four ladies and some power tools

After Pig Roast, as we waited for final building approval from the Park, University of Alabama, and the represented Native American tribes, we jumped head first into detailing and learning the ins and outs of Enercalc, a structural engineering software, to go over with our consultant Joe Farrugia.

As we continued to study and make decisions on the aesthetics of the visible structure, we were also able to check and balance the structural requirements based off of the loads we recieved from Enercalc. These loads factored in the weight of structure, environmental factors (rain, wind, a small snow load, etc.), and structural qualities of Southern Pine lumber, our building material.

We built 1:1 mockups of possible footing details, looking at multiple factors such as column profile, distance from the bottom of the wood to ground, steel profile, steel width, bolt placement, and screw type and distribution. We spray painted plywood to represent the actual steel which will be galvanized (this actually tricked quite a few classmates that swore it was steel when they first saw them).

Once approval came in, we kicked July off with the craziest batter board set-up we’ve seen in our short careers. We laid out the roof outline first to ensure that we located the pavilion perfectly within the site. However, since our structure is all on a diagonal we pulled a skewed rectangle based off of the first truss line to locate all of the column footings accurately. After 3 days of fighting with the site’s hard dirt and building “extra” reinforced batter boards, we were successfully able to mark out all concrete foundations and have them dug with rebar placed ready for the pour the following week.

And within a week, we had our concrete footings!!

Concurrently, we ran the numbers on the structure and accurately spec’d each connection for the columns and trusses (we’re waiting for our structural engineering degrees, any day now). Once everything was 100% Joe-approved, we presented to Jim Turnipseed of Turnipseed International Steel who graciously provided all of our threaded rod, washers, nuts, and splice plates!

And viola, three weeks later and we have 5 beautiful trusses and 12 columns built and ready to be moved to site (column pictures to come)! Somewhere during that time we also squeezed in design work progressing the paving under the pavilion and we got our steel feet back from Turnipseed International and Super Metal Works here in Newbern.

TUNA TUESDAY

I believe for a lot of us who come from a conventional blue water background one of the main bucket list fish to put in that bucket is a tuna on the fly rod.

There are a few hurdles that need to be cleared.  Some hurdles are  straight forward like picking up the appropriate gear which can easily be settled with a credit card. Other aspects like getting out to the tuna grounds can be a bit more abusive to said credit card which for the most part means owning your own boat or friends with someone who owns a private boat.  The last but not least route is by private charter or a guided trip. Way, way, way off the normal path was a season you could have actually paddled from shore with a chance at going for a tuna sleigh ride...

For gear a fast 12wt  is pretty standard but if you spend most of your time targeting tuna then you can easily add some specialty bluewater rods to your quiver. 12 weights are easily castable for most folks who are used to handling bigger sticks and have the skills to shoot a decent loop without endangering themselves or the others around you. Besides having a solid double haul your ability to fire a cast on your backhand is something you should be comfortable doing as well.  If you have never thrown a big bluewater stick I would highly recommend putting in the time to practice. It’s a huge jump going from an 8wt and 300 grain to a 12wt with a 550-grain head.  That said, not every tuna you encounter is going to need the heavy gear to get the job done.  The fish third from the bottom on this page was one of the several we pulled off a kelp paddy and I was having fun using a 7wt.

The bluewater game is finally the appropriate time to covet a good saltwater fly reel.  One of the features you are going to want to have to chase tuna is a mid to large arbor reel. I would specify a excellent drag as well but most capable reels these days have great drags. Fly guys like to brag about drag so the poor designs get outed online so scroll those reviews.   If you drop some good cash on a reel it’s going to be well made, sealed and have good line pick up.  The biggest fluctuating option you will have to consider is going to be what weight the reel is and I’m talking about actual weight.  Take for example a 12wt Galvan Torque is one of the lighter bluewater reels at only 8.6 ounces.  Compare this to a Hatch 12wt that comes in at over 14 ounces.  

Fly lines should be matched appropriately to the rod wt and be of a fast sink type unless you are throwing a crease fly.  I have a 550-grain big game fast sink fly line on my 12 wt and it works great. 

As far as strategy goes... if the fish are boiling around the boat and willing to eat the fly there’s not much strategy involved just get your line overboard start stripping and get ready to hang on.  There’s one huge consideration when fly fishing for tuna and that’s managing your loose line that’s on the deck of the boat.

Have your line flaked out so it does not catch on anything or use a casting bucket because if you screw this up it’s all going to end in tears.  Also, make sure when you do get bit to help guide your line off the deck onto your reel. 

When the fish are not eating the paint off the boat move to the  bow and try cast as much line in the same direction as the wind and if need be dump all the remaining fly line overboard. Now crack a beer and relax while you let your line sink out.  As the boat drifts forward walk your rod to the stern. Your line will sink below the boat and drift until it is behind the boat.  When your line gets to about a 45-degrees angle from your rod tip start stripping!  Depending on where you are metering fish you can either strip all the way back to the boat and repeat the process or you may want to strip it only part of the way. There is also a method of simply twitching the fly a few strips and that can be very effective too.  All this is done with the appropriate chum line and an eye on the meter.  This works best with fish hanging in that 30′ zone.

Biden to Pick Kamala Harris

LOS ANGELES (OnlineColumnist.com), July 29, 2020.--All the drama surrounding 77-year-old former Vice President and Democrat presumptive nominee Joe Biden’s pick for a running mate, comes down to a no-brainer, something Team Biden has known for months.  When Biden announces his pick next week, it will be 55-year-old Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.), no question about it.  Harris, a U.S. Senator, former California Atty  Gen. and Democrat candidate, gave Biden more than he asked for June 27, 2019 in Miami at NBC’s Democrat primary debate.  Harris accused Joe of insensitivity for his amicable relationships with segregationists Sen. James Eastland (D-Miss.) and Herman Talmadge (D-Ga.)..  Harris showed Joe firsthand she’s ready for a fight, not afraid to speak her mind especially on topics she feels passionate about.  With the current racial justice protests around the country, no one’s better than Kamala to lead the charge.     

