Glossary - Runes and Symbols
Galdramyndir - depending on the source either all magical symbols, including runes, (runic tradition) or non-runic magical symbols like Thor’s hammer (according to the Galdrabok) Villurúnir / Villuletur - used to confuse and hide Varnastafir - protective rods Bindrune: A rune created out of two or more single runes. Used for wishes or requests, healing, protection, etc. Either created with the letters in mind or the symbolism of the runes. If two or more binding runes are created by the same person, having the same effect in mind, they can influence each other, either amplifying or enfeebling the desired effect. Therefore it is important that every binding rune is created with a way of “un-binding” in mind. That can either happen through a time limit or through destroying the material the rune was carved in (preferably by burning it to ash). The appearance of the bindrune must correspond with its meaning. There are two different kinds of bindrunes. Bandrunir: A bindrune that is clearly visibly made out of runs Galdrastafr: Magic staffs. Probably inscribed with runes, but the individual runes can no longer be recognised. Galdrabók: An Icelandic Grimoire dated to the 16th century. (”Book of Magic) Valknut: First discovered on a runestone in Sweden. Invocation of Odin/Wotan. If used wrongly the Valknut can bring great psychic damage. Shield Knot: Schildknoten. often used upon amulets, this protectice sigil can also be used to decide the location of ramparts or paths to the other worlds of Yggdrasil. (not the same as a Celtic knot)

#a few years ago I used to know a lot about runes but apparently that all disappeared#so I threw this together for reference#free to reblog#to tag about Stiorra#to tag about Gisela#to tag research#ooc tag xx Marie ist eher Südgermane#if you go with tradition you can basically call everything a Galdramyndir but the Galdrabok specificaly says they are non-runic#me: Is this deep enough for research?#me: let's look up the meaning of Galdra#so this is tbc

how the fuck do you pronounce your url?
Ægishjálmr - “Eye-gis-hyowl-mur” is how the fuck it’s pronounced, and it’s an old Icelandic kenning for a specific example of Icelandic magical staves. Called “Galdrastafr”, they’re similar to other southern spheres of sigil magic in a lot of ways.
It translates to “helm of awe” because of its effect - bearing and presenting aegishjalmur has the power of inspiring fear in one’s enemies and protecting oneself. The root words aren’t so difficult if you break them apart; one can consider “Ægis” and its literal translation to “shield” or “guard”, but it also relates to the rune “Algiz”. Isn’t linguistic syncretism fun? :>
The latter half, “hjálmr”, bears a more obivous connection through our lovely English language to “Helm”.
The stave itself is extremely potent, and has even been accredited for the invincibility of the legendary Fáfnir. I myself have a crow skull pendant engraved with it that I’m very fond of. The a-acute and ‘æsc’ aren’t usable in a URL, so you have a bit of a shift in how it’s spelled in mine.

#tbt This one is from January 30, 2016. It's a Norse cypher rune (or galdrastafr) for courage. A cypher rune is a rune where the actual runes used have been represented by other things, like a certain number of lines. The Merriam-Webster definition of the word courage is; mental or moral strength to venture, persevere and withstand danger, fear, or difficulty. The background was created with colour and water blossoms, and some sgraffito and the original is still available through the link in my bio (as well as prints on Redbubble). The original is 30,3 x 22,6 cm/~12 x 9 inches For the #heartartchallenge: One way I infues who I am in my art is by connecting it to mythology and folklore, to my spirituality, and to nature #throwback #throwbackthursday #arttbt #watercolorpainting #watercolor #watercolorart #paintings #watercolorart #design #symbols #symbolism #pagan #100sacredsymbols #art #abstractart #painting #artwork #watercolour #artoftheday #instaartwork #instaart #myart #artofinstagram #lindaursinart http://bit.ly/2P4qdg5
