The History of Korean Male Soloists from the 20th Century: Episode 2/?

The second episode of 'The History of Korean Male Soloists from the 20th Century' focuses on notable Korean artists who gained recognition in the early 20th century, a time marked by Japanese occupation.

The documentation surrounding these artists is often inconsistent, primarily because their activities took place nearly a century ago, prior to the Korean War, which resulted in the loss or inaccessibility of historical records.

Lee Eun Sang (이은상; 李殷相)

Lee Eun-sang was initially referenced in Part 3 of 'The History of Korean Male Groups' for his contribution as a lyricist for the "Boat Song," which was performed by the Yonhui College Choir and composed by Hyun Je-myeong (현제명; 玄濟明). He also penned the lyrics for "Watermill" and "Jeolumbari," both of which were composed by Hyun Je-myeong as well.

Lee Eun Sang (이은상), born on October 22, 1903, and passing on September 18, 1982, hailed from Jeonju but spent much of his life in Masan, Gyeongnam. He was the second son of Lee Seung-gyu (이승규) and adopted several pen names, with Nosan (노산;鷺山) being the most prominent, alongside Namcheon (남천; 南川), Gangsan Yuin (강산유인; 江山遊人), and Duwooseong (두우성;斗牛星).

As a distinguished South Korean sijo poet, historian, and honorary doctor of literature, Lee Eun Sang produced significant works including the 'Nosan Sahwa Collection,' 'Nosan Sijo Collection,' 'Nosan Poetry Collection,' 'I Want to Go,' 'Night at Seongbulsa Temple,' and 'Climbing the Old Hill.' His contributions to the arts were recognized with several accolades, including the Arts Academy Merit Award, the 5/16 National Award, and honours from the Arts and Culture Division.

Life and Activities

He completed his secondary education at Masan Changshin School (昌信學校), an institution established by his father in 1918, and pursued studies in the liberal arts at Yonhui College (연세대학교; 延世大學校), although he is believed to have left the college in 1923. Between 1925 and 1927, he attended Waseda University (와세다 대학; 早稲田大学) in Japan, where he audited courses in the Department of History.

In 1931, Lee Eun Sang began his academic career as a professor at Ewha Womans College (이화여자대학교; 梨花女子大學校). He later took on leadership roles, including the presidency of Honam Shinmun in 1945, and continued to teach at various institutions such as Cheonggu University, Seoul National University (서울대학교), and Yeungnam University (영남대학교; 嶺南大學校) after 1950. Additionally, he held presidencies in several cultural organizations, including the Korean National Culture Association and the Korean Sijo Writers Association, as well as the Korean Mountaineering Club (한국산악회), which was founded in 1945.

Prior to Korea's liberation, he was an active participant in the National Literature Faction and was arrested during the Joseon Language Society Incident (조선어학회 사건; 朝鮮語學會事件), which involved the Japanese authorities detaining members of the Korean Language Society in 1942. His literary contributions began in the early days of the Joseon Literary World (조선문단) magazine, and despite being imprisoned at Hongwon Police Station and Hamheung Prison, he was released the following year. In 1945, he faced detention at Gwangyang Police Station under a preliminary arrest warrant for thought crimes but was freed following Korea's liberation.

Following his liberation, he produced a substantial body of work across journalism, academia, and historical writing. His explorations of the country resulted in numerous travelogues, and he gained recognition as a researcher of Admiral Yi Sun-sin (이순신; 李舜臣). In 1954, he was elected to the National Academy of Arts and subsequently became the president of the Chungmugong Admiral Yi Sun-sin Memorial Association in 1959. His leadership extended to the National Culture Association and the Ahn Jung-geun (안중근) Admiration Association in 1965, where he dedicated efforts to honour significant national figures. Notably, he contributed to the founding declaration of the Democratic Republican Party in 1963.

He earned both his master's and doctoral degrees in Korean language and literature from Kyunghee University (경희대학교; 慶熙大學校) in 1970, followed by an honorary doctorate in literature from Yonsei University in 1974. That same year, he assumed the role of chairman of the National Council for Total Security and became the lifetime chairman of the Sijo Writers Association. His accolades included being named a lifetime member of the National Academy of Arts in 1978 and serving on the National Advisory Committee on Government Administration in 1981. His contributions to the arts were recognized with several awards, including the National Academy of Arts' Merit Award and the May 16 National Award.

