Various Artists — The Suzanne Langille Songbook (Family Vineyard)

Suzanne Langille’s songbook is not a particularly thick one, but it’s undeniably heavy. Langille first loomed into earshot on Rooms, an album by her husband, guitarist Loren Connors (aka Loren MazzaCane and Loren Matei). Then and now, they’re a well-matched set. Inspired by the blues, folk songs, and poetry, Langille compresses meaning and atmosphere into as few words as possible. Connors does the same thing with notes, and both of them let complex and textured tones do a lot of the lifting. Even when their music reaches towards the epic, as it did in the rock band Haunted House, it’s never excessive. Whether Langille sings about love, loss, or the fantastic, she invests the moment with significance, wasting nary a second on the musical equivalent of small talk.

The Suzanne Langille Songbook was conceived and compiled by Connors in advance of a significant birthday. In essence, it’s a tribute album, filled with performances of music that originally appeared on her recordings with Connors or the five album’s she’s made without him. If you were a music fan during the 1990s and 2000s, you’re bound to have mixed feelings about tribute albums. While the possibility of hearing artists you like play songs by other artists that both you and they love, basement shelves and landfills are full of tribute CDs (a format especially suited to enabling excess) larded with performances that missed the mark. This one skirts that pitfall by giving generous space to musicians who have worked with Langille and/or Connors, or ones whose aesthetics overlaps with her own.

For the most part, the 32 musicians who contribute to this double CD’s 23 tracks get it. Some, like Jim O’Rourke and Sarah Davachi & Sean McCann, demonstrate this by making one of her songs very much their own, but equally compelling. Others, such as Heather Leigh and Alan Licht & Angela Jaeger, show this by delivering performances that reproduce Langille’s nothing-but-the-essence approach; Laura Ortman and Tom Carter / Ronnie Yates / Gabriel Martinez nail her vibe so faithfully that you might scan the credits for evidence that she was on their tracks. And Langille does appear on two tracks on which she, one an abstractly dramatic duet with Connors, the other an exploded diagram of a song realized by the tuned-in contributions of improvisers Daniel Carter and William Hooker. Dean Roberts, accompanied by Berlin-based musicians Boris Hauf and Andrea Belfi, captures Langille’s elusive, inward-looking quality almost too well; there’s a barely-there quality to his singing that feels like a foreshadowing of his sudden death in 2024. While there are a few tracks that’ll serve mainly to send you back to the originals, most of The Suzanne Langille Songbook does right by its subject. We should all be so fortunate as to receive such a loving birthday present!

Listen I love scars and I love scar worship and I love to be a gremlin about Hugo's flayed back, so the premise was an excuse to do just that 🥰🥰🥰

"Ain't full morning yet," Gabriel tells him, voice rough like he swallowed a holystone. Hugo goes right out again, if he even got properly awake to begin with. The blanket's slipped from over his shoulder, baring an expanse of scarred skin. It’s a foreign land in the rainy pre-dawn light. 

That’s what usually wards off this temptation in particular, on account of all the twisted-up, raw feelings it agitates. But being either still drunk or not drunk enough, Gabriel finds himself running his fingers over the rippled crescent of skin on Hugo's biceps. He's touched Hugo's flaying scars before, but usually it's in the heat of the moment, with bared teeth and crude taunting, greedy hands shoved under his shirt, when Gabriel can believe they're both shaking with lust and nothing else.

Like this, it's different. Here he can look his fill and draw conclusions, and generally think overmuch about it. Like how they must have started from the edges of his back and worked their way in, peeling him real neat to begin with but cutting deep and vicious by the time they got to his spine. 

No matter how much Gabriel, at a particular time and in a particular mood, would proclaim loud and long that it's the least of what his former captain deserved—it ain't how it should be done, gouging the bond out of a man like that. 

Gabriel knows butchery when he sees it. 

He follows an edge of the scarring with his fingertip, a pinched pale curve that used to be a sacred coil of tentacle unfurling over Hugo's shoulder, and feels a desolate ripple of magic in the inked lines of his own bondmark. A shout without an echo, a prayer lost to the wind. Yeah, thinking too much about it is bad, the way it makes him thirst for the holiest of vengeance. 

This, too, is some godsawful shit: the compulsion to hook his nails under its edges and tear the mass of scarring off his back, a second flaying driven by a brief but feverish conviction that he'll find smooth, tattooed skin beneath. It puts a sick ache in the pit of his stomach, how he swears he can still feel the currents of Hugo's mark under his touch, enough that he could perfectly trace out its old pathways—but there was a time he knew it almost better than his own, and memory can be all seven hells of a bitch like that.

