthy Ingredients Market Size and Forecast: Competition Landscape
Key players include BASF SE, Tate & Lyle plc, Denomega Nutritional Oils AS, Bioriginal Food & Science Corporation, Croda International Plc., Koninklijke DSM N.V., FMC Corporation, BTSA Biotecnologias Aplicadas SL, Devansoy Inc., I. du Pont de Nemours and Company, Berg Lipidtech AS (BLT), Eden Foods, Inc., Deyang Huatai Biopharm Resource Co., Ltd., and Frutarom Industries Ltd.

Image = Information
Orit Gat
1 A beginning
In Paris, an artist painting in a studio that used to be part of a monastery. She goes out and gets the largest drawing papers she can find. Surrounded by paint pots and brushes, it’s an image that belongs in a tradition of artists painting away in Parisian garrets, only this is not that story. What Clare Strand was painting in her Paris studio during a three-month residency at the Centre Photographique d'Ile-de-France in 2017 was a translation of pre-existing photographs that were ‘read’ to her over the phone by her husband in the UK. From across the English Channel, he would give her directions that would encode an image of his choosing, and she would paint it.
2 Transmission
Strand and her husband were following an existing model. The method they were using to transmit information was described in George H. Eckhardt’s ‘Electronic Television’, from 1936, in which he outlined how a photograph can be transmitted via code over telegraph. In this system, the original image is divided into a grid, with every square being given a value from 1 to 10. 1 is white, 2 has a tinge of grey, 3 is greyer, 4 darker and so on until 10, which is black. The initial source images from which Strand’s husband chose the images he would transmit to her were 10-by-8 inches, which they divided into a grid of forty-nine squares across and sixty down, each about 5 square millimetres. If it’s boring to read, imagine the couple’s phone conversations: he would call and say 24-2; 25-4; 26-5; and so on. Through conversation, with Strand following her husband’s direction, the language would form a representation of the original image. Like a human fax machine.
3 The result
Is a series of ten black-and-white paintings in acrylic on paper. The history of art brings forth associations and relations, from the development of the grid as a foundation for perspective in the Renaissance, to the nineteenth-century illusionism achieved through Pointillism. There are Gerhard Richter’s black-and-white paintings, László Moholy-Nagy’s telephone paintings, Agnes Martin’s feather-light grids. But the connection to the history of art crumbles in front of the actual framed paintings. They’re human, Strand says, as she reasserts that she is not a painter. They’re messy, imperfect. There are hairs that stuck to the paper, dust congealed into the paint. However, in installation shots of the whole series, they look like another kind of work. Photographed, the paintings seem faultless: the black, white and grey hues reminiscent of aestheticized black-and-white photography; the paintings look clean, their edges not frayed, the small mistakes blend into the frame. It’s like they have two lives, as object and as image. When I ask Strand which one matters more, she answers, ‘I don’t know. What I find ironic is that, as much I try to push “photography” into different mediums, I can never escape the camera and how it operates as a tool of representation. With each press or catalogue reproduction, the paintings are represented as photographs, which is somewhat at odds with the concept of the work – photography transposing into painting only then to be represented by photography!’
4 Utility
To talk about the history of art and about installation shots is to ignore how the objecthood of the paintings depends on their creation. This series, titled The Discrete Channel with Noise, is at once the result of and the documentation of communication and its possible failures. Looking at the paintings, I want to say they look pixelated, but that would make them more photo than painting, more final product than process.
5 The first man who saw the first photograph
The relationship between painting and photography always makes me think of Roland Barthes writing in his essay on photography, Camera Lucida, that ‘The first man who saw the first photograph (if we except Niépce, who made it) must have thought it was a painting: same framing, same perspective. Photography has been, and is still, tormented by the ghost of Painting.’ Later in the book, he writes about photography’s relationship to reality, or to the document: ‘No writing can give me this certainty. It is the misfortune (but also perhaps the voluptuous pleasure) of language not to be able to authenticate itself.’ The photo as confirmation of fact. That fact, that reality, is communicated over phone lines in The Discrete Channel with Noise. When we look at a photograph, what we’re looking for, according to Barthes, is knowledge that a thing, an event, happened. He writes about Polish soldiers in a 1915 photo by André Kertész: ‘that they were there; what I see is not a memory, an imagination, a reconstitution, a piece of Maya, such as art lavishes upon us, but reality in a past state: at once the past and the real.’ What we see, in The Discrete Channel with Noise, is a story about reality rather than proof thereof.
6 Whizzing through the air
When I meet Strand, she hands me an assortment of notes. She’s hesitant about it for a minute, as if giving me homework rather than help. Or as if she expects communication can fail, and thinks a list of references may offer a way out of an impasse. The history of Morse code; pigeon post between Paris and England c. 1870–71; Eckhardt; Cybernetics founder Norbert Weiner and American mathematician Claude Shannon’s information theory, which gave The Discrete Channel with Noise its title: Strand’s research does not explain as much as expand the work. And then in the notes is a quote from the 1973 movie Charlie and the Chocolate Factory based on Roald Dahl’s writing, recreating Eckhardt’s transmission of images over radio. Here the character Mike Teavee, the winner of the fourth golden ticket, who loves this technology, explains: “You photograph something then the photograph is split up in to millions of tiny pieces and they go whizzing through the air, then down to your TV set when they are all put together in the right order”
Mike Teavee, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Roald Dahl (1971).
That it is possible to share an image, and the labyrinthine process of it whizzing through the air is in line with Dahl’s 1971 book, in which the candy factory includes an impenetrable room-sized machine that, when operated, makes a lot of noise, takes a lot of time, and then produces a single bit of chewing gum. Unimpressive until someone chews it and realizes it is as nourishing as a three-course dinner: tomato soup, roast beef with baked potatoes, blueberry pie and ice cream for dessert.
Proof: the overcomplicated can sometimes be amazing.
A lesson: also worth exploring.
