and on that note, which ship is which season? and why is it gajevy-spring, nalu-summer, jerza-autumn, and gruvia-winter?

The Princess in the Ivory Tower (part 3/4)
Gajevy Week 2023, Day 1: Fairy Tale
It was past midnight that an enormous beast hit the ivory tower with its claws, roared a mighty roar and ripped out the window with frame and all.
A dragon!
Stones and wooden planks crashed into the yard like falling leaves.
The knights who had heard the ruckus grabbed their swords and rushed out into the court, but it was too late; they could only watch the silvery shadow fly off towards the nearby mountains, and in its claws it was holding the princess.
The king came running out in his nightcap, too, and he immediately called for the three contestants.
‘I want you to track down that dragon, slay it and bring my beloved child back home!’, he cried in awe.
The princes shouted out their agreement and demanded that their horses should be made ready. Only the Road Knight stayed calm in all the turmoil.
‘Is this an official quest you’re hiring me for?’ he asked, smirking again. ‘Then let's talk about my reward first. I don't work for free. And I'm talking about hard money, not some disguised burden like a princess or a kingdom.’
‘Fine, fine! You shall have it!’ the king exclaimed. ‘Bring my daughter back and I'll give you as much gold as your pockets can hold. And for the others: Consider this your third task.’
The three knights set off together at once, but in no time the Flower prince was left behind, and the prince of Celeritas had to give up in the mountains as neither he nor his horse could handle the dangerously steep rock walls.
Thus the Road Knight was left alone on this quest with his horse as his only companion, and this was just the way he liked to work best anyway. They had been a good team for a long time already.
The path wound up the mountains in the dark of the night, it was cold and the land was barren. But after a while which seemed like forever, the traces of a gigantic monster increased in number. Broken rocks, gnawed bones and pieces of silvery scales scattered on the ground told the Knight that he was nearing his target.
And then the beast was there, sitting on a ledge, his back turned on the rock wall behind which the fighter was hiding.
The dragon was as large as a barn. His body glittered in the moonlight like polished metal.
The Knight silently turned his right arm into a bastardsword and took a deep breath, then he entered the plateau and yelled, 'Oy, scrapheap! We had a deal! You stay away from humans and I'll spare your scaly ass, remember?’
The dragon spun around and unfolded his enormous wings, like... he wanted to block something from sight? His eyes, which had unusual black markings to their outer corners, glared ferociously as he roared 'That bargain wasn't broken, Road Kni-'
‘Wait! You two know each other?!'
Suddenly a female - and rather upset - voice came from behind the dragon. The Road Knight took advantage of the surprise effect, dodged, rolled under the dragon's wings and jumped to his feet right behind the monster's giant front legs, only to stand frozen a second later in complete disbelief.
The captivated princess was sitting comfortably on a flat rock in her lace nightgown, a warm cloak wrapped around her shoulders which looked a bit battered, like it had once been a soldier’s garment. In her lap, she was holding an open book as if she had just been reading out aloud, and she was pretty relaxed for a hostage.
The dragon suddenly seemed very embarrassed.
'What the heck is going on here?' the Knight asked with a frown, turning his arm back to normal.
Now the princess closed her book with a snap, slid of the rock and hurried towards the Knight where she forced herself between him and the dragon with her hands on her hips.
'Are you here at my father's orders? Listen, this dragon didn't really kidnap me - well, technically he did, but he did me no harm. He just wanted me to help him with something, and - ah, whatever. These mountains belong to the territory of my kingdom, which means that every dragon living here is officially my subject. I won’t allow you to harm him!’ she put her foot down. Her look was stern but somewhat droll as she was so short. Yet the Road Knight hid his amusement and ignored her completely as he crossed his arms and looked the dragon straight in the eye, which everyone knew was a surefire way to get killed.
‘I’d say kidnapping this annoying little stay-in-the-tower princess here does count as breaking the bargain. Even though you two seem to get along pretty well,’ he taunted. ‘Explain yourself before I run out of patience!’
The dragon flashed him a sinister glance and straightened his back before he spoke.
'I agreed to stay away from humans to keep the peace between our races, alright. And I’m a dragon of honour. I keep my word. But animals and trees aren't actually entertaining companions, you know. Nor are rocks. I... I was bored! I was just looking for some distraction. And then I happened to overhear some travellers. They were talking about those objects that can tell stories.'
'Books,' the Road Knight concluded. The dragon shifted uncomfortably and nodded.
'Yeah... It wasn't difficult to - er - find me some books. But nothing happened. Then I found out that you have to read them to make them reveal the stories...'
'Which you can't.'
‘It’s not his fault. Not all people can read!’ the princess interjected, but she was ignored again as he just continued.
