WHO: @southsidefranco && @southsidegabe
WHEN: 13th April 2019
TRIGGERS: Drug use and mentions of drugs
NOTES: Franco finally gets caught in the act
WORD COUNT: 2561
Franco in Bold && Gabe in Italic
Franco had been using for a few weeks now. He'd been sleeping better but that was only because the drugs had made him sleep better. He'd been invited for a few drinks by a couple of the other Serpents and had realised, if he kept saying no, they might start to think something was off. It was half way through the night he excused himself, explaining he needed a smoke and heading for the door. He'd been pretty quiet all night, sure that it had something to do with the heroin he'd taken that morning. Once outside the bar, he looked around, checking no one had followed and headed down the side of the building, making his way round back where the bins were kept. He knelt down beside the large bin and reached into his pocket, with drawing his gear. He loaded the powder onto the spoon before heating it with his lighter and allowing it to liquefy and cool before drawing it up in the needle. He gotten pretty good at finding his veins without a tourniquet so, holding the needle in his mouth, he flexed his hands a few times, watching for the vein to appear and, once it did, he pushed the needle in, another puncture wound to join all the wounds littered over his body, waiting for the drug to spread through his body.
It’d been a typical night at the bar thus far. Nothing spectacular, nothing terrible, just another shift for Gabriel to get through before going home and plunking himself in front of Netflix. The Serpents were there, which meant a nice steady flow. Franco had shown up tonight, it was a pleasant enough surprise. He hadn’t seen much of him lately. Eventually Franco ducked out, not quite uncommon but as time passed at he didn’t come back, Gabriel began to worry. He quickly told his boss he’d be right back and slid out to look for the Serpent. He wasn’t out front so the next logical place was out back. He figured he’d check there before alerting anyone else. When he walked around back he sure as fuck found Franco, but the scene he saw before him was not expected. He barely took it the needle and supplies next to the man before his blood started boiling. “What the fuck do you think you’re doing, man?!”
Franco had been so focused on the task at hand, he hadn't heard anyone coming down the alleyway until he heard them shout at him. He sank back against the wall, his eyes already starting to roll in his head as he removed the needle from his arm and clutched it in his hands. He looked over at Gabe, his eyes not focusing on him, his head rested against the wall. After a hit, he'd found he had to stay still for at least ten minutes. When he'd first started using, he'd just slept but after a week or so, he'd found he could choose to sleep or to gorge out and watch telly. He took a deep breath and laughed, "What am I doing? I don't think that's your business" he said from his spot on the wall.
Gabriel couldn’t believe his ears. Here was his friend, standing behind his work, injecting himself with literally God knows what, and he was being told it was none of his business? That pissed him right off. He could see Franco was unstable on his feet as he walked closer. The dude looked more out of it than he’d ever really seen anyone. “Give me one good Goddamned reason why I don’t go grab a few of your fellow Serpents, right now,” he challenged.
Franco watched as Gabe came near him and he quickly pocketed the needle, he didn't need it taken off him right now, he'd only just seen Aaron for more gear. He remained against the wall, his head moving from watching Gabe to staring back up at the sky. He'd crossed his arms across his chest and held his elbow, rubbing it gently, the sting of the needle still there. "Cause there'd be no point. No one would believe you, I've had these scars since I was kidnapped and they all know I haven't been feeling great recently" he explained, a small smirk on his face
Gabriel rolled his eyes. That was weak, even for Franco. He was soon within an arms reach of the other and grabbed Franco's arm, looking at the fresh track marks. "Yeah, I'm sure they'll believe these are from weeks ago. Nice try, Bud."
Franco glared at Gabe, pulling his arm away from him like he’d been burnt, “So, what you going to do huh?” He asked, his voice low and angry, “Go running in there, tell them you saw me shooting up in the alley? They won’t care Gabe and I’m not afraid of them”. His eyes were dark as he stared at Gabe, leaning against the wall for support.
"Give me one fucking good reason why I shouldn't, Franco," Gabe retorted, angrily. "If they really wouldn't care, you wouldn't be hiding it like a coward. You know what you're doing is stupid as fuck, or at least you should." Gabriel could feel his blood boiling further but he tried to push it down. He hated that his friend was pulling this crap.