His literary legacy includes popular sijos such as “Gagopa” (가고파), “The Night of Seongbulsa Temple” (성불사의 밤), and “Going Up the Old Hill” (옛동산에 올라), alongside significant publications like “Nosan Sahwajip” (노산사화집), “Nosan Sijojip” (노산시조집), and “Yi Chungmu-gong Chronicles” (이충무공 일대기). Throughout his life, he was committed to the dual pursuits of sijo poetry and fostering national consciousness. In 1982, he was appointed as an advisory member of the State Affairs Advisory Council (Another link about this Council), but he passed away later that year, leaving behind a rich tapestry of cultural contributions.

He additionally composed the lyrics for the commemorative song dedicated to Mr. Kim Gu (김구) and President Park Chung-hee (박정희).

His Work

In 1921, the poem "Blood Tide" was published in the fourth issue of "Ahseong" (아성) under the pseudonym Du Woo-seong (두우성), marking the beginning of his literary career. However, it was not until the establishment of "Chosun Literature" in 1924 that he fully engaged in literary activities. Throughout this magazine, he contributed numerous critiques, essays, and poems, although he largely overlooked traditional national studies and sijo, favouring Western free verse instead. During this period, he produced approximately thirty free verse poems, in stark contrast to just one sijo.

His critical writings from this era include notable titles such as “A Study of Poet Whitman,” “Tennyson’s Four Poems,” and “Lectures on the History of British Poetry,” with significant contributions appearing in "Chosun Literature" and "Dong-A Ilbo." These works reflect the literary landscape of the time and his engagement with Western literary traditions. However, by the latter half of 1926, as discussions surrounding the revival of sijo gained momentum, there was a noticeable shift towards traditional literature and national studies.

Lee Eun Sang (이은상)– Nosanmunseon (노산문선)

Between 1929 and 1930, he published several poems that incorporated folk song rhythms, including “Sae Taryeong” (New Song), “Maehwadong” (Selling Flowers), and “Joseon’s Flower” (Flower of Joseon). In addition to his poetry, he also contributed to the field of criticism with works such as “A Brief Study of Cheongsang Folk Songs” and “The Life and Art of Hwang Jini.” This period marked a significant evolution in his literary focus, as he began to embrace traditional forms alongside his earlier Western influences.

The poet's sijo reflects a deep intertwining of admiration for his homeland, its natural landscapes, traditional Eastern sentiments, and the Buddhist notion of impermanence. His profound affection for his country and its people manifests with an intensity akin to religious fervour. The simplicity and authenticity of his language resonate with a broad audience, contributing significantly to the resurgence of the sijo form.

Initially, he regarded sijo as inferior to literature, only embracing it as a legitimate literary form following discussions surrounding its value. Despite this initial scepticism, he engaged in writing both free verse and sijo for a period, ultimately establishing himself as a prominent sijo poet by the late 1930s. His journey into this genre marked a significant evolution in his literary identity.

In addition to composing sijo, he also translated Tang poetry into this format, thereby enriching the genre and expanding its theoretical framework. His contributions not only enhanced the sijo tradition but also demonstrated the versatility and depth of this poetic form, bridging cultural and literary boundaries.

Lee Eun Sang (이은상) – Nosan Sijo Collection (노산시조집)

In his essays featured in the Dong-A Ilbo, including “The Problem of Sijo” (April 30–May 4, 1927), “A Brief Discussion of Sijo” (April 18–25, 1928), and “The Problem of Sijo Creation” (March 30–April 9, 1932), the author sought to clarify the standard structure of sijo through pitch rather than syllable count. His inaugural personal collection, “Nosan Sijo Collection,” released in 1932, embodies themes of nostalgia, appreciation, transience, and reverence for nature.

Notable pieces such as "Thinking of Hometown," "I Want to Go," and "Night at Seongbulsa Temple" have gained popularity as songs, reflecting the simple and melodious qualities of sijo. Following liberation, his focus shifted towards social themes, emphasizing national pride, the anguish of division, aspirations for reunification, and honouring patriots. This thematic evolution culminated in the 1958 collection, ‘Nosan Sijo Anjip’, particularly in works like 'The Meaning of the Blue Sky' (1970) and his final compilation, ‘Giwon’.

