Sarann Knight (July 22, 1920 - December 22, 2014) was born in Eufaula, Oklahoma to parents of mixed African American and Native American ancestry. She migrated to Las Vegas in 1942, settling with her husband, Luther Walker, in the Westside African American community. She first sought employment on Jackson Street, the Black business district, and soon became a Keno writer in the Cotton Club. She moved to Hawthorne, Nevada with her husband and purchased her first gaming venture, a nightclub for Blacks offered to her for $600.00. Borrowing the money from her father, she renamed the enterprise the Tonga Club. She became the first Black woman to own a gaming license in Nevada.

She returned to Las Vegas in 1955 and went to work at Jerry’s Nugget as an experiment. The NAACP had been told that Jerry’s Nugget would hire a Black dealer if they could send in a qualified person. She accepted the challenge, intending to work at the North Las Vegas casino for six months. She stayed there for seven years.

She went back into business for herself as the owner and operator of The People’s Choice Casino. She purchased the famed Moulin Rouge in 1989 with her third husband, Joe Preddy. The resort had passed through several owners, never realizing the success that it had enjoyed in its heyday. The problems continued despite her best efforts. The Rouge was closed in the late 1990s, and the famed hotel casino burned to the ground in 2003.

She ran for the Las Vegas City Council, served on the local NAACP Executive Board, organized the Women’s Auxiliary to the local NAACP branch, and became a founding member of the Las Vegas Barbara Jordan Democratic Club. She was a key leader in the business sorority, Gamma Phi Delta. She worked with a group of Black women to organize the Las Vegas Black Historical Society. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #gammaphidelta

Violet T. Lewis (May 27, 1897 – March 23, 1968) was a businesswoman and educator who founded the Lewis College of Business in 1928, the only HBCU in Michigan.

She was born Violet Temple Harrison in Lima, Ohio. She was the second of the six children of William and Eva Harrison. She graduated from Lima High School. She attended Wilberforce University.

Her first job was as secretary to the president of Selma University. She taught secretarial classes in its business department. She moved to Indianapolis, where she worked as a bookkeeper.

After noticing a large number of young unemployed people, she took a $50 loan and opened the Lewis Business College in 1928 in Indianapolis. She started her radio program, “The Negro Melody Hour”, with the hope of boosting enrollment in the college. The program made her the first Black radio announcer in Indiana.

She owned multiple small businesses in Indianapolis, including an ice cream shop and a store selling Christmas trees and fireworks. She started a school in Detroit in 1939, which opened the following February. She closed the Indiana college once the college’s success in Detroit became apparent.

She co-founded the Gamma Phi Delta Sorority.

She received a posthumous honorary doctorate from Wilberforce University. In 1992, she was inducted into the Michigan Women’s Hall of Fame. In 2021, a portion of the M-10 highway in Detroit was named the Violet T. Lewis Memorial Highway.

She married Thomas Garfield Lewis (1920-1943) and had two children. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #gammaphidelta