Franco smirked and scoffed, rolling his eyes as he flexed his neck and rested his head against the wall, “You’d think if they cared they would have noticed by now. I’ve been doing it for weeks and it feels so good Gabe” he said, his lips curled into a large smirk as the drugs started working through his system, “What I’m doing may be stupid but picking a fight with me will just be worse for you”.
Gabriel couldn't help the laugh that escaped. "You think," he breathed out, "picking a fight with me somehow ends with you winning?" He had to reconfirm because frankly he couldn't believe his ears. "I'd think about your answer really well dude, before you answer, because as I recall you're pretty popular for picking fights you can't win." Gabriel didn't want to have to lay the guy out, but he would if he had to.
Franco nodded, “I think picking a fight with me isn’t a good idea” he confirmed, “I get you do that crazy martial arts crap but that means you have some sort of moral compass”. He kind of knew, in some fields, you weren’t allowed to abuse what you knew cause of Benji so he was winging it and hoping for the best, the last thing he needed right now was a smack to the face, he wasn’t feeling very steady, “But I mean, if you wanna go in and get back up, feel free”. That was the problem with drugs, they made him brave. Made him forget the scared man that he really was.
Gabriel pinched the bridge of his nose. This wasn't his friend and he was getting quite irritated. He was pulling patience from places he didn't even know existed. "Look dude," he replied, still angry but more level. "You need to stop this shit, like right now, and I don't think you can. So yeah, I'm going to tell your Serpent pals but you're coming with me, whether you like it or not, because I don't trust you back here by yourself."
Franco shook his head, “I ain’t going anywhere unless it’s home” he spoke, turning his head away from Gabe and looking down the alley. He pushed himself from the wall and took a shaky step forward, why hadn’t he just waited until he was home to do this? He steadied himself, “I ain’t going back in that bar and I ain’t gunna stop”.
Gabriel reached out and took a firm grip on Franco's upper arm. "You really want to try me here, Franco?" He tested. He was not letting Franco leave here, especially not alone.
Franco twisted himself around, bringing himself face to face with Gabe and staring down at his grip, kind of glad for it as the spin had made him stumble, “Try what Gabe” he hissed, “You really think you’re gunna stop me leaving here”.
"You're gonna come in one way or another, dude," Gabriel replied, tired of this already. He pushed Franco back against the wall, probably a little more aggressively than needed, but he didn't care. "I can and will stop you from leaving here along, dude."
Franco stumbled back against the wall, his back hitting it hard, "What you going to do huh? Take me in there, tell them I'm doing heroin and let them kick the crap outta me? Serpents are family". He gulped, "Get off me Gabe, before I make you".
Gabriel took a second to answer. "You think I want them to beat the shit out of you, Franco?" He asked, bewildered. "Jesus Christ. No. I want you to stop and I think they should know about because they are your family." He ran his free hand through his hair, still holding his grip on Franco. "Also, you really can't make me do anything, especially not like this."
Franco laughed, "Some of them won't take to kindly to what I've been doing and they won't accept just telling me to stop". He sighed and nodded, "Have it your way" and he balled his fist, aiming it for the only accessible part of Gabe, his stomach.
Gabriel rolled his eyes the minute he saw Franco readying himself to throw a punch. He quickly grabbed Franco's hand with his free hand and sighed. "You're not going to win here," he quipped. "Don't bother trying."
Franco tried to pull his fist from Gabe's grip but the boy was too strong and the drugs were already working through his system, "Please" he said, "Please for the love of god, just let me walk away".
Gabriel released Franco. "Franco, no. You can't just walk away. I can't let you because if you keep at this you're gonna end up dead somewhere." Gabriel was seriously concerned about his friend and he was going to at least let one Serpent know before the night was up.
Franco steadied himself and sighed, "I don't want or need help Gabe. I'm numbing all the shit I've been through and weed and alcohol wasn't enough. Please, i've been doing this for weeks, just let it be".
Gabriel shook his head. "That's not convincing me in the slightest that I shouldn't be concerned here." He sighed again, trying to sound like he was going easier on the other. "Come inside with me, or I'm going and grabbing Charlie."