His approach to sijo included an attempt to simplify the form by experimenting with the two-chapter sijo (兩章時調), although later in his career, he tended to increase syllable counts. As a historian and essayist, he utilized his extensive historical knowledge to produce numerous travelogues and biographies aimed at fostering patriotism. Post-liberation, he prioritized social contributions over literary pursuits, leaving behind a substantial body of work, including poetry collections like ‘Nosanmunseon’ and ‘Nosansimunseon’, the essay collection ‘Musang’, and over 100 books, including his biographies such as ‘Journal of Tamna Traveling Hal’.

Awards and Remembrance

Lee Eun Sang's funeral took place as a public event, culminating in his interment at the national cemetery. A commemorative monument, known as 'Gagopa Songbi' (가고파 송비), was established in Masan to honour his ancestors. In recognition of his contributions, he was posthumously awarded the Order of Merit for National Foundation in 1990.

- South Korea didn't know what had happened last night. He was only drinking with Mongolia when his memories instantly black out, as if nothing had happened, like a missing picture left to be scoured out by the vultures inside his brain. He had remembered smiling and laughing at something Mongolia had said, a blush forming on his cheeks, but perhaps that was the wine speaking. After all, how could he be gay? He despises them and how unnatural they are. Then he opens his eyes as realization hits in. Mongolia. Suddenly his body shoots up, feeling himself wince as he realizes almost all of his body parts from waist down feel like they have broken their bones. He looks down, to find himself bare, no clothes in sight. His neck has been attacked with bite marks, red and hurting. He gently brushes a hand over them, feeling the depth and asking himself who the hell would have sunk teeth this deep. He looks around the room, his brows furrowing, trying to find out where he is. It seems he was in Mongolia's hotel room, with the man's luggage just near the bed. Then he hears the sound of someone serenely sleeping, feeling their breaths on his bare skin. South shivers as he feels warmth through the cold air around the room. He was going to apologize to Mongolia about sleeping with a girl in his hotel room. He carefully slips out of bed, trying to find his clothes while making the softest sounds possible, not wanting to wake whoever he just slept with up. He finally finds his crumpled clothes near the door - did he seriously throw it away from the bed last night? - and carefully dresses himself up. As he fixes his bedhead hair he decides to wake the girl he - foolishly - decided to sleep with. In like, Mongolia's room. Speaking of Mongolia... He tries to recall the events that happened last night, coming to him like a movie being reeled back by the projector. His mind gives him the tiniest hints, from America giving him her concert ticket, to him standing in front of the stage with a bunch of nobodies, to seeing Mongolia in his outfit thinking he's attractive, to loving the way Mongolia sings, throat-singing and all. He remembers complimenting Mongolia's performance and the latter blushing; he remembers the drinks and how joyous he felt that night. But there was something missing from his memory. He frowns as he tries to recall. Something important. Minguk furrows his brows, trying to remember what happened to Mongolia last night and why he ended up here. Thinking of Mongolia made him feel warmth inside of him, something undefinable yet carnal inside of him. Then he puts two and two together. He whirls around to look at the body on the bed. Minguk gasps, feeling his breath knocked out of his lungs, seeing the dark hair covering the man's face; oh, but he knows who he is by now. So he screams. Mongolia stirs from his slumber, muttering how he is rudely awaken, hands in his messy hair as he slowly gets up. When his dark red eyes glace towards Minguk - who was shuddering near the door and curling as far he could from Mongolia- and so the man on the bed takes notice of his barren body, aching lower parts the salty taste in his mouth, and the bite marks on his collar bone. They both scream at once.