7 Thirty-six images on a journey
The ten images in The Discrete Channel with Noise were chosen from a collection of thirty-six images Strand has compiled for a previous work, The Entropy Pendulum (2015), in which each of these photographs, which were taken from a tabloid newspaper’s archive, was eroded by the weight of a pendulum over the course of one day in an exhibition, then framed. Strand rephotographed the physical photos from the archive, creating a digital output that becomes a dataset ready for reuse. The subject of those images related to what Strand refers to as the subject of her work in general – magic, illusion, the paranormal, communication, transmission, the way people thought communication technologies were magical when they were first introduced, the way Alexander Graham Bell called the telephone a way to ‘talk with electricity’. How to read the transformation of these images through the process in The Discrete Channel with Noise These images are on a journey of losing and gaining information. The project is a metaphor, if not a realization, for what images do anyway: in flux, they move and shift in meaning.
8 Shifting in meaning
Why pay attention to shifts? Because shifts in context can mean that information is lost, or misused. An art historian friend of mine regularly points out that Alexander Nix, the founder and CEO of Cambridge Analytica, studied art history in university. Art matters, images matter, she wants to say. All channels of misinformation need to be decoded. Is there a present and a real, like Barthes thought there was in an only slightly less technological time than the one we occupy, today? Or is the subject of study now how realities are fractured across channels of communication?
9 An entire history of communication
The diagram used to explain Eckhardt’s ‘Electronic Television’ has a man sitting at a table in front of a large black-and-white image divided into a grid of a woman with short, curly hair who looks a bit like an early Hollywood film star. His sleeves are rolled up, his back a bit hunched, he is clearly concentrating. He holds a long pointer stick and taps information onto a device resting on the desk he is sitting at. The cable running from that device spirals into a growing network of telephone poles that reach a window, and from that window to a box on the wall, and straight from the box to a set of headphones that another man wearing a blazer (or is it a lab coat?) standing in front of a large grid, only partially completed with the recognisable top of the short-haired woman’s head. He holds a paint brush at the same spot the other man’s pointer is. Behind him on a table are 10 boxes of paint numbered from 1 (white) to 10 (black) and some paint brushes. The caption reads, ‘Fig. 26. A Simple Method for Sending Pictures by Wire or Radio.’
Visually, it matters that the example is always a woman and the transmitters and receivers are always men. The message is that even in new technologies, even in a new world, some old signals remain. That is what Eckhardt’s diagram exemplifies. An entire history of communication reinforces the idea of who gets to speak across these lines. It is therefore fitting that The Discrete Channel of Noise is structured and executed by a female artist.
10 A piece of Maya
When Barthes writes that ‘no writing can give me this certainty’, he is asserting photography’s relationship to what he calls ‘the real’. But as a writer, he must have known that it is the rest of the above-cited list – ‘a memory, an imagination, a reconstitution, a piece of Maya’ – that is one of the potentials of art: to reconstitute is a way of reimagining the world. After Cambridge Analytica, or in line with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, I want to argue that the redefinition or the exploration of that real is the contemporary condition. We come to things with suspicion, some of which is about recognising the failures of the systems around us. But we also come to them with a sense of possibility, a remnant of the Maya or the three-course meal chewing gum: the idea that the world is a story, and it can be shared.

Zagat, Explained
What’s old is new again: Burgundy Zagat guidebooks are back in print. The New York Times reports that a 2020 edition of the Zagat guide to New York City restaurants will appear in stores this fall. The last Zagat guide to New York City was the 2017 edition published in 2016.
In March of 2018, after shopping around the brand for months, Google successfully unloaded Zagat to the Infatuation for an undisclosed sum. “When you think about its history and what Zagat means to so many people, it’s a huge opportunity,” Infatuation co-founder Chris Stang told the New York Times of the purchase a the time. Though Stang said Zagat would remain its own brand, it was unclear how exactly the Infatuation, perhaps best known for its ubiquitous Instagram hashtag #eeeeeats and sometimes racist restaurant reviews, would “apply its technological expertise,” to grow Zagat, as the NYT described it. He says now that putting the guide back into print was always a part of the plan.
Since the 1980s, Zagat has published an annual survey of restaurant reviews. And although it was once considered one of the most reliable sources of restaurant recommendations, today, with so many restaurant reviews, ratings, and guides to choose from, Zagat doesn’t carry quite the same weight.
Zagat predated the internet age, and those that came up in it might not know much about the brand, including how it’s pronounced (it’s Zuh-GAT, rhymes with “cat”). For those people, here’s a primer.
The TL;DR
Historically, Zagat is a restaurant guidebook that assigns numbered ratings to dining establishments across four different categories: food, decor, service, and cost. Unlike other published dining guides, like Michelin, Zagat’s restaurant ratings and reviews are crowdsourced: They’re based on a survey of thousands of people. A restaurant’s final numbered rating is an aggregate of survey data, and Zagat pulls from the survey’s comment section to fill out its distinct review blurbs, filled with those “iconic” “partial” quotes.
The Zagat origin story
Zagat was founded by two married lawyers who dined out as a hobby. As the story goes, in 1979, Nina and Tim Zagat were hosting a dinner party at their New York City home when their friends — also serious diners — started complaining about professional newspaper restaurant critics. Tim Zagat was struck with a lighting bolt of an idea: instead of relying on just a few opinions for restaurant recommendations, he would poll his friends.
He issued a typewritten survey to 10 of the couple’s friends. They then passed it along to their friends, chain mail style. For the first survey of New York City restaurants, called the 1980 NYC Restaurant Survey, 200 amateur critics rated 100 restaurants on food, decor, service, cleanliness, and cost. (Cleanliness was eventually dropped as a category.) They also provided the comments that Tim and Nina Zagat used to form collectively written, paragraph-long restaurant reviews.
At the time, the survey was groundbreaking. It served as the first-ever space for critical eaters to share their opinions, and on its website, Zagat declares itself the “original provider of user-generated content.”
The evolution of Zagat
In 1983, the Zagats produced 10,000 copies of their self-published survey and distributed them to bookstores, according to an Edible Manhattan profile. For years, the couple worked as lawyers who peddled dining guides on the side, but by 1990, both transitioned to focus on the Zagat guide full time. Ten years in, the survey had expanded to cover multiple cities, including Boston and Chicago, and paperback Zagat surveys were widely available at bookstores as well as in checkout lines and coffee shops.
