a/n: WOW LOOK AT ME ACTUALLY PRODUCING CONTENT FOR ONCE IN MY LIFE. anyway, enjoy <3 there’s so much plot tho. -eden<3
Tumblr media
it all started a few weeks ago. you had just moved into a small, but cozy, cabin in the forest in an attempt to find yourself. the city life was slowly chipping away at your mental health and you knew that if you didn’t give yourself a breather you would lose your mind. so, you packed up all your stuff and came out here.
thankfully, you had found a job that could work remotely and on the schedule that you chose, so working wasn’t an issue. the realtor who sold you the place said that the last owner had unfortunately passed away, not in the house thank god, and their family just wanted to be rid of it. you were a tad suspicious as to why, but the realtor assured you that it was simply because they’re not outdoorsy. you still bought mace and a taser to put your mind at ease.
when you moved in, you were taken aback by how beautiful the surrounding forest was. there was about 35 feet of cleared area surrounding your cabin, but the forest border was lined with beautiful wildflowers. the forest itself was lush and green, the occasional coo of a bird reaching your ears. and because of the clearing, you had a beautiful window to the sky that you’re sure will be full of stars at night. there were planting boxes that you inherited from the previous owner, as well as some basic gardening equipment that you fully intended to use. the nearest store was over 12 miles away, so you planned on growing your own food if you could.
the inside of the house is modest, but more than enough for you. it has two bedrooms and a bathroom downstairs, as well as a full kitchen with a breakfast nook built in to enjoy meals, and a small living area. upstairs there is one more bathroom and a large open space that you planned to use as an office and a studio for your hobbies.
you unpacked what was necessary to make dinner and shower, and planned to unpack the rest in the coming week. you ate dinner at your small dining table, and silently thanked the moving company that had already brought your large furniture. you took a quick shower before jumping into bed, exhausted from your day.
<3
in the coming days you followed through with your plans of unpacking. you also began your garden, and set up your office/studio on the upper level. it wasn’t until you had been there for exactly a week that you saw it. you had been on your porch stargazing, your prediction about the clearing was correct, when you heard a the crunch and crack of walking on dead leaves and twigs being broken to your left. your head snapped in that direction and you made eye contact with the biggest grizzly bear you had ever seen. okay, it was the first grizzly bear you had ever seen, but shit that thing was huge!
it took the bear made a move as if it was going to come closer, slightly lifting its head to sniff in your direction, for you to snap back to reality. you shot up from your chair and darted inside, locking all three of the locks on the door before peaking out of the window to see if it was still there, the lamp lights you had lining the forest line allowing you to see. the sight you were met with made your heart ache a little in your chest. the bear had backed up a tad, clearly startled by your outburst, and was glancing from where you had been to the door you just slammed shut with a sad look on its face, before trudging off into the forest.
something g about the sight made you forget how dangerous bears are, and you were suddenly overcome with the urge to comfort the poor thing. however, it was late and you wanted to get an early start tomorrow, so you simply headed off to bed, silently wishing the bear the best.
the next day you went about your routine feeling as if someone was watching you, but it wasn’t unpleasant. it felt like someone was looking after you, making sure you were safe. it was comforting in a strange way.
that night you were out stargazing again, secretly hoping to see the same bear from before. it wasn’t until a few hours in that you saw movement out of the corner of your eye. you turn you head, only slightly as to not scare it, and see a grizzly bear peaking its head around a large pine tree. and while you can’t be sure if it’s the same one from before, you can’t help the giggle you let out at the bear trying so hard to hide, yet not realizing it is much to big to fit its whole body behind the skinny tree trunk. the bear flinches back a little at the noise, but quickly recovers and begins to move closer to the forest line. you still pretend to not see it, knowing that you’re close enough to the door to make it in safe if it does decide to do anything.
once it gets about a foot from the forest line, the bear tries its best to quietly lay down in a loaf shape, almost the way a cat would, seemingly trying to make itself as small as possible. it makes quite a lot of noise as it does this, but you still pretend to be unaware.
after the bear settles down, it simply watches you. it’s big brown eyes just gazing at you as you gaze at the stars. it’s so cute, you think to yourself, as it presses its ears pack and rests its head on the floor every time you move your head, doing its best not to be seen. eventually, you have to head inside. you feel a bit sad to leave the bear, but your tired from your work today and need the rest. the bear once again tries to shrink itself when you stand, but remains in place as you gather up your blanket, phone, and mug before heading inside.
<3
it continues like this for about two more weeks. you do your daily work, eat dinner, then head outside to stargaze and are joined by your bear friend. however, you have began to greet him with a simple, “hello”, in a soft tone as to not scare it away. the first time you did it, it ran and hid behind the nearest tree, and slowly inched its way back over the course of the night after realizing that you were not going to harm it or run away.
today, you planned of having a picnic out on the lawn. it was cool enough, and it was a beautiful day. quite a few of your plants have started to ripen, and your exited to try your harvest. plus, after all the hard work you’ve been putting into making this place feel like home these past few weeks, you deserve a relaxing picnic!
you set up your blanket and basket right along the forest line, planning on making a flower crown and bouquet for your table from the pretty while flowers that grow there while you happily munch away. you had packed some finger sandwiches, water, lots of fruit, and some honey to dip them it.
you had just finished your first flower crown when you heard a twig snap somewhere in front of you. this was something you were used to, but it still caught your attention. you were planning on simply glancing at what made the noise, but dropped your grape upon seeing a very large man. you froze, he froze, and you both stared at each other while trying to figure out what to do. it was during this period that you noticed the fluffy, round, brown ears on his head. upon realizing that he was bear hybrid, you felt a little more calm, but still shaken due to the almost completely naked man who was towering over you with biceps bigger than your head. you were calmed even more by the way he seemed to be, how do i put this, fucking panicking? his eyes were darting everywhere but at you, he was playing with his fingers, curling into himself, and shifting his weight ever few seconds.
as you open your mouth to say something he cuts you off with a ramble of, “i-i sorry. it s-sm-mells go-od and i-mm hungry.”
every word had some kind of stutter or stretch and he almost looked like he was shaking. your heart aches for him, so you shift over on your blanket and pat the spot next to you with a welcoming smile on your face. “you can come eat if you want, i have plenty of food!” you spoke in a gentle voice.
his eyes shot up to you, wide as can be, and his mouth seemed to part in shock. he quickly stutter out a small, “r-really?” and you smiled again while nodding.
he quickly moves to join you on the blanket, still fidgeting every now and then, but ultimately looking more comfortable than he did a few minutes ago!
you move the try of sandwiches and fruit between the two of you as well as the honey. you can see that he hesitates to grab something, so you pick up an apple slice and dipped it in the honey, then happily munched away while pretending to focus on anything other than the massive bear man beside you. following your example, he gently plucks a grape from the bunch and chews. after that, he is more confident, picking up and munching on all the food he wants. from the sandwiches to the fruits, he even had some water too.
you sat in a comfortable silence for a while before you heard his small, raspy voice ask, “can i have some honey too?”
you had to fight to keep to coo you desperately wanted to release from moving past your lips, so you cleared your throat before offering him the jar with a soft, “of course you can” you noticed his eyes light up at that. and he seemed to relax even more with ever bite he ate.
as the sun started to set, you began to pack up. his eyebrows furrowed, and without thinking he blurted out, “aren’t you going to look at the stars?”
you froze your movement of placing the trey in your basket, and slowly turned to look at him. once your eyes landed on him you noticed how he was madly blushing and staring at the blanket as if it was the most interesting thing in the world.
a small smile of realization grew across your face, but you wanted to mess with him a bit. “how do you know i look at the stars?” you ask in a teasing tone.
“his eyes got wide but his gaze remained on the blanket. “i- um, m-my friend s-said that you do it sometimes!” he rushed out with a squeak.
“really?” you begin, “because i only ever see one animal when i stargaze and i didn’t think he was the kind to talk about me behind my back.” you say softly, setting your trap.
his eyes snapped up to yours at that, “i don’t!” his blush darkened once he realized what he admitted.
you giggled at his reaction before reassuring him that you were not upset, and inviting him back to have dinner with you tomorrow while you stargaze. still red, he grew a big smile and quickly accepted. you have him the rest of the food to take with him back to his home, and watched him happily trot off into the forest.