製藥公司告訴員工如何製作手衝咖啡。

廣東藥業有限公司（首席執行官Sungwon Choi）於19日宣布，在Gangsan Millennium Garden，一個複雜的文化空間，為員工開展了第六屆藝術課程。位於首爾瑞草區總部二樓。廣東醫藥藝術班是一項內部文化講座，讓員工體驗各種文化生活。 Kwangdong Pharm將提前收集員工想要的講座的主題和意見，並在活動中反映出來。

本次活動邀請國際比賽獲勝者Kim Jin-koo擔任“手滴咖啡班”主題講師。手滴液是提取咖啡的典型方法之一。使用滴頭和紙質過濾器將熱水慢慢倒入磨碎的咖啡豆中。

咖啡師Kim Jin-gu進行了一系列理論講座，講解咖啡的歷史，各種豆類，根據水溫的咖啡風味和香氣的差異，以及各種方式的手滴。參與者根據自己的喜好喝著不同口味和香氣的咖啡，並比較彼此的咖啡並進行比較。

廣東藥業的一位官員說：“我計劃這次講座是一個分享適當的咖啡文化的機會，有很多員工要求上咖啡課。我們將繼續準備課程，幫助我們享受我們附近熟悉的文化，就像這樣。“

[Individual member Q&A] [Rap Monster: No secrets] To Rap Monster Q: Why is Rap Mon the leader? I really like Rap Mon. Rap Monster: I am the first member of Bangtan Boys. We had several member changes during the trainee period. The current members were fixed when we debut. Afterall, we are a hip hop group and it was formed around me, who is a rapper. So that was how I naturally became the leader. [V: I’m not 4D] To V Q: There’s a video where V suddenly started dancing by himself on the street at night. Why were you dancing alone? V: When we first came to Japan, we finished an interview and there was some time left. I wasn’t hungry yet and the interview shooting was a bit noisy. The temperature outside was just right so I went outside. Even though there’s pedestrians around, they can watch if they wanted to. I jumped around to kill time. [Jimin: I like my own eyes.] To Jimin Q: Jimin always wear sleeveless shirts. Are you the most confident in your arms? Or is it your abs? （^ v ^） Jimin: I’m not wearing sleeveless shirts because I’m confident in my arms. I never thought I would have to wear that even in the winter… (laughs). My favorite part of my body is my eyes. I like the type of eyes that look a bit puffy. (V: Even if you’re confident in your abs, wearing shirts that bear your midriff is too much….) [J-Hope: In fact I am quite attentive.] To J-Hope Q: During self-introductions, J-Hope always says “hope, hope.” What’s the thing you hope for the most right now? J-Hope: First is for Bangtan Boys to be a big success. After that is for me to continue to grow to become the best artist. Also, to work hard and study Japanese. In Japan I need to be able to introduce myself to everyone. Full of hope! (laughs) [Jin: Pajamas are a necessity] To Jin Q: What kind of singer does Jin want to become? Jin: I like a British singer called Daley. Listening to his soft singing technique and sweet voice makes one feel very calm. It’ll be great if I can also become a singer like that. [Suga: My personality is exactly the same as my dad’s.] To Suga Q: Suga oppa said before that he steals Jungkook’s underwear. Was it successful at other times? Suga: It seemed like Jungkook became very careful after that so it wasn’t successful. Well, I also don’t steal Jungkook’s underwear everyday (laughs). I only borrow when I don’t have anymore to wear. I bought a few pairs now so I’m all set. [Jungkook: A manly Busan child] To Jungkook Q: Why does Jungkook always pierce his right ear? Jungkook: There’s no reason. Even though I have piercings on both ears, my ears got hurt when I was training. That’s why I didn’t get anymore piercings there but I also hurt my right ear practicing this time. So I’m pretty much not wearing any on both ears (laugh). (Jin: I also only wear on my left ear. It’s because in the movies I watched when I was younger, all of the actors I liked only wore earrings on one side… I always thought when I was younger that I will only wear it on one side.) [Music & Activities] Q: Please let us know of the female artists you like!! Rap Monster: Younha. I heard that she is also active in Japan. I’m truly her fan. She’s currently a radio DJ in Korea and I really want to be on it in the future. J-Hope: I recently saw Lim Junghee’s stage presence. Although she’s a big sunbae, I would like to work with her in the future.

Which song of yours do you like?

