What's Marnie and Scrafty?

I was talking about Hop. I discount Victrier because that was an event that, at a guess, has never been repeated and thus isn't accessible. I don't count F2P access as just being free, it has to be free and persistently available. Nothing sucks worse than trying to follow some F2P guide for clearing content and being hit with "Just use this thing that was distributed three years ago and has never once been rerun, it's easy bro just always play the game and never take breaks or start late." If Marnie and Scrafty are a properly available F2P pair in some other metric then they'd be the second, but I don't remember them and assume that came after I left.

Though you can't fight him as a gym leader as you would Kabu, you can fight him in the champion rematch (Champion Tournament) and in the Galarian Star Tournament.

His Champion Tournament team consists of: Golisopod, Scyther, Scolipede, Galvantula, and G-Max Butterfree, all between the levels of 62/64-72/74.

His Galarian Star Tournament team consists of: Golisopod, Volcarona, and G-Max Butterfree, between the levels of 72 or 74.

His potential partners for the tournament include: Milo, Kabu, Gordie/Melony, and Raihan. Milo helps him to build possible Bug-type conservation spots, Kabu and him are both gym leaders together and romantic partners, he's the sort of honorary uncle of Gordie's family/Melony's gossip buddy, and he has a student/mentor relationship with Raihan.

He's a bit infamous in Galar for his passive aggressive interviews. He does not hold back his punches.

In Master's EX, his first sync pair is formed with Butterfree. His EX colors resemble the Pink Butterfree from the anime, rather than a standard Shiny.

This is just something I’ve noticed when playing Pokemas but the whole Kanto Trio seems to have a preferred gimmick they used Like they all use Mega Evolution, but Blue has the most mega evolution sync pairs with three (Pidgeot, Aerodactyl and Blastoise) while the others have one a piece. Which when you think about it, makes sense as we know he did study in Kalos so I could see him really latching onto the idea of Mega evolution (although his trainer lodge topics does show that he is interested in Dynamax...) Red seems to prefer Dynamax/Gigantamax with his Snorlax and Pikachu having G-max forms. Which correlates to the TCG card of Red having a G-max Pikachu indicating that he has likely at some point traveled through Galar. If they ever decide to add his Lapras (the next Pokemon I’m assuming he’d own given available lore) they might give him a G-max . And well, Leaf only has Eevee as her other non-Mega sync pair but Eevee uses a Z-move. It’d be interesting to see if they ever decide to add to her Eevee sync pair and have it Gigantamax. Or perhaps when they add the Terastallizing Technique maybe she’ll get one. Also Leaf definitely needs another unit so it would be cool to see if they continued with another Z-move or switched to giving her a Terastallized Pokemon so she could use three types of gimmicks

Headcanons for Pokémon games most likely to be “canon.” But this is just my speculation, probably biased by personal opinion in a few particular cases. I will sometimes use Pokémon Masters as a source, but only when there’s no other evidence to suggest any particular version of events.

Kanto: Yellow, surprisingly! Red’s teams when he is not playable usually have Pikachu, Blastoise, Charizard, and Venusaur. Of the games where he is playable, only Yellow allows the player to obtain all four. And the only reason that makes sense for Red to not evolve his Pikachu is if it didn’t want to for whatever reason, which only happens in Pokémon Yellow.

Johto: While there isn’t one game that can be pinned down as the most likely canonical version of events (Masters featuring both Kris and Lyra as separate, co-existing characters), Gold and HeartGold are least likely to be canon, as Pokémon Masters pairs Silver with Ho-Oh, who the protagonist catches as part of the plot in those games. As such, that leaves Silver, SoulSilver, and Crystal as the more likely options, since Ho-Oh is a completely optional encounter in those games.

Edit for new info: Ethan, who is treated as the Johto protagonist in Masters, has Lugia. His design is also taken from HeartGold and SoulSilver. As such, SoulSilver is most likely the “canon” version of events.