Aziraphale and Crowley well aware they have to play demon/Angel and prompting each other but also taking the time to have a little chat and an catch up.

Oh, Muriel and Aziraphale working together all the way back at Job’s time! And poor Aziraphale, absolutely horrified at the bet, and the murder of the children.

Aziraphale is the only one to take Sitis’s feelings into account and consider she might not want to lose her children and give birth another seven times. And he’s the only Angel to understand that the dead children will be still be a devastating loss.

Gabriel is dressed as the shop assistant in Open All Hours proving not only does Aziraphale watch old British sitcoms, he thinks that’s the way actual life works.

All those years watching Mad Men and I never knew Jon Hamm could be funny and also sing.

Although - given Shax says ‘the kind of miracle only the mightiest of archangels could have performed’ I thought she meant Gabriel but after what Crowley said later about being able to access the records - is it him?

Ok the song when Aziraphale goes into Maggie’s shop this time is the glorious and heart rending ‘You don’t have to say you love me’ sung by Dusty Springfield. I thinks it’s best I just show you the lyrics

Anyway - the book ‘Jim’ waves in Saraqael’s face is a Pratchett - The Colour of Magic. Now they may have chosen this Pratchett as it’s the first Discworld BUT it may also have been a clue to look at the colour of the magical plume - purple.

The big book Jim uses to try to swat the fly is The Wicked Bible which has the commandment ‘Thou shalt commit adultery’ in it.

Crowley keeping an eye on the strange man sitting at Aziraphale’s table in the pub. I dunno, first he has a naked man in his place and now this bloke is chatting him up. Crowley definitely does that ‘he belongs to me, matey’ swagger when he walks up. (Mr Brown’s newspaper headline is Nebraskan Woman Taught Duck to Play Accordion. I don’t know why that is in the Metro, which is a London based newspaper about London)

The newspaper the man behind Mr Brown is holding has the headline ‘unearthed mysterious sealed library found’ Clue to S3?

Ok, Crowley has obviously been thinking about situations to make people fall instantly in love for a while, considering how quick off the mark he is for ideas to make Nina and Maggie fall in love. And Crowley now canonically has seen Four Weddings and a Funeral. And probably other Richard Curtis films. Crowley is canonically a rom-com fan!

I love how they both have different views of Jane Austen. She did all that and had an affair with Clara…

That whole ‘fall in love at a ball’ thing sounds more Heyer than Austen to be honest.

Jon Hamm is so good. Can we keep him? Have him star in British comedy shows forever?

And back to Job and this time Aziraphale isn’t playing a part. He is genuinely trying to stop Crowley and he’s shaking and afraid and doesn’t want to do this but he must.

Wait - when did we think the first time Crowley called Aziraphale Angel was? Cos he calls him Angel in this scene. And look - Aziraphale can see the goodness in Crowley even this early on. He knows Crowley doesn’t want to kill the children even as Crowley is trying so hard to convince him he’s bad.

And then Aziraphale says he knew the Angel Crowley was and Crowley says that’s not him now and so Crowley knew all along that Aziraphale knew him as an Angel!

‘I’m a demon. I lied!’ Except Crowley didn’t lie - as soon as Aziraphale showed faith in him he saved the children. And Crowley is clicking again…

Aziraphale’s not drinking reminds me of Maggie’s not drinking.

Crowley getting him to try the food means thousands of years later Aziraphale will want to save the Earth because of little restaurants where they know him….it’s a way of making sure Aziraphale loves the Earth as much as he does.

Crowley being on ‘his side’ sounds so lonely to Aziraphale - perhaps this is where he starts to join him.

Crowley and Aziraphale teaming up to trick the angels for the first time. And the for the first time Aziraphale lies to the angels - not obscure the issue, not cleverly manoeuvre around it, but straightforward lie.

‘Our car’ And while Crowley sleeps in the car (perhaps it’s where he feels safest after he saw the bookshop burn and he was trapped in his flat) he must spend a lot of time in the bookshop to be getting a lot of use out of it.

Looking at the books Gabriel is looking at. It includes The Crow Road, the book Muriel reads later. I’ve read most of them and they’re all very good books.

‘It was a nice day’. Thats Good Omens. Gabriel was about to read Good Omens. I know several of us have written fanfics where Good Omens the book exists in the Good Omens universe.

Poor Aziraphale. So certain he’s going to Fall. So certain he deserves it. And Crowley ‘I’m not taking you to Hell, Angel’. And that’s where it starts, isn’t it? Crowley’s absolute determination that Hell will not get his hands on Aziraphale and neither will Heaven starts here, as they sit side by side in companionship. Aziraphale is so scared and Crowley is kind in his way and that urge to protect him starts here, I think, just like Aziraphale’s determination that Crowley will not be alone started in the cellar when Crowley said he was on his side and Aziraphale thought tang was lonely.