Rap Monster: So hard…. ah, the hidden track ‘Road/Path’ in 2 Cool 4 Skool. The reason is as long as you’re listening to it, you’ll still be in a good mood. J-Hope: I like Paldo Gangsan since it’s in satoori. This song can show nicely the color of Bangtan Boys in which 5 members grew up elsewhere. Jin: I like 'I Like It’ the best. Suga: I also like 'I Like It.’ It’s a song I easily wrote without any twists and turns so I’m very satisfied with it. Besides, fans also like this song. V: Attack on BTS. I like upbeat songs so this song really suits me. Jungkook: I personally like 'We On.’ (starts singing)

Q: There must have been many hardships during the trainee period. How did you get through this period of time? ^^ Rap Monster: If I really wanted to change up my mood, I would write songs, eat delicious food.. there’s actually a lot of ways. When it felt difficult, I usually went out on my own. I would go to Hangang or the park, places where there’s not a lot of people. I would walk around while listening to music. Lately I haven’t been able to go out much since I may get recognized. If I don’t manage myself well, there might…. just kidding (laugh). J-Hope: My hometown is elsewhere so when time got difficult, I thought about my parents who are far away. They have been supporting me from far away. As long as I think about wanting to see them, I would muster up the courage and continue on.

Q: It’s already been half a year since you debut. What has and has not changed in the past half a year? Rap Monster: Everything has changed. Before everyone was normal and I think everyone became handsome now. I always wore gym/athletic clothes everyday and it felt like I was a bad student (laugh). What hasn’t changed is what the dorm is like. It’s exactly the same as before. We always fight over things like who gets to shower first, or who borrowed someone else’s things, or that the dorm is too dirty… J-Hope: Exactly like how it was when we were trainees (laughs). What also hasn’t changed is how everyone is still gentle kids. There is mutual understanding between everyone hehehe. V: I got skinnier. What hasn’t changed is… eyes and personality? Jimin: V is definitely 4D for replying like that. Although a lot has changed here, don’t forget the original intention that we wanted to change for the better. Jungkook: Yes, don’t forget our early intentions.