        Whether admitted to or not, Biden’s not picking Harris because she’s part East Indian and Jamaican, a person of color, it’s because she’s charismatic, articulate and passionate for what she believes.  Kamala’s rabidly anti-Trump, something most of Joe’s possible running mates agree on, but Kamala can pull it off with cold, calculated logic, just what Joe experienced when he debated her in Miami.  Kamala’s presentation is eerily similar as a female counterpart to former President Barack Obama, with whom Joe spent eight years as vice president.  Without serving with Barack, Joe would be just an ordinary older white guy running for president.  Obama gave Joe his credibility with the African American voters to serve the community’s many political and social interests.  With today’s racial tensions, Kamala’s the perfect compromise between the white, black and  communities of color.      

       Joe found out firsthand how Kamala can present her case, honed from years refining her craft as San Francisco’s District Attorney from 2004 to 2011, then becoming California’s Atty. Gen. from 2011 to 2017, winning former Sen. Barbara Boxer’s senate seat Jan. 3, 2017.  By anyone’s account, Harris is a rising star in the Democrat Party, despite a hiccup when she bombed out of the Democrat Primary Dec. 3, 2019, largely because as young woman of color was not seen as a viable presidential candidate with the likes of 77-year-old Joe Bidem. 71-year-old Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) and 78-year-old Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).  But Kamala made a splash in the campaign when she went tete a tete with Joe in Miami.  Knowing what Biden faces in the last three months of the 2020 campaign, he has no better partner than Kamala to get him over the finish line Nov. 3.      

        Former Sen. Christopher Dodd (D-Conn.) who’s been vetting Joe’s shortlist of  possible running mates, including  55-year-old former National Security Adviser Susan Rice,  66-year-old Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), 52-year-old Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Il.), 50-year-old Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, 71-year-old Sen. Elizabeth Warrant (D-Mass.), 60-year-old New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham (D-N.M.), and 48-year-old Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer (D-Mich.), thinks Harris hasn’t apologized for going after Biden in Miami.  Instead of apologizing, Dodd should thank Kamala for auditioning for running mate months before Joe locked up the nomination.  When you look at the field, there’s simply no competition for Kamala, when it comes experience and outright talent.  Only Warren has the experience and talent to make the final cut, but she’s not a person of color.    

         When you look at former Obama  National Security Adviser Susan Rice, she carries so much baggage from the Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn and “Obamagate” saga, she’d be a lightening rod for unwanted controversy.  Biden has enough controversy with the Ukraine brouhaha where he landed his 50-year-old son Hunger an $83,000 a months job on corruption-plagued Burisma Holdings board.  Hunter admitted to ABC’s Good Morning America Oct. 15, 2019 that it was not the best judgment to accept the job.  Rice, who admitted to “unmasking” conversations between Flynn and former Russian Amb. Sergey Kislyak, would open up a can of worms for Biden.  When it comes to Rep. Val Demings (D-Fl.) she offers Joe nothing special, other than her four-year stint as Orlando Police Chief.  Demings upped her profile serving as an impeachment manager before Trump’s acquittal Feb. 5.   

          When you look at Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), head of Black Caucus, she favors reparations for African Americans, something that could galvanize votes for Trump in the next three months.  Even Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-Il), a decorated Iraq War Veteran who lost her leg in co-piloting a helicopter Nov. 12, 2004, offers Biden little in terms to getting him key voting blocks.  Illinois is not a battleground state, offering Biden no immediate or long-term benefits.   When you look at what Kamala brings to the table, there’s no comparison with any of Joe’s choices.  Kamala brings all the necessary experience and talent to prosecute a tough case against Trump in the final three months of the campaign.  None of Biden’s other choices have a background from the nation’s most populous state.  Kamala’s a prime-time, headline candidate, ready to compete at the highest level for the nation’s biggest political prize.

But I cannot discuss or honestly say what I saw in the shape of a human arm, that rose at least fifteen feet high and was enveloped in such a rotting stench that I did not dare approach it any further.  Whatever its shape, it was certainly not human.

There were no human bodies but carcasses of machines that appeared unethically organic in their shapes and form. Some of them seemed almost humanoid at first glance, but their heads were elongated shapes of geometric form. Cuboids and prisms, forged from unknown metal and with no orifices of any kind. Instead, markings and unknown runes were drawn in the runny paint on their sides and washed away by mucus and oil. Their bodies, too large to be human, were skewed and overstretched. Springs and rods like cleanly picked bones were facing outward and pierced rough armor that was left by scavenging beasts.

Without a doubt, the crow on my side was not the only of its kind. I was on a constant lookout for movement but had yet to decide whether I would flee or seek out the first sign of life other than my own. But much like my goal, I had little choice in the matter. As I stumbled onward, the little swish of the crow-thing was never far behind.

Ash began to fall sometime after I had left the trenches. Flakes of burnt material, so fragile that they disappeared to the slightest touch, slowly tumbled down in the still air. I risked a look above, but no clouds were to be seen. Maybe, so I hoped, a high blanket of clouds was just concealed by shadows. With what little fantasy this place had left me with, I could almost imagine it being snow. The flakes themselves were almost white, but turned gray and then black, as soon as the touched the ground. Few I managed to catch in a delirious effort or false hope that they'd melt into water. Alas, it was nothing but dust and I grew weary of them, as they got into my nose and throat with every breath.

What could be burning in a place such as this, with no bodies to be found, I didn't want to know.