Franco's eyes widened when Gabe said Charlie's name. If Charlie found out, Darius woild too and this was not the news he needed his boss and leader to hear. He shook his head, "You can't tell Charlie" he breathed, stepping forward and gripping Gabe's shirt, loosely and more from fear then anything else, "Please you can't, she'll tell Dare".
Gabriel nodded. "I know, that's the point, really," he answered, pushing Franco's hand off his shirt. "You're walking back in there and telling someone of your choice, or, I get her."
Franco let his hands drop to his side and gulped, "I don't want to go back in there. I need to go home and sleep" he admitted, "Just, tell Charlie then, I don't even care" he lied but he knew he needed to go home, he couldn't face his family now.
“You can go talk to her, or anyone of your choosing really,” Gabe suggested as nicely as possible. “And then you can go sleep.”
Franco shook his head, "I ain't saying shit, I'm happy with only you knowing" and he shrugged his shoulders, "I gotta get out of here bro" and he turned heel to walk away
“You leave right now and I’m telling all of ‘em,” Gabe challenged, hoping that would be enough for Franco to turn around on his own.
Franco stopped in his tracks and sighed, "They'll all find out any way" he said, swallowing hard, "I'll be kicked out my family so go ahead, I'm not going to stop you".
Gabriel sighed and walked to close the gap between he and the other. “Franco. Look. You can’t deal with this alone, and I don’t think you’ll be kicked out. You just need to talk to someone before this gets even more out of hand.”
Franco turned around and shook his head, "I've been dealing with it just fine Gabe. Unless you had have caught me, you wouldn't even know what I was doing". He walked back over to the wall, needing to steady himself, his body tired as the drugs were taking effect, "Come on, do what you have too. I have to go home before I fall down sleeping here"
“Just come in with me, dude,” Gabriel urged. “Because for one, I don’t think you can get home alone right now.” He paused for a moment. “And if shit goes south, I’ll give you a ride wherever you need after my shift.”
Franco bit down on his lip, his heart was racing, his blood was pumping fast. Millions of things were rushing through his head. Dare finding out, Charlie finding out, Benji finding out... All the people the truth would hurt. He lent heavily against the wall, "Just, tell Charlie she knows where to find me OK? I got a lot of people who are going to need to hear it from me"
Gabriel raised a brow. “Do you mean here? Or are you still trying to convince me that I should let you go home alone in your state?”
Franco shook his head, "Look, I'll level with you. I have to go and find someone before any of this shit gets out. I don't need him hearing through the grapevine".
Gabriel sighed. “I still don’t want you leaving here alone. How many times do I have to say that for it to get through your thick skull?”
Franco sighed, "Gabe, I promise you, I'll be OK, but I have to tell Benji now, before any of you do. Please".
Gabriel ran a hand through his hair. "Look, let me call you an Uber or whatever, so at least I know you'll get home." Gabriel wasn't normally one to give in but he knew he had to get back inside sooner rather than later.
Franco nodded, "Fine, call the god damn Uber" he knew he needed to go home and this was the only way Gabe was going to let him.
Gabriel pulled out his phone and ordered an Uber to the bar. "Text me when you get home, dude. Don't think I won't be coming around to check up on you."
Franco took a deep breath, "I'll text you OK. I just can't do this. No point trying to deny I'm out of my head". He started to walk again heading to the front of the club
Gabriel nodded and reluctantly let him go. He kicked a can out of his way as he headed back into the bar, already figuring out exactly what he was going to say when he texted Charlie about this, and ASAP. There was no way he was letting this simmer any longer.

Young & Adrienne
Adrienne was what Young needed after he messed up with Adonis. He considers her a close friend Hans & Ace Hans is aware of the restraints that the department has done and is actually very impressed with Ace’s enthusiasm despite being faced with a lot of hardship due to the city’s attitude to crime. Luci & Gabe Luci KNOWS that Gabe frames him a lot of the time. He’s not stupid. He, however, does use that as cards to get Gabe to help him out when he needs him. Gabe is also his favourite brother but don’t tell them that.
