We often find ourselves craving inspirational insights to help us better manage our spaces. Though, superficial aspects of interior designing are often the focal points – what about the sturdy structures like structural steel sheds that often remain ignored? Could it perhaps be the perception that these structures are designed to weather all turbulences? Could it be because they are considered strictly utilitarian, leaving no room for visual appeal, or the assumed simplicity of their maintenance?

Can Metal-made Industrial Sheds for Sale Save Time and Money?
In today's Australia, well-established businesses prefer industrial sheds for sale in commercial or industrial needs. Some Australian metal structure providers have earned a reputation for decades by constructing home, rural, and industrial sites such as big industrial buildings, infrastructure, bridges, airport terminals, heavy industrial facilities, and more.
In addition, when someone needs metal sheds for small businesses like garages or carports, they will typically find a variety of pre-engineered buildings made of metal structures, including factories, warehouses, workshops, community halls, commercial showrooms, commercial exhibitions, cold storage, stadiums, parking sheds, railway platforms, and so on.
In general, the trend of creating metal structures is growing and has become the ultimate building need due to the benefits stated here.
People looking for low-cost, high-quality metal structures for a short-term facility can find sturdy yet lightweight materials such as specialist C/Z shed structure frames from reputable steel structure providers in Melbourne.
Advantages of Installing Industrial-grade Metal Sheds:
Many businesses want their structures to be operational with as little downtime as possible. Well-known steel structure manufacturers produce steel based on the requirements and types of construction.
They also prioritise giving their innovative skills to make the building flexible and simple to operate and oversee each of their productive operations effectively.
These vendors provide structurally galvanised, high-quality RHS frame steel to ensure structural safety. They stock structural steel for fixing gutters and wall sheets, as well as completely welded and bolted frames with thick fascia for a variety of applications. They also stock structural steel for all types of metal buildings in Australia.
How to Select Reliable Steel Construction Suppliers?
Find reputable steel construction suppliers for a successful building project.
People can analyse their track record, and read reviews, testimonials, and case studies.
Verify their credentials and compliance with industry standards to ensure the quality of materials and workmanship.
Experience is always important, so look for vendors with a track record in steel building.
Analyse other important aspects to consider including competitive pricing and quote transparency.
Finally, carefully evaluate these factors to select a dependable and experienced steel construction supplier to match the project's needs and expectations.

Panopticon House in Cape Otway, Victoria
25 Sep 2020
Panopticon House
Architects: Bild Architecture
Location: Cape Otway, Victoria, Australia
The Panopticon House project is a hybrid of modernist and classical rural villa ideals, exploring the house as figured object versus the disappearing enclosure. Located in rural Victoria, on a prominent hilltop with panoramic views across the surrounding landscape, the Great Southern Ocean, Bass Strait and the Tasman Ocean. The site and program recall the classical villa however a key element of the client brief was to minimize interruption to the views of the surrounding landscape. The house was in effect to become a device for seeing out – a ‘Panopticon’, whose primary function was that of observation.
Jeremy Bentham’s original 18th century Panopticon has been used as a model for a wide range of institutional buildings, including the reading room of the Victorian State library. However, was latter criticized by Michel Foucault and others as mechanism for manifesting and reinforcing power imbalances. In the context however, the relationship between the observer/observed, is that between architecture/landscape, emphasizing the potential of architecture as a device for seeing.
This desire recalls the Farnsworth house, itself arguably a continuation of the classical villa tradition – however with the critical departure of the introduction of the ‘free plan’ into the villa type and the ambition of dissolving the relationship between interiority and exteriority. Located on the highest point on the site, the Panopticon House adopts these strategies, elongating and folding the free plan back on itself to provide panoramic views in all directions, while capturing a central courtyard providing shelter from prevailing winds on the exposed site.
The pure geometries of the plan, a repeating square figure of the 20x20m square plan, 10x10m square courtyard and offset square of the south-western terraces, recalls the geometric explorations of the neo-classical ideal, while exhibiting traces of bi-axial symmetry both recalling and departing from this tradition. The form of the house and the undulating folding roof, is produced by extruding view lines from key strategic points in the surrounding landscape of to a single panoptic point within the courtyard, producing compression/expansion in section to provide spatial articulation within the free plan, introducing implied rooms and directing the gaze to keys views of the landscape beyond the building.