The survey results mattered, too. A Zagat guidebook starred in a 1995 Saturday Night Live sketch, in which a married couple, played by Chris Farley (dressed as a woman) and Adam Sandler, bicker about which Zagat-recommended restaurants to visit for their 35th wedding anniversary. While the sketch didn’t exactly make the brand seem cool, it solidified its place in popular culture. When Brooklyn restaurant the Grocery got a near-perfect Zagat score of 28 in 2003, the news appeared on the front page of the New York Times.
Restaurants, naturally, also cared about their Zagat ratings. In 2004, famed New York restaurant and drag bar Lucky Cheng’s sued Zagat for libel, trade libel, and negligence and claimed that the 2004 survey’s Lucky Cheng’s listing resulted in a 35 percent drop in business. Along with a score of 9 for food, the people at Zagat published this offending review:
God knows “you don’t go for the food” at this East Village Asian-Eclectic rather you go to “gawk” at the “hilarious” “cross-dressing” staff who “tell dirty jokes,” perform “impromptu floor shows” and offer “lap dances for dessert”; obviously, it “can be exhausting,” and weary well-wishers suggest they “freshen up the menu and their makeup.”
The judge dismissed the case because a restaurant review — even one assembled from multiple anonymous opinions — does not constitute libel.
Zagat in the internet age
When Zagat hit the internet, it put its survey results — the very things that powered it through decades of relevance — behind a paywall. Online, not as many people cared that Zagat was the original user-generated food review outlet, when new user-generated food review outlets, like Yelp, provided content for free. According to a 2010 article from the New York Times, Zagat’s online traffic was dismal. In September of that year, Zagat had 570,000 unique visitors, compared to Yelp’s 9.4 million. Because of the paywall, Zagat’s content didn’t show up in Google search results, likely affecting the traffic.
This obviously changed when Google purchased Zagat in 2011.
Tim and Nina Zagat started looking to sell the company as early as 2008, the year they announced that they were ready to sell their stake for $200 million. After three years on the market, Google acquired Zagat for $151 million to, presumably, groom it as a competitor to Yelp, a longtime tech-world rival. As then Google VP Marissa Mayer put it on Twitter when the sale went through: “Delightful deal done; Zagat and Google now one; foodies have more fun!”
The following years weren’t as delightful as anticipated, at least for Zagat. After Google incorporated Zagat’s data into its search and map programs, it didn’t pay much attention to promoting the Zagat name or branding. Zagat’s city coverage dwindled: a 2013 site redesign stripped the number of cities Zagat covered online from 30 to nine. Today, Zagat lists 38 cities as “Zagat cities,” although it’s unclear how frequently the content is updated.
While under Google ownership, Zagat also changed its ratings system. For more than 35 years, the Zagat guides asked their survey participants to rate restaurants on a scale between one and three across four categories. The scores were averaged and multiplied by 10 to produce the published rating of up to 30. But in 2016, Zagat switched to a system that scores restaurants on a scale of one to five stars. Zagat converted all of its ratings to the new star system, which was easy enough to comprehend. A restaurant previously rated 29 points for food and 28 points for decor would now have 4.9 stars for food and 4.8 stars for decor, respectively.
Unsurprisingly, Zagat’s published guidebooks have suffered in the internet age. In 2003, Zagat published surveys in 70 different cities.
Zagat in print again
The Infatuation is only reviving the New York City Zagat guidebook, and per Zagat tradition, they’re doing it with a survey. Anyone is invited to fill out the NYC Zagat Restaurant Survey on Zagat.com. It’s open through May 5. And because this is the guidebook for 2020, there will also be a website and an app.
Update: April 2, 2019, 12:30 p.m.: This story was originally published on March 5, 2018. It has been updated throughout to reflect the latest information.

Cash, Kings and Kohli: The IPL's $2.5 billion juggernaut
It is an accolade pinned onto the end of his playing days, won at a time when such competitions were met in some quarters with disdain, cast off as exhibitions and little more than a final payday.
Yet, leading the Rajasthan Royals to an IPL title in 2008 is, perhaps, among Warne’s most underrated achievements. And as the event’s 12th edition prepares for takeoff, there have been few more significant figures in the tournament’s history.
Inextricably linked to Test cricket — the game’s traditional pinnacle — by virtue both of his rule over the format and the era in which he dominated the sport before the Twenty20 juggernaut had reached full flight, it is easy to forget Warne’s importance to the IPL in its early days.
He played a key role in easing initial skepticism over a competition that has since revolutionized cricket.
His Rajasthan Royals team had been widely discounted as a threat. As Warne recalls, speaking to CNN: “The only consistent thing in 2008 was that everyone wrote us off and said the Royals would come last.”
He was both captain and coach. Of the eight brand new franchises, the Royals were the least glamorous, without a star Indian name, and had cost the least ($67 million) when the outfits were initially to put up for auction.
Yet, he led his Jaipur-based side to glory in the inaugural competition. In a league founded on gluttonous wealth, it was — in relative terms — a victory for the little guy. The story ignited a flame, a fire that burns brighter than ever 11 years later.
An ‘underdog story’
“I think [we] helped give the IPL credibility because the underdog came good,” Warne says.
“To then go and win it in the style we did, that put the IPL on the map. Any underdog story like that — you look at Leicester City, what they did. It’s a pretty amazing story.
“I was very lucky to play in an era of Australian cricket where we were super-successful. We beat every team home and away, won World Cups, Ashes series, so we had some huge results.
“To be part of all of that with the Aussies and do those things was great but the IPL, it was completely different,” he explains.

For a sport so rigidly traditional, the sheer idea of a franchise-based tournament, with players allocated to newly-created teams through an auction, would take some getting used to.
These days, however, the format is all the rage and similar entities now exist across the cricketing globe.
“You’ve got to remember that no one knew what to expect in that first [IPL] year,” Warne reflects. “‘What do you mean there’s going to be owners putting up a paddle to buy players? What do you mean there’s six different cultures all in different teams [playing] with young Indian players?’
“There’s me, this has-been cricketer who had retired 18 months beforehand. [The other teams] all had their coaches with them and I’m the captain-coach. We lose the first game and go on to win it.”
