In honour of Yorkshire Day - 1st August 2018:
OWT ELSE PALES WHEN COMPARED T’ TH’ DALES
There’s more than just the one Clapham
Not only the big ugly one down South
The one up North; in’t Dales as it happens
Much sought out by walkers, word of mouth
Them to challenge. No mean feat, nor heaven sent
Infamous in this land many oft of them do speak
Mighty Whernside, Ingleborough and Pen Y Ghent
Climb them. Do it, and conquer those three peaks
What to say about Malham? Quaint
Janet’s Foss. Its world-famous cove
Nestled cosy in its self-named dale. Ain’t
It a special northern treasure trove
‘Til all at once the peace is broken
Hoards arrive for to soak up the charm
They ramble and gambol and cycle. Spirits awoken
Slurp iced cream and then walk the tarn
In Kettlewell - yeah that’s a place mate
Each year hold a famous festival
Folk descend on it for fair and fete
Stuff straw in old used clothes; a spectacle
To honour ol’ Worzel scarecrows fashioned out
Created to be shown off. Loud and proud
A village that knows what good fun is about
Happy always to delight all its visiting crowds
In sleepy Settle where marks the start
Of the most epically scenic road of rail
Fine stone buildings; elegant and smart
Impress. Delight, and charm without fail
From here if you were to catch a train
Look out of the window and you’re hooked
As the clackety clack; wheels on track beat refrain
Dance you magically in awe; o’er Ribblehead Viaduct
Mile upon mile of dry stone wall. As a jigsaw complete
Limestone pavement with its grikes and its clints
High moorland landscape. Awesome; dramatic, and replete
Silent cool gorges and waterfalls through which sun glints
So be it Fossdale. Coverdale. Grisedale, or Little
Ribblesdale. Garsdale. Wensleydale, or Dent
Wharfedale. Nidderdale. Widdale, or Litton
Like sweet Yorkshire Mixture we each have our bent
A landmark. Favourite view of this land that we roam
Dramatic valley. Special place where memories made
For me times in Grisedale; dale that died ends this poem
Sleepy stunning and haunting. Charms that never will fade