The house does not seek to blend with the site or be ‘part’ of the landscape – it is consciously a figured object in the field, like the classical villa and the local vernacular of the rural shed. The form of the Panopticon House hints at an aggregation of gable shed forms – suggesting a linkage to this venular language while departing from it. The project negotiates being seen and the seeing from as a point of departure, hybridising classical and modernist villa typologies to produce a novel third type that negotiates viewing to and viewing from in as a balanced conceptual counterpoint.
From the outset the project looked to emulate the robust language of Australian rural/industrial shed typologies, providing a long term, robust building suited to its rural setting. To reflect this a simple and durable pallet of off-form concrete, galvanised steel, fibre cement sheeting and Sheet metal roofing was adopted. The project’s primary structure is a series of radiating galvanised steel portal frames, which are exposed within the glazed walls as columns supporting galvanised steel windows/doors. Hot dip galvanised steel, provides a durable finish requiring minimal maintenance, developing a patina over time, while withstanding the extreme environmental conditions on site.
The project demonstrates a range of innovative sustainability strategies, that with input key technical consultants moved beyond tick-box solutions and tackle engagement with sustainability both with the broader context and with detailed measurable outcomes. The sites history as a patrol lease had led to extensive deforestation, the project served as a catalyst for reforestation of the site; In partnership with the Local chapter of Landcare, in excess of 25 000 Manna Gum and Messmate Eucalypt trees have been planted across the site. Providing expanded range for vulnerable endemic flora and fauna, and critically connects up remnant stands of original forest, enabling wildlife corridors throughout and across the site. The stitching together of these corridors leverages the benefits of the project beyond its immediate site and into the surrounding district.
The building is 100% off grid with a 30Kw PV solar array + battery bank, with a 3kw wind turbine to be installed latter in the year. As a glass house in an Australian climate, thermal comfort was carefully considered. Every room allows cross venting, sliding door on are adjusted by a few centimetres to control air flow and the temperature internally the resident note that living in the house is like sailing a ship, and it has taken time to learn and to master.
The house is equipped with AC, however it has seen limited use and on the hottest days, the PC array generates more power than can be consumed by the HVAC system. When in operation the house is 100% carbon neutral. If the tree planting program is considered the project overall is Carbon Negative, to a reduction in carbon emissions of the equivalent of 3.5 x the average Australian houses.
The Panopticon House project negotiates modernist and classical rural villa ideals, exploring the house as figured object versus the disappearing enclosure, to produce a novel third type that negotiates viewing to and viewing from in as a balanced conceptual counterpoint.

Marnie and Ryan Hawson attended numerous house inspections when they were looking to buy in 2011, but this 1890s property in Riddells Creek, a town in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, was the only one that ticked all the boxes. ‘We were attracted to it because of its soul, quirks, character and history. These are always the things I look for in a house – that certain something that makes you feel like it’s a home,’ says Marnie. The couple were hoping to move in before their wedding in March, so when the real estate agent was closed for Christmas, they took matters into their own hands. Marnie recalls, ‘We actually knocked on the door and said we wanted to buy the house. It then went to a blind bidding war between us and another couple, and we won!’
Despite having been here now for nine years (!) it’s only recently that Marnie and Ryan have undertaken minor renovations. At the heart of these update is a 50-year-old AGA oven, sourced 18 months ago. ‘Friends and family donated to an AGA wedding gift fund, so it is very special. It just took us eight years to find the right one!’ says Marnie. The kitchen has been refurbished around this oven and features existing cabinetry, brass elements and a vintage Czech galvanised washing tub that’s been repurposed as a sink.
Also on the property is a separate, small weatherboard building, which was formerly the town’s post office! With the help of Belle Hemming Bright, Marnie and Ryan recently converted this space into a cosy private bar nicknamed the ‘Misses Sutherlands‘ – an homage to the two sisters who once lived in the home, and ran the post office for 50 years.
Another nod to the property’s history are the hundreds of original post office boxes dotted around the home. These boxes were purchased from the local post office for the price of scrap metal, and now store everything from bottles of wine, to cleaning products and shoes. ‘The problem is remembering where we put each item!’ says Marnie.