Jez & Daria Jezebel loves nights out with this woman. They usually have weekend long benders Jez & ZacH Words have been spoken about the swimming pool, does she care? Nope. Jinx & Melina Jinx doesn’t have many friends but the one they do have they treasure and Melina is now to them Jinx & Liana Loves feeding her info on things they have seen. They have also dragged her back to their place and had some very fun sessions
Shin & Nadia Shin would drop everything for Nadia, they gave him a second chance in life and freedom he only dreamed of before.
Shin & Melina
Shin would like for her to know that he would never harm Aera. However, holds no grudges when she brings up her dating other witches. Zi & Kang Zi has stared at that photo for hours in her life imagining her elder brothers life. She always pictured him as some caring older brother. Zi & Adrienne Zi always defers to Adrienne for fashion advice. As she is never up to date.

What are you doing to improve or maintain your health currently? Well my scoliosis is getting worse by the day, so I keep myself from slouching and being in any position that strains the part of my spine that bends. Gabie also lent me an anti-slouching thing that I have to wear and tighten around my shoulders and back. It has nothing to do with scolio, but it helps tons. ^To add to that, what are some other things you could be doing? The doctor I went to before suggested swimming laps, but I’ve never done that ever since I had the checkup. I also want to get a second X-ray checked since I’m positive my spine has gotten worse since May 2016. How much do you currently weigh? It’s usually in the 87-95 lbs range. How much do you want to weigh? I’m okay with that, even if it’s underweight.
Do you ever look at someone's social media posts and feel a little jealous? Yeah, a little. But it’s envious, not jealous.
^If so, why is that? They have all these luxuries and get to go to all these places and I’m stuck at home with a mom that routinely yells at me. Idk but for me those social media posts are a bit of a trigger so I mute those people for a bit until they’re done. What book(s) are you currently reading? None. What chores did you do today? It’s pretty early in the day and I haven’t even gotten out of bed yet. What chores do you need to do? The only thing I’m in charge of is wash my own dishes so I’ll be doing that once or twice today. What are you wearing currently? A blouse and some shorts. Do you like how your hair looks today? It’s just bed hair. It’s alright. Are you on a diet? Nope. List 10 of the prettiest people you know or have met. Gabie, Michelle, Gabe, Ate Nica, Ate Jane, Audrey, Gabie, Gabie, Gabie, and Gabie? List 10 favorite girl's names. Isabela, Renée, Olivia, Arden, Audrey, Mia, Ava, Charlotte, Noelle, Harper. We’re going out of bounds here but Paulette, Lily, and Julianna are all lovely too. List 10 favorite boy's names. Joaquin, Franco, Miguel, Luis, Gabriel, Pio, Santi, Javier, Lorenzo, Matteo. Do you think you are attractive? I think I’m okay, but I’m not gonna go ahead and call myself attractive... Do you have anyone you can trust? Of course. What are some things you plan to do tomorrow? I said yes to a Christmas party tomorrow so I’ll be there, but before that I’ll stop by the mall to pick up Gabie’s gift. She’s been wanting Life Is Strange, so I coordinated with her dad in secret–he’ll be getting her a new PS4, and I’ll take care of her first video game on it. :) Are you behind on things? Usually on gossip, yeah. Do you take time to rest? More than anything. HAHAHA What health problem are you struggling with currently? Mental health and scoliosis.