‘So you got yourself a reader, I see. Well, I hate to crash you little book club, but I was hired to take that girl back to her old man. Now, may I trouble you to get on my horse, milady, or would you rather be tied to the saddle like a bag?’, he offered with an ironic little bow. His black horse snorted, but it almost sounded like a snigger.

Attention Gajevy Fans!!
It’s another year! While prompts won’t be introduced until later this month, we wanted to post some preliminary things to get the buzz going! Gajevy Week 2023 will be happening this year! We also want to mention that this year we will be moving the week to the last week of April rather than earlier like past years for (hopefully) less stress to finish works!
Also, this year we will be trying a new way to showcase everyone’s works at the end of the week! There will be a Google Form linked on one of our posts that, if you choose to, you can put your username and work that you want to be showcased to be added to a little collection post! Like a mosaic (for fanart and images) or a post with links (for fanfictions). And you can also dm if you wish to!
If you have any questions please send them to our ask box!

The Princess in the Ivory Tower (part 4/4)
Gajevy Week 2023, Day 1: Fairy Tale
Enough was enough! For even if she preferred to be left alone in her library, the princess absolutely hated to be ignored when she had something to say, and with the Road Knight’s impertinence her temperament had finally got the better of her. She rushed forward again and poked her index finger into his armoured chest.
'Oh no, I'm not letting you off the hook so easily. I bet you accepted a lot of money for "killing" that dragon the last time you met, didn't you? Was it more that my father offered you for my safe return? How would you like it if everybody heard about your little "agreement"? And I 'm a princess. People will believe me. You won't ever get another job in your life.'
The Road Knight gritted his teeth, yet he couldn’t help but recognize that she had outwitted him. Maybe she wasn't as unworldly as he had thought.
'What's your condition, then?' he jumped at it with a sigh.
The princess smiled at him graciously. Even the dragon smirked.
'Always straight to the point, aren't you? Well, my father is getting old and I finally realized that I don’t want some random guy to help him just because he passed a few tests. I’d rather take responsibility myself. But I can’t do it alone. I watched you during the competition, and I appreciate your unconventional way of tackling problems. Besides, you proved your kindness when you spared him twice,' she explained, pointing at the dragon. 'I need someone with those qualities to help me protect my kingdom. Therefore I want you to be my champion.'
The Knight couldn’t deny that the princess had deeply impressed him with her unexpected determination. And besides, a steady employment wasn't that bad either. After all, she just wanted him for her fighter and not for her husband. Working for her might actually turn out to be quite interesting.
'You have guts - for a bookworm, that is,' he chuckled. ‘Well then! I accept to be your champion. And as a gift, I won’t slay your new pal – once more.’
The dragon laughed a mighty laugh which sounded more like a battle cry, then he bent forward and stretched out his wings.
‘I won’t eat you either, Road Knight. You’re too tough a cookie anyway. Now get on my back. Let me take you home to the lady’s castle,’ he said. ‘I sense a wind of change coming to this kingdom.’
The Road Knight mounted the dragon behind the princess, and off they flew.
Back at the castle, the grounds were filled with people. The whole household seemed to be on their feet, looking out for any sign of their princess. But nobody would have expected what happened at the break of dawn.
A huge shadow suddenly lowered down on the meadow before the castle. The dragon had come back! People started to scream and run around in panic.
Yet on his back he was carrying both the princess and the Road Knight, who helped the girl off the beast as soon as they had landed, for somewhere far at the back of his mind he had found some dusty manners he had once learned.
In no time the old king and the castle guard arrived at the scene, trailing the two crestfallen princes behind them.
'Father,' the witty princess said, 'here I am back safe and sound. And I have brought my friends.’ She put her hands on the dragon’s front leg and the Road Knight’s shoulder to demonstrate their bond.
Everybody gazed in amazement, but then they cheered and celebrated the safe return of their beloved princess at the beginning of this new day.
'So, who's the winner of the competition after all?', the Scarlet Knight wondered after a while. All eyes turned towards the Road Knight in great expectation, but he just shrugged and grinned.
‘The princess is,' he said, ticking off the facts on his fingers as he counted. 'Firstly, she proved that she can protect her subjects when she made me spare the dragon in battle and forced me to become her sword instead. Secondly, she smiled when she realized that she’s the architect of her own fortune and the only one who can make herself happy. And thirdly, she brought herself home again after she had been captured by a monster. I dare say that she fulfilled all three tasks and that she would make a fabulous queen.'
It took the wise old king a few moments to process what had happened. But then he understood. Suddenly he laughed out loud, hugged his daughter dearly and exclaimed: 'So be it!'
The dragon became the official guardian of the kingdom, and he soon learned to read and to carefully turn over book pages with his massive claws on his own.