The styling of the house stays true to Marnie’s values, showcasing classic, well designed pieces that will stand the test of time. ‘I’d rather buy once and buy well, to have something for life,’ she explains. ‘Everywhere I can, I support businesses who value natural materials, ethical workmanship, and sustainable practices. I also love to buy vintage items, as I think that most things are better with age and a good story.’ Tying the rooms together is an almost uniform use of Dulux Antique White USA, layered with simple, natural tones and materials.
The most recent project the couple have undertaken is ripping out their lawn and completely redoing the front yard. Designed by Kathleen Murphy Landscape Design, and installed by Macedon Ranges Garden Services, this garden will eventually blossom into a wild, bee-friendly, and drought tolerant area, with native grasses and rock water bowls for birds.
Marnie and Ryan love the location of their house, that provides an idyllic country lifestyle just 45 minutes from Melbourne. ‘The best thing about the town is the flock of 60+ wild geese that roam the town and stop traffic when they decide to amble across the main road,’ says Marnie. While home for now, she muses their next move will be to an off-grid passive house in the middle of nowhere!

The sound and fury of Miss May I is deeply embedded in the hearts and minds of a legion of fans. These are people from different backgrounds, of different ages, with diverse life experience, who all come together and connect with Miss May I’s combination of brutal proficiency and impassioned delivery. The five-piece powerhouse, from the fertile grounds of America’s heartland, have become an integral part of the worldwide heavy music community, transcending boundaries and limitations, galvanising crowds, and energising each person they encounter. Not only have the young Warped Tour and Rockstar Mayhem veterans proven to be one of the most exciting bands in the genre, they’ve managed the near-impossible task of maintaining their original line-up along the way. These are the same guys who formed Miss May I as teenagers in 2007 – inspired by New Wave Of American Metalcore heroes like Lamb Of God, Underoath, and Bleeding Through, as well as hard rock and metal legends like Pantera and White Zombie. The band’s latest album, ‘Shadows Inside’, doubles as monster riff-fest and forcefully vocal driven statement shaped by changes both within and without. Make no mistake this isn’t an about-face album full of contrived sentiment or glossy emptiness. It’s a record where the band challenged each other to work from outside of their comfort zone, to really hone in on what makes Miss May I vital, and deliver something fully authentic and raw. On the road with friends and peers like August Burns Red, Parkway Drive, Blessthefall, Memphis May Fire, We Came As Romans, and Whitechapel, Miss May I bring devastating fury onstage and good natured charm offstage. They’ve held their own as support for rock radio hitmakers Five Finger Death Punch and throughout countless headline and support tours. This is a band with diverse appeal; they fine-tune their punishing metallic assault with an almost “pop” sensibility when it comes to catchy memorability. How to create an irresistibly romantic garden….
What is a romantic garden?
Everyone will have their own definition. So with Valentine’s Day looming up, I’ve picked out ten ‘romantic garden’ ideas.
Just a little bit wild…
A romantic garden always has something hidden away. You can’t quite see everything.
This is a corner of a garden called Tara Tieve near Melbourne in Australia. Parts of the garden are smartly cared-for. But this little shady area shows how important it is to have secret spots where nature appears to be gently and beautifully taking over.
A close-up of a Victorian ‘heart’ gate at Tieve Tara, Melbourne, Australia.
Soft, exuberant planting and old-fashioned plants
Soft, subtle colours and billowy blooms make a romantic garden planting. Garden maker Posy Gentles describes the colour palette in her own garden as ‘being like old lady’s knickers’.
Romantic soft peach and hints of pink in Posy Gentles’ ‘old ladies knickers’ colour scheme.
As today’s ‘old ladies’ are probably wearing thongs, younger readers may like a clearer definition of ‘old lady’s knickers.’ Posy means the baggy (sometimes knitted) underwear in over-washed soft peaches, pinks and off-whites that hung on washing lines in the 1960s and 70s.
My French garden chair again – I think hydrangeas are romantic plants because they’re in soft colours, and are blowsy and slightly old-fashioned.
Romantic garden gates
Garden gates have always been romantic. Perhaps it’s because they stand between the public road and the intimacy of a private home or garden.