What does your heart long for? Right now it just wants a long-ass Christmas break just hibernating in my room. No plans, no outings, no interruptions. What are you learning? I’ve recently learned that I increasingly hate the holiday season with every year that passes. Do you take life day by day? Only when I’m at my worst and have to keep a daily progress/track of myself. Otherwise, I’m too impatient for taking things day by day. Have you been struggling with bitterness lately? Not at all, there’s nothing to be bitter about. Do you have a lot of questions? As a journalism major? You bet. Is it snowing where you live? No and it never has. Do you watch the snow fall? I totally would if it snowed here. List 10 fashion trends you like. Too much work. List 10 fashion trends you dislike. See above. I don’t even actually remember enough trends to make a list of 20, so. Are you ready for Jesus to come back? I’m not Christian and I really don’t like celebrating Christmas. Do you believe that Jesus lived and is returning? I believe in neither. What's your current favorite Bible verse? None of them. When was the last time you went to church? Two weeks ago. I got to skip last week’s since I was being initiated for my org and I had never felt so free. Are you spiritual? No. Have you ever experienced anything supernatural? Like one small instance in my aunt’s house once, but as I said in my previous surveys I like to think it was just my grandfather fooling around with the door. Do you believe in spiritual gifts? No. Do you believe in callings? No. If so, do you know what your call is? Nothing religious, definitely. What superpower do you wish you had? Time travel is all I desire in this brief lifetime. What superpowers, if any, DO you have? I can whip up a 5-6 page essay assignment in 30 minutes to an hour depending on how much I know about it. I can also procrastinate every single pending thing on the last evening and turn it from chicken shit to chicken salad, but college has since taught me it’s SOOOOOO much better to do everything earlier, so that’s a superpower I haven’t been using much. Do you have too much clutter in your home? No, my mom hates clutter more than anything. Have you ever tried weed? No. Have you ever considered smoking pot and then decided not to? Never considered it even once. It just never seemed appealing to me so I never bothered with it, simple as that. Have you ever smoked a cigarette? Never. Now that I strongly dislike, since I have my own experiences from it. If you were rich, would you get a professional photoshoot done? Absolutely. I can be extra sometimes too. Do you own slipper socks? Nope. What's your favorite Christmas carol to hear playing when you're shopping? Anything by Michael Bublé, really. Do you stalk anyone on Facebook? I don’t. Stalking just feels weird to me, especially if it’s a stranger or a relative of someone I know. Have you ever completed a 30 day photo challenge? No but I used to do the themed 30-day challenges when they used to be a thing on Tumblr like seven years ago. Have you ever taken a photo every day for a year? No. I should probably do that. ^If not, would you ever want to try that? Totally. Have you ever thought about what your new year's resolution will be yet? I don’t do resolutions. I can always start on a new habit tomorrow if I wanted to. Do you get enough exercise? I get zero exercise. Are jeggings your favorite pants? Never had a pair but they sound kind of uncomfortable to me, being that I hate leggings. Do you have way too many photos stored on your computer? No. I actually make it a point to not put photos or videos or anything on my laptop since I don’t want it to become to full and then slow down and have it die. I only have school stuff on my Mac so like PDF files, Word files, e-books and all that boringness. Do you take a lot of selfies? I took an average of 0 selfies this 2017, that should tell you something. What is something that's a mystery to you? The rest of the universe. Do you have any painful memories? My entire life has been just an accummulation of painful memories. Do you pray? No.
In what social class are you? I guess I’m in the middle. In what social class to you wish to be? Indifference. Do you ever imagine that you are English royalty? HAHAHAHA yeah on a sucky day I like to think I’m secretly one then they’d whisk me away from everything and I never had to worry about a thing again. Do you have any English ancestry in you? Zero English blood. What is the origin of your last name? It’s Spanish and Portuguese. What is the meaning of your first name? It means bright and shining.
^Whatever it is, do you feel that it fits you? Other people can answer that for me. Do you ever multi-task? Yes. Are you multi-tasking right now Nope.

Your Tuesday Morning Roundup
He’s a rookie alright. And the debate can finally stop.
Last night at the NBA Awards, point guard Ben Simmons was named Rookie of the Year over the petty Donovan Mitchell, who came to LA in this:
Look what this man rolled up in

— Utah Jazz (@utahjazz) June 25, 2018
Yep. The guy that said he didn’t care about winning the award was still doing this crap.
And voting wasn’t even close. Simmons earned 90 first place votes and 481 total points. Mitchell grabbed 11 first place votes and 323 total points.
Ben’s speech was short and simple, thanking his family, teammates, coach Brett Brown, and the city of Philadelphia.
As for the responses for Donovan Mitchell, they were gorgeous:

Also, Amir Johnson won the NBA Hustle Award, which is an actual thing, and Joel Embiid, who finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting, was named the cover man for EA Sports’ NBA Live 19.

To cap things off, Bill Russell is still the king:

The Roundup:
It was the first of three games between the Phillies and Yankees at Citizens Bank Park, but it didn’t feel or sound like it with the influx of dumb New Yorkers (Kinkead: or locals wearing Yankee hats).