The princess, however, finally took over responsibility as a sovereign, and because she had learned so much from her books, she became just as wise a regent as her father, ruling the kingdom together with him as his right hand.
The Road Knight never stopped roving, but he did so as the princess's champion, and over time they grew quite fond of each other. You wonder if they ever got married? Well, it took some more years and a lot of persuasion from the part of the princess, but eventually they did.
The king became incredibly old. And they lived happily ever after."
Levy closed the book from which she had been reading out aloud and turned her head to face Gajeel, who was lying on their bed next to her. He didn't seem too pleased in the soft light of the candles on her bedside table.
'Tch, what kind of fairytale is that? Who's supposed to believe such crap?' he asked and snorted. She put the volume aside and lay down, curled up next to him and snuggled her head against his shoulder.
'Lu-chan wrote it, and I enjoyed it very much.'
'lt’s completely unrealistic. How did the Bunny come up with such idiot characters?'
'Oh Gajeel. Since when have you been a literary critic? Fairy tales don't have to be realistic. And besides, Lucy usually draws her inspiration from people she knows.' Suddenly she smiled and nodded her head gently towards the little bundle of blankets he was holding on his chest. 'Look, it worked,' she whispered. After long, the baby had finally fallen asleep.

The Princess in the Ivory Tower (part 2/4)
Gajevy Week 2023, Day 1: Fairy Tale
All too soon the second day of the competition dawned, and the king gathered the remaining candidates in the castle hall to proclaim this day's task.
'Today shall be a test of your characters,' he said. 'Find a way to make my daughter smile and you will be declared the winner of this round, as her future husband must be able to make her happy.'
The two princes nodded in agreement.
The Road Knight, however, gasped, as he had meanwhile heard of the oddball in the tower.
'Her - what?!'
'Future husband,' the Flower prince explained patiently. 'The winner will marry the princess. The usual thing. Isn't that what we're here for, mate?'
The Road Knight frowned, but he joined the crowd anyway which was gathering rapidly at the foot of the ivory tower.
The gold awaiting him was just too tempting to give up now just because of some crotchety hermit princess. He had wriggled out of similar situations before, and marriage was definitely not an option.
The task began.
First the prince of the Flower Kingdom stepped forward.
'All girls love flowers,' he said, 'so let me gain her heart with my magic. Her smile will be my treasure.'
He dropped a few seeds from his pocket at the foot of the tower, then he raised his arms up to the sky. At once emerald green ranks sprouted from the earth, wound high around the stone walls until they reached the princess’s window. The most beautiful pink and white flowers bloomed everywhere and filled the court with the sweetest scent imaginable.
‘Fair maiden, please accept my modest gift, for no flower can ever match your beauty!’ the prince called up to the library where the silhouette of the princess could be spotted. The princess, however, did not even raise her head from the pages of her book when she mumbled ‘Nice, thank you’, keeping a straight face all the time.
The Flower prince hung his head in resignation and withdrew from the scene.
The prince of Celeritas was the second in line.
‘There's no girl who doesn't like sweets,’ he said, ‘and with my power of acceleration, I will bring her the most exclusive delights in the blink of an eye!’
And off he was, only to return half an hour later with a golden tray full of delicate confectionery which obviously came from a foreign country.
Many ladies in the audience gasped in envy, for they had never tasted such exquisite treats and probably never would.
The prince did not stop at the foot of the tower; he used his incredible speed to run up the walls of the ivory tower and knelt down on the window sill right before the princess.
‘Would the sweetest princess of all care for some sweets?’ he asked in a flirty manner, offering her the tray.
Well, the princess didn’t care. She didn’t smile either. But at least she put her book aside and jumped to her feet.
‘Leave me alone, you jerk!’ she shouted furiously and slammed the shutters close in his face.
The prince of Celeritas fell off the sill, all the way down to the hard courtyard ground where he finally lay still, sobbing quietly every now and then. One could tell that he was not used to being rejected.
At last the Road Knight stepped up to the tower’s heavy door.
The spectators were holding their breath. What would he be offering the princess?
The Knight, however, just put his hands on the wooden planks and conjured up some heavy iron bands to seal the door. The whole tower was shaking with the force of his spell.
'Problem solved,' he smirked dusting his hands off, then he walked away in self-satisfaction. The king stared after the Road Knight with his eyes almost popping out of his head.
'Have you just locked up my daughter, you scoundrel?!' he screamed madly, but he never received an answer.
Immediately a tumult broke out. The strongest members of the king's household, including the two princes and the commander, tried their everything to rip off the iron bands, but not even the blacksmith with his tools was able to remove them.
The princess, however, peeped out of her tower window in disbelief. Her heart was pounding fast. Only that roguish knight had actually listened to what really made her happy... He alone had taken her wishes seriously.
