Toilet Talk
So you want a toilet? I hear this all the time, then I ask several questions.
Where does the toilet waste go? Straight through the wall, into a soil stack or into the floor?
Are you having bathroom furniture – back to wall pan and concealed cistern required.
Does any family member have mobility, height issues or may be elderly? Comfort height required.
Is the area a particularly small space?
Here are some options:-
Close coupled open back
Probably the most common and oldest design of toilet.
This is made up of a pan, a ceramic cistern and a seat.
The back of the pan does not go all the way to the wall.
Close coupled fully enclosed to wall
This is made up of a pan, a ceramic cistern and a seat.
The back of the pan does not go all the way to the wall.
Back to wall pan (BTW)
This is made up of a pan and seat. These toilets are placed back to a wall or to a furniture toilet unit.
Inside the wall or unit is a concealed cistern which usually comes with the flush button or a flush plate can be used.
Wall hung
As it says this is then hung on the wall or in a unit and is a shallower pan. However, this must be accompanied by a wall frame to hang the toilet from. Each frame will give a maximum weight for use. Inside the wall or unit is a concealed cistern which usually comes with the flush button or a flush plate can be used.
Corner toilets
These are usually the close coupled variety with either an open back or fully enclosed back. If a wall is built across the corner, a back to wall pan, seat and concealed cistern can be used. They are sometimes useful in a small space.
Comfort Height – anything 460mm or above in pan height
For tall people, more elderly or persons with mobility issues. They come close coupled, open back, fully enclosed or back to wall.
Short projection
For small spaces and tight areas. They come close coupled, open back, fully enclosed or back to wall.
Pans can protrude 700mm or more into a room, but a short projection can be as short as 600mm.