The Yankees dominated early on and held on for a 4-2 win last night. Aaron Judge hit a solo shot to left field in the fifth.
Scott Kingery had an RBI single in the seventh and Maikel Franco hit a solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. But prior to all that, pitcher Jonathan Loaisiga had a no-hitter up until the bottom of the sixth when Jorge Alfaro led off the inning with a single. He finished giving up just that hit in 5 1/3 with eight strikeouts and two walks.
Vince Velasquez gave up two runs on three hits and four walks but struck out seven.
To make matters worse, Rhys Hoskins had a tense confrontation with a fan after a strikeout in the sixth:
Rhys Hoskins says he got frustrated, shouldnt have come out and said something back to the fan
Looked like he said “You want to Go hit?” and “Go home”
Rhys is a standup guy

— John Clark (@JClarkNBCS) June 26, 2018
He later apologized for his outburst after the game:
“Someone said something in the stands that triggered me. I was pretty frustrated by the at-bat. Got caught up in the moment. Shouldn’t happen. Can’t happen. But it did.”
The Phils looks to put last night past them tonight as Jake Arrieta takes the mound at 7:05 PM on NBC Sports Philadelphia.
Meanwhile, Edubray Ramos was placed on the disabled list, with Hector Neris being brought back up to the big club. Gabe Kapler will hope somebody can step up in the bullpen.
And check out an all new episode of Crossed Up.
With NHL free agency opening up on Sunday, the Flyers began to keep some of their own players. They extended qualifying offers to seven of their eight restricted free agents:
Tyrell Goulbourne (LW)
Robert Hagg (D)
Taylor Leier (LW)
Alex Lyon (G)
Danick Martel (C)
Anthony Stolarz (G)
Reece Willcox (D)
The only one that didn’t get a qualifying offer was goalie Petr Mrazek, officially making him an unrestricted free agent.
That wasn’t the only piece of news involving the team. Washington Post reporter David Fahrenthold asked the Ed Snider Youth Hockey Foundation if they would still hold the annual Flyers Celebrity Golf Invitational at the Trump National Golf Club in Pine Hill.
The Phila. @flyers, after deliberation, are returning to @realDonaldTrump’s Philly golf course for their team golf tourney. Their statement: pic.twitter.com/n7VWP0nqEl
— David Fahrenthold (@Fahrenthold) June 25, 2018
His tweet originally said the Flyers made the statement before the team called him to make the correction. The team also told him they’d still have players attend the tournament, but move the event to a different golf club next year.
Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz was named the third best player in the NFL Top 100 last night. Tom Brady, a guy who can’t catch, was #1 for the second straight year.
Doug Pederson got praise from his predecessor, Chip Kelly:
“I don’t think it’s revolutionary,” Kelly said. “I think things trickle-up and trickle-down. And I think when you have good coaches, they don’t try to put a box of what they do. They say, ‘How do we adapt to what we have?’ And I thought what Doug (Pederson) did last year at Philly was as phenomenal a coaching job as I’ve seen in that way. He adapted from Carson (Wentz) to Nick (Foles). What a great coach does is he puts guys in position to make plays, and that’s what he did with those guys.”
La Salle’s B.J. Johnson will join the Charlotte Hornets for summer league action.
In other sports news, the third matchday of the FIFA World Cup saw Uruguay beat Russia to win Group A (Saudi Arabia beat Egypt as well), while Spain tied Morocco and Portugal tied Iran in Group B, with Spain winning the group. Uruguay will play Portugal in the knockout rounds, while Spain will take on Russia this weekend.
Today, Group C and D wrap up. Australia-Peru and Denmark-France begin at 10 AM, while Nigeria-Argentina and Iceland-Croatia play at 2 PM.
James Harden won MVP at last night’s NBA Awards.
The Denver Nuggets declined Nikola Jokic’s option in order to work out a max deal.
In the news, the search for a pilot who landed a plane on a Cape May beach continues.
Toys ‘R’ Us is officially closing on Friday.

Maikel Franco’s Walk-Off Blast Saves Phillies From Potentially Devastating Sweep
Maikel Franco is a human rollercoaster, and he’s headed back up.