And for the first time in forever, the corners of her lovely mouth twitched and found themselves in a smile upon something that had not been written in a book.
That evening the Road Knight was in big trouble. After the princess’s lady in waiting had told the king who of the knights had succeeded in making her young mistress smile, the sovereign was even more furious. He threatened to disqualify him unless he took off the seals from the tower, and so he finally did.
No joke was worth so much gold – especially as a magnificent fortune was waiting just one task away from him.
But the final trial for the contestants was never to be held, for that night a terrible disaster struck the castle on gigantic wings.

The Princess in the Ivory Tower (part 1/4)
Gajevy Week 2023, Day 1: Fairy Tale
"Once upon a time in a faraway country there was a wise old king whose only child was a daughter.
The princess was lovely but very shy. She adored nothing more than books, thus she spent all of her time in the ivory tower of the castle where there was a big library. The king loved her so much that he couldn't bring himself to force her to leave her sanctuary. Therefore she spent a secluded life dwelling happily in her stories and legends.
But as the years went by and the king was getting older, he started to worry about the future of his child and his kingdom. Who would take care of them when his time had come to leave the world?
As the princess's 17th birthday was nigh, he finally made a decision.
Soon the tidings were spread across every country that the wise old king was holding a contest to find a worthy successor who would gain half his riches and his daughter's hand as a reward and who would become king after him. Every young nobleman and knight willing to compete was invited, and they poured into the kingdom from near and far.
It was in the remotest corner of a gloomy inn that a wandering knight got word of the news, too.
Surely my readers would have loved him to be your archetypical knight-errant, travelling the country in shining armour to test his chivalric ideals or strive for courtly love, helping everyone in need solely to gain fame and honour.
Alas, he wasn't.
Our knight was indeed a roving fighter and a mage who had made himself a name as the Road Knight. But he didn't care for ideals or a good reputation at all.
He only cared for gold.
Yet news are a curious thing. They tend to be tweaked and twisted a bit every time they are told, especially when word is passed by mouth.
Thus it happened that our knight heard about a contest a king from a faraway land was holding, some kind of tournament with a splendid reward, and he decided to take part in it. He was broke once more, and it seemed a fairly easy way to earn some money.
So he mounted his faithful black horse and set off for the journey.
The contest was meant to last three days. When the opening day came, the castle court was buzzing both with spectators and aspirants longing to see the beautiful princess whose hand was the noble prize.
Only the princess couldn't be persuaded to descend from her library.
She did not want to witness the trial which was held for the sake of her future.
She despised her father's idea of reducing her to a mere trophy for some narcissistic wannabe hero.
But being a princess, she had no choice anyway.
The king now welcomed the competitors alone, of whom three dozen had arrived, and within an hour the first task was about to start.
The candidates had to showcase their talent as fighters, as a king needed to be able to protect his kingdom and everyone living within its borders. Therefore the hopeful young men had to face the commander of the king's guard, the strongest fighter of all, who was known as the Scarlet Knight throughout the country and beyond.
Those who could stand up to her in melee for fifteen minutes would pass the test, while both swords and magic were allowed as weapons.
Meanwhile the Road Knight had taken a nice long nap by the side of the road. It took his poor horse quite a few hard kicks to wake him up, so he almost arrived late at the tournament field and heard nothing of the king’s speech or the rumors about the princess.
When the battle started, he just leant idly against the fence enclosing the site, crossed his arms and yawped while the fight was raging around him. He did not even carry a sword with him.
It wasn’t until the Scarlet Knight had finished off more than half of his opponents when he finally decided to join the brawl, but what a sight it was!
For the Road Knight did not need to bear arms: His magic was of a kind that he could conjure up any shape of metal he wanted, turning his limbs into weapons easily. He was indeed an experienced fighter, having taken on countless opponents and monsters alike over the years. Still the commander gave him and the other combatants a hard time. When time was up at last, only three of them were left: the prince of the Flower Kingdom, the prince of the kingdom of Celeritas, and our Road Knight.
The crowd cheered the winners with thunderous applause, and a gorgeous feast took place that night.
Only the princess was nowhere to be seen.

Yay! Gajevy Week 2023 is about to start tomorrow and guess who hasn't finished a single prompt yet...
Yep. Me. The first time I decide to take part in an event and immediately real life comes in my way. Does that sound familiar to anyone?
OK, the 'Fairy Tale' prompt got completely out of hands. 😆 I was planning to do a nice little ficlet but it has 3000 words already. I'm hoping to finish at least this one and upload it in several parts during the week.
Writing in English (not my native language) still feels a bit strange, but it is great fun anyway.
See you tomorrow!