<3
well, one night turned into two nights, two nights turned into every night, and every night turned into picnics at noon and dinner past sunset while sitting a little too close and watching the blues, purples, and pinks of the sky melt into a soft midnight blue.
you learned that his name was asahi, and that he had a few other friends in the forms of crows, squirrels, and deer, but no other bears. you also learned that he thought you were very pretty when you moved in and desperately wanted to spend time with you, but didn’t want to scare you off. which is why he looked so crestfallen on that first night that you ran away, and tried to be so sneaky when he came back. you also figured out that asahi is generally nervous. as the weeks past he got much more comfortable with you, but whenever he was struggling with something or trying something new, he acted the same way that he did when he joined you for your picnic. and over that same course of time, you began liking him more and more. you looked forward to seeing him every day, and he began feeling the same for you.
one night, you were cuddled up on your picnic blanket gazing at the stars. he was laying on his back and you were curled into his side with your ear on his chest, letting the rise and fall as well as his steady heartbeat relax you. in an effort to get more comfortable, you lifted your leg to rest it along his hip. suddenly you heard his heartbeat pick up, to the point where you would say a band was playing in his chest. worried that you were making him uncomfortable, and knowing damn well that he’s too nervous to say anything if he was, you moved to slide your leg off, only to be stopped by his big hand gripping your thigh. surprised, you snap your head up to look at his face and are met with a very red asahi. in an effort to get a better look at him, you press a hand on his chest to help boost yourself up and not only hear, but feel the deep growl he released rumble through his chest and straight down to your core.
“asahi,” you begin, “are you alright? i can move if-“
“no!” he shouts. in a calmer, but still rushed voice he continued, “i-i mean, no, you don’t have to move.”
still worried for him, you proceed with your earlier plan of sliding your leg off of him to get into a more platonic position, but receive another deep growl when your thigh brushes against something hard, and big. your eyes widened and you froze, you could feel the heat spreading through your own cheeks. his grip on your thigh tightened once again, and he slowly began to move your leg back and forth along his cloth covered length. you glanced back up at his face to find him staring straight up at the sky, blush still prominent, and sharp canines digging into his lower lip.
feeling bold, you shifted yourself again so that you were straddling his hips, cheek still rested against his chest. you grabbed his free hand and the one from your thigh and placed them on your waist before you began to rock your hips against him. this produced yet another deep growl from the bear and a soft whine from you.
his grip on your waist tightened as he took control of your movement and forced you to rock faster and harder. when you released a breathy moan his grip tightened even more, then suddenly he flipped you onto your back. his claws had already penetrated your shirt, so he simply curled them and pulled to rip it to shreds, then did the same with your shorts. his heavy pants and hip rolls never stopped as he took in your body, only covered by the thin material of your underwear. you looked up at him with wide doe eyes and parted lips that he desperately ached to pepper with kisses, he couldn’t get enough of you.
you shifted slightly, trying to sit up so that you could kiss him, touch him, only to be stopped by a growl that sent shivers up your spine and a giant hand on your chest pushing you back down. “stay down,” asahi growled with a slight snarl, “you have no idea how long i’ve wanted this, wanted you,” he continued as he yanked his pants off, “and now i finally get to have you in all the ways i dreamed of,” he lowered himself so that his chest was pressed to yours and your lips were only a breath away, “so be good for me little one, and i’ll make sure you feel just as good as i do.”
you could feel even more heat rush to your cheeks and a continuous throb at your core from his words alone. feelings that only intensified when he ripped your underwear to shreds and buried his head between your legs. his fluffy brown ears twitch as he whines once he finally has a taste of you. asahis hands grip your thighs, his sharp claws slightly digging into your skin as he eats you like a starved man. when you glance down at him from your position, you can see his hips rutting into the blanket in time with the thrusts of his tongue.
he moves one of his hands from your thigh, giving you a glare that reads “stay put”, before shoving two of his big fingers into your cunt. his lips move to lock around your clit and he times his sucks with the curl of his fingers so that both of your pleasure points are being stimulated at the same time. his pace increases with the volume of your cries, whines, and whimpers of pleasure, brown ears never ceasing their twitches to catch every one as it falls from your lips. you reach a hand down to slightly tug on his still tied up hair and earn a deep, rumbled growl on your clit. the vibration makes your hips buck into his face, and his free hand moves from your thigh to your abdomen before pushing down hard with another growl.
“stay. put. little one.” he rumbles before quickly returning to your clit to continue his assault.
with the never-ending stimulation in your clit, along with the curl of his, now three, fingers on your g-spot, it’s no surprise to you how quickly you come undone. your cries become high pitched and breathy, and it becomes harder for you to keep your hips from bucking into asahis face. your grip on his hair increases which makes the bear moan directly onto your clit. your vision turned spotty as you reach your high, asahis fingers and tongue carrying you through it. he begins to slow his movement after a few moments to allow you to come down from your high.
your eyelids flutter open and closed until you catch his big body looming over yours. once your eyes fully open your locked into his loving, lustful gaze that makes your body melt down into the blanket and you legs fall open.
“are you okay with continuing little one?” he asks in a soft voice while brushing a small strand of hair away from your face, “we can stop now if you’re tired.”
“n-no,” your slightly shocked by the rasp to your voice, but continue none the less, “i want to keep going, i want you so bad, please!”
asahi simply smiles lovingly down at you before lining his throbbing cock up with your dripping cunt. you feel the stretch as the head pops past your entrance, slightly wincing but offering a nod when asahi gives you a look of concern. as he inches in you notice the rise and fall of his chest increase to a pant, and his hands are curled into tight fists by the sides of your head. it’s only when he hurried to the hilt that he lets out a strangled cry and a depraved, almost feral growl. his eyes dart up to yours when his hips begin to rock almost on their own accord, silently begging you to give him some sign that it’s okay to move. when you give him a small smile and nod, his hands rush to grab the backs of your knees and pin them to your chest. after his first, real thrust the bear lets out the most terrifying growl you’ve ever heard him produce, but it only sends a shiver of pleasure down your spine to your clenching cunt.
asahi clearly feels said clench, because he bares his sharp teeth and grips your thighs tighter while picking up the pace of his hips. driving himself into your dripping, soft, warm, pretty pussy with all of the strength he can muster. the thought of not being able to walk tomorrow would cross your mind if you could use it, but the strong bear above you is the only thing on you can think of. you can see the ripple and tensing of his muscles as he fucks you like his life depends on it, slamming his hips into yours like he’s trying to breach your cervix.
“so pretty, so pretty little one, so good, so good for me, just for me” each phrase is spoke between pants, moans, and growls. asahis thrusts never faltering, stuttering, or stopping. “taking me so well pretty baby, my pretty baby, mine”
the possessive undertone to his words flies over your head as you can feel your second orgasm approaching at a rapid rate. his breath stutters when he feels you clench tighter around his cock, quickly understanding and moving his hand to rub fast circles on your clit. before he places his fingers where you need them, he moves your legs so that his other hand is holding both of your ankles together high by your head. now, with his thumb circling your clit and the tightness the new position creates, your high hits your like a truck with no breaks. your vision goes completely white this time, the pleasurable feeling spreading from your scalp all the way down to the tips of your toes.
your orgasm triggered asahis, his hips stuttering while he whines and whimpers, spurts of his cum painting your silky insides. he drops your legs and moves his hands to grip your hips while he continues to rock his own into you. letting out shaky sighs and ahhs as he does.
once his hips come to a stop, he hunches over to pepper kisses all over your face, then nuzzles his nose into your neck, breathing a sigh of content while his hands stroke along your hips and stomach.
you reach your hands up to play with his hair, twirling the strands between your fingers. your heart starts racing for a different reason when you hear his whisper a little, “i love you” a large smile breaking out onto your face before you whisper it back.
asahis grip around your waist tightens as he rolls onto his back. keeping his cock lodged inside you while he positions you on his chest. the movement reminds you that he has yet to pull out, “asahi? aren’t you going to pull out?”
“no,” he begins, nuzzling his nose into your hair with his voice still breathy, “if we just keep it in the we won’t have to stretch you out when we go again.”