They were soundly beaten by the Delhi Daredevils, before winning their next five games. Warne, the only non-Indian to captain a team in 2008, references Brendon McCullum’s unbeaten century in the league’s first ever fixture as another defining factor, an indicator of the levels that could be reached.
‘Amazing growth’
Warne is speaking at the launch of the Rajasthan Royals Academy at Reed’s School in Surrey. The first of its kind in the UK, it is an initiative that reinforces the exponential commercial growth of a six-week tournament.
“It’s amazing how quickly [the IPL] has grown,” reflects Warne. “After only 10 years, I think when you consider all the other big franchise sports, this will be the fastest growing huge franchise.”
In 2017, Star India purchased the global broadcast rights to the tournament from 2018 to 2022 for $2.55 billion. For a competition that lasts six weeks from beginning to end, it is a figure that highlights the league’s enormous reach. It marked a five-fold upsurge on the initial agreement.

Indeed, the league’s first broadcast deal — a 10-year arrangement with India’s Sony Television network and the Singapore-based World Sports Group (WSG) — was worth $1.026 billion across the decade. The contract included a $908 million fee for the telecast rights, as well as a further $108 million for the tournament’s promotion.
“Some of the pay packets for the players are huge,” Warne adds. The Australian legend cost Rajasthan $450,000 when he was picked up at the tournament’s first auction.
At the 2014 auction, Indian all-rounder Yuvraj Singh’s signature fetched $2.3 million. In 2015, the same player was bought by the Delhi Daredevils for $2.7 million.
“The global reach and eyeballs that are watching these games is probably more than any other sport worldwide,” Warne says of the ever-growing numbers attached to the competition. “The global interest in the IPL and on their franchises is huge.”
Virat Kohli — India’s superstar
Perhaps, there is no greater validation of the IPL’s success since than Virat Kohli. Arguably the world’s leading batsman across all of the sport’s three formats, Warne sees a fundamental link between the India skipper’s improvement and his IPL experience.
“Don’t underestimate the IPL and the opportunities and what it has done for Indian cricket,” he says.
“I remember Virat Kohli was very young when I first played in 2008. He couldn’t really play the short ball.
“But being exposed to all the fast bowlers that were around at his franchise in Bangalore, suddenly [he was] practicing against it all the time, playing against it all the time, when at that stage they didn’t experience that in India.
“There are 10 guys in the IPL now that can bowl at 150 kilometers per hour, so they’re facing it all the time and they have got better.”
Such is Kohli’s talent — his personal statistics, especially in one-day cricket, are historically unparalleled — he has remained a cheerleader for Test cricket even as the IPL has risen as an aspiration for any young Indian.
“I think we’re very lucky in this era,” Warne says. “We’ve got Virat Kohli who’s currently the biggest superstar in cricket saying: ‘Test cricket is the most important form of the game.’
“So that flows onto the Ranji Trophy (India’s first-class competition), and now suddenly that’s more important, so all these players want to perform in the Ranji Trophy to get picked.
“That creates more interest in Test cricket, more people watching, more people attending. That has a follow-on effect to the world game. Young kids these days have so many more opportunities, a young boy or girl can go play T20 if they want to, but they still always have Test cricket if they want to.
“The most important thing is to play for your country. If you do that well and are lucky enough to have that opportunity, the rest of it will look after itself.”
Unrivaled legacy
At his very best, Warne’s ability to spin the ball at speed made him unplayable.
His talent truly arrived on the global scene in 1993; the image of his delivery to Mike Gatting, christened the ‘ball of the century’, has more than stood the test of time.
He was named the Wisden Leading Cricketer in the World on three separate occasions, and one of Wisden’s five cricketers of the 20th century. As a legacy, Warne’s is unrivaled — the sport’s greatest ever leg-spinner.
A man of 708 Test wickets, Warne is well aware of the challenges facing five-day cricket amid reports of dwindling interest levels. He, though, is remaining upbeat; encouraged by his position on the MCC’s World Cricket Committee.
READ: How to solve cricket’s ball tampering problem?
READ: What is ball tampering?
“We just had the numbers presented to us,” he says. “The one that stood out was that this is the highest interest rate of Test match cricket. So, the attendances might be down a little, but the interest and people watching and the eyeballs is much more than it’s ever been.
“Now, is that because there’s more access? 33% of the worldwide public watch everything on a tablet or iPad, so kids will be watching anything they want to watch on that. There’s television, social media, there’s so many different outlets.”
Indeed, last year’s IPL final between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Chennai Super Kings drew a peak of 10.3 million simultaneous viewers on online platform Hotstar: a record for the live streaming of any event worldwide.
A land of opportunity
The sheer scope of the IPL in a cricket-obsessed nation has allowed Warne to look back at his Rajasthan success with a rare satisfaction. More than simply winning in 2008, the Australian legend’s greatest influence was in his methods.
The victory would be the making of Ravi Jadeja, then an unheralded 19-year-old. A decade on, he is one of the world’s best spinners, an integral part of India’s national side. The form of Yusuf Pathan, who had only recently arrived on the scene, would propel him into the top tier of T20 sluggers. He would join the Kolkata Knight Riders for $2.1 million in 2011 IPL auction.
“If you think of the IPL, there is a lot of downtime,” Warne explains. “There is a lot of time in hotels, a lot of time traveling, in airports waiting in lounges, on buses.”
A notion he repeats is that of “opportunity:” the chance for youngsters to soak up as much knowledge as possible from their star colleagues and to change their lives.
As Warne says: “To sit around a dressing room for Yusuf Pathan, Jadeja and a few other young Indian players; to be mixing with players like Shane Watson, Graeme Smith — who was captain of South Africa, myself as well as captain and coach; to interact and watch the way we train; to pick their brains — ‘How do you face this type of bowling? What you would do in a certain situation?’
“That was something that I did for the first four years as captain and coach. I just said: ‘Okay guys, ask questions.'”
The Royals were the heart-warming tale that the IPL needed. Cynicism was replaced by a recognition of the league’s possibilities.
“If you think of just India, there are 1.3 billion people and they all love cricket, let alone the rest of the population of the world,” Warne explains.
