Glad we're not in Quezon City (Manila) anymore. This is near our old place there, and how Typhoon Carina (aka Gaemi) affected it. (These pics from news sites)

In Baguio we just have to deal with landslides closing off one of the two main routes in and out of town. Thankfully, no one was killed here, but I believe there were some lives lost in the lowlands. (These pics are from local news, also)

For anyone worried about our family specifically, we came through the typhoon just fine! (See the pics I took below)

Our place is well-sheltered by being below the lip of a little valley, and well-drained enough (see the drainage ditch below) that all we've gotten has been torrential rains, some stuff blowing around on our balcony, and some brief power flickers. You can see how thick our concrete walls are, and how well-reinforced our windows are, PLUS our front door is made of steel. This building has survived many an earthquake and super typhoon, and will probably outlast the sun.

And as always, we had a week's worth of drinking water, candles, emergency lights, power banks, and a gas stove with plenty of fuel. We're pretty much as typhoon-proof as it's possible to be here.

Carina is now heading towards Taiwan, and is expected to intensify into a super typhoon. I hope everyone there is prepared.

Fu Shun

MV Fu Shun sank off Kaohsiung; 4 survivors.

The 56 meter long, 599 gt general cargo vessel Fu Shun (IMO: 8545654)  sank some 19 miles off Kaohsiung, Taiwan.  The Fu Shun had developed a list from water ingress caused by the high winds and waves from Typhoon Gaemi.  The vessel alerted authorities early in the morning that it had developed a list and was in distress.  The cargo vessel quickly lost stability as the list increased to nearly 45…

Typhoon Ondoy (Ketsana) which crossed Central Luzon in September 2009, dumped more than 300 millimeters of rain in 6 hours while Typhoon Carina (GAEMI) -enhanced Habagat generated 207 millimeters of rain over the course of 6 hours. Ondoy dumped a month’s worth of rain in Metro Manila in one day.

Climate change turbocharged the winds and rain of Typhoon Gaemi, which killed dozens of people across the Philippines, Taiwan and China earlier this year, a group of scientists said Thursday. Gaemi skirted the Philippines in July, triggering floods and landslides that killed at least 40 people, before making landfall in Taiwan and China. In China, the weather system caused torrential downpours that killed 50 people and prompted authorities to evacuate 300,000.

Terra Nova

MT Terra Nova sinks off Bataan; pollution released

The 65 meter long tanker Terra Nova capsized and sank six kilometers off Lamao Point, Bataan, Philippines. the philippines got hit by Typhoon Carina (or known by its international name, Typhoon Gaemi) yesterday and the effects of the nonstop rain put metro manila under a state of calamity as intense flooding hit the capital along with many other areas in luzon