Veganism for Conservation
Tumblr media
Wikipedia defines veganism as “ the practice of abstaining from the use of animal products, particularly in diet, and an associated philosophy that rejects the commodity status of animals. An individual who follows the diet or philosophy is known as a vegan.”
This is different than vegetarianism, which is a non-meat diet. Vegetarians still use animal products like eggs and dairy, while veganism does not. Some people that practice veganism extend the philosophy to their clothing, not wearing leather, and sometimes even wool.
A lot of us have probably interacted with vegans on the internet in posts such as this:
Tumblr media
Personally, my interactions with people who practice veganism have been limited to glimpsing internet brawls like this. Because of this, vegans get a bad name. I’m sure Christians can relate: that one wild-eyed priest going on about how homophobia is a sin. He may speak for all Christians, but he cannot represent them.
My point of this is, going into this post, please approach veganism or vegetarianism with an open mind. This post is not hating on vegans, and it is not trying to convert anyone to veganism. By pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of vegan and non-vegan philosophies, I hope to increase understanding.
Where Veganism Succeeds
Tumblr media
When it comes to images like this, vegans and vegetarians are sometimes the first to call out animal cruelty. This is not without substance. This PDF article from the University of Kentucky covers some of the issues very well. The main issue is Confined Animal Feeding Operations (CAFO) or “factory farms”.  The ultimate goals of the factories are ‘cheap food’. Animals are kept in confined spaces, and given antibiotics and growth hormones to counteract the spread of diseases and parasites (in some cases it doesn’t work). Ironically, some of these drugs are outlaws in the UK, due to the adverse human health effects. Factory farms are a monopolized industry free of heavy regulations of other large-scale operations. Though the FDA and USDA oversee inspections and health regulations, it only helps so much. The Animal Welfare Act of 1966 does not extend to farm animals.
A common response is “Shut down farms!” But it’s not as simple as that.  The next article covers the Pro’s and con’s of farming. Farms are run different in different places of the world, and always full of contradictions. Livestock can improve the health of prairie grasslands, but also overgraze them. Animal manure can improve soil health and pollute rivers. While places like America need less meat, poor families in Cambodia may need more protein in their diet. I whole-heartedly support shutting down CAFO’s, but farming in general. Small-scale family farms are a great example of farming with ecosystem and animal health in mind.
Tumblr media
One problem with holding animals indoors - even if you feed them well, make them comfortable, keep them from getting sick - is lack of mental stimulation. No species on Earth processes the world the same way. Cows don’t think they same way humans do, but they are living animals designed to do certain things.  A video I watched last year for my animal behavior class (If I could find the video, I’d add it) followed a group of hens brought from a factory farm to a new free-range home. A series of experiment were set up to observe their behavior. When presented with building materials, the hens proceeded to build a nest - even though a nest was already made for them by the caregivers. Animals have inherent behaviors that they will carry out if giving the opportunity. This may not have any impact on the health/quality of the meat or products, but it can give the animals mental exercise and therefor reduce stress.
Recent years have brought in increased in what is dubbed the “locavores.” Locavores is basically a person who eats locally, or within a 100mile radius. They may buy more produce from farmers markets, or get their meat from hunting and fishing locally. (Minnesota has a bag limit of 5 whitetail deer. A successful hunter could stock up food for their family for an entire year without ever buying meat from a grocery store!). Food handling, processing, and transportation takes up a lot of our yearly energy costs, not to mention food shipped from another country is going to be more expensive, and sometimes, less fresh.
The Locavores Movement wasn’t exactly pushed by vegans, but I’m going to include it here because it’s a win for everyone. After WWII, agriculture was becoming more commercialized. Big, industrial farms with lots of land and machinery was out-competing small family farms. Later on, the 60′s and 70′s sparked a ‘back to the land’ movement (a big time for environmental policies). It encouraged relationships between communities and local farmers. Though many small family farms are still financially struggling, the Locavores movement is increasing, as people are becoming more aware of where their food is coming from and their dietary health.
Tumblr media
Where Veganism Fall’s Short
Tumblr media
Animal anthropomorphization - defined as ‘ the attribution of human traits, emotions, or intentions to non-human entities’. Giving animals human-like appearances such as walking on two legs, fingers, eyebrows, and having them think and act like humans. This is present in any Disney cartoon regarding animals. Bambi is the most famous, and even created what is known as “Bambi Syndrome”, a belief based on the movie that paints nature as a garden of Eden with no natural predators - which is grossly inaccurate.
Anthropomorphization is not inherently bad, I enjoy watching Disney cartoons and sometimes its fun to imagine animals acting like people. However, there are people who seem to believe than animals really do process the world exactly like people do, and their interactions with the environment and other animals are similar to human - situations. Ex: a bunny rabbit and a deer chase each other around - they must be best friends! People forget that for wild animals, even suburban wild, is a constant struggle for survival. Humans partook in this once to, but now we have grocery stores and houses. We take for granted our ability to get food every day, and go home to a warm night’s rest. Animals don’t have that. Wild animals are focused 24/7 on survival - where to get food, are there any dangers around, ect. Once an animal has gained enough resources to survive day to day, then they can focus on reproduction. After that, in some cases, the focus is on rearing young. And then the cycle is repeated.
Tumblr media
The biggest argument comes down to the idea of death. Vegans argue that the act of killing animals is immortal because animals fear death just as humans do. This is true: the fear of death is present in all species. It is an important driver for evolution. Organisms are constantly coming up with new ways to avoid death caused by changes in the environment.
But death is still a really important thing.
Death is something that has to happen, because that is how nutrient cycling works. One organism collects material from the environment until it stops, and those nutrients are redistributed to other organisms. The longer an organism lives, the longer it holds onto those nutrients instead of redistributing them.
The argument that ‘all animals want to live’ is obvious and does not address the fact that death is a natural and important part of our world - just as important as life. Why do humans make such a big fuss about it? Because we have the time and the resources to do so.
Giraffes don’t have time to sit around and contemplate life and death - they’re busy living. They’re busy foraging and migrating and kicking lions in the head. We have to remember the human experience of the world is unique to us - we are the only species that exploited resources so efficiently, we had the time and energy to build Society. Every word and concept in our mind is a imaginary construct, or translated from what we’ve seen in nature. This includes death - a natural process we witness and created an abstract essence around that both increases and diminishes our fears of the inevitable. (Sorry to readers experiencing existential crisis’ - hang in there, take your time. This really is mind-bending stuff when you think about it). Death didn’t have a name until humans created one. We created stories of Grim Reapers and Angels and Demons. We see shadows out of the corner of our eyes and call them ghosts.
But, do we have a right to cause the death of other organisms? Well, in nature, what is a ‘right’? Does the gazelle or the leopard have a greater right to live? My arguments may see really heartless and objective, but I am a biology student, so I have to look at this from an ecological perspective. Why do we look at the animal world through a tight lens of human understanding when we now have to tools to see more? How can we assign human concepts to a world that exists beyond our understanding?
Tumblr media
One of emotions we have created do to the development of society is ‘guilt’. Its possible this emotion exists in other animals too, such as a mother who couldn’t protect their young. Guilt has evolutionary advantages of strengthening social bonds, and inciting a change of behavior. But humans are unique in that we extend this guilt beyond our immediate families to multiple other species. Pet owners may experience this when they accidentally step on their pet’s paw.
This philosophy of including other species in our perception of the world is amazing, and very important. Aldo Leopold, a professor of ecology at the University of Wisconsin, wrote in A Sand County Almanac that extending human ethics to the land and its animals was essential for conservation. We need more people involved in biology and environmentalism, but we need them to have a proper understanding of life and death processes of other animals.
Wild animals deal with death much more often than humans do, and not in the same way. An article from Stat News claims half of Americans now die at home in hospice care. I can’t hypothesize numbers, but its same to say that a lot of people, especially in rich countries, get a ‘gentle’ death - in bed, surrounded by family members, eased with pain medications. Animals don’t get that. The quickest, non - human way for animals to die is by being kill by something else. Lions tend to bite the jugular of prey to asphyxiate it. The animal is dead by the time the lions start eating it, but it did not die quickly and peacefully. It’s last moments were being chased by lions, having lions dig their claws and teeth into its body to knock it down. It will take at least a full minute or two to suffocate the animal before it dies. Imagine the last thing you see is a lion biting into your neck - that’s terrifying!
Some deaths are quicker - think of birds picking up ants or insects, quickly crushing them in their beats or swallowing them whole. The thing is, as mammals, we can’t really relate to insects on an emotional level, so that example doesn’t get us far...
Non-predatory causes of death are disease, parasites, starvation, injuries, and old age. Older animals are at risk for all of these combined. A wolf with a broken leg may be fed by the pack for a while, but eventually have to be left behind and starve to death. There are no gentle deaths in the animal kingdom.
