i'll say this: as a fat person, not only i love hayato but i'm so happy and surprised with his character?

i know the bar is in hell for us when it comes to rep that isn't joke characters but hayato maeda is genuinely one of the best fat characters in anime i've had the pleasure to watch. i've counted like two food jokes in 42 episodes and theyre not about him being fat but about them (judai, sho and hayato) as a friend group being hungry teens which you know what, fine! he's kind and he's resourceful and he's a softie who cares deeply about his friends. he has a genuine character arc about outgrowing his insecurities in dueling and realizing his true strengths lie somewhere else and that he doesn't need to be like everybody else in the osiris red doorms. i love hayato, so so much.

okay but ive seen ppl saying kaiser ryo's heel turn comes out of nowhere WHICH. not true. the whole underground dueling episode proves that. HOWEVER..... i felt it was kinda rushed. we're left to assume lots of stuff off screen. but then again its a card game anime so,,, yeah. cant blame them for wanting the card game duel to be the character turning point, ya know

yugioh gx season 1 thoughts under cut

first of all the fucking way i love everyone in the cast. holy shit.

but yeah i really loved this more than i expected. it's a very good starting season!!

my only problems are the initial pacing, some story choices and the fact that it didnt really decide on its stakes. i dont mind the final episode being the graduation duel (the last scene really sells the meaning of this show) but the seven stars [gestures] Thing could've been setup better.

like, camula was the first of the seven stars and HOLY SHIT did she raise the stakes with what she did. but then you get stuff like don zaloog which??? ough. i liked that episode but compared to earlier ones i didnt feel an inch of the same anxiety i did with the camula arc. you get judai being pensive and worried and that's great foreshadowing to later seasons but the drama just became a defloating baloon.

7/10 for me tho

OKAY but the abidos thing??? lowkey makes sense??? like we know atem's name was erased from history, so maybe abidos was close in the bloodline and historians confused atem for abidos and assumed he was "the king of games" historical documentation may have been talking about???

btw i hate the dorms thing. not the concept of having the dueling academy splitting the students into different ranks based on skill but the fact that it's fucking ooc for seto to have done that the way he did, ESPECIALLY since we're some years past dm. it feels more like a 4kids dub thing than anything.

THE JUDAI VS EDO DUEL WAS SOOOO WELL BALANCED!!! judai's victory felt EARNED. and edo was not holding any punches. i really hate it when antagonists/other characters that we know as an audience are powerful have to go against the protagonist and suddendly lose all their skill. tbh apart from the first judai vs cronos duel ive never seen gx fall into this trap which im so glad about!! judai is a great duelist and so is edo. like i can totally feel that after they'll become friends they might have rematches and there'll be an equal 50/50 chance of any of them winning