I don’t think anyone has ever been kind to Aziraphale before. And I don’t think anyone has just kept Crowley company before. And now Crowley admits - he needs a friend. And he will protect that friend - his only friend - from both Heaven and Hell.

É HOJE!

Como hoje, 23 horas, lança o primeiro capítulo de Um Novo Caminho, decidi vir aqui e fazer meio que uma recapitulação de tudo o que tivemos na história de Inexplicável até agora

Há 5 anos atrás o primeiro capítulo de Inexplicável era publicado e o livro já nos era apresentado com a trágica e misteriosa morte de Samuel Martins, um garoto que era querido por todos, mas que escondia um segredo até mesmo de seus melhores amigos e foi esse mesmo segredo que o levou até a morte.

A morte do Samuel levou Noah a descobrir que sua família não era nada comum. No final temos a revelação de Davi, um anjo, que ataca Noah quando ele ainda estava em recuperação no hospital após Verdadeiro Deus ter tentado tomar seu corpo a força. Por pouco Noah consegue sobreviver, mas perde boa parte de seus poderes, deixando um trauma em seu corpo.

Inexplicável então é encerrado com o Epílogo "Anjos", no qual testemunhamos o "nascimento" do anjo Gabriel, o vilão principal de Um Novo Caminho.

Um ano depois desse epílogo é lançado Condenado: "Eu matei minha família." o conto que é a continuação de Inexplicável e que nos mostra Vinícius, um garotinho de 13 anos que é encontrado em sua casa após a sua família toda ter sido assassinada, ele confessa o crime e isso abre caminho para uma investigação do patamar da Amarelo, organização que Noah criou ao lado de seus amigos e sua família para dar um fim ao Verdadeiro Evangelho.

Um ano depois é lançado no livro Inexplicável lá no Wattpad o capítulo extra "Time", esse capítulo tem como foco a adolescência dos personagens adultos Inexplicável. Se passando logo após o fi da ditadura militar, nós vamos ler um pouco de como era a relação entre eles e como ficou tudo depois do trágico fim que conhecemos. Um trauma que foi deixado principalmente em Nayra e Brun.

(Esse capítulo extra até hoje mexe demais comigo, pra ser sincero com vocês)

Dia 19 de novembro, no mesmo ano em que Time é lançado, temos o lançamento também do Prólogo de Um Novo Caminho, no qual vamos matar a saudades e ler um breve flashback de Noah com Aline e Samuel.

E ainda hoje vamos ter o lançamento do primeiro capítulo do primeiro arco da primeira parte de Um Novo Caminho, então essa história chegou mais longe do que eu podia imaginar, eu realmente e apeguei demais a ela e só de imaginar que esse vai ser o encerramento já me dá um aperto no peito.

Inexplicável chegou a ganhar um concurso do Wattpad. Ele ficou em primeiro lugar na categoria de terror e eu até cheguei a dar uma entrevista para os avaliadores do concurso, vou deixar o link abaixo para quem se interessar a dar uma olhada e também dar uma força para eles!

E com isso eu encerro essa recapitulação. Eu espero de verdade que todos que lerem Um Novo Caminho gostem da história tanto como gostaram de Inexplicável. Esse primeiro arco vai servir muito para mostrar como a história amadureceu depois de todo esse tempo.

mas, me lembro de começar com eu descendo uma lomba pra chegar a um prédio pra treinar pro musical (nn o clg) e passei na frente do crew tbm. qnd cheguei lá vi o gabriel de longe mais acima do morro e fui dar oi pra ele, estranhamente ele estava com uma mulher que eu nn consigo lembrar se era a mãe dele ou uma mulher loira (meio gorda), de qualquer forma demos um abraço com beijinho na bochecha, porém, quando eu fui larguar, ele apertou mais, e deu outro beijo na bochecha, nn sei mto oq isso quer dizer, mas dps fomos pro "pŕedio" do cast e qnd chegamos lá falaram q o crew precisava de ajuda, ent fomos lá e corta

ent me lembro que por algum motivo eu fui na casa do marquesan, q era um prédio rosa, entrei e no quarto dele tinha até um playstation com um visor de realidade virtual, achei legal e só saí direto caminhando, peguei um carro e dirigi tp no fortnite até chegar num túnel em q um cara estava tentando atirar em mim, ent eu atirei de volta e matei ele (sem ressentimentos pq era fortnite ne pae) contudo o corpo dele nn saiu como um holograma, só estava alí parado, ent comecei a ficar maluquinha pq eu tinha matado ele, mas quando eu comecei a surtar, acordei
