“You like it,” Galvan accuses, “like when we’re—we’re warm and relaxed for you. Makes it eas—easier, fuck, not done, not yet!” But whatever Finlay does next makes Galvan howl, until all he can do is clutch tight to your hips while he waits for his cock to stop twitching.

four ladies and some power tools

After Pig Roast, as we waited for final building approval from the Park, University of Alabama, and the represented Native American tribes, we jumped head first into detailing and learning the ins and outs of Enercalc, a structural engineering software, to go over with our consultant Joe Farrugia.

As we continued to study and make decisions on the aesthetics of the visible structure, we were also able to check and balance the structural requirements based off of the loads we recieved from Enercalc. These loads factored in the weight of structure, environmental factors (rain, wind, a small snow load, etc.), and structural qualities of Southern Pine lumber, our building material.

We built 1:1 mockups of possible footing details, looking at multiple factors such as column profile, distance from the bottom of the wood to ground, steel profile, steel width, bolt placement, and screw type and distribution. We spray painted plywood to represent the actual steel which will be galvanized (this actually tricked quite a few classmates that swore it was steel when they first saw them).

Once approval came in, we kicked July off with the craziest batter board set-up we’ve seen in our short careers. We laid out the roof outline first to ensure that we located the pavilion perfectly within the site. However, since our structure is all on a diagonal we pulled a skewed rectangle based off of the first truss line to locate all of the column footings accurately. After 3 days of fighting with the site’s hard dirt and building “extra” reinforced batter boards, we were successfully able to mark out all concrete foundations and have them dug with rebar placed ready for the pour the following week.

And within a week, we had our concrete footings!!

Concurrently, we ran the numbers on the structure and accurately spec’d each connection for the columns and trusses (we’re waiting for our structural engineering degrees, any day now). Once everything was 100% Joe-approved, we presented to Jim Turnipseed of Turnipseed International Steel who graciously provided all of our threaded rod, washers, nuts, and splice plates!

And viola, three weeks later and we have 5 beautiful trusses and 12 columns built and ready to be moved to site (column pictures to come)! Somewhere during that time we also squeezed in design work progressing the paving under the pavilion and we got our steel feet back from Turnipseed International and Super Metal Works here in Newbern.

TUNA TUESDAY

I believe for a lot of us who come from a conventional blue water background one of the main bucket list fish to put in that bucket is a tuna on the fly rod.

There are a few hurdles that need to be cleared.  Some hurdles are  straight forward like picking up the appropriate gear which can easily be settled with a credit card. Other aspects like getting out to the tuna grounds can be a bit more abusive to said credit card which for the most part means owning your own boat or friends with someone who owns a private boat.  The last but not least route is by private charter or a guided trip. Way, way, way off the normal path was a season you could have actually paddled from shore with a chance at going for a tuna sleigh ride...

For gear a fast 12wt  is pretty standard but if you spend most of your time targeting tuna then you can easily add some specialty bluewater rods to your quiver. 12 weights are easily castable for most folks who are used to handling bigger sticks and have the skills to shoot a decent loop without endangering themselves or the others around you. Besides having a solid double haul your ability to fire a cast on your backhand is something you should be comfortable doing as well.  If you have never thrown a big bluewater stick I would highly recommend putting in the time to practice. It’s a huge jump going from an 8wt and 300 grain to a 12wt with a 550-grain head.  That said, not every tuna you encounter is going to need the heavy gear to get the job done.  The fish third from the bottom on this page was one of the several we pulled off a kelp paddy and I was having fun using a 7wt.

The bluewater game is finally the appropriate time to covet a good saltwater fly reel.  One of the features you are going to want to have to chase tuna is a mid to large arbor reel. I would specify a excellent drag as well but most capable reels these days have great drags. Fly guys like to brag about drag so the poor designs get outed online so scroll those reviews.   If you drop some good cash on a reel it’s going to be well made, sealed and have good line pick up.  The biggest fluctuating option you will have to consider is going to be what weight the reel is and I’m talking about actual weight.  Take for example a 12wt Galvan Torque is one of the lighter bluewater reels at only 8.6 ounces.  Compare this to a Hatch 12wt that comes in at over 14 ounces.  

Fly lines should be matched appropriately to the rod wt and be of a fast sink type unless you are throwing a crease fly.  I have a 550-grain big game fast sink fly line on my 12 wt and it works great. 

As far as strategy goes... if the fish are boiling around the boat and willing to eat the fly there’s not much strategy involved just get your line overboard start stripping and get ready to hang on.  There’s one huge consideration when fly fishing for tuna and that’s managing your loose line that’s on the deck of the boat.

Have your line flaked out so it does not catch on anything or use a casting bucket because if you screw this up it’s all going to end in tears.  Also, make sure when you do get bit to help guide your line off the deck onto your reel. 

When the fish are not eating the paint off the boat move to the  bow and try cast as much line in the same direction as the wind and if need be dump all the remaining fly line overboard. Now crack a beer and relax while you let your line sink out.  As the boat drifts forward walk your rod to the stern. Your line will sink below the boat and drift until it is behind the boat.  When your line gets to about a 45-degrees angle from your rod tip start stripping!  Depending on where you are metering fish you can either strip all the way back to the boat and repeat the process or you may want to strip it only part of the way. There is also a method of simply twitching the fly a few strips and that can be very effective too.  All this is done with the appropriate chum line and an eye on the meter.  This works best with fish hanging in that 30′ zone.