Visit CNN.com/Sport for more news, features and videos
“The opportunities are there. A lot of players who might be on the fringe and might not have had the opportunity to play against international players on a regular basis, suddenly have because people are looking for a great buy — paying ‘unders’ for a decent player.
“For the opportunity for the younger player to grow now and be part of a franchise — even if they don’t play — just to watch and experience it and get them hungry for it, is a huge thing.
“I think the IPL is probably the biggest learning curve for any player — whether you’re an experienced player or a young player. I think the young player obviously benefits the most.”
The competition has become a breeding ground for the sport’s next generation. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, as well as Nepal’s Sandeep Lamichhane, are proof that neither age nor nationality act as barriers.
Meanwhile, the development of Rishabh Pant — voted the competition’s emerging player of the year in 2018 — into a major part of India’s squad is a reminder of the IPL’s impact on its own shores.
As Warne sums up: “The IPL has really helped the Indian team, but it has also helped other countries as well.”

2017 Saints Row Boss Appreciation Week Exchange for @Sablehaven’s Boss Isis
Summary: Sometimes even the boss needs a break. Johnny prepares a surprise and a distraction for Isis.
a/n: Written for @sablehaven and her boss, Isis, for Saints Row Boss Appreciation Week 2017. Apologies for this coming a little late. Things have been a little wonky lately.
Lovely Surprises
-1-
Suspicious.
None of the crew would tell her where Johnny was. What was worse, they kept calling Isis with little emergencies. Maybe it was paranoia, but she was starting to think they were all just trying to keep her busy. Keep her occupied.
She’d actually started counting the calls after the first few. Thirteen, she thought. A grumble rolled around in her throat as she dug the buzzing monstrosity of a phone out of her pocket. “What?” she barked as she accepted the call. “I’ve kneecapped four guys, collected on two more, gotten into some scuffles with the cops, and even spent an hour listening to Griffin drone on about his favorite hair gel for an hour. What else could you possibly want from me right now?”
The dark chuckle on the other end of the line pulled Isis out of her funk like a tractor beam. “Tough day? Sounds quieter than it used to be.”
“Well, yeah,” she replied, toeing the seam in the concrete as a soft smile spread across her lips.
Johnny hummed, there was nothing thoughtful about it. She knew Johnny Gat too well to make that assumption. “How about this? You go home. Take a shower and put on something comfortable and I’ll take you out for a nice ‘job well done’ treat.”
“How ‘bout I shower up and you be my treat?” she replied, a purr of her own trying to combat the effectiveness of his.
“Tempting as that is. This time I’m calling the shots, Boss.”
“The hell you say.” Isis liked being in charge, dominating in almost all things. She wasn’t one to give up control easily.
Johnny chuckled again. Damn that sound.
“Not even a little curious?” There was a tease in his voice, almost like those times he edged her. He’d watch her unravel, taunting her with an orgasm until she begged asked for it. That’s when he’d ask if she was sure she couldn’t take anymore.
She grinned. That cocky bastard was always hell bent on showing her she could hold out longer. He had that same tone in his voice.
“So, what if I am?”
“Then I’ll see you in an hour.”
“Johnny.” There was no reply. “Johnny! Johnny?” No dice. “Argh!” She started to throw the phone against the brick wall, but managed to stop herself. She’d only had this one two days since the last mishap, but her hand tightened around it for a moment before she stuffed it back into her pocket.
The way she saw it there were too choices—play along or not. Though the large and in charge part of her said not, her curiosity
-2-
Johnny honked the horn and stepped out of the car. He leaned on the front quarter panel of his Venom and waited, expecting her to be like any other woman he’d dated. That she’d need an additional twenty minutes. After five, he called. He heard the ringing phone as she stepped out of the front door of her building.
“Did you set an alarm?” he chuckled, pulling open the passenger door for her.
Isis smiled at him. There was a warmth in it that surpassed her usual smirk, something warm, appreciative. “No,” she quipped at him, stopping at the door, her hand resting atop his. She leaned up and kissed him. “Now, what’s the surprise?”
“Get in the car, Isis.”
Her eyes narrowed at him slightly, giving her head a shake to flip her purple hair out of her eyes. Then with a huff, she complied. Johnny laughed quietly as he closed the door.
“Not even a clue?” she asked when he slid behind the wheel.
Johnny was far better at keeping a secret than she was at getting the information out of him. After all, she wouldn’t result to her usual techniques for prying information out of people on him. She'd just be annoyed with him until they got where they were going.
It was rather adorable. The way her bottom lip jutted out, in a pout attempt not to do just that. Johnny laid his hand on her thigh, giving it a little squeeze.
“Oh, no you don’t secret keeper.” Isis slipped her hand into his and laid it back on the gear shift.
“I thought you said you liked surprises.”
He could see it in her face. She wanted to say something, but she didn’t because he was right. She liked surprises, well, some of them at least, and he was fairly certain this would qualify for the former.
“So then, will you tell me why?”
“I need a reason?”
“Ugh! You’re insufferable.”
“You love it.”
“No, I love you. Despite yourself, sometimes.”
Johnny threw the car into park and leaned over the console, taking her face in both his hands. He stared at her, then finally pressed a lingering kiss to her mouth.
-3-
Isis stared at the sign on the building. Blue Balls. “What are we doing here?”
Johnny just smirked. “What do you think?”
“Enough with the games,” she replied, yanking at his hand in hers.
Johnny closed the distance between them and gripped her waist tightly. “No games. Just a few more steps. C’mon.” He tipped his head over his shoulder toward the door.
She huffed out a breath through her nose. “Fine.”
He pulled her toward the door. Then slipped behind her as it opened to guide her through the darkness. The ice of the hockey rink was painted in swirling colors from the bright lights. A familiar bag sat on a nearby bench along with an ice bucket with several long necks peeking out of the ice.
“Are those my skates?”
“Yeah.”
“Is that why you had people running me around all day?”
Gat shrugged. “Easier to steal your shit if you aren’t there.”
“Bastard,” she said with a laugh. She wasn’t the least but upset about it. Isis wrapped her arms around Johnny’s neck, savoring the sensation of his arms circling her waist and holding her tight against him.” So, beer and skating, huh?”