Ironically, the fastest and least painful death animal can experience from humans are euthanasia, and a gunshot (as long as the shot is lethal). Euthanasia is common for pets and livestock by first putting them to sleep, and then injecting them with a lethal drug they cannot feel. Its the closest thing to a human dying in a hospital bed.
Gunshots have the potential to be the least painful and the most painful - depending on the skill of the hunter. A ethical shot to the heart or brain means that the animal will be dead before it even feels the bullet enter its body. That sounds a lot nicer than being chased or ripped apart by wolves, or stumbling around, infected by CWD.
Tumblr media
Shortcomings of Non-Vegan Philosophies
Hunters and anglers don’t have all fail-proof ideas either. When it comes to conservation, America tends to prioritize animals useful for human consumption - as in, harvesting or observing. “Game” animals, like deer, elk, grouse, and waterfowl, have most of the public’s attention and protection. “Non” game animals like reptiles, amphibians, and invertebrates, are overlooked and at greatest risk for extinction due to lack of funding.
Americans in general, eat too much meat. A quick Google search pulled up multiple articles that said the same thing. These articles are not pushing vegan/vegetarian philosophies, they are approaching the problem from a healthy diet standard. This article from Popular Science covers the American heritage around meat and animals that dates back to colonial times. In medieval Europe, many of the large game animals like stag and bison were gone due to overhunting, and the remaining wild lands were reversed for nobility sport hunting. Important predators like wolves and bear were also removed due to fears and superstition, so, the ecosystems of Europe were...a mess. When settlers came to America, they discovered a land of bounty, and developed a ‘take whatever you want’ philosophy that led to the extinction of the passenger pigeon, and near extinction of the bison and turkey. We eventually realized our mistake and worked up some protection, but still have a ways to go.
Tumblr media
Is Veganism helping conservation?
Yes and no. It has it strong and weak points. The strongest, like I said, being pointing out the flaws of factory farms. However, the belief that replacing animal products with plant/synthetic materials will help the planet is troublesome.
Tumblr media
The picture is one that comes up when Googling ‘soil degradation’. The land is so dry, it is cracked. The vegetation looks dead and dying, and the soil color itself is a light sandy brown - lacking the deeper shades that indicate the presence of organic material, essential for soil organisms and plant growth. Soil degradation is a problem all around the world, appearing in various forms. It’s leading cause is poor management of agricultural fields. A vegan lifestyle means greater dependence on these farms, but there is never any mention of this problem.
Vegan or not, as an American, I believe it is in our best interest to eat less meat - not totally get rid of it, but have more balanced diets. Soil degradation is a problem for everyone. Luckily, soil scientists are at work discovering new ways to put nutrients back into the soil and lock them in, increasing the health of the soil ecosystem. The plants and animals that depend on it (including us) will be healthier, and some of these techniques can even take greenhouse gasses out of the atmosphere. The Soil Conference at Gustavo's Adolphus College brought in some of these speakers. Video are available on YouTube, and posted to my blog.
Tumblr media
A trademark of veganism is refusing authentic leather. It is replaced by synthetic and plant based materials called ‘pleather’, ‘faux leather’ and ‘vegan leather’.
Some sites say these terms are interchangeable, but some say they’re each a little different. Leafy Souls defines ‘pleather’ as leather made from plastic. This is a big problem, because plastic materials, when washed, release micro plastics into waterways. The major problem is these plastics aren’t as easily identifiable are water bottles washed ashore on the beach. Not a lot is yet known about these pollutants, but we have found them everywhere - including inside our bodies.
Luckily, not all vegan leather products are made of plastics. Alternatives have been made from plants, leaves, cork, and even stone!
The big argument against leather and fur products is - it is cruel to kill animals just for there skins. And I actually agree with this. I was never one to buy into the fashion industry, and personally, I think it’s a little outdated, and pointless.
The process of factory made leather from cowhide is a bit disturbing. The manufacturing of leather is contributing so some major environmental issues like the release of greenhouse gasses and water pollution. Some questionable chemicals are also used to treat the leather.
The good news is livestock are not being killed solely for their skin. The cattle sent to slaughter are the same cattle that we get most commercial leather from. Of course, this doesn’t really comfort anyone heartbroken over the commercialized treatment of animals.
Leather manufacturing is also being linked to child labor and poor warehouse conditions. It’s a common American business practice to send labor production oversees to places labor is cheaper - cheaper because workers are paid less for longer hours in poor conditions. The leather industry is not alone in doing this. How we change this? Boy-coting certain products is one way, but some of these companies have monopolies on products. A book by a Michigan State University professor discusses the growing monopolization of food products.
How do we solve problems like this? I don’t know, but something this complex needs a just - as complex solution that may take years to undo.
Tumblr media
Fur
Minnesota got its early start as a center for fur-trading between Canadian pioneers and native tribes. Unfortunely, the luxury that was fur turned the market extremely competitive. Since nature is not built for capitalism and competitive markets and commercialism, the fur bearer populations of the state took a dive. (Luckily, all have now recovered).
Fur markets were as bad as market hunting in terms of conservation, but unlike the latter, fur trapping is as persistent as ever today. Thanks to protections and regulations, trapping is able to persist at nearly the same capacity as it was in the 1800′s without threatening a population. (Also, there are significantly less people partaking in trapping).
Personally, I do not care for killing animals solely for the fur or leather. I would prefer to trap animals that also provide food - like rabbits. My believes are that if you kill an animal, you use as much as you can from it - meat, skin, and maybe even some of the bones. Its a way to pay respect by making sure the animal didn’t die for no reason.
Like leather, fur has synthetic replacements. However, I could not find as much environmental information. The main material for faux fur is acrylics, which are basically plastics that do not degrade when released into the environment. It is another source of micro plastics.
Manufactured fur, like real leather, is treated with chemicals like formaldehyde to keep from degrading. Naturally, after discovering this, I Googled health affects of wearing real fur. Problem 1: I couldn’t find a trustworthy website. The websites that came up were strongly anti-fur. I wanted to find information from a neutral website, like a college university article. Problem 2: I could not find anything. I expected to find articles about odd rashes or allergic reactions, but there was non. Instead, I re-discovered an article I used in a previous post about vaccines. Vaccines actually use doses of formaldehyde in them. It’s a scary substance, because we automatically think about it in the process of embalming bodies, but the truth is, it has many practical uses that are safe to human health. Any substance can be harmful or helpful, it all depends on the dosage and chemical makeup. I was reminded that formaldehyde isn’t as scary as everyone makes it out to be. It is actually naturally produced in our bodies, and it probably doesn’t have any adverse effects to being added on our clothes.
Another problem arises when questioning the affects of formaldehyde in the environment. When we wash our clothes, dirt and chemicals end up in our water systems, including micro plastics and formaldehyde. The usual dosages of the chemical is to small to cause us individuals adverse health affects, but the story can change when dumped in large qualities. Our tendency to dump large amounts of waste into confined areas is not natural - animals tend to discharge (biodegradable) waste evenly across a habitat, or at least in quantities than can be broken down. The way humans discard waste in large quantities means that basically anything - including caffeine from our coffee consumption - can have adverse environmental effects. So, the problem of releasing formaldehyde is not on the chemical itself, but more on our system of waste treatment and pollution in general.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
I am overwhelmingly tired of the vegan vs non-vegan argument. The more I see people pointing their fingers at each other, the less I want to partake in either one of their ideologies. Great minds think alike but fools seldom differ.
I believe it all comes down to balance. No matter how we exploit resources, there is going to be a downside. Vegan or non-vegan, there is an up and down to every choice. We have to work together and find a middle ground.
If we completely stopped using animals today, there would be changes. CO2 emissions would drop a little, but they may change sources. The same amount of people would need the same amount of food, and 1/3 of that food would come from a different source. There may be more habitat loss from increases agriculture farms, and come communities may became protein-deficient.
If the opposite were to happen, and we increases animal products, there would also be adverse effects. To feed those animals would also require more agricultural land. Factory emissions could rise, along with health effects of too much red meat, like increased cholesterol.
The fact of the matter is, we all kill animals, directly and indirectly, simply by taking up space. The things that make you you - the proteins and carbons and lipids and nutrients - came from another organism. The fact that you have them now means something else is denied them. The cars we drive, the fields we plow, the pollutants we throw out, those are all killing animals as I type this. It sucks. I absolutely hate it. It has happened for the past millions of years, but right now, we are doing it at a faster rate than anything before us.
I cannot fully support veganism in regards to animal ethics, due to the tendency of anthropomorphization and biological misinformation. But I due support the legitimate environmental concerns, and I think a lot more people need to understand them as well.