Hoenn: Omega Ruby, with the existence of Zinnia, a character exclusive to those remakes, in Pokémon Masters, and Brendan, in Masters being Norman’s son and thus implied to be the protagonist, having Latios. May can only have Latias in the game’s events when she’s the protagonist in Alpha Sapphire, but there’s not really anything stopping her from catching it after the events of Omega Ruby except Brendan getting there first, but that can only happen through an limited-time event. This would seem to be contradicted by Archie having a Sync Pair with Kyogre, but the only time he has any ownership of Kyogre anyway is his alternate-universe counterpart in USUM.

Sinnoh: Platinum most certainly is. In Pokémon Black and White, Cynthia references a trainer who faced Giratina. The only game where Cynthia witnesses this herself is Pokémon Platinum. Giratina can only be faced in the postgame in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, Brilliant Diamond, and Shining Pearl, and events that only happen in the postgame are rarely acknowledged.

Unova: This is perhaps the most subjective one, perhaps befitting the themes of Black and White and their sequels. But, since I believe that on a symbolic level Reshiram fits the protagonist better than Zekrom (as they show N the truth about the relationship between humans and Pokémon, which causes his ideals to shift), I believe Pokémon Black, and by extension Black 2, to be more likely to be the canon version of events. It doesn’t hurt that N’s default Sync Pair in Masters is Zekrom, with a different version with Reshiram only releasing later.

Kalos: Much like Hoenn, I will have to reach for Pokémon Masters for this one. Lysandre’s default Sync Pair is with Yveltal. Since villains in Masters are usually paired with the Pokémon they sought out, this leaves Pokémon Y as the more likely canon version of events (as Yveltal isn’t acknowledged in Pokémon X to my knowledge outside its Pokédex entry, which requires trading with another game.)

Alola: Pokémon Moon, based on Lillie having Lunala as a sync pair but not Solgaleo and the protagonists being based on their Sun and Moon designs but not their Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon designs. (Which I find strange, since most other protagonists are based on their most recent designs as playable characters…)

Galar: Pokémon Sword, since Gloria has Zacian as one of her Sync Pairs, but Victor does not have Zamazenta.

It’s impossible to say yet for Scarlet and Violet as of this writing, since no characters from that game show up in Pokémon Masters, let alone with Koraidon or Miradon, or any other version-exclusive Pokémon, Paradox or otherwise.

Addendum: TL;DR, based mostly on Pokémon Masters while drawing a little bit from the core series games, the most likely “canon” (I use this term very loosely) timeline of events goes Yellow > SoulSilver > Omega Ruby > Platinum > Black > Black 2 > Y > Moon > Sword. Please do not take this too seriously. This was just done for fun.

Iridia Porpoison is the protagonist of this fanfiction! Despite being loved by many people among the regions, from Kanto to Pasio, not much is known about her. Nobody knows what region she's originally from, (but people assume Kanto or Unova), nobody knows where her parents are, and she never really opens up to the media, despite being a Champion 3 times of 3 different regions.

But it is known that she ages in a weird way. She herself came out one day to say that ever since she turned 10 years old, she's been aging physically and mentally slower than the average girl. Every two years, she'd age one year, physically and mentally. So that's why she celebrated her birthday every 2 years. She was shy about letting this be known because she thought people wouldn't believe her. And she was right, but that didn't matter to her because the majority believed her anyway. Someone asked why she began aging slower, but she refused to share.

She's a weird and mysterious one, but people love her nonetheless. People look up to her, as she is a powerful trainer, even beating the legendary Champion of Sinnoh, Cynthia. People think a 15 year old could never be a Champion 3 times, so they think that Iridia was cheating in some way. When asked about this, she'd giggle and say "I don't cheat. Where's the fun in an unfair battle?"

But behind that cheery and ditzy personality, people feel like she knows way more than she should. That she's gone through stuff no child should. But only Iridia knows if that's true or not.

Hi, anon! Thanks for asking and sorry in advance about the long post, I'm releasing my full potential for this question weofwoewo

Well, first, I can understand why they're using Team Rocket over and over in order to manipulate other teams, it works just fine for them, but at the same time I find it a bit repetitive, so I'd avoid that for a new whole arc across generations. The plots would be focused on their own respective regions instead of a main theme. BUT there will be a common theme going on, and that is *VILLAIN ADMINS*

PS: let's just assume Paulo is always involved in these stories, but since he got his own prologues, I won't be focusing on him.

