Reminiscing: My Top Five Movies of the Summer
A couple of months ago I set out on a mission. To watch as many summer movies as possible and review them in hopes that you could save that hard earned dollar, a task that is not for the faint of heart. Why you ask? You see film and storytelling is something I am passionate about. Maybe it is escaping from everyday problems or possibly that story telling is creativity and imagination at its finest. And that is something I think is really special.
As I look back at the last few months I remember every laugh, cry, roll of the eye due to crappy movies, and nerd worthy moments of the summer. I think there is no more fitting way to end the summer movie season than with a ranking of my favorite films, and hell I will throw in the worst just for you cynics. If anything there will be a bunch of picks of me giving a thumbs up! Click the hyperlink to read my full review of each movie.
The Best
5. Logan Lucky
This southern deep fried heist film flew under the radar for many at the end of the summer season, which I canât stress enough is a travesty. Logan Lucky tells the story of the Logan Brothers, who plan an elaborate scheme to rob the largest race track in America. This off beat film provides genuine laughs without being forced, which is more than most recent comedies can say, and with a script that is both exciting and well thought out. I simply found myself connecting with these odd, yet endearing, characters. This is the kind of movie I live for, the complete surprise at the cinema.
4. Wonder Woman
One of the biggest box office successes of the summer, making more than 400 million dollars, sure didnât disappoint. This couldnât be more perfect timing for the DC Comics Extended Universe, or DCEU as many nerds call it, with their last two films receiving poor reception form fans and critics alike. Wonder Woman tells the story of Diana Prince, aka Wonder Woman, a young Amazonian woman who embarks on an adventure through Europe during World War 1. The quest is made with the hope to stop Ares the god of war. The film does an expert job creating the world of Amazonians and of War torn Europe. The action scenes are incredible to watch, most notable the trench scene. Gal Gadot creates a character that is charming, fierce, and simply a kick ass female hero. This mixed with a great supporting cast makes for one excellent comic book film.
3. Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2
Anyone who truly knows me will tell you that I am a huge Guardians of the Galaxy fan, more specifically Star-lord is my favorite character in the whole Marvel franchise. So perhaps I am a little biased with this choice. Volume 2 had some big shoes to fill after the success of the first film, but I can without a doubt tell you this film not only surpasses the first but might also be my favorite Marvel movie. This time around the Guardians are on the run from an Alien race called the sovereign. In their efforts to escape they find a mysterious man named Ego who claims to be Star-lordâs father.  This movie juggles these lovably characters well, and even pushes them for more development. Unlike most Marvel films it takes its time and allows its story to unfold, which is key especially in regards to its villain. Lastly it should be said that its opening sequence with baby Groot dancing is probably the most fun scene of the summer.
2. Dunkirk
In my eyes Christopher Nolan can do no wrong, with the Dark Knight trilogy, Inception and Interstellar being some of my favorite films of all time. His return to the big screen with Dunkirk brings his expertise behind the camera and his inventive storytelling to a war story of true heroism. The film focuses on the situation in World War 2, when almost 400,000 soldiers were pushed to the beaches of France. Dunkirk keeps the story interesting by providing multiple interconnecting storylines. Each actor from Tom hardy to Harry Styles, yes the singer from One Direction, gives a notable performance. This film gives the most realistic flight sequences I have ever seen on a film, matched with truly great cinematography.
1. War for the Planet of the Apes
Going into the summer I already knew that War for the Planet of the Apes was going to be high on my list, but the film surpassed every expectation I had cementing its place as number one. This closing segment in the trilogy follows Caesar as he continues to fight the war between man and ape. This movie has stuck with me since the first time I saw it, and yes I have seen it multiple times. It just does an expert job pushing its characters to the limits and allowing us to fully understand their motivation. Woody Harrelson provides one of the most interesting villains I have seen in a long time. While Andy Serkis gives an Oscar worthy performance as Caesar. It is hard to top this emotionally impactful film, which also boasts the most impressive action scenes of the summer. Multiple times in this film I felt my jaw drop from the scenes that were unfolding. Â
The Worst
To add on to the list, here are the two worst movies I have seen all summer. I know I didnât have time to write full reviews, but maybe I will get around to it now that the movie season is slowing down. Read on at your own risk.
2. The House
It seems like a pure comedy is a rarity now a days, this being one of the few that came out during the summer season. The House stars Will Ferrell and Amy Poehler and tells the story of two parents who turn their house into a casino to raise money for their daughterâs college education. I will just say it; I donât think I laughed once during this film. It is obvious that the script isnât funny, thatâs why you see its lead actors both over acting and just adding swear words for cheap laughs. The other troubling matter is that once the house is a casino, the characters donât do much besides for watch people gamble. I guess the House doesnât always win.
1. The Book Of Henry
It was hard for me to choose which movie truly was reigned supreme as worst of the summer, but as I gave it more and more thought the film The Book of Henry kept coming back to me. The film was about a single mom with two kids, one of which is a boy genius. When the boys find out their neighborhood friend is being abused by her father, Henry concocts a highly detailed plan toâŚ..kill the abusive father. You heard me right the 10 year old boy creates a plan to kill his friendâs father, best of all the plan is for his mother to carry out. First the whole idea for the film is just ridiculous. Add that with some pretty terrible acting and storylines that seem unnecessary and you got yourself a bad film. There is a forced love story between the mom and the young hot shot child therapists. Also in the mix of murder the younger brother wants to be involved in a talent show! That all being said there is a plot twist in the film I didnât see coming. So take that for what it is.
As the summer season comes to a close and the leaves change their colors, I look back at all the fun times I had at the movies with friends and family. I want to thank everyone who has helped me with CineSaver, and simply those of you who read it. I look forward to reviewing movies for you in the future! Â