Biden to Pick Kamala Harris

LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), July 29, 2020.--All the drama surrounding 77-year-old former Vice President and Democrat presumptive nominee Joe Biden’s pick for a running mate, comes down to a no-brainer, something Team Biden has known for months.  When Biden announces his pick next week, it will be 55-year-old Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), no question about it.  Harris, a U.S. Senator, former California Atty  Gen. and Democrat candidate, gave Biden more than he asked for June 27, 2019 in Miami at NBC’s Democrat primary debate.  Harris accused Joe of insensitivity for his amicable relationships with segregationists Sen. James Eastland (D-Miss.) and Herman Talmadge (D-Ga.)..  Harris showed Joe firsthand she’s ready for a fight, not afraid to speak her mind especially on topics she feels passionate about.  With the current racial justice protests around the country, no one’s better than Kamala to lead the charge.     

        Whether admitted to or not, Biden’s not picking Harris because she’s part East Indian and Jamaican, a person of color, it’s because she’s charismatic, articulate and passionate for what she believes.  Kamala’s rabidly anti-Trump, something most of Joe’s possible running mates agree on, but Kamala can pull it off with cold, calculated logic, just what Joe experienced when he debated her in Miami.  Kamala’s presentation is eerily similar as a female counterpart to former President Barack Obama, with whom Joe spent eight years as vice president.  Without serving with Barack, Joe would be just an ordinary older white guy running for president.  Obama gave Joe his credibility with the African American voters to serve the community’s many political and social interests.  With today’s racial tensions, Kamala’s the perfect compromise between the white, black and  communities of color.      

       Joe found out firsthand how Kamala can present her case, honed from years refining her craft as San Francisco’s District Attorney from 2004 to 2011, then becoming California’s Atty. Gen. from 2011 to 2017, winning former Sen. Barbara Boxer’s senate seat Jan. 3, 2017.  By anyone’s account, Harris is a rising star in the Democrat Party, despite a hiccup when she bombed out of the Democrat Primary Dec. 3, 2019, largely because as young woman of color was not seen as a viable presidential candidate with the likes of 77-year-old Joe Bidem. 71-year-old Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and 78-year-old Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).  But Kamala made a splash in the campaign when she went tete a tete with Joe in Miami.  Knowing what Biden faces in the last three months of the 2020 campaign, he has no better partner than Kamala to get him over the finish line Nov. 3.      

        Former Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) who’s been vetting Joe’s shortlist of  possible running mates, including  55-year-old former National Security Adviser Susan Rice,  66-year-old Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), 52-year-old Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Il.), 50-year-old Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, 71-year-old Sen. Elizabeth Warrant (D-Mass.), 60-year-old New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.), and 48-year-old Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.), thinks Harris hasn’t apologized for going after Biden in Miami.  Instead of apologizing, Dodd should thank Kamala for auditioning for running mate months before Joe locked up the nomination.  When you look at the field, there’s simply no competition for Kamala, when it comes experience and outright talent.  Only Warren has the experience and talent to make the final cut, but she’s not a person of color.    

         When you look at former Obama  National Security Adviser Susan Rice, she carries so much baggage from the Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and “Obamagate” saga, she’d be a lightening rod for unwanted controversy.  Biden has enough controversy with the Ukraine brouhaha where he landed his 50-year-old son Hunger an $83,000 a months job on corruption-plagued Burisma Holdings board.  Hunter admitted to ABC’s Good Morning America Oct. 15, 2019 that it was not the best judgment to accept the job.  Rice, who admitted to “unmasking” conversations between Flynn and former Russian Amb. Sergey Kislyak, would open up a can of worms for Biden.  When it comes to Rep. Val Demings (D-Fl.) she offers Joe nothing special, other than her four-year stint as Orlando Police Chief.  Demings upped her profile serving as an impeachment manager before Trump’s acquittal Feb. 5.   

          When you look at Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), head of Black Caucus, she favors reparations for African Americans, something that could galvanize votes for Trump in the next three months.  Even Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Il), a decorated Iraq War Veteran who lost her leg in co-piloting a helicopter Nov. 12, 2004, offers Biden little in terms to getting him key voting blocks.  Illinois is not a battleground state, offering Biden no immediate or long-term benefits.   When you look at what Kamala brings to the table, there’s no comparison with any of Joe’s choices.  Kamala brings all the necessary experience and talent to prosecute a tough case against Trump in the final three months of the campaign.  None of Biden’s other choices have a background from the nation’s most populous state.  Kamala’s a prime-time, headline candidate, ready to compete at the highest level for the nation’s biggest political prize.

     คุณสมบัติของตะแกรงเหล็กแผ่นเชื่อมชุบกันสนิมของบริษัทแชนคอน        

             1)

ตะแกรงเหล็กระบายน้ำสำเร็จรูป

ขนาดมาตรฐานกว้าง 25cm. และ 30cm. ความยาว 1 เมตร มีสต๊อคพร้อมส่งทันที    โดยในแต่ละขนาดมาตรฐาน มีให้เลือกสองแบบ ว่าเป็นรุ่นที่ต้องการรับน้ำหนักเพียงคนเดินผ่าน  หรือให้รถวิ่งผ่าน      เพราะช่องรูและความหนาของเหล็กจะต่างกัน    

       2)