Franco saved the Phillies from what would have been a brutal three-game sweep by the Washington Nationals when he stepped to the plate in the bottom of the ninth and delivered this shot:
Maikel Franco. Boom.
This NL postseason chase is going to be nuts.
(MLB x @Supercuts) pic.twitter.com/J73vaUVXcn
— MLB (@MLB) July 14, 2019
The blast was an exclamation point on a series in which Franco finished 6 for 10 with two homers.
Despite a scorching start to the season, Franco bottomed out with a .204 batting average back on June 23. He has since used a red-hot stretch in which he entered today hitting .393 with a 1.164 OPS over his last 15 games to revive his season. Franco’s walk-off homer came the day after he committed a critical late-inning error that cost the Phillies an important run in an eventual 4-3 loss on Saturday night.
After the game, Phillies manager Gabe Kapler credited Franco’s resiliency, while also channeling his inner Rocky Balboa.
“Oftentimes, I think it’s not whether you’re going to get punched, you’re going to fall down, you’re going to hit the mat, but it’s how quickly you can get back up and how hard you hit back,” he said. “And, you know, Maikey had an error that hurt us yesterday, but he bounced back today and had a walk-off homer, really showed the resiliency that we talk about, the toughness we talk about, that makes up our club and the character.”
Is that Maikey, Maiky, Mikey? I’ll go with Maikey.
Anyway, it appeared he was on the verge of permanently losing his everyday role about a month ago, but plans have since changed.
“When he’s swinging the bat well, when he’s the best version of Maikey, he can’t come out of the lineup, and you never take him out of the lineup because he’s just that good,” Kapler said. “He makes us that much better and deeper, and, obviously, a guy who’s a big threat to hit a walk-off home run like he did at the very bottom of the lineup. And that makes our lineup deep and dangerous, so when he’s the best version of himself, we legitimately cannot take him out of the lineup—he’s that important to us.”
Arrieta Impressive Despite Injury
I wasn’t very impressed with Jake Arrieta’s tough guy act after his poor outing against the Mets last weekend, but I was impressed with his tough guy act today. Arrieta, who is pitching with bone spurs in his right elbow, held the Nationals to only one run over five innings, setting the tone in a game that his team absolutely had to have. After the game, Kapler credited Arrieta’s ability to fight – not fistfight – through the pain.
“I think there was a lot that was said leading up to today about Jake and his ability to take down this start, and what did 85 percent of Jake look like for us,” Kapler said. “That’s it, right? It’s a guy who can fight through some discomfort, a guy who can fight through not being at his best but can still give us a chance to win. Really impressive, gutsy, also resilient effort by Jake.”
It wasn’t a dominant performance, but it was pretty damn good.
Despite generating only three swings and misses on his 88 pitches, Arrieta relied on a light mix of curveballs, changeups and an effective sinker – which he threw 55 times – to generate nine groundball outs. His velocity stayed fairly consistent until the fifth inning as he averaged 92.4 mph on his sinker. Here’s the breakdown by inning:
1st inning: 93.2 mph 2nd inning: 93.3 mph 3rd inning: 91.3 mph 4th inning : 92.9 mph 5th inning: 91.0 mph
Noticeably absent again from Arrieta’s arsenal was his cutter. He told reporters after the game that he’s gotten away from throwing the pitch because it causes discomfort, and he’s unable to consistently get the movement he wants.
It’s fair to debate the merit of removing an effective starter after only 88 pitches, particularly with a bullpen that entered the day with a 6.07 ERA since June 1. After the game, I asked Kapler if he would’ve stuck with Arrieta had the Phillies not threatened offensively in the bottom of the fifth inning.
“No, that was enough for him. He was reaching that 90-pitch mark through five innings,” he said. “That’s a lot of work for anybody, particularly for a guy who’s not fully healthy.”
In addition to limiting his banged up starter’s workload, the splits also suggest it was the right move. Arrieta came into today with a 6.82 ERA this season when going through an opponent’s batting order for the third time. Opponents were hitting .311 with a .948 OPS. Pair that with his fifth inning drop in velo, and I’ve got no gripe with Kapler’s decision to remove Arrieta at that point.