What Lauren Conrad Can’t Live Without
Tumblr media
If you’re like us, you’ve probably wondered what famous people add to their carts. Not the JAR brooch and Louis XV chair but the hairspray and the electric toothbrush. We asked Lauren Conrad — whose brand, Lauren Conrad Beauty, launched this fall and just expanded to skin care — about the coffee maker, hair clip, and wine she can’t live without.

Kristin Ess Full Size French Pin Set $12
I’ve worked with Kristin since I was 20 — she’s amazing and her whole line is literally the only thing I use on my hair: her shampoo, conditioner, stylers, everything. My hair is pretty thick. After my first pregnancy, it all fell out. I’ve been able to hang on to a lot of it this time around, but it still has changed a lot. Kristin explained to me that the texture of your hair changes every seven years and it changes during pregnancy. So mine has become a bit thicker — I have a lot more hair than I did before — with more of a natural wave to it. I recently grew it long enough to really do a top knot again, and this French pin makes that so easy. It doesn’t cause breakage like an elastic can. I use it every single day. Even if I’m not wearing my hair up, when I get home at the end of a day, I twist it up when I walk in the door because I live with a one-year-old hair puller. I don’t even look in a mirror to do it.

Kinto 4 Cup Brewer Stand Set $188
The first thing I do every morning is make coffee at around 6:30. Years ago I had a Keurig in my kitchen, and when one of my husband’s best friends stayed with us, he very kindly said to me, “If I sent you more ecofriendly ideas for coffee, would you be open to them?” He got me thinking. The next weekend we were going up the coast for a wedding and we stopped in this small boutique, where I saw this little coffee maker. I was like, “Oh, this is so beautiful.” It doesn’t require anything, including filters. I got it and have used it ever since. There’s a whole process to it: I grind my own coffee, and in order to use this, you need a more coarsely ground coffee. Then I pour a bit of boiling water over it, let the coffee bloom for a minute, then pour the rest in and watch it make my coffee. It’s definitely more involved than a regular coffee maker or a Keurig, but I actually think it makes a nicer cup. It looks better on your counter, too, and best of all, it’s a little nicer to the Earth. Mine has held up for a few years. We did have to replace one piece because my husband dropped it while washing it, but other than that, it has really lasted.

Kirkland Signature Organic Virgin Coconut Oil $16
I love this one from Costco because it’s a really good value. I do use it to cook, but I mainly use it for baths. At the end of the day, after we put the boys down, I try to take a 20-minute bath. It’s my end-of-the-day thing — I usually have a glass of wine in there, too. And I always put a bit of coconut oil in the bath while it’s running. The last thing I want to do is apply moisturizer after a bath because I’m so relaxed and tired, so putting coconut oil in there keeps my skin nice and hydrated.

Health-Ade Pink Lady Apple Kombucha (6-Pack) $30
Instead of having a coffee in the afternoon, I’ve switched to having kombucha. It’s better for digestion and whatnot. I have a fridge stocked with kombucha, that’s how much I drink it. I treat kombucha almost like I would beer — I have my go-tos, but I like trying different ones, and I always come back to my favorites. This is one of them. I found it at my local grocery store. It’s sort of a middle-of-the-road one in terms of sweetness, for when I don’t want anything too sugary. It’s tasty. If I don’t want to try something new, I go for this because I know I’ll enjoy it.

Philips Avance XL Air Fryer $300
I mainly use it to reheat things. For example, if I’m making a batch of waffles, I’ll freeze the extras, then pop one in when I want it. The air fryer defrosts and crisps it up. It also brings leftover fries back to life, which is honestly enough of a reason to own one. This model is the newer version of mine, because when I went to look up mine, I only found used ones on eBay. I guess I’ve really had it for a minute. But mine is still working well, I don’t have a reason to replace it. I got it about two years ago when I was pregnant. Some woman at a talk about how to healthily feed small children said we all needed to get an air fryer because it makes things so easy. Recently I did a Zoom wine date with one of my good friends and she texted me that she was running late; she was like, “I just finally unwrapped my air fryer from Christmas.” I responded with a short novel about my air fryer, outlining everything she needs to do and try. I’m obsessed with it.

Sweet Laurel: Recipes for Whole Food, Grain-Free Desserts $28 now 25% off $21
Our whole family is dairy-free. We have been for years. My oldest son is actually lactose-intolerant, but we’ve all struggled with dairy, so we just cut it out of our diet. Cutting out dairy is pretty easy, but it becomes a challenge with baking. Sweet Laurel’s recipes are all dairy-free; she’s also grain-free, so it’s all almond flour. The main ingredients she uses are almond flour, maple syrup, and Himalayan salt. All of her recipes are really easy, too — I pull out cookbooks for dessert a lot, but sometimes recipes have so many steps that I get overwhelmed. The last thing I made from here was a strawberry cake for my son’s birthday. I handed him the book, told him to pick what he wanted, and he chose that. It was dyed pink with beets. You don’t taste them, they just made the whole cake pink.

Juice Beauty Green Apple Peel Full Strength Exfoliating Mask $48
I love a mask that gives me instant results. I don’t have very sensitive skin, but when I take this off, my face is bright red. It does burn a little, but I don’t mind. I really feel like it’s working. I only use it once a week — I do it at night and the next morning I wake up and my skin feels great. It’s a nice refresher and takes away that dull feeling I can get. I’m trying to do as much as I can at home — I haven’t been able to get facials or see any specialist — and this is the closest I’ve gotten so far to instant results.

Eden Brothers Organic Roma Tomato Seeds $4
We started gardening this year as a way to pass the time. I’ve gotten really into it. I mean, it’s definitely taking over our yard, which is pretty small, but it’s really fun and strangely rewarding. When I went to buy seeds, Eden Brothers had the best selection. We’re growing green beans, tomatillos, raspberries, blackberries, onions, lots of tomatoes — cherry, heirloom, and Roma tomatoes — corn, and pumpkins. Oh, and lots of herbs and stuff, too. We harvested our first corn not long ago. It was weird. The flavor was good, but I don’t know, I’m still learning. I think it maybe was overwatered. I thought gardening would be simple — it’s not, but it has been a really fun hobby. I’m sure I’ll get better with time. My 3-year-old son goes out with me every morning to check the garden. He’s way more inclined to eat something off the vine than he is off a dinner plate. And I love that he gets to see where food comes from at a young age.

Avaline White Blend $20
When I heard about this wine, I was really curious. Katherine Power, one of the founders, is always coming out with different brands and she always does such a nice job with her launches. I don’t like when wine is too sweet or fruity, and I prefer organic wine — if it isn’t organic, I tend to get a headache. This one tastes amazing and has beautiful packaging. I like their white wine best; I actually just ordered a whole case.

Lauren Conrad Beauty The Lip & Cheek Tint $20
My first pregnancy, which was four years ago, was honestly the first time when I was aware of what I was putting on my body and the effects those products could have. I transitioned all my products to clean and vegan, but I hated feeling like I had to compromise — I wanted clean lipsticks with staying power that had really great pigment and felt good. One of the reasons why I came out with my brand now, as opposed to a few years ago, is because I decided if I’m going to do a beauty line, I want to do it correctly. Everyone involved with my line really stays informed on ingredients and the market, so we can create products you can feel good about using. A multitasker is our target customer because I’m one myself. This tint is one of my favorite products for that reason. I use it every day throughout the day. It’s something you can apply to a bare base, you can layer it over light makeup and build it up. It’s about whatever works for you.