ระบบเชื่อมหลอมเป็นเนื้อเดียวแข็งแรงกว่า

โดยเชื่อมด้วยออโตเมติคระบบ CO2/MIG     ซึ่งเป็นการเชื่อมด้วยไฟฟ้าทำให้เนื้อเหล็กหลอมละลายเป็นเนื้อเดียวกันทุกด้าน ตะแกรงเหล็กส่วนที่เป็นรอยเชื่อมจะเรียบเนียนสวยงาม    และยึดติดแข็งแรงทนทานกว่าร้านเชื่อมเหล็กทั่วไป     จุดสำคัญอยู่ที่การเชื่อมเป็นเนื้อเดียวกันกับเหล็กแผ่น Flat bar (โปรดตรวจสอบงานเชื่อมเปรียบเทียบกับการใช้แรงงานคนเชื่อม) รับประกันงานคุณภาพความแข็งแรงที่ลูกค้าต้องพิสูจน์ก่อนตัดสินใจ โดยพิจารณาจาก ขนาดช่องรูเล็กได้มาตราฐานเหมือนกัน    

       3)

เคลือบผิวด้วยวิธีการชุบสังกะสีแบบ Hot dip Galvanizing ความหนาไม่น้อยกว่า 75 ไมครอน

   ตามมาตรฐาน ASTM A123, ASTM B6  (ไม่ใช่ใช้สีกันสนิมพ่น/ทา เหมือนร้านทำเหล็กดัดทั่วไป ซึ่งทำให้เหล็กผุกร่อนง่ายกว่างาน    ชุบHDG) งานชุบซิงค์หนากว่าได้ตามมาตรฐาน ทำให้แข็งแรงและทนทานต่อการสึกกร่อนได้นานกว่า งานชุบเร็วแบบบางและการเคลือบพ่นทาสีทั่วไป    

       4)

ออกแบบใหม่และควบคุมการผลิตเพื่อให้แข็งแรงและปลอดภัย

โดยออกแบบให้การวางแท่งเหล็กและโครงตะแกรงได้ระยะที่เหมาะสมที่สุด โดยใช้วัสดุน้อยชิ้นและน้ำหนักเบา     ขณะที่ยังสามารถรับแรงได้สูงสุด จึงทำให้แน่ใจได้ว่าทั้งรอยเชื่อม และโครงสร้างแข็งแรงสม่ำเสมอ     โดยใช้เหล็กบิดเกลียว Twisted Rod หนา 6-8mm เพื่อผสานเหล็กแผ่นเข้าด้วยกันอย่างแข็งแรง และออกแบบให้ป้องกันการลื่นไถลไปในตัว    

       5)

คัดเลือกวัสดุคุณภาพ ผลิตจากวัสดุเหล็กกล้ามาตรฐาน มอก.

ไม่ใช้เหล็กเกรด B หรือต่ำกว่ามาตรฐาน    สามารถตรวจสอบจากน้ำหนักเต็มครบ ตัดเหล็กและประกอบเป็น ตะแกรงด้วยเครื่องจักรที่ทันสมัย    และทีมงานช่างผู้ผลิตตะแกรงเหล็กมืออาชีพจากโรงงานผู้ผลิตตะแกรงเหล็กโดยตรง      

         6)

ตะแกรงเหล็กสำเร็จรูปสามารถรับแรงสำหรับรถขนาดใหญ่

ตามความกว้างมาตรฐาน 25cm.และ 30cm. ในรุ่นที่ความหนาเหล็ก 5mm. ความสูง 25mm. ด้วยช่องรูเล็กเพียง 30mm. เหมาะสำหรับทำรางระบายน้ำ ทางเข้ารอบโรงงาน ที่มีรถพ่วงตู้คอนเทนเนอร์ขนาดใหญ่หรือรถเทรลเลอร์วิ่งผ่านได้อย่างปลอดภัย ตัวอย่างเช่น ความหนาเหล็กแผ่น 3mm. ออกแบบให้ใช้งานรับแรงน้อยไม่เกินรถโฟล์คลิฟต์ ในกรณีที่ต้องการใช้ในงานรับแรงรถวิ่งผ่านตั้งแต่ กระบะ หกล้อ สิบล้อ จนถึง รถพ่วงขนาดใหญ่ ควรใช้ความหนาที่ 5mm. เนื่องจากออกแบบมาให้ช่องรูเล็กและหนาขึ้นจึงรับได้แรงได้สูงมากกว่า 12.5 ตัน        

       7)

ปรับระยะความสูงของบ่ารับตะแกรง ดีกว่าทำตะแกรงใหม่เปลืองงบประมาณ

กรณีลูกค้าเตรียมบ่ารองรับไว้สูงกว่า 25mm. ไม่จำเป็นต้องใช้ตะแกรงที่สูงกว่านี้ เพียงแต่ใช้เหล็กเสริมตรงบ่าด้านล่างให้สูงขึ้น    แล้วใช้ตะแกรง รุ่นที่ความหนาเหล็ก 5mm. ความสูง 25mm. ด้วยช่องรูเล็กเพียง 30mm.    ก็เพียงพอต่อการรับแรงรถเทรลเลอร์ขนาดใหญ่ได้แล้ว ประหยัดงบประมาณด้วยการออกแบบที่ลงตัว        

    8)

 สามารถนำตะแกรงสำเร็จรูปมาเชื่อมต่อกันเป็นขนาดต่างๆได้

ตะแกรงเหล็กชุบสำเร็จรูปพร้อมส่งของบริษัท มีความกว้างมาตรฐาน 2 ขนาด ที่ 25 cm และ 30 cm   กรณีลูกค้าต้องการขนาด50x100cm สามารถประยุกต์เชื่อมหรือวาง 25cm สองแผ่นเข้าด้วยกัน   ในกรณีต้องการใช้ขนาด 100x100cm ก็สามารถใช้ 4 แผ่นเชื่อมจากขนาด 25 cm.    หรือในกรณี 60x100cm. หรือ 100x120cm. ก็สามารถประยุกต์ใช้การประกอบจากแผ่น 30x100cm. เช่นกัน