“Figured you could use a night off.”
“Sounds perfect.” Isis stretched up on her tip toes and Johnny met her half way. The kiss deepened quickly, both grasping at one another between gasps of air that seemed far less vital to their continued survival than contact with one another. Eventually, Isis secured the willpower, though not the desire, to break the kiss.
“C’mon.” Isis grappled one of his hand from beneath her blouse, slipping hers into his. Walking backward, she pulled him toward the ice. “Skate with me.”
He just chuckled, a dark rumble that made her nerves tingle. “Just this once,” he agreed after a moment of reluctance.

Hi every person! Ideally, one will have a wonderful equilibrium from assets such that the profile will possess a practical chance from succeeding Brunoexcercisesportal.Info in all settings - when development is actually exceeding desires, when development underperforms, when rising cost of living manages higher than expected, and when inflation manages less than counted on. I presume among the perks of our provider as our team've specified ourselves up to where - if that mix modifications off year to year, it does not actually affect our company positively or negatively given that our experts are actually obtaining a good section of all of them.
McMillon, his management team, and the two million partners from Wal-Mart are providing a routing 12-month operating scope (EBIT, or incomes just before interest and also taxes) at 4.66% from earnings, producing a web revenue frame of 2.92%, i.e. trailing Twelve Month of profit after income taxes split by sales. An additional recommendation is that Lord Rama likewise went to Trikoneshwara temple to get rid of the Brahma hatya Dosham. We are all expecting the summer as well as drop time of great quantity in Vermont; when it thinks that we practically possess good enough to provide our next-door neighbors in necessity. On a GAAP basis, taking into consideration the overtake purchase, our team assume 2018 expense profits to boost 7% to 8%. Our company are actually supposing excellent equity market development along with carried on reduced volatility trading departments. Permit's motivate people to check out little fine art as cost effective and also within the range of everybody at this time of year. As Bryan mentioned earlier, our 2018 aim at is revenues of $11 billion to $11.5 billion as well as incomes per reveal of $9.25. Adjusting for our third one-fourth results, our experts anticipate 2017 incomes in the range of $8.30 to $8.35 every reveal. We assume that in season income tensions experienced during the course of the fourth one-fourth will certainly be much more than countered through a step-by-step boost in interconnection cost savings, price discounts coming from heritage THAT bodies combinations and also strengthened operational procedures that are heavily heavy in the 4th one-fourth, as explained in our 2nd fourth call, boosted unity success related to our 2 recent acquisitions, a reduction in the seasonally high third quarter overhead in our ILEC, and an extra month of Broadview adjusted OIBDAR compared with the 2 months created in 3Q. Online created need sales grew 15% for the fourth and our team continued to increase the amount from those internet purchases that are satisfied through retail stores. Readjusted earnings-per-share increased 11% in the very first three fourths. Gat, Dritcour, as well as others have composed a great deal regarding the effect of social networking sites on unfavorable judgment, both its problematics and abilities, and the expansion of on-line communities around fine art. Excluding the influence from rebuilding costs and also various other charges, readjusted diluted earnings every cooperate the quarter were actually $0.57, compared with $0.60 each cooperate the very first fourth in 2013. Rometty participated in the provider in 1981 and rose to elderly of sales, advertising as well as method prior to being actually named CEO in January 2012. Yet meanwhile, the bull continues to be free of cost to continue its exploration to the much grasps from the stock exchange cosmos featuring to frankly go where the S&P FIVE HUNDRED Mark has certainly never preceded featuring to 3000 and past. As our experts have actually previously expected, there was no product improvement to our net interchange rate in the third sector compared to the 2nd quarter, and also this was in series with our advice initially from the year. Furthermore, UNITED STATE company tax obligation reform might provide an improve to GDP growth, which ought to be a nice tailwind to sales growth and continued drive for the equities market. Yet some of our company are more susceptible to experiencing addicted" to certain wonderful meals or experiencing rigorous food desires. As well as today I started to map the stitchery as well as make the applique parts for part one. Therefore, we understand there were daytime gos absorbed Tucson - why were actually those certainly not launched? Nonetheless, our experts perform want to resume opportunistic acquisitions from company assets in 2018 at a degree adequate to balance out dip coming from choices exercises.

Road widening project to improve safety, traffic flow in Coron
#PHinfo: Road widening project to improve safety, traffic flow in Coron
According to DPWH-Mimaropa regional director Wilfredo Mallari, a total of P2.26 billion will be needed to fully complete the widening of Coron-Busuanga Road which stretches 73.6 kilometers. (Photo courtesy of DPWH)
Quezon City, Feb 4 (PIA) -- The 73-kilometer Coron-Busuanga Road in Palawan is underway to improve traffic flow in the area and promote road safety among locals and tourists of Coron, Palawan.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Mimaropa Regional Director Wilfredo Mallari said the widening from two lanes to four lanes of Coron-Busuanga Road is currently being undertaken to improve access to famous tourist destinations both in Coron and Busuanga towns.
“A P100-million widening project of Coron-Busuanga Road is already ongoing to meet the high demand of tourists from F.B. Reyes International Airport in Busuanga going to Coron town proper and vice versa. Once completed, this will result to improved road safety and traffic flow especially during summer peak season,” said Director Mallari.
According to Director Mallari, a total of P2.26 billion will be needed to fully complete the widening of Coron-Busuanga Road which stretches 73.6 kilometers.
“We hope for the continued funding of this project as this will support Coron’s tourism industry, which is a driving force of job creation and poverty reduction in the area. Better roads will also provide convenience to locals especially small-scale traders transporting agricultural and fishery products to bigger markets,” added Director Mallari.
The widening of Coron-Busuanga Road, which started in 2017, is being implemented by DPWH Palawan First District Engineering Office. (GATS/PIAMimaropa)

FirstEnergy Ohio Utilities plans to purchase 11,400 MWh in solar RECs
New Post published on http://roofnrays.com/firstenergy-ohio-utilities-plans-to-purchase-11400-mwh-in-solar-recs/
FirstEnergy Ohio Utilities plans to purchase 11,400 MWh in solar RECs
Electrical utility FirstEnergy issued a request for proposal (RFP) to purchase both Ohio-compliant solar renewable energy credits (SRECs) and renewable energy credits (RECs) for its Ohio utilities — Ohio Edison, The Illuminating Company and Toledo Edison. The purchases will help meet the companies’ 2019 renewable energy targets established under Ohio’s alternative energy law.