A Victorian garden gate in Norwich, England.
This 1960s gate in Faversham is painted in a soft, romantic blue and looks wonderful against a mass of erigeron.
Victorian ‘heart’ gate at Tieve Tara, near Melbourne, Australia.
To buy antique or vintage garden gates, either search a local reclamation yard. Or Google ‘vintage gate’. You will get hundreds of results, many for sale through architectural salvage yards, eBay or other online auctions.
You can also find vintage designs in newly made galvanised garden gates here.
Note: There are some affiliate links in this post, which means you can click through to buy. If you do, I may get a small fee.
For the romance of discovery – the garden path
A romantic path is just a little bit over-grown. Where does it lead? We have to follow it to find out. This is at Doddington Place Gardens in Kent.
Another delightful path leads the eye on – at Pheasant Farm, open for the NGS on 14th May and 11th June.
A grass path is romantic too. This one is at Littlebredy Walled Garden in Dorset.
Romantic garden furniture
You don’t have to have hearts and flowers to make your garden furniture romantic.
Although I do love my French wrought iron heart chairs, bought from a depot vente in the South of France for £20 each in the early 1990s. We brought four of them back to England on top of the car, which presumably cost us a fortune in petrol.
Snow is definitely romantic. And it looks more romantic on wrought iron furniture….
New wrought-iron garden furniture, such as this set from Charles Bentley, is widely available.
There’s more about garden furniture here.
There’s lots of second-hand metal garden furniture around too. Check your local junk shops regularly. Faversham (Kent), is just around an hour and a half from London. It has a vintage and antique fair on the first Sunday of every month. There’s always vintage garden furniture in the mix somewhere.
Faversham’s Antiques & Vintage Market is on the first Sunday of every month.
Whether you buy new or second-hand, your furniture will look a bit more special if you paint it. We painted our French garden chairs in a soft grey, very similar to this Winter Grey Chalk Paint.
When choosing a colour, bear in mind that colours look paler outside than they do inside. Our grey garden chairs look white outside. But the grey-white is less harsh that an a pure ‘white’ white.
A close-up of the French garden chair. It looks ‘white’ but is actually a pale to mid-grey tone.
Somewhere to sit and talk
Julie Quinn’s London cottage garden – abundant planting and a strongly defined use of colour. See more about this garden on Julie’s blog London Cottage Garden.
A slightly curved bench, like this one at Clinton Lodge, Sussex, makes it easier for two people to chat. Clinton Lodge opens for the NGS.
Romantic lanterns and lighting
If you don’t have electricity in your garden, then solar lighting is now both effective and inexpensive. I’ve had two strings of Blingstring Solar Fairy Lights in the garden for more than six months. Both are still working.
We strung these round a pergola in August. In the summer, they last almost all night. In the winter when nights are longer and there is less solar light, they go off around 2am.
They were sent to me for review, so I have both the warm white and the blue light. I rather like the contrast of the two together, but it’s always worth checking you get the one you wanted.
Use glass jars or glasses for nightlights in gardens.
Cushions and rugs
Faded, vintage cushions and rugs make a garden look romantic.
Hugo and Anna Campbell make the most of a small space – comfortable cushions for seating and storage under the bench.
Vintage cushions in Posy Gentles’ garden. Photo by Caroline Garland.
And roses are romantic
This 1970s rose in a neighbour’s garden is called ‘Lover’s Meeting’. She says she chose it because her house is on a corner and she likes to think of lovers arranging to meet there. It seems to flower for nine months of the year.
Climbing and rambling roses are romantic. These are on a wall at Goodnestone Park Gardens.
Romantic pots
I think romantic pots are bursting with colour. This is lavender, purple petunias and Panicum ‘Shenandoah.’
This pot, surprisingly, is at Edgeware Road tube station. It’s an ordinary concrete planter, painted a pale pink. Looks great, I think! Very romantic for a railway station – although, in themselves, stations are quite romantic places.
And, of course, a romantic shed
There are so many romantic sheds out there – but I think that if I have to pick one, then this one by garden designer and topiarist Charlotte Molesworth must be the one. It was converted from an old swimming pool changing room, using found wood and Charlotte’s creative talents.