วิธีการเผื่อระยะความกว้าง สูง ของเหล็กฉากบ่ารับแผ่นตะแกรง

ควรออกแบบเตรียมบ่ารับให้กว้างและสูงพอดีกับแผ่นตะแกรง เพื่อความแข็งแรงและปลอดภัยของการใช้งาน     ดังนั้นบ่ารับตะแกรง(รูปตัว L) จะต้องใช้เหล็กฉากวางลงไปก่อนเทคอนกรีต โดยเว้นความสูงไว้ 25-30mm.(ขึ้นอยู่กับประเภทของตะแกรง)   เพื่อให้ตะแกรงที่วางลงไปเสมอพอดีกับพื้น ไม่สะดุดเวลารถเข็นหรือคนเดินผ่าน

ระยะความกว้างของบ่ารับแผ่นเกรตติ้ง จะต้องบวกเพิ่มข้างละ 3-5mm.รวม 2 ข้างเป็น 6-10mm. เพื่อให้สามารถวางแผ่นตะแกรงลงไปได้พอดี ไม่แน่นหรือหลวมเกินไป

Tales beyond the Veil Part 2   I awoke beyond the river Lethe after the apocalypse had ended. Halfway buried in the graves of fallen giants, I knew this alone with utmost certainty: Whatever world had come before could not have survived the cataclysm from which the pitch black sky and utter silence stemmed.

My senses, or what was left of them, registered nothing but a searing pain on my skin and a heavy weight pushing down my ribs as if to crush them. I forced a first, painful breath, producing a plume of ash over dry and broken lips. The air burned in my lungs and tasted like iron. Taking it in was a fight against the convulsive reflex to hold it, to avoid drowning in the loose, dusty ash that covered me and the world. Nothing but darkness awaited above and dared not look down, in fear of seeing my body torn to pieces. At least that fear survived and as I slowly forced another breath, I found deep beneath all pain a will to survive, a flame I nurtured with each new breath of life.

My eyes still refused to adjust and the world was one of vague shapes and shadows. What had awoken me sat on my chest and pecked viciously bleeding cheeks. The crow-like shape moved galvanic and in an unsightly manner forth and back on my motionless body. My consciousness didn't mind, but its eyes seemed to notice and stared at mine with murderous intent. It's beak, hazily red with dirty blotches blood, clicked dangerously towards my throat.

Where I gathered the strength, I do not know, but driven by instinct alone, my hand thrashed upwards in a painful motion. I felt stubby wings brush against my skin and something of a shock burning my fingertips. If not the touch, it was the raucous groan escaping my lungs that brushed the thing away.

Sharp claws cut into the skin as the crow-thing jumped backward and slyly lowered itself into a cowering position. Two spindly legs stalked around the outline of my body in the roiled earth. It's naked head jolted back and forth with murderous curiosity. Somewhere in my mind, I recognized the distinctive motions of a scavenger, awaiting death as an ally. And yet, there was nothing natural about the way that abominable creature was examining my body.

In my mind, a deep and dark fatigue rose in waves and lured me into sleep. So easy it would have been to slip away and let the creature do its work. I did not resist this deadly urge and jolted upward out of spite or valor and with certainty not out of calculating wit. Simple, primal fear jerked my muscles and forced my body into motion. Looking upward into the abyss of the cosmos itself, I dared not hope that death was awaiting me on these broken fields. Even without any memory of a world before, the state my fate was in did not allow for such an easy way.

At last, I struggled to move my legs and felt the heavy weight lifted, that had been laid on me by time and wind.

First, I freed my second hand and held it up before my eyes. Indeed, it was complete and unbroken. Almost in disbelief, I moved my fingers back and forth in their suede gloves. Still, I needed to see flesh with my own eyes and so I bit the buckskin with my teeth and forced it off.

Underneath, my hand was covered in black ash and grazed on all knuckles. With gritted teeth, I pushed more ash away and leaned upward.

As my head rose higher than the scavenging thing, it ducked away and kept its distance. Despite its horrid appearance – it's feathers were torn, the legs bend the wrong way and the beak still grimy with blood – I was almost thankful to know it by my side. It's refusal to continue eating my flesh convinced me, that there was still life left in these hurting bones.

With my leg, I felt resistance. Something was holding it back and caused me to hesitate. I was not keen on dirty wounds and did not dare to tear myself away with strength. Further burrowing through ash and cinder revealed more of an erstwhile Prussian blue army coat that was held together by a tough belt and marksman's lanyard. Despite being torn away and shredded in many places, the heavy-duty fabric retained its color much to my surprise and I admit that the few glances of true blue were a silver lining in my mind.

Time and again I stopped, heavily breathing through mouth and nose, trying to keep my wits about myself. After minutes of this excruciating endeavor, I found my foot trapped, the jackboot stuck between two jagged edges that had bitten into the polished leather. Thankful, that I had been patient this time, I examined the metal piece that had been trapped me in this field. What lay buried beneath this soil was no mere wreckage of some sort. These rods, jagged like metal jaws, had been purposefully aligned. Like a makeshift bear trap, this horrible contraption had bitten me with strength. Only the butt of a rifle, broken away and wedged between the metal pieces, had saved my leg from complete loss.

I had no intention to investigate any further. Whether it had been a reflex of mine or mere coincidence that saved me, I could not recall. Without hesitation, I cautiously slipped my foot out of the trap, before it could snap with its full strength. I had barely moved my toes away when the vicious mechanism snapped the piece of weaponry in two and my boot was cut in half.

