The Mighty Cholas
flickr
The Mighty Cholas by Shikher's Imagery Via Flickr: Sun still dawns on the Cholas and their history which needs to be retold. Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram was built by Rajendra Chola I, who ruled from 1012 to 1044 CE. He was considered to be the most significant ruler in early eleventh-century South Asia for his role in patronising the arts, encouraging trade, and expanding the Chola Empire to its greatest extent. Gangaikonda Cholapuram literally means the town of the Chola who took over the Gangetic plains. Rajendra Chola decided to build a grand new capital city for his empire by anointing it with water from the Ganga, which was two thousand kilometres away from Thanjavur, the Cholas' then capital city. In one of the most successful military expeditions in Indian history, the Cholas left Thanjavur, conquering every kingdom en route to modern-day Bangladesh, and returned triumphantly with the holy water from Ganga. The Cholas became an economic superpower by defeating kings along the route, who became Chola subordinates and trading partners. Chola-Gangam, or Ponneri Lake as it is now known, is one of India's largest man-made lakes. It was built by Rajendra Chola, marking the victory of the mighty Cholas.

Nandikeshwara
flickr
Nandikeshwara by Shikher's Imagery Via Flickr: The ornate idol of Nandikeshwara, or Nandi, as he is popularly known, is the most ardent devotee of Lord Shiva and also the custodian of Mount Kailash. Nandi's story is less well-known than that of Bhakt Prahlad, but it is just as interesting. Nandi was born after his father, Sage Shilada, prayed intensely to Lord Shiva for an immortal child. Nandi was highly gifted, with knowledge of the Vedas and Puranas, as well as many other disciplines. When told he had a short life, Nandi had faith in Lord Shiva and performed a yajna with intense meditation, which pleased his god. Lord Shiva then transformed Nandi into his vahana, with the face of a bull. There are several other stories and theories about Nandi in different scriptures, such as the story of Nandi being born as a whale to get Maa Parvati back to his master, Lord Shiva. Nandi as seen at the Brihadisvara Temple at Gangaikonda Cholapuram in Tamil Nadu.

Caṇḍeśānugrahamūrti (चण्डेशानुगृहमूर्ति) – Lord Śiva blessing Caṇḍeśa
One of the most striking sculptures found in the Bṛhadīśwara Temple at Gañgāikoṇḍa Coḷapuram is a classical murti or form of Lord Śiva, that of Caṇḍeśānugrahamūrti – thus form is based on the legend of the Śaiva devotee Caṇḍeśa who was blessed by Lord Śiva – the Caṇḍeśa in this sculpture in this temple represents the king Rājendra Coḷan himself. Depicted here in life size high bas relief, kneeling at the feet of the Lord who bestows his blessings by winding a garland of flowers around the king’s crown while Devī Umā Parameśwarī looks on benignly.
The temple is believed to have been completed in 1035 CE in the 9th regnal year of King Rājendra I