Q: What’s the most surprising gift you’ve received from fans? （*^^*) Jungkook: I said it’d be great to have a massager and I really got one. Jin: I received a doghouse for my dog at home. It was too, too shocking. J-Hope: I received a super, super, super long letter. I felt touched because she probably really liked me. And it was during the trainee period. Jimin: I also received a big card where it was filled up with small words. I received very mindful gifts from the Japanese fans. And they were written in Korean; there were ocassionally mistakes, so cute. Thank you everyone. [Members] Q: Are there secrets that only the members know? ^—^? Rap Monster: Hmm.. I think it has already all been disclosed before. Like whether we have birthmarks on our butts? That I know.. no (laughs) since we shower together. J-Hope: We shower together daily (laugh). There’s only one bathroom so pretty much two people would shower together. Sometimes even three would shower together. There’s really no secrets. Q: If you’re a girl, which Bangtan member do you want to date? Jin & Jungkook: Myself. Suga: If I’m a girl, I would also want to choose myself (laughs). I’m not fond of playing and am not wordy, I’m relaxed when I do things… it’s very similar to my dad’s personality. Jimin: I choose Jungkook. He’s easily embarassed so it’s really cute. He also has a manly side to him. V: I choose J-Hope hyung. Although he’s not an interesting person, one will be in a good mood all thanks to his smile. Rap Monster: I choose J-Hope or Jimin. I don’t like the bad guy, bad girl thing. I think it’s better when you directly express your love. If I’m a girl, I will choose a guy that will wholeheartedly treat me well so those two would be my choice. J-Hope: I love you Rap Mon. I’ll also choose Rap Mon! He’s very manly. Also if I’m a girl, I would be mesmerized by his voice. He probably would write songs for me which would be great. Q: Looks like the relationship within BTS is very good. Do you fight? If you do, what’s the reason? Rap Monster: Things such as who ate the food someone else bought (laughs). Jin: It’s not really to the degree of fighting. Rap Monster: Who borrows clothes that someone just bought.. just little things like that. The borrowing of clothes problem happens occassionally. If someone says they really want to wear that piece of clothing, then we’ll still let him borrow it. Ah, but the clothes that we received as gifts from fans are definitely not lent out since they are exclusively the belongings of the members. Jungkook: I don’t have much social experience yet so when I want to joke around, I end up saying something I shouldn’t have. The hyungs would then lecture me. Q: V is known for being 4D. Tell us stories that make him really 4D! V: I do not think that (I’m 4D). Jimin: Even though he doesn’t know it himself, he really is 4D. I would watch it from the side and keep thinking 'why is he like this?’ V: It’s obviously a justifiable thing! Look, if you want to dance, then you can just dance outside. Why do people go to clubs to dance? Also singing.. if you want to sing, you can sing anywhere - in the dorms or in the practice room. Jimin: I won’t even call you 4D if it’s to that degree. I see you staring at something far away and then all of a sudden you scream out “Wahhhh~” V: That’s because I’m making a wish to the sky. Isn’t there scenes that like in dramas? I just simply wanted to imitate it. Q: To all members! If you can be another member for a day, who would it be? Jimin: Hmm… I still want to live in my own body (laughs). If I must choose, then J-Hope hyung. Sometimes hyung would have a serious look on his face. I want to know what he is thinking. I also want to be Rap Monster hyung. (Since he’s tall) I want to know what the air is like up there (laughs). V: Since I’m breathing air up there, it’s not too bad (laughs). I want to become Jimin. I want to let everyone see my abs during the 'No More Dream’ period. Jungkook: I want to be Rap Mon hyung since I want to have his useful knowledge. Jin: I want to be Jungkook. If I had one day, I want to become Jungkook who’s good at everything. J-Hope: I also want to become Jungkook. I’m concerned about what exactly Jungkook is thinking about. He’s a kid that would do out of the ordinary things. I also really want to know what it feels like to be the maknae. Q: If you had to go to a deserted island, which member would you bring with you? Please state the reason. Jin: I’ll bring Jungkook. First he’s strong and he usually carries around all of my necessities so he’s been a great help. Jungkook: I also choose Jin hyung. Hyung is a good cook and will put to good use the things I bring over. Rap Monster: I choose V because he’s loud so I won’t be lonely. J-Hope too because he’s very optimisic. It feels like he’s going to say to me, “There’s hopes of living!” (laughs) J-Hope: If I’m with Jimin, I think we’ll be able to make things smoothly. Suga: I also choose Jimin because he listens well to me (laughs). Besides he’s very vital so it feels like he’ll still live quite well even on a deserted island. V: Me too! Finding food to eat and giving me a massage… it feels like there’s a lot of things I can use Jimin for! Jimin: I absolutely will not go to a deserted island, absolutely (laugh). Q: Which member looks the worst when sleeping? Jimin: I think #1 is V. He sleeps on the top bunk and it looks like he’s going to fall down. He also sleep talks. J-Hope: It scared me so much, so terrifying. Jimin: He’s a kid that likes to act so even his dreams are like a mini drama. He would say things like “Oohh wah, no way~!” J-Hope: I sleep with my arms up, Jungkook sleeps with his legs crossed and Rap Monster also has his unique way of sleeping. Rap Monster: Yes, and I thought I would be #1. I also almost fell down from the top bunk before and I also snore.