 My tired, bloody hands would not go any further. Numb from the work, they even struggled the few buttons on my vest, allowing me to breathe freely after all. One foot still covered in the soil, the other in dirty socks, I decided that it was time to leave this ditch in black and see, wherein all worlds my fate had left me.

The little victories since my dawn had brought confidence back into my mind. Maybe it was the inconceivable nature of my situation, that kept myself sane in these moments. I deliberately avoided looking at the missing sky and kept my view down as I was slowly standing up. Weary of new traps and with pain in every limb, I looked for a stick straighten myself up.

A twisted metal rod, gnarled like the branch of an ancient tree, was loose enough stuck into the floor that I allowed myself to pull it out. The strangely light material made for a formidable staff, even though it was rough on the hands and its sharp edges implied violent forces that had torn it from its place. I used the sash to protect my hands where the gloves had worn through. Then, slowly but with rising hopes, I forced myself upright to stand.

The world was an empty stage shrouded in the perpetual gloaming. High above there was darkness an abyss so deep as the heavens had been high. Looking into the black was like watching the depths of the universe. I did not dare to risk a longer glance and forced my eyes away. I turned towards the light, following the long, sharp edges of endless shadows. A lone light shone on a horizon that was otherwise lost in murky gloom, so far away that the blackness of the sky touched the world and devoured it.

This was to be my final destination. So far away and still, it was the only sign of life that I could find. Between myself and the luminous spot in the distance stretched scorched earth and oily slick. Where fire had not burned away the traces of all things, there were scattered remnants of what had transpired, a clash of forces beyond my comprehension. Faced with a destruction of such magnitude that my senses failed to understand, all I could think of was the question why by the will of all fates, I had been displaced to this dimension that surely could not have existed anywhere close to what I called my reality.

I had always thought of myself as a steadfast man, by the right of my command in whatever forces my garments might belong to. For all the loss of my memory, I did recognize a soldiers coat and knew of cannon fire, marching drums and raging thunder. I had just enough of an understanding left of the world, to ascertain what it meant to wear these boots and wield a weapon. Although none of this seemed familiar, I did recall images from past lives, that were accompanied by feelings of dread but also the honor.

Maybe these were just distorted figments of my imagination, but in the moment there was nothing more I could have wished for, but the distant thunder of gunfire or the sirens of a forward base. Any sign of life, and let it be the enemy, would have settled my mind so much more than the dismal silence that had fallen on this world. Even my own footsteps were muffled and voiced little more than a thud. Thick layers of ash made it impossible to produce a sharp clank or creak, that would have been so relieving to my senses.

As things stood, the ragged being in the ditch was the only thing even loosely resembling life in this world, as far as my eyes could reach.

With a strained huff, I leaned against my newly found staff and patted down my pockets. To examine myself seemed like a logical first step and I now was certain, that I could not hope for help. Little was to be found between layers of cloth and ripped ornamentation on the coat. At least, I managed to tear away few stripes of relatively untouched fabric, to pat down my cheeks and wounds, as best I could. Even without higher knowledge of biology and the plights of a wounded soldier, I craved a flask of alcohol, to cleanse the wounds and ease my mind.

For what it was worth, I was still growing restless, unwilling to stay in the ditch any longer. But the view of the greater world revealed, that walking on a barefoot would not be an option. Vicious traps and debris aside, the distance alone would cost me my foot and last chance to reach the auspicious light.

Trying to secure the lower half of my jackboot would have been comical, if not for the ruptured edge where metal teeth should have broken every bone in my foot. Several times I fastened the knots of the makeshift strap that I created from torn cloth. What was left, a  short piece of fabric without any use for myself, I threw at the thing sitting between torn metal, that I fended off with my staff once in a while. The vicious creature growled at me but stayed away for now.

In the light of a world so empty and dark, I did spend considerable time watching the thing move, waiting for my guard to go down. My mind was set at ease a little bit when I learned, that at least this specimen seemed incapable of flight, its stubby wings good for little more than appearing larger than it was. I was wondering if I could eat it, but the beanpole thin body would have been little more than a way for me to choke myself.

After I finally managed to secure my boots, time first came to my mind. How long did I spend standing up? It certainly felt like hours could have passed and every bone in my body was screaming for sleep. But the light on the horizon hadn't moved at all. The shadows were static and no clouds in the sky indicated any wind. The world, it seemed, was frozen and I had no way to measure the passage of time.

I escaped from the ditch at some point after my pain became bearable. Having gathered all strips of cloth, a sharp splinter of metal and what was left of empty leather bags, I climbed a waist-deep slope and set my path towards the light.

Step  - step – step – breath.

Something wasn't right about the air that filled this world. Devoid of any and all water, it drained my reserves and burned my lungs. My tongue was just a shriveled clump in my mouth that tasted like the dust surrounding me.

After what felt like an hour of steady marching, my mind had become accustomed to the idea that I did no longer walk the face of my earth. Despite all horror infused with that thought, it was more consolidating than to think that such destruction could have struck the world I knew. Memories were still flashing before my eyes when looking down on the lost graveyard, that I had come to understand as some sort of battlefield. I had learned to see things hidden beneath a layer of ash, that seemingly enveloped anything and everything. To a degree, I was thankful for this blackish dust, as it obscured most of the horrific and strange shapes.

The ditch where I had awoken was the smallest offshoot of a network of trenches, that stretched seemingly forever. For a while, I followed in their path, unwilling to risk the no mans land, that was prone for traps and wire. But soon I understood that these fields did not adhere to rules as they were in my minds recollection. I doubted my own understanding just as much as my memory and the world I was in. Nothing about this place was more trustworthy than my own, seemingly twisted mind.