RECs sought in this RFP must be eligible for compliance with the companies’ 2019 renewable energy obligations in accordance with rules and procedures put forth by the Public Utilities Commission of Ohio (PUCO), be deliverable through PJM Environmental Information System Generation Attribute Tracking System (EIS GATS), and generated between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2019. The companies plan to purchase 11,400 SRECs and 401,200 RECs.
One SREC represents the environmental attributes of 1 MWh of generation from a solar renewable generating facility qualified by the PUCO. One REC represents the environmental attributes of 1 MWh of generation from a PUCO-qualified renewable generating facility. The cost of the RECs is recovered from utility customers through a monthly charge filed quarterly with the PUCO.
No energy or capacity will be purchased under the RFP. The number of individual bidders is not limited. Participants in the RFP must meet and maintain specific credit and security qualifications and must be able to prove their SREC or REC generating facilities are certified or in the process of becoming certified by the PUCO.
Based on the RFP results, the Ohio utilities will enter into an agreement with winning suppliers to purchase the necessary quantities of RECs and SRECs.
FirstEnergy’s Ohio utilities have a website to provide bidders with a central source of documents, data and other information for the RFP process.
To participate in the RFP, potential bidders are encouraged to submit credit applications by October 29, 2019, and proposals are due November 5, 2019, by 5 p.m. EST.

The global fitness drive can be sensed by the spurt in the demand for health booster foods, which has further transferred its impact on the sales of ingredients including beverage encapsulants. Companies offering functional beverages have been finding more number of consumers every year, which has augmented the demand for beverage encapsulants. The demand for functional beverages has been high among the young population; however, the demand is also observed to grow from the elderly population globally, consequently driving the demand for beverage encapsulants. Beverages are an excellent carrier of functional ingredients, which further advocates the growing demand for beverage encapsulants.
Beverage encapsulants industry – continuous effort for innovation
Shifts in consumer behavior and preferences and uncertainty of raw materials supply have been the key issues troubling the food and beverage manufacturers, retailers and foodservice businesses. Beverage manufacturers globally, have started to rejuvenate their portfolio with innovative solutions including the beverage encapsulants. The increasing use of beverage encapsulants makes the businesses of beverage providers more sustainable, not only due to the increasing demand for food embedded with them, but also due to the enhanced production efficiency imparted by beverage encapsulants. Beverage encapsulants reduces the water and energy consumption during the manufacturing process. Beverage encapsulants also stabilizes the flavor and texture of beverages.
Nanoencapsulation and microencapsulation – the two common technologies for beverage encapsulants
Nanoencapsulation and microencapsulation are the two common technologies in the field of beverage encapsulants. Microencapsulation aids the addition of oil-substitute functional ingredients to beverages, which is also one the reasons for the increasing demand for beverage encapsulants. The newer forms of beverages have been observed to use beverage encapsulants. For instance, smoothies and citrus oils use beverage encapsulants. On the other hand, nanoencapsulation allows the incorporation of active ingredients including antioxidants, flavors, or antimicrobials efficiently without the need to compromise with the organoleptic properties.
Social media – a silent though important driver for beverage encapsulants demand
While the manufacturers of functional beverages have been exerting their utmost effort to advertise their products, social media has played an autonomous driver for this industry. This has consequently jolted the demand for beverage encapsulants. Several consumers search for free consultations from the consumers having successful attempts of changing their food and drinks habits. Social media being one of the mediums for discussions about food and drink experiences have led to the surge in demand for beverage encapsulants. The growing scope of social media as a communication platform has also been leading to the cross-cultural and cross-geographical discussions, which has resulted in the adoption of healthy practices in the emerging regions with growing disposable incomes, consequently creating new sales avenues for beverage encapsulants.

North America has been the largest market for functional foods; and for the beverage encapsulants as well. The fitness drive in European countries is expected to augment the demand for beverage ingredients in the region. On the other hand, Asia-Pacific, a larger part of the demand for beverage encapsulants is through China and Japan, though India is expected to emerge as a potential market in the years to come. The demand for beverage encapsulants in the U.S. has been growing at a considerable pace; however, the demand in Canada is projected to witness faster growth in the mid-terms.
Beverage encapsulants - a moderately competitive market
Beverage encapsulants market is moderately competitive with the presence of a sizeable number of players, some of them having a considerable market share, while others are yet to find a strong foothold. Ingredieon, GAT Food Essentials, Balchem, Smart Cups, Lycored Group, and ABCO Laboratories are some of the key providers of beverage encapsulants. The beverage encapsulants market is flourishing with organic and inorganic developments. For instance, Smart Cups, a U.S.-based company has launched beverage encapsulants in the form of printed 3-D-polycapsule in 2017. These beverage encapsulants are marketed as self-stirring and biodegradable cups, which on itself makes an energy drink on addition of water. The beverage ingredients are microencapsulated in the printed form inside the cups. During the same year, Innovative Food Processors (IFP), Inc., a manufacturer of agglomerated and microencapsulated food and nutrition ingredients was acquired by Balchem Corporation.

2017 Philippine data on healthy behaviors, supplements, and local government health initiatives
I share three supplemental insights to the recently released 2017 Philippine Demographic and Health Survey.
The Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) is a treasure trove of health data utilized by almost 100 countries. The Philippines had its seventh round in 2017, and it is the largest health survey to date. Around 27,000 households participated, double from the last round in 2013. A full report and open-source access to the data sets are always provided as each round is concluded (access the 2017 files here, by making a free account, then sending a request to access the data; approval happens within 48 hours).
Because of this, researchers like me are able to conduct our own secondary analyses. As hundreds of variables are included in the DHS survey questionnaire, not all will make it to the full report.
This post (rather, three smaller posts) is the first in a series of supplemental analyses I am doing on the 2017 DHS. Note that most of these analyses are descriptive in nature, for reasons I will discuss below and in future posts. I use Stata 15 to clean and analyze the data, and all files are available upon request (Best to tweet me or send me a DM at @mockingjason).