- For Kanto, of course, Team Rocket would the main antagonist. I wouldn't give another alt to Giovanni since he has three pairs already, so I'd focus on other characters. I thought of giving the main trio each a legendary bird just like Galar did but then again, Blue has too many sync pairs, he doesn't need one more. Personally, I'd give an alt to Green (maybe a Jigglypuff?), and since I also adore Brock, I'd give him a "competitive" sync pair (Omastar or Kabutops, perhaps). Lastly, a Cloyster for Lorelei just because. Plot-wise, I'd insert Jessie and James again (and would bring back their event), introducing some kind of character development for them. They're also getting new alts, a Seviper for Jessie and a Cacnea for James. They'd help Giovanni steal some of Lear's technology (or simply stealing money from a random competition, there's plenty of them) at the start of the story, but they'd face a situation that demanded some altruism/heroism from them, forcing them to change sides momentarily and thus frustrating Giovanni's plan, who would be oblivious to their good deeds. Still, Giovanni would get away with some advantage because it's him.

- Johto would follow the consequences of Giovanni's success at stealing info, maybe something regarding the legendary beasts. Since Kris already got a Suicune, I'd give shiny beasts (just like the event) to Lyra (Suicine), Ethan (Raikou) and Silver (Entei). The story would be focused on Silver and Giovanni's relationship (and I know it's cliche but come on, it's the angsty, delicious food we love to see) and also Ethan's bond with Silver. Lorelei and Clair would assist them just because it's my super rare ship and there's so little content on them ;-; Instead of Jessie and James, however, the spotlight would go to the other admins and their sync pairs' debut: Petrel (Weezing), Ariana (Arbok) and Archer (Golbat). See the similarity with Jessie and James? Except that they wouldn't be around. We could also get some hint that Ariana is Silver's mom (if we can get confirmation that Cyrus was the boy who wrote about Rotom, we can have that as well idc).

- NOW BRACE YOURSELF! IT'S TIME TO GO WILD FOR HOENN AND HARDENSHIPPING. First off, nothing against Zinnia and Steven but FUCK THEM. NO ZINNIA AND STEVEN STEALING THE PROTAGONISM FROM MY ECOTERRORISTS. The story could be anything as long as they're following the events of the last Hoenn arc, in which Archie and Maxie agreed on a truce. Except that the legendaries are insane and obviously would end up fighting again. I think Jirachi could be involved, kinda causing trouble bc of the wishes, and that would be the reason they'd fight. I know it's biased af and unrealistic to give alts to villains only, and although there's a hint that Archie met a Jirachi once, I'd do that for either May or Brendan (probably Brendan bc May has far too many alts jfc). Doesn't mean our ecoterrorists are not getting anything, though. That's right, they be getting a primal form for their respective legendaries. BUT the new sync pairs? ADMINS. IDC THERE'S A MEGA-SHARPEDO IN THE GAME ALREADY. MOVE YOUR ASS, GRIMSLEY, SHELLY IS ALSO GETTING A M-SHARPEDO. Tabitha and Matt are also joining the game with sync pairs (Torkoal and Relicanth. Doesn't make any sense but I can't just give them another Sharpedo and Camerupt pls fighting for my life here ;-;). The ending would be gay af idc. It would be so gay Steven and Wallace would feel embarrassed. (Wallace will get a new sync on the next rotation, sorry, Wallace). Also also, next rotation, we're also getting sygna suits for Archie and Maxie, and they be matching!! Any pokémon is alright, as long as they're related. Maybe.. Oh, Plusle and Minun??? Since they're opposites but also red/blue?? I've seen fanart of these alts too now that I think about it!! Perfection!!