Pinch-Hitting Woes Continue
With the game tied, 1-1, and runners at first and second with nobody out in the bottom of the fifth, Kapler elected to pinch-hit for Arrieta with Brad Miller. Given the Phillies’ limited bench options, I was a bit surprised that Kapler didn’t have Arrieta just bunt the runners over that early in the game to save himself a bench bat. Actually, I’m not surprised – but I would have done it. Miller instead struck out, continuing the Phillies’ pronounced pinch-hitting woes this season. Phils pinch-hitters are now 24 for 145 (.166), which represents the National League’s lowest pinch-hitting batting average.
The Phillies signed Logan Morrison on Saturday to a minor league contract. It’s hard to imagine that Morrison, who had 15 homers and a .999 OPS in 152 ABs at Triple-A with the Yankees organization, won’t soon join the big club. I mean, why not? The bench production can’t get much worse.
Harper’s Power Outage
It might be hittin’ season, but the month of July hasn’t brought a surge in Bryce Harper’s power numbers. In 35 at-bats this month, Harper has only one homer and two total extra-base hits. The Phillies desperately could use an uptick in Harper’s .371 July slugging-percentage over the second half of this month.

Your Friday Morning Roundup
What. A. Walk-off.
Down 2-1 in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Williams brought home Scott Kingery on a groundout to tie things up. The Phillies were 0-38 before last night in games they trailed after eight frames.
Then Maikel Franco changed that record in a 5-2 win over the Marlins:

As for the rest of the game, Nick Pivetta had a good start outside of giving a two-run shot to Justin Bour in the fourth. He gave up two runs on a total of four hits and seven strikeouts in six innings of work. Rhys Hoskins got the Phils on the board with a solo bomb for his 22nd of the year.
They’ll take on the Marlins three more times at the ballpark for alumni weekend. Vince Velasquez will pitch tonight.
As for manager Gabe Kapler, he had a lot of interesting nuggets in his weekly appearance with Angelo Cataldi. The two discussed Kapler’s positivity, Odubel Herrera’s base running mistake, and whether or not he wanted a fan ejected at Fenway Park.
As for new Phillie Wilson Ramos, he expects to me back from injury by the middle of this month.
The Roundup:
Need a new shirt? The CB Store has 52% off some of the most popular shirts and it lasts until Sunday.
Over at Eagles training camp, the Birds had their most intense session yet. They were in pads again and did more live tackling, especially in red zone situations. Having boots on the ground, it felt fun.
With Tim Jernigan out, look for Destiny Vaeao to maybe be the starting defensive tackle alongside Fletcher Cox for Week 1 of the regular season.
He has spent the last two years developing how he uses his hands as a defensive tackle, which is why the wrist injury made last season difficult. Playing with a cast disrupts how a defensive tackle can engage with offensive linemen, and when it happens during the season, there’s little time for a player to adjust.
Vaeao has taken advantage of the increased workload during the last week, and the coaches will be watching him closely during the preseason to determine how much he can help come Sept. 6.
Vaeao doesn’t want to act as if he’s arrived, but he’s not acting surprised that the coaching staff has put him next to Cox this offseason.
“Everyone is aiming to be a starter in this league,” Vaeao said. “I’ve been ready. Every year, you have to be ready. Because if you’re not ready, they’re going to kick you out.”
Malcolm Jenkins wanted to be like Hall of Famer Brian Dawkins. Despite not having a “Weapon X” alter ego, he’s done pretty well.
BGN Radio has rebranded as the Go Birds pod, and they won’t bring over Brandon Lee Gowton.
The Sixers will have a groundbreaking ceremony next Wednesday for the new facility that will house the Delaware Blue Coats.
In other sports news, the Ravens edged the Bears 17-16 in the Hall of Fame game. Football is back.
Glen Jacobs, also known as the WWE wrestler Kane, is the next mayor of Knox County, Tennessee.
Could one feature in the new DraftKings Sportbook app change betting?
EA Sports took out a reference to Colin Kaepernick in a song featured in the new Madden game. They’ll put it back in before it’s released to the public.
In the news, two boys put a black baby doll around a noose as a prank in Queen Village.
Despite his administration saying Russia is meddling in the midterms, President Trump called it a hoax.
