FireandLunch Rewatches Game of Thrones

We so enjoyed fangirling and ranting together while recording our PieCasts for season 4 that we wanted to go through the same experience with the other seasons.  Since we don’t have time to do full PieCasts for seasons 1 through 3, we decided to do short-ish recap posts! Starting tonight, we are going to post one a week (hopefully…), so we will finish about the same time season 5 airs (once again, hopefully…).  Of course, our first recap will be for the first episode, "Winter is Coming."

Episode: 1.1 Winter is Coming

Overall Frey Pie Rating: Rhaegar

This was unanimous amongst our group.  While there are some issues with the episode, we think it is a strong introduction to the show.  By the time “the things I do for love” happens, most people were ready for a second slice of pie.

Episode MVP: Harry Lloyd as Viserys.  So amazing.

Best (Unintentional) Comedic Moment: "I don't fight in tourneys because when I fight a man for real, I don't want him to know what I can do." Insert eye roll.

Rickon Watch: Pretty prominent and laughing over Bran’s misfortune.

Honor Before Intelligence Moments: Surprising, none. (Don’t fret...we’ll be seeing Ned in this category a lot…)

Rhaegar a la Mode Moments

Happy Starks - This is the only time they were ever happy. The introduction to the family was very well done, showing pieces of all of their personalities: Arya and Sansa sewing, Rickon laughing, Arya throwing food at Sansa, Robb's face when he sees Sansa looking at Joffrey, Arya coming in the the helmet on, the look between Jon and Cat.  Special shout-out to the gratuitous shirtless scene.  Best scene ever. (You’re welcome for the link.)

Nice to see Benjen both in his interactions with Jon and Ned. We don't get a lot of him, so we have to treasure the moments that we do get. It was nice to see the camaraderie he has with Ned because we don't really get to see that in the books.

ICE! It’s big.

Viserys being being fantastically creepy with Dany.

Happy Lannister Brothers - It was nice to see Jaime and Tyrion happy for a moment as well, laughing and joking with each other before everything starts to fall apart in their lives as well, such a change from the prison cell scenes from season four.

Opening Credits!  4 seasons in and still amazing.

Nerdrage Moments

Why did the White Walkers chop up their victims? Don't they need their armies to be made up of zombies that are a little more whole? Do they enjoy making corpse crop circles?

Missing scenes and perspectives, mainly Jon’s missing scene with Arya while Robb and Joffrey are fighting (this was part of the original pilot script but later cut) and not getting to view the feast through Jon's eyes.

Dany's rape at her wedding (though there is disagreement on the level of nerdrage, if any, for this change).

Catelyn's motivations - see below.

Lyanna's statue holding a feather and not a blue rose.  Still annoyed about it.

Episode’s Legacy

Treatment of Cat - This is the beginning of their mistreatment of Cat and her personality/motivations. D&D simplify them so that they can have Cat and Luwin have counter positions but it was the first sign that they were not going to get Cat right. The characterization from the pilot continues for the rest of the series.

Jaime and Cersei's relationship - She never seems like she enjoys their relationship at all. She seems bored and cold toward him, which feels like a departure from the books where even if she did not love him the same way he loved her perhaps (open to discussion), he was still her other half, her everything to a degree and that feeling seems to be absent in the tv version.

Dany's rape scene is the first of many added explicit rape scenes in the tv show, which is problematic all around (though in this case, not really unfaithful to the book).

Introduction of the main characters!  On a positive note, we finally got a chance to see a lot of our fave characters in ASOIAF in action.  And some of us still can’t believe that Kit turned from this

in one year.  Good job Kit and HBO!

Believe it or not, work is actually pretty calm at the moment, hence my lack of mental fatigue and my ability to watch many episodes this week! So here we go!

Game of Thrones, Season 3, Episode 3 Rewatch:

1. Wait we actually do see river run?!? How did I forget this

2. Oh right because the Tully’s are from river run

4. This opening scene is filed with awkward comedy and I love it

5. Blackfish doesn’t give a fuck

6. I guess I would feel cheated too if I had edmure marry into my family when I know I could have had Robb Stark

7. I like how Varys is all “wtf is Cersei doing here”

8. I guess Roose Bolton holding harenhall in practice and of itself is good enough to make Tywin chance his mind about naming Baelish lord of harrenhall

Game of Thrones, Season 3, Episode 2: Dark Wings, Dark Words

1. Bran is so much older now!

36. I this scene because you can see how marjorie can match joffreys intensity but you are also worried about what’ going to happen

37. Because anything can happen in game of Thrones and Ramon Djdwadi does a great job using ominous chords

38. How heavy is a cross bow?

39. So what does the screw accomplish? Spreading more of his limbs?

40. Nooooo Ramsay!!!

41. And Arya and sandor are reunited once more

42. I think the Jaime and Brienne fight is the best part of this episode