- *heavy breathing* Bear with me, we're getting into sensitive territory now (at least for me). Sinnoh... Sinnoh, my beloved *gumball crying meme* Okay, okay. So... Okay let's go with unhinged Arceus. Let's go with bitchy Arceus trying to interfere with Pasio because it was not its creation. Let's go with Arceus forcing the protagonists and Team Galactic to work together to stop its little tantrum. And that would be perfect for Cyrus to bond with the admins. Yes, all the admins are getting sync pairs! Mars and Purugly, Jupiter and Skuntank and Saturn and Toxicroak. But you know who elseeeee is getting a new alt? *evil laughter* I'M GIVING CYRUS A ROTOM. But we're also getting Zinzolin and Cryogonal, and perhaps one ninja from the shadow triad (once again, I love you, Grimsley, but you're stealing ppl's signature pokémon ;-;). I also need Colress to go "tee-hee" with the war crimes just because it's funny. Diantha may have stolen Keldeo, but let's give the muskeeters to Rosa (Virizion), Nate (Terrakion) and Iris (Cobalion) (sorry, Pasio's main character). I'd love to introduce the triplets with the elemental monkeys but let's be honest, between the triplets and the submas, who on Earth would not go with submas? Ingo getting a Chandelure and Emmet, a Galvantula or Eelektross. Almost related but not quite, Roxie deserves an EX SO BAD. Roxie is getting an EX. Plot-wise, Ghetsis is after the muskeeters because he wants power and that's it. Family drama unfolds, N will suffer again yadda yadda. Ingo and Emmet are super involved tho. Because I said so. Next rotation, it's the triplets' turn, sorry.

- Oof, let's move on to Kalos. We just recently had a story that I found super boring booooo. Obviously, I'll go with perfectworldshipping, only with more drama. Sycamore getting an alt bc he was supposed to get one LAST MONTH AND HE DIDN'T, THAT'S HOMOPHOBIA. I know this is unpopular opinion but maybe an Aromatisse or Slurpuff. I like these Pokémon and I think Fairy is a type that matches Sycamore. You know who else we getitng? That's right, you were never able to play with AZ's Floette, but this ends NOW! AZ is making it into the game. Drasna and Malva are also debutting as playable characters (it's just a matter of time, after all). Regarding the plot... wouldn't it be chaotic fun if Lear's Hoopa met with a different Hoopa? *evil laughter* yes, I'd force Lysandre to work with the protagonists just for once, jfc, stop being such a little bitch and help them keep Pasio beautiful and less chaotic thanks. Calem is getting Hoopa just bc Serena has too many pairs already.

- I must confess that I haven't played the games from this point on cause I can't afford them anymore but let's try my best with the little I know about the next regions. Alola will be once again focused on Guzma and Lusamine. But I want to give the spotlight to Team Skull and not the Aether Foundation. Maybe, MAYBE, we can work with Giovanni, forcing the teams to fight in order to prevent him from bringing the rest of Rainbow Rocket to Pasio. But why Selene and Elio are so underappreciated in this game????? I'll most definitely give them alts. Zeraora is going to Elio and Blacephalon, to Selene. Melmetal goes to Guzma bc I said so.

- Galar already has a hint that Rose is making it to the game this year, so I'll just assume he'll be involved in whatever. Leon already got Eternatus, so I really don't have any idea of what could be possibly used as a plot device to move things around. Just please give someone, ANYONE, a Cinderace. No more alts, tho. Galar had the spotlight just this month, that would be insane and I can't take any more crystal wall characters, PLEASE, and I say that with tears in my eyes because I love Leon.

- No idea what's going on with Paldea aside from the professors abandoning Arven. I just need Rika and Clodsire, Larry and Komala, and whatever Geeta's signature pokémon is. Sorry, I don't know much about this region and I'm trying to avoid as many spoilers as possible until I can finally play it someday.

Sync Pair Retrospective - Kalos Neo Champions

This was such a mixed event for me. On the one hand, this is the best outfit Serena has. I love her hair, I love the blue, it's perfect. On this same hand, this is some of the best writing DeNA ever produced. The focus on Calem's rivalry with Serena leaving him feeling like he doesn't measure up, and wanting to push himself to do better so he can stand on equal footing with her, actually held weight. I generally don't like the confirmation of which protagonist is "canon," but one of the only times they do, and they nailed the emotional significance of the other side having literally never won. And when he does get his win, the whole event feels like this big accomplishment, like everyone involved has finally made it.