The trenches were too deep and often descended into gaping maws of tunnels, that I did not dare to enter. Strange odors rose from there, of chemical substances and bubbling dark broth. I saw, what would have amounted to entrenchments to any knowledgeable soul. But therein were wrecked contraptions of such shapes that made no sense to me, with coils of brass and orbs of ceramic, that faced outward instead of barrels. Think strands of metallic ropes and wires led from these machines to massive conduits beneath the soil, that reminded me eerily of anatomical studies and veins beneath the skin.

In the end, it was my unwilling companion that persuaded me to leave my path. The crow-like creature did refuse to go any closer to the things that elevated themselves from the ground by invisible, humming force. I hastily left these entrenchments behind and kept the creature closer, that seemed strangely attracted to the bending form of my staff, if not myself.

Outside of the trenches, I saw none of the horrors commonly associated with a war, at least not in the form that I expected. The decision whether or not to take provisions and boots from fallen comrades I was spared, as there were no bodies of any human form to be found.

Although I need correct myself, that is not entirely true. But I cannot discuss or honestly say what I saw in the shape of a human arm, that rose at least fifteen feet high and was enveloped in such a rotting stench that I did not dare approach it any further.  Whatever its shape, it was certainly not human.

There were no human bodies but carcasses of machines that appeared unethically organic in their shapes and form. Some of them seemed almost humanoid at first glance, but their heads were elongated shapes of geometric form. Cuboids and prisms, forged from unknown metal and with no orifices of any kind. Instead, markings and unknown runes were drawn in the runny paint on their sides and washed away by mucus and oil. Their bodies, too large to be human, were skewed and overstretched. Springs and rods like cleanly picked bones were facing outward and pierced rough armor that was left by scavenging beasts.

Without a doubt, the crow on my side was not the only of its kind. I was on a constant lookout for movement but had yet to decide whether I would flee or seek out the first sign of life other than my own. But much like my goal, I had little choice in the matter. As I stumbled onward, the little swish of the crow-thing was never far behind.

Ash began to fall sometime after I had left the trenches. Flakes of burnt material, so fragile that they disappeared to the slightest touch, slowly tumbled down in the still air. I risked a look above, but no clouds were to be seen. Maybe, so I hoped, a high blanket of clouds was just concealed by shadows. With what little fantasy this place had left me with, I could almost imagine it being snow. The flakes themselves were almost white, but turned gray and then black, as soon as the touched the ground. Few I managed to catch in a delirious effort or false hope that they'd melt into water. Alas, it was nothing but dust and I grew weary of them, as they got into my nose and throat with every breath.

What could be burning in a place such as this, with no bodies to be found, I didn't want to know.

“O God, hear us in thy righteousness and vouchsafe of thy holiness…” I held the hazel rod up as if presenting it to the godhead I was praying to. The twenty-six inches of long dried wood rested lightly in my hand as I recited Another Prayer to double-consecrate the introduced tool during the preparatory phase of the ritual.

The unyielding bark still held a hint of green amid the yellows and tans that developed from years of rest. The rod felt empty. An empty vessel not yet ready to be filled. I laid it in the circle at my feet. The slightly bowed rod turned as gravity pulled it from my hand. The sound was much like a fallen pencil.

Yesterday I had learned that the epithet “Cados” likely came from the Hebrew word “kadosh”, meaning “holy”. So the phrase “in the name of God, Cados, Cados, Cados…” was the same as saying “in the name of God, Holy, Holy, Holy…”. This morning I learned that the phrase “holy holy holy” is a trigger for me, regardless of language, when intoned in prayer.

I paused involuntarily as I suddenly lost my breath and unsummoned fear froze my spine. Memories I had tried to forget twisted with memories recalled into being as the history of the circumstances I would most likely have heard or spoken these words warned me that cruelty was about to be revisited onto me.

The weight of the pewter amulet on my neck reminded me of where and when I am. I took a deep breath, forced myself to look around and note all the things that were not present then, lifted the thin brown book with severe solemnity, and began the conjuration most necessary again in defiance.

«Open your eyes. The rod has no substance here, not yet. Pick it up and examine it. You cannot use it in its current length. You have enough for three wands if you cut them short. Two wands if you cut the rod in half. Or one specific rod if you desire a certain length from the midst of it. You only need one.»

I had opened my eyes immediately. I continued to “hear” him clearly even as I did as instructed. I was amused to see the physical amber was not unnaturally glowing and the candle was not lit yet I could somehow feel the light and warmth just the same as I felt his presence across the table.

My perfectionism was holding me back again. While the Book of Oberon had references to hazel wands for two specific rituals, there was no other information about wands in particular. A checking of websites gave instruction that the hazel wand should be fifteen to seventeen inches, or should be the length of the forearm plus the hand, or should be the length of the forearm only, or et cetera, et cetera, ad nauseam. I only have one chance to do this right, so I am afraid to do anything at all.

“Okay. Let’s assume I’m able to make an executive decision and trim the length to something… appropriate. Then what?”

«Close your eyes, and I will show you.»

I had held the rod upright with my right hand as I spoke. When he began speaking after I closed my eyes, I realized I had just fulfilled a vision I had three weeks ago as I prepared for this undertaking.

I did not see the other-world version of the table, shewstones, and candle. I did not see [Patient Caller] or his rings. I saw myself seated at a worktable with a trimmed section of the hazel rod and an assortment of rasps, sandpapers, cloths, and oil. With the rasp, my alternate self removed the hardest outer layer of bark. With the sandpaper, just enough of the inner layer of bark was removed to reveal the wood itself. Finer and finer grades were used to smooth out the surface before being wiped clean with the cloths and smothered from one end to the other with olive oil.

