Whitlocks Mill Light, St. Croix River, Calais, Maine. The state's northernmost lighthouse is Whitlocks Mill. It was built in 1901, to replace the lantern hung on a tree that was used to guide mariners entering the St. Croix River. In 1949 Keeper Jasper Cheney was transferred from remote Libby Island Light to Whitlocks Mill. This made it much easier for his family to visit. They planted flowers and decorated the station and grounds for visitors to enjoy. Today it's privately owned, and is best seen from the water.

Random steps. These steps are well proportioned, being neither too long nor too steep. The textured surface, retained by timber verticals, makes them safe in all weathers and additionally the flight is lit for night use. Vertical plant forms have been chosen to complement the horizontal lines of the steps.