On the other hand, Greninja. God I hate this frog. Also, no other NC event has lived up to this one. Not even close. Galar NCs were fine but I'm still pissed about Opal, while Kanto NC event couldn't stop sucking Red's dick long enough to remember how Blue's character worked. I'm kinda sour on Neo Champions, despite how much I love the concept.

Neo Champion Serena Serena remains top Water. "But SS Lys-" no really, I need you to trust me on this one. Serena is obscenely good. Low gauge cost, fast self-setup with little to be desired, powerful Water and Dark-type sync that ranks well above the competition, rebuff application for both types, hilarious levels of debuffing on Water, flinch and accuracy debuffing on Dark, etc etc etc. Serena wanted for very little.

Truth be told, I have little to say as well. Nothing has seriously competed with Serena in what she set out to do. She's insane. And in a few days, datamine very well may show us they handed her the Strike Role, and now I legitimately don't think there's any stopping her. If anything, she just got better when SS Lysandre entered the picture, because now she had someone she aligned perfectly with. His Buddy move evaporates sides, her sync deletes center, and both are powered up further by Kalos Pride. What possible limitation is there to be found with her? Even outside of the Water situation, Serena has Dark at her disposal as well. Despite that type being loaded with powerhouses, Serena keeps up perfectly, and if she receives that Strike role, NC Marnie is frankly out of a job. That's how disgusting NC Serena is. This is going to get a buff soon. Not Anni Lillie though, apparently. The meta is unfair.

In spite of that though, I barely use Serena. I legitimately think there's some kind of brain block that prevents me from using pairs that I think are actually too good at what they do. It's like how I never really use SS Lyra or NC Marnie, I just can't bring myself to do it. It's no fun.

Neo Champion Calem Calem, by comparison, kinda sucks. Oh, don't give me that, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

Calem had tremendous value as a role compression support. Not just Rain, but Dark Zone, could be called. Considering only SS Cyrus had this ability before, and SS Cyrus has never rerun, Calem had tremendous value. There's just one teensy tiny problem. The conditional was 10 hits on opponents. Which meant, unless he was running with NC Serena, that condition isn't going up until it's time to sync. Which is completely unhelpful. This is the crux of what makes Calem so frustrating: he has these two tools, but they're inaccessible until the fight drags out a little. His buddy move is a nice injection of stats, but with Team Sharp Entry at 3/5 he can't cap crit, and neither offensive stat moves to cap either. He also messed up, going for Special Moves on Rain and Physical on Dark, when the inverse at the time was the better call. Even now, Special on Rain was a mistake; he does not at all compete with SS Kris for rain dominance. He's far more frail, and lacks her healing potential. And to make his life worse, one of his big benefits was that he buffed both offenses and crit pretty quickly. That was something! Well, it was, until NC Bede dropped, and copied most of his stat boosts on a 2MP move that also gave both kinds of Moves Up Next per use and refreshed every sync and also rotated Free Moves Next and could do SEUN on all allies. Bede put a lot of people out of work...

Thankfully, all he had to do was wait a week and his fortunes were reverse, thanks to SC Zinnia. SC Zinnia has X Atk All, and thus between the two of them, they cap the entire team's physical offensive needs in one turn, while also setting Rebuff. Zinnia's Buddy move hits AoE and flinches, which is fantastic for stealing an extra turn for Calem to ensure his Buddy move goes up with first sync. Pretty much any physical Dark type could fill in and the team would still work. This was a surprisingly powerful answer to NC Marnie's dominance, literally one month later. I switched to Zinnia and never looked back; this was so much more fun. And with Akari, we've now entered a situation where Dark Zone can be called at any time for this team, and Calem supplements later on. They're stronger than they've ever been, and are a huge part of what makes Dark so dominant. It's hard to beat 70% flinch rates, stealing all buffs then preventing them, perpetual Dark Zone, massive DPS on Akari, massive sync on Zinnia, and Calem throwing in Team Endure and evasion boosts. Yes, I know people will run Marnie as the third and Akari as the tank, and it works in CS. I like the bullshit of evasion. But I do see the appeal.

