Gunslugs 2 Review | GamersFTW
Any fans out there of over the top and carnage filled 80s and 90s action flicks? How about classic 2D side-scrolling shooters like Metal Slug? Developed by Dutch indie developer Orangepixel comes the chaotic, fast-paced 2D shooter Gunslugs 2. If mowing down armies of wacky enemies in a mindless pixilated frenzy sounds like your sort of scene then this may just be for you, at least for a short time anyway. N4G: news feed

Biased Game Reviews: Journey
Tumblr media
Quite recently the soundtrack for the game Journey was released. I played the game a month ago, and loved it, so I bought the soundtrack. It’s a lovely album, made up of a very violin/chello/flutes orchestral score. Obviously, it’s all just background music from the game, so as I listened I couldn’t help but imagine where in the game I’d be if this song where blasting out of my TV. It was a fun exercise, though I eventually went to work on other things as I continued to listen to the soundtrack. I start working on a story and soon the soundtrack is coming to its end, and I begin to recognize the music from the game’s final level. I keep working and the music keeps going, and as time goes on, I start noticing this feeling of joy rising in me. By then I’ve stopped writing and the music is hitting its apex and I’m just sitting in my chair basking in this surprise emotional call back. The song had me feeling exactly as I did when I played the games ending. By the time the song ended and the song for the credits began to play, I couldn’t help but sit at my desk, reveling in what felt like a gift. It was about five minutes later that I decided to write a review.
Now onto the about the game itself. It's a downloadable game, exclusive to the PS3. There's no voice-overs, but there’s no reading because there’s no writing. And there’s no dialogue in the game and you don't really fight anything. I mean you’re character doesn’t even have arms. You're just this red hooded person walking from the middle of a dessert to the top of a mountain. Along the way you solve some puzzles that aren't really puzzles, fly without really flying, and sing without really singing. If you play it with the Internet on, you'll get to a friend to walk with you. Then in about 2 hours, you're there walking into the peak of the mountain.
I know on paper it may not be the most enticing adventure, or even the best use for $15, but given that a crappy 3D movie will run you about the same, I think. Even with just an hour and a half of gaming, I personally felt satisfied. I also found the awed elation I referenced above, a feeling that grew more and more pronounced at the end the each consecutive playthrough. Whether for the simple joy of playing it or to get a better understanding of the story, I played through the game about 6 times in the first 2 weeks of owning it. And yes, this game with no arms and no dialogue has a story.
For the most part, It's presented in a very subtle way as you're moving through the game world, usually through the environments and the occasional tapestry that features tapestry that features some hieroglyphic illustration. Then at the end of each level you'll find a short cut scene that shows off a larger tapestry that serves to better feed you the game's back story, because that's all you'll get, back story, the game's actual plot is what you're do in-game. The game’s environments do a very good job of telling their own stories. In most games I’ve played, the environment doesn’t do much for me other than to ground me in the game’s world or show off how great the game’s graphics are. In Journey the settings you’ll traverse through all have a lot of meaning stowed into them. In fact I am pretty sure most player on their second run-though will pass along a few things early on this game and cringe from the allusions to certain parts of the later game. There are alot of little things you’ll find in the game that hint at the amount of effort the game designers put into everything. Even the smallest things like half buried cages.
Once again, I think it's a sign of talent when a soundtrack for a game can bring back the immediacy of the emotions a player felt when they were playing the game.
Onto the multiplayer! It's essentially a very understated co-op. If you've got the internet connected, while you're going about you're journey, you'll come across another hooded person much like yourself. That other person is an actual player playing the game and though you get no information about the person and you have no ability to talk to this person, if you're anything like me you'll still find yourself running right over to them in excitement. There's not much stopping you or the other player from just walking away and playing the game alone, you can and it's perfectly possible to beat the game alone, but even as a mainly single-player gamer I found myself compelled to stay with my partner. I'd wait for them, sing for them, and just generally want to help them. That last one is more of a personal trait of mine, but I find my partners usually behave similarly in all respects. Like I said before, this partnership isn't necessary, but it certainly adds something to the experience.
In the end that's why I'd recommend Journey to even the most non of non-gamers. It's an experience. It's a fun up-lifting experience. Seriously, if you own a ps3, buy it. If you don't own a ps3, find a friend who does and buy it for them. They'll thank you after you let them have their turn.

Mushihimesama Review - GamersFTW
Gabs from GamersFTW writes: Mushihimesama may be on the short size with only five levels, but packs in a range of difficulty modes to make up for it. It is a fun game, which makes players feel over-powered while attempting to dodge beautiful and well-designed bullet patterns. N4G: news feed