«You will need to feed the wand for at least a day after shaping it before presenting and using it. You will need to feed it regularly after. Do you understand what I mean by feeding it?»

As he spoke, the secondary vision ended. I looked down to see the hazel rod resting in my lap. I looked up to see him seated across the table. “If it’s like [my other wand], it’s covering it with olive oil, letting it soak for a while, then wiping off the excess and buffing what remains.”

«Yes. Use the first press of olive oil, and take care that it is pure olive oil. The oil and your attention is what feeds the wand and converts it from a dog’s chew toy into an effective tool.»

When he fell silent, I turned my attention back to the rod. I noted where my hand was comfortable holding it and which way I tended to turn the curve of the shaft. The spirit watched me for a moment with his hands clasped and resting on the table as I have become accustomed to. I had no warning that he was about to speak.

I didn’t realize I had held my breath until I found myself unable to speak the thick obscenities clogging my mouth.

My mouth was dry but at least I was able to speak. He had spoken the last three words with an intonation that demanded a response. He lifted a hand to indicate it was now my turn to speak.

“Holy is the Lord.” My tongue felt and tasted like it was coated in rust.

«There are other passages in the [Book of Oberon] that call upon the name and names of the Most High God. Read them. Out loud. Not for ritual and not for intent. But to feel the names upon your tongue again. To hear your voice speak with strength and vigor and surety. To pull those portions of you that [spoke with eloquence] out of the bonds of memories twisted by the intentional evil of some and the unintentional cruelty of others. If you cannot speak without your spirit faltering in fear, not even the amulet will help you.»

I did not argue.

I spoke the Apophenia Invitation and the License to Depart without issue. Reciting Psalm 54 once more to secure my safety before breaking the circle was like licking galvanized nails. It was hard to focus on the words. Hard to visualize what they meant. Hard to accept their intent. I kept reminding myself of [Mud] and the difficulties I had peeling him off of me in my ignorance.

Only when all else was put away did I remove the amulet. As the cord passed my ears, I felt like I was removing a helmet, the world pressed itself into my awareness, and the clock announced that I was running late.

Total ritual time: 45 minutes.

This stopped being entertaining last week. I’m all the more determined to complete the thirty day commitment. I spoke with a peer about some of my more obvious fears in working with [Patient Caller] yesterday. A key concern is that I feel I am very clearly being groomed for something but that I have no idea what that something is or why.

Because reasons, I am very sure that [Patient Caller] was formerly incarnate. I don’t want to use so base a word as “ghost”, but once upon a time, he belched and shat just like the rest of us living. Which means [Patient Caller] is a “dead wizard with agendas”.

This is not helping my paranoia.

But so far, all the information checks out. I am finding confirmations and precedents for his instructions, warnings, and advice. He has not asked me to do anything that would put me in harm’s way. Even the intentional triggering, as sharp and painful as it was to endure it at the time, was to brace me and prepare me for an even stronger shaking so I would not fall when it comes.

All my checks and divinations still encourage me to continue. Those I have sought advice from before remind me that they are still within reach if I need help. My allegiances have not changed. I’m okay.

Okay.

I’ll be making a 15″ cut of the rod. That feels a little too long, but I can always sand it shorter if the balance doesn’t work out right. I can’t lengthen what is cut.

I know how incongruent this sounds. I lay out the reasons why I should not do the thing, then turn around and resolutely decide to do the thing.

What can I say? I want to know more.

THE RAGE OF TEESTA

This is part fact, part fiction. I know this happened. I was there. But I don’t remember anything of what did happen. I went back to the house once when young and recalled nothing. And don’t even now recall much of that place from that visit. So, this is a mostly imaginary reconstruction from snatches of conversation, from some retelling from a very long time back that created its own impressions.

October 2018, 50 years later, I started writing this reconstruction using imagination. Maybe it happened this way, maybe it did not. But the end was the same. And set us on a journey like many in similar situation would have, touching so many more lives, sacrifices from so many people whose lives we invaded. So, here’s the story. A tribute to my father. And a note in history for those to follow.

And the picture, soon after the floods when we were on our way to Ajmer for what turned out to be all the growing years with my Pishi and Pishamoshai – my father’s sister and husband. In the process, having another father figure whose values I seem to have imbibed. That story, another day.

There was a strange stillness to the night. He woke from his sleep, his subconscious possibly nudged by sounds it was not used to. Like the lapping of water. Or maybe pieces of metal gently knocking together. As he reached for the light, it wouldn’t come on. But his eyes got adjusted to the dark. And a cold dread seized his heart. There was water gently rising on the floor. Pots and pans and assorted light furniture floated lazily around. Even as he watched, he saw the water rising by the passing minute.

At 5’11, he was tall and wide, filled with strength that came naturally with that frame. He rushed from window to window, trying to check any space that allowed for an exit. The household had come to life. The two kids, one had turned two and the other had turned four in June. His wife, of slender build, had started moving valuables out of the way of the water. His younger brother, suffering from acute schizophrenia, sat listlessly watching the water rise.

Was it hours, was it minutes, but he knew that they were not just marooned but the water would rise and engulf them all soon. The mighty Teesta had breached despite the high earth bund that separated the house from the raging tributary of the Brahmaputra. It was October 4, turning to October 5, and in the annals of Indian floods, it would go down in the history as the highest flooding ever.