The point is, Calem came around to be really good, and it was kind of exciting. Which is why it's so disappointing his EX Role is Tech. This dude was perfect for either Field or Sprint, and they went with Tech. Hysterically disappointing. Guess we can't expect much good for Supports from these EX roles.

Final Thoughts Kalos NCs were huge, and remain huge. While I dunked on Calem all day on his release, he did have some good traits, and has since been elevated to a position on one of my favorite team compositions. That said, I do think that teams succeeds almost in spite of him, with SC Zinnia doing most of the heavy lifting there. I think the two are fairly lopsided in that regard. Serena's exceptional on both fronts, and has a ton of traits beyond just damage that will keep her relevant long into the figure. Calem is good but feels like he's just waiting to get outclassed. The Rain/Zone combo will keep him relevant, but that Buddy conditional really does him no favors.

Releasing triple master fairs for the Galar rivals for anniversary is retribution for my hubris, assuming I could waste all my gems in February because I wouldn’t have any interest in the anniversary pairs.

Releasing Ball Guy in a variety scout is just giving me the middle finger for wanting to collect all the Galar sync pairs. He’d be a good candidate for a free pair, spotlight at best...why on EARTH is he limited?!

Can people in Galar just become Trainers at any given time, even when the Gym Challenge isn’t currently in session? Because for the purposes of Masters, I’d think Victor caught a Wooloo that rolled into him or a Rookiedee that tried to steal his food, and he decided not to wait for the Gym Challenge to become a proper Trainer and just… went on a journey for the sake of a journey.

Trainers in Galar can definitely become trainers before the gym challenge. In fact, there's plenty of evidence in-game that suggest that most trainers do not start being trainer at the same time as the gym challenge. If you take a look at the champion cup's rematch, most of the gym challengers look to be older teens and young adults, with one elderly man. Marnie is mentioned by Piers to have gotten Morpeko awhile aback, and Bede was sent off to a trainer's school before the gym challenge. Even Hop has a Wooloo before Victor/Gloria has a Pokemon. And Leon is at least somewhat implied to have gotten Charmander while training at the Dojo prior to the gym challenge.

Given how tough the gym leaders are in Galar and the fact that everything is televised, it makes more sense that most trainers have some experience with Pokemon before stepping into the spotlight, with trainers starting in the gym challenge with little training prior (with Victor/Gloria and Hop) being the exception rather than the norm. In fact, this is why Leon is initially so hesitant to endorse the player and Hop, not because he thought they'd be bad trainers but rather because he didn't want to throw them to the wolves so soon.

The real question is, what are the options in Galar to do outside of the gym challenge? The only place we have that we know trains trainers is the Dojo that Mustard runs. We never see a typical trainer's school in Galar to indicate where Bede was sent. However, we do know that there is a minor division of the Pokemon league and that there are leaders for them. This is speculation, but it's likely that during the off-season, the minor league holds tournaments and mock gym battles. A setup like this would definitely benefit new trainers to get used to traveling and having battles in stadiums while also keeping the minor gym leaders in shape in preparation for the ranking tournament.

Now, as far as what Victor may get in Pokemas that will definitely be interesting to see. Since Gloria takes up the protagonist role for masters Victor definitely will have a lot more wiggle room with his backstory. I still see him getting one of the starters (even though we know Leon gets the third starter in canon) but he can definitely have more than one sync pair and maybe his starter will have been Rookidee (Corviknight by the time he appears).

Anyway so far I am REALLY intrigued abt the anni sync pairs lmfao. Like so far in terms of anniversary sync pairs we've gotten N, Lillie, Steven, Skyla, May, and Raihan — so Galar, Hoenn, Unova, and Alola ALL have gotten anni sync pairs up until now — and with Ash being announced Kanto is getting one too. But now I'm like. Really curious abt one thing. There has been a lot of speculation abt Red being another anniversary sync pair but I'm actually..... really curious if that is in fact true though.