Key to Optimal Health
Optimal health means more than the absence of pain, sickness and disease. As important as it is to be physical healthy it is equally important to be mentally, emotionally and spiritually healthy as well. Optimal health, therefore, in context of what is being written here, is a balance of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of health. Let us take a look at each of these aspects, beginning with physical health.
Physical Health
So much has been written about the subject of physical health in the categories of health and wellness, diet and weight loss, fitness and bodybuilding etc. In this article I will primarily deal with physical health in its internal aspect which includes building a healthy immune system, detoxifying the body, healthy and quick elimination, and nourishing the cells with proper nutrition. Aging itself can be slowed down by keeping the internal aspect of our physical health up to par. Wouldn't you love to have a healthy, youthful, energetic, strong, lean body which is free of disease, sickness and pain well into adulthood beyond the age of 40? It all narrows down to what type of food we put into our bodies - either food filled with toxins and poisons, or healthy, living, vital food.
Mark and Patti Virkler, in their inspiring book "Eden's Health Plan - Go Natural" write:
"Food is intended to furnish the body with all the live elements needed for the regeneration of its cells and tissues. If the body fails to be healthy, the lack or deficiency of regenerative elements in the food is the cause of, and the responsibility for, whatever ailment, sickness or disease overtakes it. Our bodies seek homeostasis, equilibrium, balance. This equals health. When given the right building blocks to work with, the body maintains itself in health."
These building blocks can be found in whole, unbleached, organic grains, rice (wild rice, brown rice etc.), beans, fruits, vegetables, nuts, various seeds and herbs etc. Large portions of these building blocks can be found in the "super-food" family in such foods as Spirulina and Barley Grass. (A super-food is extremely rich in a large variety of vitamins, minerals, trace minerals and amino acids, and can be assimilated by our bodies very easily. Spirulina is a complete protein and is known to be very healthy.) Look in your local health food store for super green foods in powdered form. I personally sometimes use Garden of Life Perfect Food Super Green Formula.
Super-foods are known to:
Deter Aging
Massively Boost Your Immune System
Aid Weight Loss
Lower Your Cholesterol
Radically Improve Your Energy
Enhance Your Mental & Emotional Well-being
Boost Your Libido
Alkalize Your System
Protect against Toxins and Pollutants
Beautify Your Skin
Cleanse and Fortify Your Blood
Nourish and Revitalize your Systems
Fight and Protect against numerous diseases including Diabetes, Hypertension, Heart Disease, Stroke, Cancer, Arthritis, Cataracts, Osteoporosis, Acne, Obesity, High cholesterol, Age-Related Blindness...And Much More!
Again I quote Mark and Patti Virkler:
"By taking just a bit of a super-food (in capsule or powered drink form) as a supplement to your diet, you will find many wonderful things happen to your body. Essentially, the nourishment will give your body the needed resources to rebuild any broken or damaged parts and improve your body's chances of returning to homeostasis. Testimonies of its power range from improved eyesight, to relief from back pain, to better scores in sports by world champion competitive athletes. Generally, one will experience feelings of increased energy and vitality; reduction and alleviation of stress, anxiety and depression; relief from the discomforting symptoms of fatigue, hypoglycemia, some allergies, poor digestion and sluggishness; and improved memory and mental clarity. People also experience elimination of mood swings, toxin elimination, better sleep, reduced cravings for food and sweets, lower blood pressure and many other health benefits. Then there are many specialized health problems which have disappeared as people's bodies receive adequate nutrition through super-foods. Prostate problems have been normalized, as well as triglycerides, arthritis and diabetes, and many other severe and degenerative diseases. Basically, any and every disease will be fought off by your body, if it has the right tools to fight with. Super-foods give it the right tools. You just need to try it for thirty days and see what it may do for you. I recommend taking a product that includes several kinds of super foods, as they work together in a synergy that can have a profound effect on your health and vitality. If your body needs detoxifying first, you may experience a bit of a "tissue cleansing" during the first few days or weeks of taking the super-food as your body cleanses itself."
Basically if we put the wrong food (and drink) into our body it weakens the immune system and opens the door for us to be susceptible to health problems of whatever sort (whether it be frequents colds and sicknesses, flues, aches and pains, sores and ulcers, weakness, sluggishness, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis, heart problems, diabetes, cancer or psychological disorders such as malaise, apathy or memory problems etc., etc., etc.) Looking on the bright side a healthy immune system that is not swamped with toxins can fight off diseases successfully!
It is preferable to never be unhealthy to begin with and to eat nothing but healthy food from day one. Unfortunately it is not this way. Many have been conditioned to eat unhealthy, fattening, artery clogging foods from childhood to the grave. Many of us think it is a normal part of the aging process to start getting weaker, fatter, having more pain etc. after age 30 and onward. In many cases (definitely not all) premature aging and bodily weakening is the result of years of poor eating habits from childhood to adulthood. Due to many years of wrong eating habits it may be best to detoxify.
In the process of nourishing our cells with foods high in fiber such as vegetables, fruits, super-foods, and whole grains our body naturally detoxifies itself in the process, which in turn strengthens our immune system and slows, or in some cases, reverses the aging process. The key to optimal health as far as the physical aspect of our health goes, is to:
Eat plenty of Grains, vegetables, fruits, nuts, super-foods, herbs, being sure to get plenty of exercise, pure water and clean air, excreting waste from the intestines quickly (which is a byproduct of eating plenty of fruits, fiber and vegetables). There are also natural supplements you can take such as Vitamin C, vitamins and minerals, and various antioxidants unless you are getting plenty of these from your regular diet.
I left out other important factors which contribute to overall optimal health. They included, but are not limited to, being healed of emotional traumas, maintaining a calm mental attitude, living in a spirit of prayer, faith, hope and love towards others in general, and towards God, Spirit, Higher Power in particular.
Next, I hope to share a little about the three remaining categories of health - mental, emotional and spiritual.
Mental and Emotional Health
Mental and emotional health are so closely related it is hard to separate the two. Having a healthy mind is not limited to having a keen intellect and an excellent memory. Someone can excel at this level of mental health but still be an emotional wreck, not to mention being spiritually ignorant at the same time.
Negative mental attitudes or emotions can have a direct effect on our physical health even if we are eating healthy food. Emotional traumas, anger, rage, hate, stress etc., when persisted in day in and day out, weaken the immune system and manifest in ill physical health. A negative mind, over time, often erases all the good that healthy food does for us.
Some forms of sickness, disease, and illness, as well as bad habits like smoking, drinking, drugs etc., are often external symptoms of something deeper. They are effects of a deeper cause. And until that cause is addressed and healed the symptoms will keep coming back like fruit on a tree whether in the form of ill health, disease, anxiety, bad habits of one sort or another, or in the worse case scenario cancer. Luckily there are warning signs when all is not well within.
The subconscious part of our mind is the storehouse of our emotions and memories and it is here where we need healing as far as our mental and emotional life are concerned. Sometimes negative or uneasy dreams (some of which originate from the sub conscious) are manifestations of our own fears and internal wounds. Some dreams are also messages, clothed with images we can comprehend, from our highest level of mind - the super conscious level - warning us when we are making wrong decisions, or heading in a wrong direction. In those rare cases where we are susceptible to the healing energies of the super conscious level of mind we can experience internal healing quicker than we ever imagined. More about this in a minute when I get to the spiritual aspect of health.
Along with a healthy diet it is important to think positive thoughts and maintain a positive attitude, avoiding anger and bitterness towards others. But, thinking positive thoughts and making an effort to be happy, loving, and optimistic, are only part of what is involved when it comes to the healing of our emotional life. We can only go so far by exercising will power alone, as important as it is to use our own efforts when attempting to make a change in our emotional life for the better. All our ethical standards, our rules and regulations for leading an acceptable moral life, all our positive thinking formula are a means to an end, the end being the opening and revelation of the spiritual aspect or our mind - the super conscious level of mind. This brings me to the last category of health, the spiritual category.
Spiritual Health
I have written about this subject elsewhere and will be repeating some of the information here. Keep in mind when reading this that being spiritual is not to be confused with being religious. Someone who is religious can be operating from a physical, emotional, and mental level only, but be void as far as being spiritual goes. A pseudo religious life (not to be confused with a genuine religious life) that is lived in pride, elitism, self righteousness and egoism is completely opposite of spiritual life. In context of this article being spiritual means living your life from the level of your super conscious mind, and living a harmonious life naturally from that level. This is easier said than done because our pride and ego often get in the way and cause us untold pain and suffering. But by living in harmony with the super-conscious level of our mind, and accessing the spiritual grace and energy which flow through (from God and Spirit) that same level of mind, our mental and emotional health, as well as our physical health, all fall into place and are balanced.
All our moral, ethical, religious or merely human efforts at trying to be a more loving, positive, optimistic person are a feeble way of (often unconsciously) aligning, or attempting to align, ourselves with that ever present flow of energy, light, grace, and Spirit permeating throughout all creation.
This ever present, but often unperceived and untapped, spiritual energy upholding all creation is the source of a truly happy life even when we find ourselves in the midst of negative external circumstances. It is the ultimate key to optimal health. Some call this ever present energy cosmic consciousness, super-consciousness, Christ consciousness, God, Spirit, a Higher Power etc. Some people personalize it and clothe it with a human form and then worship the person it manifests through. Ancient writings say the heavens and earth were made by the word of God and by the breath of his mouth. This is a human way of trying to accommodate a spiritual truth to the limited understanding of the human brain, using analogies, parables, particular genders, and concepts that can be understood by the rational brain. This often results in misunderstandings and even war and bloodshed in the name of religion.
The naked truth is intuitively perceived by the higher aspect of human consciousness called super consciousness. And it is this level of consciousness (Christ consciousness) that wells up from within to "save," change, deliver, and heal us when the thick layer of ego, all the emotional blockages, wounded memories, and wrong thinking, are thinned out enough by our own efforts at self improvement. This is the truth of the "Messiah" or Savior figure often mentioned in ancient writings. Eventually we have to let go of our own strivings and let God take over.
Or, we can continue to resist the inner pull and instead live an unnatural life with the end result of disharmony on all levels physical, mental and emotional. (This is the truth about the so called wrath of God. It has nothing to do God or Spirit being angry at us. But it has everything to do with us bringing suffering upon ourselves by choosing to go our own way, not heeding the whispers and impressions of the super conscious mind either within ourselves, or speaking through dreams, visions, other people, or even through writing, art, and so on.)
Once we tap into the spiritual flow of grace then a truly changed person is the result, from the inside out. Children are closer to this level of being than adults who have been conditioned and brainwashed throughout life via peer pressure, upbringing, culture and so on. Humility is key, not pride and ego. Attaining to the spiritual level of healing consciousness is the end of all religions.
Conclusion
When we are physically, emotionally and mentally healthy in the true sense of the word we are spiritually in tune with the highest level of our consciousness - the super consciousness - so that there is a steady flow of life and energy from that level of consciousness flowing into us as we allow it to flow through us cleansing and vivifying us. This even reaches to ones decisions on what to eat, motivating one to exercise and to joyfully do what is best for the body, to forgive others. By choice we finally willfully chose to move in a joyous harmony with the impressions, counsel, advice and wisdom forever emanating from the inherent harmony within the spiritual energy upholding all creation. The ego fears this and sees it as death to its pride and rebellion. This is the truth behind the often repeated idea of dying on the cross, worshipping God, obeying God etc. There is no true God who has an ego so inflated that he demands worship on pain of sickness and death if he is not worshipped. Instead, for our own sakes, the ever present holy Spirit encourages us (without interfering with our freedom of choice) to choose to move in the flow and harmony of the ever present spiritual energy upholding all creation so we can experience the true key to optimal health, and lasting harmony even after our brief stay in this world is over, and our temporal physical shell is dissolved into nothingness. The end result is a truly healthy and whole person.
The Buddha tapped into this source. Lao Tsu, in words and language accommodated to the understanding of people in his day and age, wrote about this in the Tao Te Ching. In the Christian religion Jesus was the personification of this spiritual grace, energy, Spirit, the eternal Tao, which many call God, or the Power and Word of God. The esoteric or mystical side of all religions emphasize this same point in so many different words. Some have experienced glimpses of this level of consciousness and try to share what they perceive through writing, some paint, some sing, and some dance etc. Everyone has their own unique way to bring that light and love to the world which they sense in the silence and stillness when the emotions, reasoning and physical body are calm and collected. Yoga and meditation in particular teach someone how to get in touch with the highest aspect of their being.