What do Filipinos do to keep healthy?
The 2013 and 2017 DHS asked a question about what survey participants do to keep themselves healthy. They responded freely and their answers were recorded across multiple categories. The top 5 responses are shown below:
The results are hardly surprising. When unprompted, Filipinos say they keep healthy by eating right, being physically active and sleep enough hours. No significant differences were noted between males and females. Higher education and higher wealth were correlated with higher proportions of reported healthy behavior.
Two interesting things are of note. First, much fewer respondents mentioned what they avoid, such as smoking (8% in 2017). In contrast, the latest Global Adult Tobacco Survey (GATS) reports that only a quarter of Filipinos were current smokers in 2015. Assuming the data are directly comparable (at least on a national-level perspective), there were two-thirds of Filipinos who were not able to actively mention what they do about smoking.
Second, the way the categories were formulated are in no way a comprehensive assessment of a healthy lifestyle. The mere mention that certain food groups were consumed are not an indication of a healthy lifestyle - any nutritionist-dietitian will tell you that all food and drink must be taken in moderation. There were also vaguely defined responses such as “maintain happy personality” or “maintain good hygiene.”
I would caution against any further analysis of the responses. Measurement through self-reporting in a quantitative survey is one of the worst ways to collect data on health behaviors. First, people lie - who would want to admit that they are not doing at least one thing to keep themselves healthy? Second, restricting responses to certain categories, no matter how many, prevent the depth necessary to understand the complexity of health behavior. In many social and behavioral research studies, qualitative or mixed method (quantitative and qualitative) approaches are more appropriate.
Perhaps the data may be more appropriate in presenting perceptions of Filipinos on what a healthy lifestyle is, not necessarily what their actual behaviors are.
2. How much do Filipinos patronize supplements?
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) ordered the replacement of the old “No Approved Therapeutic Claim” label for dietary supplements and other related products with the advisory, “Mahalagang Paalala: Ang (name of product) ay hindi gamot at hindi dapat gamiting panggamot sa anumang uri ng sakit” in 2014, after a long court battle with the Chamber of Herbal Industries of the Philippines.
The change was intended to better educate Filipinos when purchasing these products. The 2017 DHS had a series of questions related to this advisory, summarized in the following infographic:
A good majority of Filipinos were aware of the advisory. Of these, around a third have purchased products with this advisory. Of these, around two-thirds claim that they have purchased these products as a need.
Recall of the advisory seems to be good, and FDA may be concerned with that majority of consumers who said that they considered supplements as a need. However, there were no other follow-up questions that provide more context. What is a “need,” exactly, in this sense? Is it a need in the same way that medicines are a need to treat certain diseases? Is it a need because it complements the benefits of medicines? The categories could have been phrased more clearly.
The definition of supplements may also differ across respondents. The Food and Drug Administration defines a “Food/Dietary Supplement” as “a processed food product intended to supplement the diet that bears or contains one or more of the following dietary ingredients: vitamin, mineral, herb, or other botanical, amino acid, and dietary substance to increase the total daily intake in amounts conforming to the latest Philippine recommended energy and nutrient intakes or internationally agreed minimum daily requirements. It usually is in the form of capsules, tablets, liquids, gels, powders or pills and not represented for use as a conventional food or as the sole item of a meal or diet or replacement of drugs and medicines.” (Note: I cannot find a public copy of the FDA Administrative Order 2010-008 but I have an internal copy available upon request).
Dietary supplements with outlandish claims, such as fruit-based products that claim to “cure” cancer, definitely deserve the FDA warning. But what about iron and folic acid supplements, which are actually essential public health interventions for pregnant women? Moreover, a quick search of available television commercials of these supplements on YouTube seem to imply that there are a number of companies violating the FDA regulation.
What is the point of the questions, exactly? If the intention was to determine the impact of the revised advisory on consumer choices regarding their health, then these questions do not provide enough insight. If the intention was to determine if recall of the advisory is good, then the question about awareness was good.
3. What do Filipinos appreciate from their local governments when it comes to providing health services?
Health service delivery is devolved to local governments, thus experiences may range from wealthy city governments being able to heavily subsidize health care through specific colored cards to rural municipalities struggling to retain basic health care staff. The 2017 DHS had a series of questions asking survey participants what health services they know are being initiated by their local government, and whether they have ever utilized any of those services. The responses regarding awareness were unprompted, then probing questions were asked to determine utilization. Top 5 services are shown below:
Only four-fifths (82%) of participants reported any health initiative by their local government. Only two programs were known by more than half of the participants - free medicines and free medical consultation. The results seem to show a gap in the actual service delivery, awareness about it, or both.
Also, many of the programs that the participants mentioned are more likely to have been provided by national government rather than local government. For one, most vaccines are procured by the Department of Health (DOH) and provided for free under the Mandatory Infants and Children Health Immunization Act of 2011. Medicines for prevalent diseases such as tuberculosis are also provided for free by DOH. Some of the public doctors providing free medical consultation may have had their salaries paid by DOH through the Doctors to the Barrios Program and not as retained staff of the local government. There are many complexities to the Philippine health system that the questions failed to capture.
Key Points
The three graphs I presented provide us with a limited understanding of the current state of health in the country. The key takeaways I want to highlight are:
Filipinos seem to be reporting some level of healthy behaviors, and they express it in terms of eating certain food groups, doing some physical activity, and getting what they perceive is enough sleep.
Most Filipinos are aware of the new advisory on supplements, and a significant proportion continue to patronize them and consider them as a need.
Local governments, in general, seem to be not doing enough in providing basic health services to Filipinos.
I also highlighted key limitations of the analysis, which I also hope are important takeaways:
Not all questions can be answered through a quantitative survey. While the huge sample size is helpful to have a clearer national view of the health situation, it doesn’t seem to do anything to mitigate accuracy issues.
Questions may need to be revisited for future rounds of the NDHS as they seem to be vague and muddle possible insights one can gather from the data.
I hope we always take a nuanced look at whatever pieces of data are being presented before us, especially with indicators that directly affect human lives.