But he did not know that. All that he knew as the rising water crept up the leg of the bed in the dark night and furniture started floating that the water would cover the low lying house within the hour. Marshalling the whole family on the bed first, he desperately looked for a way out. Opening the doors would bring in the full force of the water and sweep away his wife and kids and even maybe his brother whose state of apathy was such that he would put up little resistance to the swirling waters.

As the water rose swiftly, there was only one way out. He had to move the family to the roof, and quickly. The single storied house had a roof made of galvanized sheets and no stairs to a terrace. Across the blackness of the yard, he could make out, through the suffused light of a full moon covered by clouds, the high storied building which housed the kitchen and had a concrete roof well above the reach of the water.

With a retrieved hammer and metal rod, he clambered atop the steel almirah and began hammering away at the galvanized sheets, trying to break them loose from their moorings. Blow after blow after blow fell on the unyielding tin roof. Still in his lungi and banyian, sweat poured while he relentlessly pounded away. He looked down to see his wife had put the kids atop the wooden chest and held on to them. The waters had crested the top of the beds and were still rising. His brother sat listlessly on the bed watching without reacting as the waters lapped around his folded knees. He resumed his assault with increasing desperation till, finally, the tin sheets gave way, torn from their moorings and yet resistant. With bare hands he now grasped the edges. As they cut into his hands he folded them to his will, bit by bloody bit till they allowed first a fist hold and then a hand hold and then a bit more. With a final push, one sheet surrendered and toppled over.

He jumped on the bed where the water had climbed to his knees. His brother stood, grasping a little the dire situation. Who should he send up first? His wife wouldn’t go up without the kids but the kids themselves wouldn’t be safe if they were there by themselves. His brother would have to be the first one up. Through the rafters, he cajoled his brother up on to the roof. The water was now rushing into the house, possibly having tamed a door or window. He hurried to first send up the elder boy, all of 4, while his wife held on to the younger one. The pressure of the water bore on them as he came off the top of one cupboard clutching the child. He grasped his wife, no more than a slender stick, and propelled mother and child against the force of the water till he had them atop the other almirah right below the open roof. The water had now risen to his chest as he put her on his shoulder and levered them through the gap in the roof. As the mother extended the younger one to the waiting hands of the brother, the child slipped through the hands and fell. The falling two year old however had extended his hands in reflex and grasped the bare rafters and hung on. With a quick heave the dangling child was plucked out of the waters and handed back to the roof. And then the father climbed on to the roof.

He looked around. There were few houses around and those that were had disappeared under water. He sat on the roof, recovering his breath. Giving his stretched muscles a rest. The children were cold, clinging to their mother for warmth. He gingerly walked on the slippery sloped roof, hoping to find a place from where he could reach the high storied kitchen. His brother could swim but would have to be guided through lest he went adrift by the strange workings of his mind. Which meant he would now have to make three trips across that fast flowing water – a few hundred yards but in the crazy push of water, as difficult as crossing a river in full spate.

There was no time to lose. Grasping his brother’s hand he jumped into the water and with, some encouragement from the rushing waters, made it to the terrace of the kitchen with strong strokes. Hurriedly pushing the still passive fellow up on to the terrace, he jumped back into the waters. And, suddenly, he realized that the journey back would be a fight against the mighty river flowing in the opposite direction. With each stroke, he would move forward only to be relentlessly pushed back and away. The few yards became more as the force of the river kept pushing him back and away from both the houses. Gasping with pain, fear and short of breath, he kept his eyes firmly on the huddled wife and children perched precariously atop the tiled roof watching his struggle to make it back. As he swam and swam, his mind kept working on the different angles that would help cut the force of the tide and give him some relief from the relentless push of the fast moving currents. Pushed back, over and over again, he suddenly got relief when the flowing waters pushed him onto a log and then the shield of the house that gave a bit of a respite from the currents. He quickly steered the log towards the house, keeping it between himself and the currents. Where the journey with his brother was but a handful of minutes, the journey back was well over a quarter of an hour.

He had little time to lose. His wife, looking faint and weak, passed the two children to him. He had them both perch on the log while holding on to him and propelled the log back towards the high storied house. He had to be more careful. Neither child was big enough to swim and one slip, one misstep and they would be lost for ever. A hand around each child, he pushed the log and dog paddled desperately towards the kitchen. The currents, mercifully, were back in favour and boosted his progress but away from the house. Thrashing with an arm, exhorting the kids to hold on, taking deep breaths, he swam as he had never swum before. His lungs were ready to burst. His arms falling off in pain and strain, he swam on. Pushing the two children into the hands of his brother, he collapsed on the terrace. Panting, gasping, he lay on the terrace for long minutes recovering his breath, his strength. He knew he was in no shape to make the journey back to get his wife until he recovered enough. With deep breaths, he tried to get his breath back. He told his kids to keep speaking to their mother over the rush of the waters so she knew he was coming back. Quarter of an hour later, he was ready to make the journey back.

He plunged back into the murky water, now cluttered with household junk from many houses around that had given up their more buoyant artefacts. He could make some of them out as they floated past like little boats. An occasional floating chest divested of its innards would suddenly block his way. Somehow, the current seemed stronger. Or was he just too tired to make it back. Just a quarter way across and he felt he should turn back and surrender to the inexorable drag of the sharp current. And yet something kept him going. He would stop and tread water, every time pushed back a few feet. The wind picked up from time to time, buffeting. He did not know how long it took him but he finally reached and clambered up the slippery slope of the tin roof. Cutting and maiming his hands, collapsed gasping for a long time.

Many deep breaths later, he called out to his wife.

There was no response.