If you’ve caught the gardening bug in the last year, you know you can never have too many plants! From annuals and perennials to flowering shrubs and small trees, it’s easy to fall in love with new plants to add to your garden. But if you live in a cold climate—or if you want to start seedlings for a vegetable or flower garden early to get a jumpstart on spring—you need a greenhouse. You’ll be able to save some of your favorite plants for the next season, as well as shelter tender plants or seedlings until you can set them out in the spring. Even if you don’t have tons of space, there are greenhouses that will fit tidily up against your house or on your patio or deck. Another option is a cold frame, which generally is lower to the ground but also warms up the soil and allows you to plant sooner in the spring. Just remember that many budget-priced options are not meant to be permanent so they won’t stand up to wind or heavy snow.

(Green) thumbs up! Gardening’s growth fuelled by pandemic-driven need to connect with nature
Tumblr media
youtube
As the days grow longer, the signs of the growing interest in gardening are everywhere in Metro Vancouver.
Local garden stores such as GardenWorks are already trying to keep up with the early demand for seeds and the arrival of scores of first-time gardeners. So far, this spring looks to be even busier than last year.
More people than ever before are looking to connect with nature by growing something whatever way they can.
Lynda Pasacreta, president of the Richmond Garden Club , has seen the growing interest in gardening in the growth in volunteers in Paulik Neighbourhood Park , located in Richmond’s city centre area.
Right after the start of last year’s provincial health emergency, people started strolling through the park’s 30-plus raised flower beds and mature stands of Western Cedar, Sitka spruce and Douglas fir.
Before the pandemic, the garden club struggled to get 10 volunteers to help with the raised beds in the 0.6-hectare (1.5-acre) garden. Now, the club has more 30 volunteers smitten with the gardening bug.
“These are very passionate people who have never gardened before in their life,” Pasacreta said.
In a recent presentation to the Canadian Federation of University Women about connecting to nature, Pasacreta talked about the growing body of research about the beneficial effects of being outdoors in a natural setting.
People who practise what the Japanese call shinrin-yoku or forest bathing breathe in naturally occurring, beneficial aerosols called terpenes that are produced by trees as well as fruits, vegetables and flowers.
“If you’re feeling scared about the pandemic, frightened and out of control, go and stand in the forest for at least two hours a week,” she said.
“People are finding it is a great way to get out of feeling restricted, of feeling like you’re in jail or you can’t do things.”
Tumblr media
At GardenWorks , president Leanne Johnson said the level of interest in gardening is nothing less than “astonishing.” Last year, the pandemic convinced many people, including young families, to try gardening for the first time. Others have returned to the pastime after a long absence.
“We saw a huge uptake last spring starting at the end of March and into April. We wondered: ‘Would that continue this spring? Will people have grown tired?’ ” she said.
The interest, Johnson said, is even greater this spring.
“Our garden centres are going full out right now,” she said. “It’s unbelievable.”
Like last year, there’s a huge demand for seeds for growing food and for berries that can be grown in containers.
“People are starting to grow their own food and getting to know their neighbours again because they have to give away so many zucchinis,” she said.
The interest from first-time gardeners has led to a change in marketing at GardenWorks’ eight locations in B.C. Rather than focusing on what plants are on sale, the company is moving towards becoming garden coaches for customers.
“What do people need the most? They need help with being successful,” Johnson said.
“If they’re successful with a veggie garden or creating a beautiful peaceful Eden for themselves, then that interest in gardening will continue.”
In East Vancouver on Victoria Drive, Figaro’s Garden manager Conor Preston said there’s definitely a continuing interest in sustainable gardening and in permaculture based on the idea of creating a healthy ecosystem that balances itself.
“One of the classics is often called the ‘three sisters’: Corn, beans and squash,” he said, referring to a traditional combination used by many Indigenous nations in North America.
The beans grow up the scaffolding of the corn, the squash along the ground to create shade and prevent evaporation. The beans also provide nitrogen, one of the most important nutrients for corn.
There is also continuing demand for indoor plants that builds on a trend that had been occurring for about five years.
A variegated monstera deliciosa , for example, used to sell for $30 to $50. Now they’re $300 to $500, if you can find one.
Preston has noticed that his relationship with customers has changed.
“The customer is always right, of course. That still exists,” he said.
“But I sort of feel if someone asks you how you’re doing, you have more room to say, ‘Oh you know I am a little stressed.’ I feel you can have more honest interaction with customers.”
Tumblr media
‘Smart gardens’ let you grow food in small spaces
A Vancouver company is making a smart garden that allows anyone living in an apartment or condo to grow their own food.
It’s called AVA Byte and is small enough to fit on a shelf at home.
AVA Byte scales down technology borrowed from the cannabis industry, said Valerie Song, co-founder and CEO.
“A lot of times people are getting basil plants from grocery stories and within a few days or a week or so it starts to wither away,” Song said.
“We thought there should be a better solution to keep plants alive.”
AVA is short for Automated Vertical Agriculture. Plants start in various pre-seeded packs that include four different types of basil, five mixed salad greens or five Asian herbs. Water and LED lighting are administered by software monitored by five sensors and a camera.
AVA Byte is designed and made in B.C. and sells for $499.
During the pandemic, an estimated one in five people started growing food for the first time. It often didn’t work because first-time home farmers didn’t have all the information they needed to succeed, Song said.
But AVA Byte, Song said, can connect via the Internet to the company’s customer service centre to help gardeners with any issues not covered by the app, pruning tips and educational material.
Smart gardens such as AVA Byte have catapulted into public awareness, she said, because of concerns over food security and changing consumer habits.
“When the pandemic first hit, our website saw 3,000 per cent increase in organic traffic,” Song said.
“This type of technology can really help to change what gardening is in the future.”