[Lifestyle] Q: “Although I don’t look like it, I’m actually a ___ guy!!” Please fill in the blank. Jungkook: Since I’m the maknae I usually give a cute image but I’m actually a Busan guy so I also have a cool side (laughs). Jimin: Me too. I look like I’m well behaved but I’m actually very manly. Jin: Although I’m the oldest in the group, I’m actually the maknae at home. So I don’t look like it but I’m actually the maknae. I have an older brother. Suga: I’m not like how I look. I’m actually a very calm guy. I usually don’t like to talk and my moves are also very slow…. Rap Monster: For me, I don’t look like it but I’m actually a detailed guy. Even though I’m the king of destruction, I’m very detailed and picky when it comes to music and my hobbies. If I clean, I must clean until every corner is spotless and in the end it turns into a big clean-up. It’s because I’m A blood type. J-Hope: I also don’t look like it but I’m actually a detailed guy! I’m someone that thinks twice before I act. V: I… although I’m usually called 4D, I’m actually a healthy guy. Jimin: What does that mean? A normal guy? V: Yes, that’s what it means! Q: Everybody screams when they see Jimin’s abs. Do you exercise everyday to keep up with the abs? I want to lose weight, do you have any exercise recommendations for me? Jimin: Before I must do sit ups everyday but recently sleep is the priority. Lately I’ve been busy so I haven’t had time to go to the gym. If I have time then I would sort of exercise a bit in the dorms. My weightloss exercise recommendation is our dances (laughs). If you follow our dances, you’ll definitely be skinny. V: Especially 'We are Bulletproof 2’. It’s really effective. Sometimes after practicing it, I would get hungry. Q: Hello Bangtan Boys （^_^）. Everyone’s personality has so many colors. Do you have any exclusive preferences in terms of eating and fashion? Jin: I like to eat subtly/lightly. It’s not that I like to eat expensive food but rather food that suits my taste. But it seems like all of the food in the world suits my taste. Jungkook: I like salty and spicy food. For clothes I like red and black. I only have those two colors in my closet. Jin: If you open his closet, it’s like one side is all black and the other is all red. There really isn’t any other color besides these two (laughs). Jungkook: I also don’t understand why I like red so much but I also want to try different colors. It’s perhaps time for a change?! Q: Tell us about your clothes when you sleep! Jin: I must wear pajamas no matter where I am. I prepared summer and winter pajamas. Jungkook: I will choose loose clothings to sleep in. It’s usually short sleeves. I’ll take it off if it’s hot and if it’s cold, I’ll wear long sleeves and a hoodie. Suga: Although I like to sleep naked, I can’t since I live in the dorms. I wear a T-shirt and underwear. Rap Monster: I also wear gym shirts and underwear. It’s more comfortable that way. I actually want to take off my shirt but my stomach isn’t well so I can easily catch a cold. I also only wear gym clothes in the winter. It’s usually warmer in the house and the blanket is also thick. I like the feeling of the blanket touching my skin. J-Hope: I’m different every day. I’ll only wear my underwear when I’m really tired. Usually it’s T-shirt and mid-length pants. Jimin: Vest and pants. It’s the most comfortable pairing. V: I will consider it everyday when I sleep. Yesterday it was trousers and a white T-shirt. If I’m really tired and have no energy to think about it then I’ll just take it all off and sleep. Also, I sleep on the top bunk and sometimes it’s a pain to climb up and down. I usually sleep on Jimin’s bed, but Jimin…. Jimin: After taking a shower I see V sleeping on my bed and I go, “Get out!” Then V will go to Jungkook’s bed. Then if Jungkook comes over…. V: Jungkook will wake me up and say, “Hyung, there’s no where for me to sleep. Go up.” But I’ll wait until Jungkook falls alseep and I’ll go back to his bed and sleep beside him. He’ll get angry and say, “Ah~ hyung! Hurry go up and sleep!” I can only say, “Ok, ok, I know, I know” and then go back up to my own bed. Jimin: It’s like that every time…

JIMIN’S COMMITMENT

My aim is, frankly, to be the 1st! This has many meanings but, I want to get the 1st place in a music program and I also want to get a really important award at some awards ceremony.

JUNGKOOK’S COMMITMENT

“In 2014 I want to upgrade my vocal power!”

I really want to become a skilled person. I always practice every day but I think that I’m still lacking.

J-HOPE’S COMMITMENT

“Since we already got an award I want to work harder and show a better me.  Since we’ll also have activities in Japan look forward to them”.

I’m also learning Japanese, so I’m already putting thoughts on working hard for our Japanese activities.

V’S COMMITMENT

“In 2014 I want to upgrade my vocal power a lot and I want to impress a lot of people.” If I upgrade my vocal habilities I also think that BTS’s level will rise.

RAP MONSTER’S COMMITMENT

In 2014 I wrote about the songs I want to write and make. When it comes to songs, I want to make songs with R&B melody instead of ballads. Also, I don’t want to just rap, I also want to sing!

JIN’S COMMITMENT

“In 2014 I want to try getting muscles/abs”. I think it’ll be good to try it once. I thought that if I get them it’ll be good. Since I’m I can’t lie to my body…

SUGA’S COMMITMENT

“I hope this year I don’t get sick…”

Since I got sick and couldn’t do anything I was really sad. So I’ll be good if in 2014 all the members are healthy.
