Hello, would you like to hear a fun story about the first time I saw these guys in real life?

So I moved to Bologna in September 2013, and on my second or third day there I walked into the city centre, about half an hour walk away from my flat. I walked in from the west, which mean that my first view of these guys was this:

I'd heard the towers leaned, but looking at them this way I thought, 'huh, they must not lean very far. What cool towers!'

And trundled on along my way, walking towards where I was told I would be having classes. As I go down via Zamboni, which held lots of my university buildings, I turn around to get my bearings and my heart STOPS. Because this is what I see:

And my lizard brain goes 'FUCK YOU'RE GONNA DIE, THAT TOWER'S FALLING DOWN AND YOU'RE GONNA DIEEEEEE'. And then I take a breath and realise the tower *isn't moving*. And look around at all these Italians happily going around their daily business while a GIGANTIC health and safety hazard just sits there in the middle of their city.

So anyway, yeah, that's the story of how the first time I saw these dudes I had a brief moment of terror and believed I was going to witness a huge disaster in the first few days of my year abroad.

Two Towers of Bologna, Italy The Two Towers, the Asinelli and the Garisenda are among the most famous. The Asinelli Tower, standing at 97 meters, and the Garisenda Tower, at 48 meters, are located at the intersection of roads leading to the five gates of Bologna's old ring wall. Their names come from the families traditionally credited with their construction between 1109 and 1119, although the exact attribution remains uncertain due to the scarcity of documents from that era. The towers might have been part of a competition between these families to demonstrate power.

Bolonia (Italia) era una ciudad llena de torres en los siglos XII-XIII. Quedan las dos más destacadas, conocidas como las Dos Torres, la torre Garisenda (48 m de altura) y la torre Asinelli (97,6 m de altura).

Sunto del weekend perché è stato proprio interessante. Sabato prove di orchestra un po' mistiche e tre quarti d'ora per tornare a casa a causa delle deviazioni degli autobus per la Garisenda cadenda. Amica è venuta da me a cena e abbiamo fatto una cenetta super autunnale, poi siamo uscite ed è stato tutto così carino e davvero non me l'aspettavo. È rimasta a dormire da me e domenica mattina abbiamo fatto una colazione ancora più carina della cena del giorno precedente e poi abbiamo passato tutta la mattina a intagliare zucche. Poi lei è andata, a pranzo è venuta nonna e la giornata è completamente declinata.