Love Grows in a Garden
“The beauty of the season will grow wherever seeds of love are planted. “ ~ Euripides
February derives from the Latin word februa, which means “to cleanse”. The Romans fêted Februalia, a month-long purification and atonement festival, annually occurring during the wettest and dreariest of days of the year. In California, February opens the floodgates of rain with weather that is overcast and cold. Thankfully, not everything is dreary and gray. We attribute love to February with the celebration of Valentine’s Day and what better place to savor the “amour” than in the garden?
Take a walk in a garden where natural aromatherapy originated. Feel the spongy softness of cool moss as you step off the stone path. Admire the cymbidium orchids beginning to bloom. Sink your nose into a patch of narcissi or heavenly gardenias, inhaling the intoxicating perfumes. Cut a few stems of Angel Face roses with their heady musky scent to give to your partner or friend. If you are stressed at work, a visit to the intensely fragrant flowers of jasmine will instantly settle your nerves. Is indigestion bothering you after meals? Munch on peppermint leaves with your lunch. Do your children need to focus more on homework? Make a sachet of grapefruit peels, eucalyptus leaves, and rosemary sprigs to promote concentration. Are you having trouble sleeping at night? Pick a stem of fresh lavender, roll the leaves and flowers between your palms, and breathe in the vapors. All of these delightful therapies are available in the February landscape.
One of the season’s wondrous luscious gifts is the orange. Its folk name is “love fruit” because the orange is sweet and sensuous. The orange warms your heart, restores your sense of humor, bringing out your brighter personality. When you need a boost of confidence before an interview, presentation, or audition, smell the peels from any citrus, especially orange or lemon. If you are feeling depressed or sad, inhaling the peels works as a mood-elevator to restore a sunny disposition. Despite the dismal weather, every time I hike up my hill to pick a radiant navel, I am renewed and refreshed with the sweet and tangy juices. Oranges offer a concentrated Vitamin C shower that pollinates a dampened spirit. Oranges and tangerines are my elixirs. I cook with them, use the leaves, rinds, and piths in teas as well as the flowers in salads. I create love sachets and toss the peels in my bathwater when my muscles are aching after a hard day’s work.
Since we have more time to dream indoors about gardening in February than actually going outside, this is a perfect month to do like the Romans: clear the clutter, cleanse your body, mind, and soul, and tidy your garden in anticipation of spring. Peruse garden books and catalogs. Make a list of what you want to sow for your family’s enjoyment. When you start growing fresh healthy food, you’ll be showing your heart some love while saving trips to the grocery store. February is Heart Health Month, so experience increased vitamins, flavor, and color while munching from your private Garden of Eden.
Life and love began in a garden. Love is not only in the air. Love is growing in your backyard. Discover the benefits of your personalized, organic Love Potion #9 and be blessed with the beauty and seeds of this season.
May cupid’s arrow remain in your heart all year and fill your days and nights with passion. Happy Valentine’s Day!

Three Leaf Clover
Some folk traditions assign a different attribute to each leaf of a clover. The three leaf clover represents the Holy Trinity ~ Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Alternatively, it represents the Maiden, Mother, and Crone.
The three leafed clover is often used in rituals designed to protect or to keep one looking youthful and fair. As a protection carry one on your person.
To keep looking young, gather dew on May Day morning, just before the Sun rises. Put into  this water three clover stalks. Let these steep all day out of the Sun’s rays. The next morning, again before the sun rises, rub a little of the water on your face. Do this every morning until the water is used up. Cover the bowl with a cloth to keep the water clean and store in a place where it will remain untouched until the following morning.
Early Christian proselytisers, such as St. Patrick, used both the shamrock and the clover to demonstrate the three-in-one notion of the trinity ( father, son, and holy spirit). It is also said that snakes will not venture where clover grows, which ties into the idea of St Patrick and his reputation for driving the snakes out of Ireland.
That said, the Irish had imbued the shamrock with meaning before St. Patrick came along. Three-leaf clovers featured prominently in ancient Celtic rituals and folklore (triads and the number three were considered spiritually significant back then, too).
With its three leaves, Clover is a very shamanic plant allowing one to see into and interact with the Other world. It is a good talisman of protection and power for travelling out of body and walking between worlds. Never underestimate the magical power of this simple and harmless weed. It also makes a good offering to Mercurial deities and can be burned with incense, added to ritual smoking blend, made into alcoholic brews, or left with a food offering.

Four Leaf Clover
Although all clover has the same magickal properties, it is the rare four leafed kind that is especially powerful. Such a plant, when found, enabled the finder to see fairies, detect witches, and recognize evil spirits. Anyone wearing a four-branched leaf was safe from malicious enchantments and one hidden in the dairy, or barn prevented witches from harming the milk supply or the butter.
If a girl wore a four leaf clover in her right shoe, the first unmarried man she met on her first journey with it would be her future husband, or if not he, then another man of the same name. Another method is to pin the four leaf clover above the front door of her home. Again, the first unmarried man who walks through her door will become her husband.
There is a story in the Denham Tracts of a Northumberland girl who, when returning from milking, saw fairies dancing in the field. No one else could see them, though she pointed them out. She was not normally second-sighted, and it was afterwards discovered that the source of her vision lay in the circular pad she wore on her head to support the milk pail. Among the grasses with which it was stuffed was a four leaf clover.

Four leafed clovers are genetic mutations of the three leafed varieties, and well-known European – American charms, bringing in (and representing) health, wealth, love and luck, and protecting from witchcraft. An old rhyme is as follows:
One leaf for fame, One leaf for wealth, And one for a faithful lover, And one leaf to bring you glorious health, Are all in the four leaf clover.
The luckiest four leaf clover is one you find when you are not looking for one. The four leaf clover carries all the symbolism of the number 4.
Some people press four leafed clovers in a book, such as the Bible, and keep them in the house. Others carry a dried and flattened four leafed clover in their wallet, to draw money, even going so far as to laminate them to card-stock to preserve them. Jewellers make effigies of them, working these into key chain fobs, brooches, pendants, and rings.
An old legend says that when Adam and Eve were expelled from the Garden of Eden, Eve took a four leaf clover with her to remind her of the happiness she had enjoyed there. Consequently finding a four leaf clover became a sign of good luck and happiness. Anyone lucky enough to be in possession of a four leaf clover has a piece of the blessed Paradise

In the seventeenth century, four leaf clovers were sometimes strewn in the path of a bride to provide her with extra protection from evil spirits on her special day.
Four leaf clovers are carried to prevent madness. It is also a popular amulet to avoid military service. Gather the four leaf clovers in the morning, then walk to the nearest hill. As the Sun rises throw one clover to the North, and one to each of the other directions, calling upon the powers of the Elements to protect you, to keep you from getting drafted or whatever your wish is. Then, after finishing the ritual, pluck one more four leaf clover (remember, leave something in payment to the earth for the plant taken) and keep it as a magickal link with the elements.
They are also a frequent image on good luck tokens and they appear on greeting cards and postcards conveying good wishes to the recipient. Some say that four-leaf clovers grant the power to see fairies. In other traditions it is said that they are related to St. Patrick’s use of the shamrock to explain Christianity to the Irish, the cross of Jesus being made up of 4 parts.

The earliest mention of “Fower-leafed or purple grasse” is from 1640 and simply says that it was kept in gardens because it was “good for the purples in children or others.” John Melton, an English writer wrote the following in 1620 about the clover:
“That if any man walking in the fields, find any foure-leaved grasse, he shall in a small while after find some good thing.”
A description from 1869 says that four-leaf clovers were “gathered at night-time during the full moon by sorceresses, who mixed it with vervain and other ingredients, while young girls in search of a token of perfect happiness made quest of the plant by day.” The first reference to luck might be from an 11-year-old girl, who wrote in an 1877 letter to St. Nicholas Magazine, “Did the fairies ever whisper in your ear, that a four-leaf clover brought good luck to the finder?”
